Could episode 5 be where you find your heaven? Well, if you get that musical reference, then perhaps so. Guy and Rob are going all in on the 90s nostalgia. A Samantha Janus odyssey covering Game On, with its groundbreaking attitudes, jarring cast changes, and "skunk pussies," followed by Up 'n' Under, the John Godber play turned 90s BritCom. Hot off the heels of the Full Monty, this Yorkshire set (but not filmed) Rugby League comedy took advantage of the cream of TV comedy acting at the time. Not just the aforementioned Janus, but 2.4 Children's Gary Olsen, Men Behaving Badly's Neil Morrissey, not to mention John Thompson, Griff Rhys Jones, and a whole load more. Join us for our first play adaptation and stay for the quiz, where Guy would have to do some serious winning to cancel out last week's thrashing. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Hugo Morley, grandson of actor Robert Morley. Depending on what age you are and what country you grew up in, you might know Robert Morley for different things. If you are an American, you know him from his stint as the spokesman for British Airways or possibly the film Who Is Killing The Great Chef's of Europe with George Segal and Jacqueline Bisset. It was fascinating to find out from Hugo, that Robert actually had a lot of leeway in the BA commercials direction. But if you grew up in England or Australia, you might know Robert Morley from the stage where he performed in about 100 films and starred in/wrote many plays. His career spanned more than sixty years and in fact, his first film role garnered an Academy Award nomination in 1939 as King Louis XVI in Marie Antoinette, starring Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power. That's one hell of a debut. Hugo was open with us and told us about (free) trips he took with his grandfather and family thanks to British Airways, of meals he shared with him and time spent in Robert Morley's back garden. There was swimming and cigars….for Robert, not Hugo. We also learn about Hugo's theater critic/actor father, Sheridan Morley who was quite well known in England. We learn about his influence on the musical Les Miserables, how an interview with Carol Channing led to Hugo becoming her Godmother and how Yul Brenner played a part in their relationship. Along the way we talk about everyone from Eli Wallach to David Tomlinson, Griff Rhys Jones, to Joanna Lumley and more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

This week's guest is a man more used to asking the questions - the writer and broadcaster Clive Anderson. A former barrister, Clive turned to comedy and wrote for the likes of Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones before gaining radio & television fame as the host of top improvisational comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway? He then went on to present a series of chat shows and interviewed some of the biggest stars on the planet, including Spike Milligan, and it's this that we take as our starting point. Clive talks about his career and many of the shows and people he's been involved with, including WLIIA, Loose Ends, If I Ruled The World, Peter Cook, Tony Slattery, John Sessions, Graeme Garden and Keith Allen. He also talks about his reaction to the Brass Eye segment claiming he'd been shot dead by Noel Edmonds, remembers seeing Harry Secombe miming on stage and shudders as he recalls *that* interview with the Bee Gees.
Comedy writer, novelist and playwright Jon Canter joins Tyler this week. He talks about Spike Milligan and some of the people he's had the pleasure of working with over the course of his career, including Miriam Margolyes, Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, Douglas Adams, Lenny Henry, Richard Wilson, Mel Smith & Griff Rhys-Jones and John Lloyd. They also discuss Margaret Thatcher trying comedy and Prince Charles dancing to Hot Stuff. It's a packed show folks!
Actor and sailor Griff Rhys Jones on why he feels safer on stage than on water. The sea doesn't stick to a script, he warns Griff Rhys Jones is no stranger to water. Hear why to this day he still gets a nagging feeling about the sea – a place he regards at times as a place of frenzy. His appreciation for the RNLI goes all the way back to his early trips to West Mersea, where his father once tied a man upside down to a ladder – Griff explains why it was a kinder act than it sounds! And says that, although many things have moved on in 200 years, the RNLI ethos remains largely unchanged. 200 Voices is produced by Adventurous Audio for the RNLI Interview by the RNLI's Rory Stamp Soundtrack composed and performed by Jon Nicholls The RNLI is a charity celebrating 200 years of saving lives at sea - find out more at RNLI.org/200

As next week sees the 100th edition of Goon Pod drop, here's a special 100-minute long Easter bumper bonus episode! Tyler shares clips of some of the many guests he's hosted on the pod over the last hundred shows - the selection is designed to showcase how the show has developed and evolved and (in theory) can be enjoyed by anyone with even a passing knowledge of the Goons, as long as they like fifties, sixties and seventies (and eighties & nineties) popular culture and especially comedy. So you'll hear from the likes of Al Murray, David Quantick, Mike McCartney, Griff Rhys Jones, Margaret Cabourn-Smith and Mike Fenton Stevens as well as many others PLUS some never-before-heard material! (This episode is better than an Easter egg because it's less fattening, won't stain the furniture and even your dog can enjoy it) Twitter: @goonshowpod

"He opened the door and there he was standing in just a pair of gold boxer shorts..." This was how a young BBC Radio producer named Griff Rhys Jones met Frankie Howerd for the first time! Griff - who will be touring his new show from May and filming Griff's Vietnam Adventure this year - joined Tyler to talk about his career (which does include a prominent role in the film adaptation of Spike Milligan's Puckoon) and was more than happy to reminisce about his time on the likes of Not The Nine O'Clock News, Alas Smith & Jones and The Young Ones, as well as university revues, radio, plays and his subsequent documentaries and travel shows over the last twenty years. Includes chat about: * Mel Smith and their long comedy partnership * Some favourite S&J sketches (including Porno & Bribeasy) * The Homemade Xmas Video * The Two Ninnies and Ronnie Barker's reaction to it * Being Bambi * Alexei Sayle * Douglas Adams * John Lloyd * Chris Langham * Beryl Reid flirting with him * The post-war generation of comedians * Almost appearing in Blackadder the Third * Restoration * Cleaning skyscraper windows in New York * Performing in Australia and New Zealand * The television landscape * Reacting to critics * And working with Frankie of course!

#WeMakeEvents was launched in April 2020, soon after the first coronavirus lockdown, by PLASA, the Professional Lighting and Sound Association, to highlight the plight of its membership, the majority of whom are freelance workers and therefore not eligible for government furlough payments. The campaign has grown to include other industry bodies and has become a global movement, with major performance venues lighting their buildings in red to highlight the red alert status of the industry. It offers financial assistance, wellbeing support and advice as well as campaigning with governments and the public to raise awareness. The campaign has attracted a great many celebrity endorsements, including from stand-up comedian, comedy writer and sports presenter Kevin Day, who took part in a promotional video for #WeMakeEvents with fellow comics Griff Rhys Jones, Lucy Porter and Stephen K Amos. Kevin has been prominent on the UK comedy scene since the late ‘80s when he performed regularly at The Comedy Store. He has written for Dave Allen and Jo Brand and continues to write for the long-running BBC comedy show Have I Got News For You. He spoke to BTG editor David Chadderton about how essential production staff are to theatre, festivals, live comedy and many other events, how important the live performance industry is to the UK economy and to the wellbeing of the country and how lockdown has personally affected him and his family—his son is also a stand-up comedian and his wife works in theatre production and event management. For more information on the campaign, to make a donation, to buy merchandise or to find assistance if you are affected by the crisis, see the #WeMakeEvents web site. Through industry charity Backup, you can also make donations via a texting service: text “ONETWO” plus the donation amount in numbers to 70085 (for instance, text ONETWO12 to donate £12).

Jools and Jim log on to Zoom for a remote catch-up with Griff Rhys Jones, who transports them off the road and onto the water. More accustomed to sailing the seas than classic cars, the comedian and broadcaster recalls childhood holidays spent on his father's hand-built boat, as well as problems with pronunciation while filming Three Men in a Boat (something Jim proves he has no problem with). The three laud the joys of the inland waterways and talk sea monsters, sub-par submarines and unusual purchases at auction… A Dig! "Children's television is wonderful for people starting out in the industry because there tends to be more opportunity for people who don't have a long list of credits." — Wendy Gray I've fast-tracked a few skills after discovering the short courses offered by the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS). In this episode, I chat to Wendy Gray from AFTRS about their courses and who they're designed for. We also chat about Wendy's career in the screen industry, including her extensive experience working in children's television. Friendly manners: this is not a paid endorsement. Podcast Guest Profile Wendy Gray currently runs the short course and industry certificate programs at the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS). Over the last seven years she has been Head of the Open Program, Head of the TV Unit and began life at AFTRS as the Industry Program Manager. In her current role she liaises with Industry through the Industry Advisory Panels, runs industry-related events and oversees the development and delivery of industry short courses and industry certificates. Wendy started her career in the media at ABC TV, where she worked for twelve years in a wide variety of production roles, across all genres. Her final years at the ABC saw her devising, producing and directing a number of children’s television series including AFI-award winning series The Ferals and forty episodes of Play School. Subsequently as a freelance producer Wendy worked on a wide range of television productions, including documentary series Greatest Cities of the World with Griff Rhys-Jones, and The Upside Down Show, an award-winning children’s series with The Umbilical Brothers, Nickelodeon US and the Children’s Television Workshop. She returned to the ABC joining the (then) New Media Division to work on the launch of ABC2, designing and executing channel branding and program development and production. Wendy has also worked on a number of online projects including working as Online Content Producer in the marketing department for Southern Cross and as a senior website producer for Gadfly Media, supervising website content for clients such as SOCOG and NRMA. She also worked for the Australian Film Commission (now Screen Australia) on a major online content project Australian Screen Online and taught production at SAE Byron Bay. Do celebrities really add all that much to an ad? After all, many of the most definitive campaigns have featured people who were barely better known than a dead hermit. In this episode, the History of Advertising Podcast tries to get to the bottom of the issue by looking at campaigns from Birds Eye (one of the first to use ‘real', regional actors) and Holsten Pills (featuring Griff Rhys Jones and the revived digital corpse of John Wayne).

"Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, this is an interesting world I find myself in - fits me rather neatly, don't you think?" Douglas Noel Adams wasn't even fifty when he died in 2001, but his imagination had already roamed far. He created The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Meaning of Liff and several episodes of Doctor Who, plus the Dirk Gently character and Last Chance to See. Nominating him is his co-writer on Last Chance to See, the zoologist Mark Carwardine. Mark's role, Adams said later, was to be the one who knew what he was talking about. "My role was to be an extremely ignorant non-zoologist to whom everything that happened would come as a complete surprise." Joining Mark Carwardine and Matthew Parris in the bar where this was recorded is Douglas Adam's biographer, Jem Roberts. With archive of Stephen Fry, John Lloyd, Naomi Alderman, Griff Rhys Jones and Geoffrey Perkins. The producer in Bristol is Miles Warde.
It's another returning guest, as Looks Unfamiliar host Tim Worthington is back, and he's brought some Morons From Outer Space with him. Directed by Mike Hodges, who also brought us Get Carter, a very different movie. Starring Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones, there are lots of comparisons with other British TV comedians and the numerous sci-fi films that this film rips off and perhaps inspired. During the pod, I reference a BFI piece about the movie, including a video interview with the director. Here's the link: http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/why-i-love-morons-outer-space Hopefully Tim will return to discuss some more movies - in the meantime, his podcast is essential listening and is one of a number of nostalgia goldmines on his website https://timworthington.org/looksunfamiliar/

The song I’ve sent you this week is one you will relate to as you know the subject well “Song of Anglesey” sung by my pal Paul Damian…although it is now on a CD album it was originally the B side of my now viral “How To Say Llanfairpwll….etc”….so in effect it sold just a many…which was a lot….the long word song is approaching a million hits on YouTube. I wrote quite a few songs for Paul and my one regret is I never kept the outtakes….I don’t know whose language was worse…his or mine…..great days…Paul now lives in Spain and I miss him a lot. 2.There is an obesity crisis in this country…or so we keep getting told on the news…along with an increase in dementure….and lung problems with fuel emissions…etc…etc….I’m beginning to wonder whether there is anyone who is actually well out there…..perhaps if people didn’t smoke they wouldn’t have lung problems and if they got off their mobile phones and did some exercise they wouldn’t be obese…or am I over simplifying things….or perhaps if the news was a bit more positive it might help instead of doom and gloom. The latest is they want to ban “tackling” in school rugby….in case the poor little chaps get hurt…so that looks like the end of future top class rugby for this country? We only need 30 minutes of news but we get 24 hours…thus we have 23 and a half hours of padding. 3.We have chosen our song entry for the Eurovision…..Joe and Jake are flying the flag….I watched the other contenders and theirs was by far the best and I think the girls will like them so there is a possibility we will get more than nil pwa this year…..I can’t remember the name of the song … oops…but it was quite good. Apparently the two lads are off the The Voice…so Mr.Cowell wonthave a finger in the pie for a change. I must say I watch the Eurovision and I enjoy it…even though I wish I didn’t. It was amazing…Ant and Dec weren’t involved!!!....can’t understand it….they are NEVER off our screens!!!....perhaps they should take a well earned holiday (couple of years?) and give us all a rest…we deserve it. They are even on the adverts..so there is NO escape. 4.I also watched the Academy Awards….is there some sort of controversy about the lack of black nominees?....er….I think so as they have been going on and on about it for months!! I must say that Chris Rock was brilliant…I am a huge fan of his and think he is one of the best comedians around. I always think it’s all a bit too glamorous and out dated for todays market….and fail to see the point…what do I care if Joe Bloggs wins an award…doesn’t effect ME in the slightest….I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. 5.There is a new programme on TV featuring Julia Bradberry doing Lake District walks…it’s great stuff especially as I recognise the places having walked there myself…plus Julia is very easy on the eye…and Griff Rhys Jones did a similar programme wandering around Wales…I particularly enjoyed the feature on Anglesey as I have walked around the whole island over the years. This sort of programme is of interest to everyone (or should be)….instead of being bombarded with idiots having tattoos removed or cosmetic surgery on their fat out of shape bodies…I can’t imagine anyone watching that garbage…but there you go.
He has written a play based on his memoir, I Loved Lucy, about his friendship with the legendary comedienne, Lucille Ball. He met her as a 10-year-old and became her close friend and companion until her death in 1989. I Loved Lucy is at the Jermyn Street Theatre, London. Mona Golabek is a concert pianist who tells her mother's story in The Pianist of Willesden Lane. Set in Vienna in 1938 and in London during the Blitz, the one-woman show is the true story of Lisa Jura, a young Jewish pianist dreaming about her concert debut at Vienna's Musikverein concert hall. But with the issuing of new ordinances under the Nazi regime, everything for Lisa changes, except for her love of music, as she is torn from her family and sent onto the Kindertransport to London. The Pianist of Willesden Lane is at the St. James Theatre, London. Griff Rhys Jones is a comedian, writer, actor and presenter. Born in Brazil, he has a passion for bromeliads and tends Kew's collection which originates from the southern United States, South America and the West Indies. .Sad news about Richard Attenborough....He was in one of the funniest sketches I've ever seen...it was about 25 years ago in a programme called "Alas it's Smith and Jones"....with Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones.....he said he had just completed filming Ghandi and required the music track...to which Mel said he had the man to do it...the best...Griff then turns up on a pushbike with a banjo and sings a ridiculous song in a 48 track studio....Sir Richard played it dead straight concluding with "GET HIM OUT OF HERE!!"....I always admire anyone who sends themselves up.....great guy. Kate Bush has recently made a comeback after 30 odd years...and stormed it in a live concert...rave reviews....never quite got her...bit too far out for my taste...but good luck to her....however I did like the orchestration on Wuthering Heights….and unfortunately the X Factor is returning….the least talent being behind the judges desk The Nanny State strikes again!!....some bright spark who is obviously trying to create a job for himself has suggested that the over 50's should be advised (via a leaflet) on how to handle forthcoming old age...re organising pensions and how to keep fit etc.....OVER 50's!!!!!....then another bright spark suggested this was too young...maybe OVER 65s....I looked at these blokes and thought I'm better looking...more intelligent....and more talented than both of them put together...they know where they can stick their advice. When a nine year old girl gets taught how to use an automatic weapon (with drastic consequences) one has to seriously question the mentality of Americans….they are so quick to condemn others….what a hypocritical nation they are……and the “proud” parents filming it……I despair. The song I have sent you this week should be close to your heart as it's about your home......The Wirral Song.....this came to me when I was standing on Thurstaston Hill in the 80s and thought there's the Mersey...there's the Dee...and there's the Irish Sea....gotta be a song there so I came up with this one....I took it to the Wirral Council who ordered 4000 copies to promote their leisure services...I wrote a a Bside (as it was vinyl) about the Wirral Way....the song actually made the local Top Ten as compiled by one of the local major stores

Don told me, " I watched Benidorm this week to see if there was any improvement…absolute rubbish…badly written with a collection of mismatched characters who can’t act…with a string of unfunny jokes and a helping of bad taste…plus an appearance by Mathew Kelly to add to the trash….ITV have hit rock bottom with this one. The BBC are a bit worried about their viewers using modern technology to watch their programmes on I Player…because apparently the licence fee only applies to LIVE tele….so when you watch recorded stuff you may not need a licence….I’ve always said the Beeb want sorting out…they have just abandoned a set up which was to involve a “digital storer” designed to store thousands of programmes…it failed…it cost 20 million quid…which has now gone down the drain…nice to know where our licence fee goes. .I watched the Paul and Ringo get together on the Grammy Awards…I must say they both looked good…I’m going to invest in whatever make-up they were using….I thought Katy Perry was quality as she was burnt at the stake…and Pink who was hanging from a rope around her ankles and spinning round…makes me glad I’ve semi retired if that’s what you’ve gotta do to get a gig these days. There’s quite a lot on the tele about the Great War with it being the anniversary…the diaries were fascinating showing that there was a lot more to it all than “going over the top”…all this should be shown as it should never be forgotten…whether we will ever learn is another matter. Coach Trip is back with good old Brendan camping it up…I must say I love this programme…especially the last bit when they have to vote someone off….also there is another good programme with Griff Rhys Jones travelling around Wales..this week was Anglesey…brilliant. The latest is to make smoking in cars where there are children illegal….what next?....in my opinion people who smoke anywhere should be issued with a goldfish bowl to be worn over their head so they can recycle their own smoke…but then again I don’t endulge…..but the people who come up with these ideas should be employed to enforce them instead of giving the police more work." ....and we looked at other news headlines that are taking the eye.....
