This is Episode 61 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Dr. Joshua Mayo, associate professor of English at Grove City College, gives his second keynote address on Cheerful Truth—the need to let go of pretentious sophistication—at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Josh Mayo is chair and associate professor of English at Grove City College, where he teaches British literature, composition, and the “Good Books” (feel free to ask him about this favorite term). He and his wife Bethany, along with their five children—Ezra, Silas, Ainley, Zoe Claire and Finn—live in Western Pennsylvania (in a technical sense). But for most of the year, Josh's soul dwells in a little fishing village in Maine called “New Harbor.” Additional relevant notes: he feels inspired by Beowulf, confused by Flannery O'Connor, and elated by Dickens.

Craig and Mark Ainley, a contemporary Feng Shui consultant and the founder of Sense of Space based in Vancouver. Ainley sheds light on the intricate interplay between design, colour, and functionality in retail spaces. He emphasizes the need to move beyond conventional perceptions of Feng Shui, showcasing its relevance in optimizing the layout and ambiance of homes, businesses, and, notably, retail establishments. Mark Ainley Ainley discusses his expertise in aligning the design of spaces with their primary functions, offering a blend of aesthetics and functionality. He dispels common misconceptions about Feng Shui, illustrating its application in creating spaces that resonate with individuals, whether they live, work, or shop there. The discussion delves into the impact of subtle design elements on customer behaviour, from the positioning of tables to the psychology of colour and the importance of maintaining an inviting exterior. The conversation extends to the nuances of retail, exploring how small details like cleanliness, lighting, and signage play a pivotal role in attracting customers. Ainley draws from his experiences, including a fascinating observation of a store with a table angle affecting foot traffic. As the dialogue unfolds, the focus shifts to the significance of visual merchandising, the changing dynamics of window displays, and the role of technology in enhancing or detracting from the overall retail experience. Ainley concludes by urging businesses to prioritize the physiological welcome and call to action within their spaces, fostering an authentic and enjoyable shopping experience that goes beyond the convenience of online alternatives. Interviewed this episode:Mark Ainley, Flow Optimization Specialist, Contemporary Feng Shui Facilitator and Instructor, WELL APSense of Space Subscribe, Rate, and Review our Retail Insider Podcast!Follow Craig:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/CraigPattersonTorontoInstagram: @craig_patterson_torontoTwitter: @RI_EICFollow Retail Insider:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/Retail-InsiderFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/RetailInsider/Twitter: @RetailInsider_Instagram: @Retail_Insider_CanadaListen & Subscribe:Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastStitcherShare your thoughts!Drop us a line at Craig@Retail-Insider.com. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

It's happened again: it's the end of the season, and all our long-dead relatives have come back as Cybermen. Only this time, instead of hanging around the kitchen reeking of tobacco, they're wandering through graveyards and — well, that's it really, wandering through graveyards. Fortunately, Missy is here to liven things up a bit. It's Death in Heaven. Notes and links Nathan alludes to discovering during the week of recording some of the terrible consequences of Australia's presence in Afghanistan. This is upsetting reading, so content warnings apply. We mention Doctor Who and the Silurians as a previous story where the Doctor comes into conflict with soldiers, and we refer to El Sandifer's take on the end of that story, a scene which presents this conflict explicitly but which is never followed up in any satisfactory way. Richard brings up Chris Addison's Radio 4 comedy series Civilisation, which co-stars the original Ford Prefect, Geoffrey McGivern. And, finally, the Doctor plummeting to his death from a plane inevitably reminds us of Roger Moore in a similar situation as James Bond in Moonraker (1979). Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Richard is @RichardLStone, and Todd is @ToddBeilby. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook and Mastodon, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or next birthday we'll give you a bafflingly expensive and impractical gift. And more You can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the entirety of the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We'll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show's entire run. Recording of our coverage of Series C is nearing its conclusion: it will be ready for you later in the year. There's also our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called Genesis, in which the crew devolve into various types of monsters and animals, upsetting fans who have the (baffling) expectation that their franchise will take itself more seriously.

'Plankton" consists of phytoplankton (~plants) and zooplankton (-animals). It represents the basis of the ocean food chain and it includes many species; it's a very complex 'multi-species soup' representing a true science frontier hardly tackled, understood or managed yet. Copepods are part of that taxonomic set up and they contribute usually to the majority - up to 70% - of zooplankton abundance in oceans. Using field data of the Italian National Antarctic Program from the 1980s and 1990s here we model-predict in an interdisciplinary international team effort for 26 copepod species at three ocean depth classes (0-10m, 11-70m, 71-750m) the relative index of occurrence (RIO) for the wider study area of the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area (a world-record MPA and ocean wilderness area of global size and relevance). This research uses Machine Learning/AI ensembles and Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) methods to generalize from the Open Access dataset available from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF.org) using the 'Macroscope predictors' (see Huettmann et al. 2015 for details, source and use). Further details are provided in Grillo et al. (2022; compare also with Pinkerton et al. 2010). This work matters as a global workflow template and it allows to obtain 3D models in GIS for plankton abundance, e.g. as needed for foraging estimates of marine mammals, penguins and fisheries. It can also be used for life-history research, carbon sequestration work in climate models as well as for baselines in carrying capacity formulas for fisheries and generic predator-prey studies. The relevance of sound harvest models for krill and fish, e.g. in the so-called 'experimental' fisheries work with CCAMLR and the MPA in the Ross Sea has been outlined by Ainley et al. (2012) and others. Here we offer a solution towards sustainability in times of a generic ocean crisis. References (selection; in order of citation) Grillo M, F. Huettmann, L. Guglielmo and S. "What are you concealing from me, boy?" Not enough, some might say, for this is Castrovalva - where Master Waterhouse introduces the innocent and unsuspecting viewer to "Little Matthew" . But that's not the only harrowing element of the Fifth Doctor's first outing. The Time Lord himself is made incompetent (and incontinent?) by his regeneration but still gets to go on a self-propelling wheelchair and pulls off decent impressions of his former selves - and Basil Fawlty (the War Hotelier). Tegan gets hot and bothered, Nyssa gets moist and, of course, Adric has a semi on, before they all meet Chardonnay Shardovan and his sheep-in-wolf's-clothing chums. There's a fly in the ointment, of course, and this one has a risible, raisable platform, a double-decker perspex top hat and a penchant for looking at boys on the dark web. But does the new Doctor bowl Jim and Martin over? Or is he out first ball? Find out here.

Turlough and Kamelion leave, the Master shows up in miniaturized form, and Peri shows off her acting chops. Also, a response to an email from a regular listener who has a problem with Oi! Spaceman's implicit racism.  Main Topic: Planet of Fire. Johnny Cash. No guest! Shana and Jack. The Oi! Spaceman way. Plugging stuff. River Song's lipstick. Racist Oi! Spaceman. Definitely not cowardly. "I check the email and you don't." MLK and me. Turlough and his short shorts. Not too Tina Belcher. "Just queer." Didn't care about the plot. A big happy polyam fam. Turlough's privilege. Subtext. Turlough and River. Shana doesn't engage with fan culture. Very 1985. Hired for her tits. Rock-climbing Peri. Annoyed Shana. Cerebro. Dialed-down Ainley. General Master thoughts. The metaphor of the monster. Kamelion murdered. Missing Tegan. Numismatic versus pneumatic. Religion. Pacing. Next week: Caves of Androzani. "It's not exactly dull travelling with the Doctor." Not normally, Tegan. Not normally... But this is the season 19 closer, Time-Flight, in which the Doctor seems to be under heavy sedation, OmNyssia knows all the answers, Tegan remains an air hostess (not that she ever hints at this) and Adric is still dead (mercifully). The Master is at large too, coercing a plane-full of extras into caressing an inner sanctum, wherein lies a battery crammed full of blokes and an orang-utan's family jewels. He also finds time to co-ordinate a platoon of turd men, all while nursing a projectile cold. But which passenger is Victor Foxtrot? Why is Concorde's progress monitored from a broom cupboard? And why on (prehistoric) Earth is the Master cosplaying as the last Widow Twankey in the job centre, even when he's on his Jack Jones? Listen in to hear Jim, Martin and special guest Ian Atkins pick through the wreckage.

In this episode Shana and Daniel wave goodbye to Tom Baker (for now) in their discussion of Logopolis. First, though, Daniel rambles on by himself for a few minutes about why you're not getting a discussion of Sleep No More and Face the Raven today. There's some computer science, some mispronouncing of words, some chat about Hitler and even a little bit of conversation about the episode in question. Shana might even prefer Ainley to Delgado!  Main Topic: Logopolis. Sexual fetish out the gate. Out of order recording. "Jack Graham and Hitler." Americans don't get parlaimentary systems. Last stories. "Who's that White Dude?" Bratty Four. Billions of people killed. Dad's going through his goth phase. Resourceful Adric. Bidmead. Pacing. Preistly numerology. Visuals. All have wedge-heads. Authortarian monitor. Neal Stephenson. Moustache-twirling. Terror of the Autons. Jokers and Batmans. Regeneration. Interiority of the Master. Deserts. Daniel can't pronounce "Logopolitans." Cultural appropriation of radio telescope designs. "A little niche even for Doctor Who fans." Change three words. New podcast spinoff. Not a metaphor. Tom Baker's last season. Wrapping Up. Next week: Castrovalva. Adolf Hitler was not democratically elected.  Find Our Stuff!  Find us on iTunes! Or Facebook! In this episode, Shana and Daniel take a look at Tom Baker's penultimate story: The Keeper of Traken. First they discuss a bit of the real-world politics surrounding the Paris terrorist attacks from the weekend, in particular the not-particularly-surprising revelation that Gareth Roberts is a right-wing douchebag. After moving on to the titular episode, they discuss Nyssa, Adric, the burnt-up Master, and the limits of political authority.  Main Topic: Keeper of Traken. Irish racist. Terrorist violence. Only white people eating baguettes and wearing berets. Gareth Roberts and Twitter. Killing tens of thousands of people with drones. Representation. Us and them. Daniel is too effeminate. Nyssa and the Return of the Master. Costuming and sets. Ainley. Kassia. Traditional femininity. Nyssa's costume. Other costumes. New blood. Adric as companion. "Math things." "What a haughty stuck up bitch!" The Master and the Melkur. The Keeper. The Paparazzi? Whither evil? Yin and Yang. Systemic corruption. Shana Godwins the podcast. Daniel's biases. On this weeks edition of the Who's He? Podcast they've gone beige with an audio commentary for episodes 1 and 2 of Castrovalva.  During the dissection of this story, they bravely try to bring you facts of the day of original broadcast and make Tony play the guess the ratings game.  The lads are also fuelled with wine which causes Phil to make a rather naughty comment! And in the news, they catch up all the leaks from the BBC, news of a BFI showing of Deep Breath and in Omega's Tat Corner, action figures that seem to get worse the more they make.

Doctor Who: The Krynoid PodCast

"It's the end… but the moment has been prepared for."   The final words of the boggle-eyed mentalist octogenarian Tom Baker, just prior to being trampled by a crusty ballet dancer and so triggering his metamorphosis into the world's wettest vet.   Jim and Martin start this episode by skewering The Time of the Doctor but then evaluate another regeneration story, 1981's Logopolis.   The fourth Doctor is old and grumpy and the Master is new and campy, while Adric "wunts" to help, Tegan wants to fly and Nyssa just wants to have fun, despite losing her step mother, father and planet in short order.   Can Noel Edmonds keep the fabric of the Universe together? Can the Doctor's plan to literally flush out the Master be any more ludicrous? And can Anthony Ainley make any more of a meal of pressing a button?   Listen here to find out.
