In this episode, which is the 15th in Danny Hurst´s whirlwind history tour of the places on the London Monopoly board he takes a look at Strand; the street where the gunpowder plot was hatched and the home to several spectacular palaces. He reveals the origins of Savoy operas, why you have to exit and enter the hotel by driving on the right and why the Roman baths are not what you think they are. You´ll also learn about the first house in London to get a number and the street´s connection to one of the world´s biggest cigarette brands. KEY TAKEAWAYS The origin of the name is related to an old term for a riverbank. Somerset House, which is located on the Strand, has been used in many different ways, which Danny talks us through. The famous bath house off the street is not as old as we have been led to believe. Chunni the Asian elephant, who used to perform at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, once lived on the street. To approach the entrance of The Savoy you have to drive on the right. The live version of “No Woman No Cry” was recorded at The Lyceum. The Strand is the location of several London firsts. BEST MOMENTS ‘It just sounds stupid not to say the Strand. ´ ‘Visitors have to see it through a window as it can only be viewed by appointment.' ‘Big Benzene is the largest clock face in the UK.' In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the comedic chaos of Christmas shows provided an outlet for upper class audiences to revel in the bawdy antics of working class comics; reveal Leno's later struggles with alcoholism and desire for recognition as a serious actor; and consider whether he really is still treading the boards of London's West End - as a ghost… #Christmas #Theatre #Victorian #Person Further Reading: ‘Dan Leno: the original Pantomime Dame' (British Library, 2016): https://blogs.bl.uk/english-and-drama/2016/10/dan-leno-the-original-pantomime-dame.html ‘Oh, yes she is: panto dames through the decades' (The Guardian, 2020): https://www.theguardian.com/stage/gallery/2020/dec/19/oh-yes-she-is-panto-dames-through-the-decades-in-pictures ‘Dan Leno - the pantomime dame' (Promenade Promotions, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvKymdNEfx8 Love the show? The paranormal comedy podcast where we probe possibly the Most Haunted area of London's West End (see what we did there). Theatre Royal aka Drury Lane Theatre aka Drury Lane is home to multiple spirits including 1700's natural-style actor Charles Macklin who murdered/manslaughtered fellow actor Thomas Hallam following an argument about a wig. Is Charles being punished via being forced to relive his crime? But it's not just Charles. Joseph Grimaldi was an actor, dancer and comedian who became possibly the most famous clown. Joey too would end up at Drury Lane. So too would Victorian era comedian Dan Leno (who had an interesting method to cover the smell of his butt produce) and 1800's actor Charles Kean. But none would be as disturbing as the secret of Drury Lane, the Man in Grey. On the note of ghosts, has it ever occurred to you that a ghost could achieve a lot more in afterlife if they had their head severed? It turns out that we aren't the first folks to give this theatre a thorough probing because the United Kingdom's Most Wanted got there first. But was there a hidden room with a hidden secret that could solve the mystery paranormal energy at this theatre? All that and more on this week's file. Rob and Matt talk with legendary singer / songwriter MELANIE! We talk to Melanie about her experience at the original woodstock as one of only 3 solo performers. Melanie goes into great detail about her experience; Starting with the moment she first heard of woodstock, flying for the first time in a helicopter and taking the stage in front of a massive audience (unlike anything she ever experienced). We also talk about: Her #1 song (in 1970) BRAND NEW KEY and how she came up with the idea for the song (you won't believe what it was). Performing with Miley Cyrus (Backyard Sessions) Melanie's new album MAGIC BUS. This is a radio interview and music from 1972. We loved talking to Melanie and reliving many memories with her and you'll love this interview. *********** A little bit about Melanie: Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960's. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris' world-famous L'Olympia Theater at the personal invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other theaters, halls and beloved music clubs around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits and many have been re-recorded. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done to My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith's frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she continues to perform today. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. At 17 she won Talentville USA, a nationwide talent contest sponsored by Coca Cola - the equivalent today to America's/Britain's Got Talent - culminating in finals in New York, but she chose instead to go to Indiana University to study for a degree in music before joining the Metropolitan Opera National Company and subsequently touring all over the United States and Canada. However, her love for Musical Theatre totally overwhelmed that of her love for opera…and a very happy career in musicals has followed. She arrived in London in 1971 to star as Magnolia in SHOW BOAT with Dame Cleo Laine at the Adelphi Theatre - the show was such a smash-hit that it ran for a then-record 2 years and 3 months. The production was recorded and presented on the Tony Awards as the best International production of that season. Lorna fell in love with London, staying in the UK to star in many musicals (SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, HELLO DOLLY! (with Danny La Rue), and THE KING AND I among them), the European premiere of CLOSER THAN EVER, SEVEN DEADLY SINS in Monaco's Princes Grace Theatre, concerts in all the major London venues (Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Palladium, Theatre Royal Drury Lane) and worldwide with the major symphony orchestras with conductors Skitch Henderson and Don Pippin (Carnegie Hall, New York Town Hall, Brisbane Cultural Center, Napa Valley Opera House), the Hong Kong Arts Festival, extensive television appearances including The Royal Variety Performance and her own highly rated BBC series, MY SERENADE and LORNA DALLAS. . .MY MUSICAL WORLD. http://WWW.LORNADALLAS.COM

Frances Fricker was told by her boss which photo to put on her work profile because HE thought it was the most attractive. It's estimated that Lipoedema effects up to 1 in 10 women in the UK. It's the build up of fat cells in the bottom, legs and sometimes the arms. Until recently the most common type of treatment was liposuction – which permanently removes fat cells – but as of last month the regulator NICE has said liposuction can no longer be used as a treatment in the UK – deeming it unsafe and ineffective. We hear from Sharie Fetzer from Lipoedema UK and a patient who was halfway through her liposuction treatment when the rules changed.

“BREWS, POURS And SIPS” From AmericaOnCoffee sharing eventful happenings
[It was] a groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, A Chorus Line, set a Broadway standard when it debuted in 1975 and [yet, it still] remains relevant today. A Chorus Line is a musical with a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, and lyrics by Edward Kleban. It shows an insider's view of the casting and audition process that goes in a Broadway show, centering around seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. The show won nine Tony Awards, along with a Special Tony Award for becoming Broadway's longest-running musical in 1984, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1976. Production History A Chorus Line was formed from several taped workshop sessions with Broadway dancers known as “gypsies.” The taping for the first session was at the Nickolaus Exercise Center in January 1974, with lead dancers hoping they could form a professional dance company for workshops for Broadway dancers. Original Broadway productions The show opened off-Broadway at The Public Theater on April 15, 1975. It was directed by Michael Bennett and co-choreographed by Bob Avian and Bennett. Word about the show quickly spread, creating a demand for tickets that the entire run sold out immediately. A Chorus Line premiered on Broadway in July 1975 at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran until April 1990 for 6,137 performances. The original cast included: Robert Lupone as Zach Clive Clerk as Larry Donna McKechnie as Cassie Ron Kuhlman as Don Kay Cole as Maggie Wayne Cilento as Mike Baayork Lee as Connie Michel Stuart as Greg Carole Bishop as Sheila Thomas J. Walsh as Bobby Nancy Lane as Bebe Trish Garland as Judy Ronald Dennis as Richie Don Percassi as Al Renee Baughman as Kristine Pamela Blair as Bal Cameron Mason as Mark Sammy Williams as Paul Priscilla Lopez as Dianna Most of the original cast went on to perform in the Los Angeles production. The new cast of the “New” New York Company included Ann Reinking, Christopher Chadman, Sandahl Bergman, Justin Ross, and Barbara Luna. When the show closed, it became the longest-running show in Broadway history until 1997, when Cats surpassed it. Original West End production A London production of A Chorus Line opened in the West End at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1976. Initially, the international cast from the US retained their roles, including Jane Summerhays as Sheila. The original British cast took over the next year. It included: Jean-Pierre Cassel as Zach Jack Gunn as Larry Elizabeth Seal/Petra Siniawski as Cassie Lance Aston as Don Veronica Page as Maggie Michael Howe as Mike Cherry Gillespie as Connie Stephen Tate as Greg Geraldine Gardner as Sheila Leslie Meadows as Bobby Susan Claire as Bebe Judy Gridley as Judy Roy Gayle as Richie Jeff Shankley as Al Vicki Spencer as Kristine Linda Williams as Val Peter Barry as Mark Michael Staniforth as Paul Diane Langton as Dianna Plot Overview A tribute and celebration of the unsung heroes of the musical theatre, the chorus dancers, A Chorus Line examine a day in the lives of seventeen dancers all vying for a spot in a chorus line of a Broadway musical. Chorus dancers are often over-dedicated, highly trained, but are underpaid, and when they back up the star, they make him or her look more talented than they really are. For the most part, the characters portrayed in the show are based on the real-life experiences of Broadway dancers. The story takes the audience to a roller coaster of emotions as a group of potential Broadway performers is put through a dynamic series of dance numbers. Their numbers are gradually reduced from whom Zach, the director, must make his final choice. www.acriticsrant.com Image: Pinterest.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brewspoursandsipsdotcom/support

Melanie is not just a singer and a songwriter; she is a big part of American Music History. If you haven’t heard of her, that’s not an accident, the corporate record labels have done their best to hide and downplay her incredible career. Why? Because she was the first female singer to create her own record label. The corporate big wigs have done their best to erase her accomplishments, but guess what, they have failed miserably. You see, you can’t keep a spirit like Melanie’s under a cover, you can’t hide her, and you certainly cannot ignore her. Listen to her story as she tells you snips from history which leads up to her first online streaming concert coming up on January 30th, 2021.
