Victorian music hall star Dan Leno, creator of Widow Twankey and Mother Goose, was born on 20th December, 1860. A child prodigy of the stage, Leno kicked off his career as "Little George, the Infant Wonder," winning the World Clog Dancing Championship in Leeds. Having become an esteemed character comedian, Leno was poached to play Dame Durden in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk' at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane - a success so immense that he played the role for 15 consecutive years, effectively kickstarting the tradition of the pantomime Dame. Oh Yes He Did! In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the comedic chaos of Christmas shows provided an outlet for upper class audiences to revel in the bawdy antics of working class comics; reveal Leno's later struggles with alcoholism and desire for recognition as a serious actor; and consider whether he really is still treading the boards of London's West End - as a ghost… #Christmas #Theatre #Victorian #Person Further Reading: ‘Dan Leno: the original Pantomime Dame' (British Library, 2016): https://blogs.bl.uk/english-and-drama/2016/10/dan-leno-the-original-pantomime-dame.html ‘Oh, yes she is: panto dames through the decades' (The Guardian, 2020): https://www.theguardian.com/stage/gallery/2020/dec/19/oh-yes-she-is-panto-dames-through-the-decades-in-pictures ‘Dan Leno - the pantomime dame' (Promenade Promotions, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvKymdNEfx8 Love the show? Hey we're not in the land of sorrow anymore with Hercules Episode 67 - ...And Fancy Free Hercules goes dancing and meets up with the Widow Twankey. I mean that's what happens, there is a girl who wants to win a dance competition. And it is amazing. Meanwhile the panel tries to get Brian to play female pop songs instead of coming up with real topics for the Jeopardy board. Said panel is also way out of practice with said board. "It's not exactly dull travelling with the Doctor." Not normally, Tegan. Not normally... But this is the season 19 closer, Time-Flight, in which the Doctor seems to be under heavy sedation, OmNyssia knows all the answers, Tegan remains an air hostess (not that she ever hints at this) and Adric is still dead (mercifully). The Master is at large too, coercing a plane-full of extras into caressing an inner sanctum, wherein lies a battery crammed full of blokes and an orang-utan's family jewels. He also finds time to co-ordinate a platoon of turd men, all while nursing a projectile cold. But which passenger is Victor Foxtrot? Why is Concorde's progress monitored from a broom cupboard? And why on (prehistoric) Earth is the Master cosplaying as the last Widow Twankey in the job centre, even when he's on his Jack Jones? Listen in to hear Jim, Martin and special guest Ian Atkins pick through the wreckage.
