VYS0029 | If There's Something Strange In Your Neighbourhood - Vayse to Face to Face with Field Lines Cartographer and Bob Freeman: Halloween 2023 - Show Notes Four middle-aged men bravely join forces to confront ancient evils, spooks, spectres and ghosts - ok, so, Vayse did Ghostbusters last Halloween but instead, this year, Hine and Buckley welcome back master of the liminal soundscape, Field Lines Cartographer and the Occult Detective himself, Bob Freeman to sit around the virtual camp fire as they each tell a ghost story from their home towns. FLC tells a tale of Warwickshire plague pits and feelings of stalking dread in the dark, Hine recounts a gruesome murder in Preston which led to bloody revenge from beyond the grave, Bob spins a classic American yarn of haunted houses in the deep, dark woods of rural Indiana and Buckley tells of the spirit of a young boy who haunts the picturesque town of Great Corby bringing those who encounter him great fortune followed by certain death. The conversation also turns to whether ghosts are actually, really all that scary, the differences between ghost stories in the UK and the US, the nature of reality itself (of course, this is Vayse)... and digitally transported flies... (Recorded 10 October 2023) Thanks again to Keith for the show notes and thanks to everyone for listening - please tell a friend (or benignly neutral acquaintance) and ask them to do the same! Imagine having to undergo emergency surgery days before your first 100K race. It sounds like something that would be scary to come back from, but our guest today not only had that happen to him, but he also came back stronger than ever as he ended up finishing that same 100K a year later, qualified for Boston twice, and finished three 100 milers. This episode breaks down how he did it. Henry Howard is an ultrarunner, endurance coach, and content creator with Runspirited. He has completed numerous ultramarathons, and he helps endurance athletes reach their own goals and finish races as well. In this episode, Henry shares how he was able to bounce back stronger than ever from emergency surgery, his key principles on training for an ultramarathon, and mindset shifts he uses in his own training and racing to help him perform well on the trail. This is: Ghana has approved the use of a malaria vaccine with >70% efficacy, published by Henry Howard on April 19, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine showed 71%-80% efficacy in preventing cases of malaria in a randomised controlled phase 2 trial published at the end of last year. A phase 3 trial is ongoing. 67 (51%) of 132 children who received R21/Matrix-M with low-dose adjuvant, 54 (39%) of 137 children who received R21/Matrix-M with high-dose adjuvant, and 121 (86%) of 140 children who received the rabies vaccine developed clinical malaria by 12 months (the rabies vaccine was the control) The next best thing is the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, which WHO started rolling out in some pilot programs in 2016 after trials showed its reduced hospital admissions from severe malaria by around 30%, less impressive than R21/Matrix-M. A few days ago, Ghana's food and drugs administration announced that they've approved the R21/Matrix-M for children aged 5 months to 36 months. It seems like there will be more steps before the vaccines actually start rolling out (they might need to wait for WHO approval and/or the results of the phase 3 trial). In any case, very exciting news. I found out about this because it is on the In the news section of the front page of Wikipedia. Thanks for listening. In this episode of It's Never About Money, I am joined by Dr Henry Howard, a young Australian doctor who has devoted himself to make a positive impact on the world. In his first year working as a doctor in 2021, he dedicated 50% of my income to effective charities. Now, he's pledged to donate 10% of his income to effective charities for the rest of his life. We talk about effective giving, empathy burnout, and getting joy from the simple things in life (like a chocolate biscuit and a cup of tea). This was a truly fascinating conversation with a truly brilliant man. Enjoy! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Dean Karlan is now Chief Economist of USAID, published by Henry Howard on January 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In November 2022, the United Stated Agency for International Development appointed Professor Dean Karlan as their Chief Economist. Dean Karlan is a development economist who founded Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) in 2002 and has been its president since. He's also on the Executive Committee of MIT's Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). IPA and J-PAL have been responsible for a lot of the research that underpins GiveWell's charity recommendations (GiveWell has a 2011 overview of IPA's contributions here). Their work includes: Evidence for the effectiveness of free vs. priced bednets Ongoing work on unconditional cash transfers Evidence for positive effects from deworming (a 2019 Cochrane review suggests otherwise) Work suggesting that microfinance isn't that great Evidence for the effectiveness of chlorine dispensers Work on incentives for immunisation This is among hundreds of other policy/intervention evaluations the two groups have done. Dean Karlan seems to have played a big role in advancing evidence-based global development. USAID has an allocation of $29.4 billion for 2023. Wikipedia says this is the world's largest aid budget. If Prof. Karlan improves the effectiveness of the USAID program by even a small amount it could have a huge positive impact. Thanks for listening. In our final episode of the year we team up with Henry Howard of runspirited.com to run through his list of the most inspiring runners of the year.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why I gave AUD$12,573 to Innovations For Poverty Action, published by Henry Howard on November 29, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I gave 50% of my 1st-year doctor's salary to charity last year. This was mostly to GiveWell-recommended and The Life You Can Save-recommended charities. The largest share went to Innovations For Poverty Action, a global development research organisation that designs and runs trials of global development interventions around the world in order to find which interventions are effective. We need more global development cause discovery The main reason I favoured Innovations For Poverty Action is my feeling that the slow rate of discovery of new effective charities is a bottleneck for effective altruism. From what I can see, GiveWell has added one charity to its top recommendations in recent years (New Incentives) while it's entirely removed its list of about 10 "standout charities". I haven't noticed many new additions to The Life You Can Save's list of recommended charities in recent years. GiveWell maxxed out the funding of its top charities last year and, while they claim they now have room for hundreds of millions more dollars, this is still a drop in the pond when compared to the total amount of philanthropy and government aid money that is spent annually worldwide. Finding further effective global development causes should be top priority, so that governments and philanthropists can be advised to direct their funds more effectively. They probably know more than us Effective altruists do a lot of independent research looking at effective ways to make the world better. This is great. An example is the recent Open Philanthropy cause exploration prize. Most effective altruism enthusiasts aren't Nobel prize-winning economists nor do they have decades of experience in global development nor do they have extensive global networks to feed them information. This all probably puts the average effective giving enthusiast at a disadvantage when it comes to seeing and seizing on global development opportunities. When it comes to effective cause discovery I think it would be difficult for anyone to outperform established global development research organisations like Innovations for Poverty Action, The Jameel Poverty Action Lab, and the Center for Effective Global Action, each of which have established networks, experience, and track records. They have a good record Innovations for Poverty Action has conducted research showing that giving free bednets is more effective than charging for them, they conducted the research that led to Evidence Action's Dispensers for Safe Water program, they conducted the research around No Lean Season that first appeared to yield promising results but at scale was less promising (negative results are important too). They were recently involved in a promising trial of cash-transfers and cognitive behavioural therapy to reduce crime among at-risk young men in Liberia. You can give to them tax-deductably in Australia I've considered giving to The Jameel Poverty Action Lab or another global development research organisation. In Australia you can give to Innovations For Poverty Action via The Life You Can Save and the donation is tax-deductable. I don't know of a way to give to other global development research organisations tax-deductably from down here. Thanks for listening. Episode 11 features 2 awesome guests. First, fellow ultra-runner, adventure racer, and college professor of all things engineering, Ron Eaglin talks about his project to create software and eventual application to help with runner safety. In light of the recent kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher, Ron was inspired to make this his class project this year, so he and a team of intelligent engineering students will be working on a program to make existing applications like Strava, Garmin Connect, etc. more effective in making our fellow runners safer on their early morning and night time runs. Also, ultra-runner, coach, and writer, Henry Howard shares a bit of his running story, talks about his online ultra-running newsletter/blog, Runspirited, and answers a listener's training question.Links mentioned in the show:(2) Ron Eaglin | Facebook(2) Runspirited | FacebookUltra Running | RunspiritedSelf defense seminarFacebookFlorida Trail Runners Podcast Episode 56https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.spotify.com%2Fepisode%2F7tV2devDP0A445ztganlUA%3Fsi%3DIF1or0XtR1e48U_1c-gxHA%26fbclid%3DIwAR1vcjfT3fwkYouig3hjvR8Wg1oKp-mBXUN-DQI8qjLCkS2Opu0XfVdVrdA&h=AT1105BmpmvJIOHvsDtEsKaV-IxPe0YrdoKKdVhKMBhOi6MYL0T76-cUbI2W2dh0XsWXC5Ef8fv45hTnOqOecvQz28HiiRIGhI2Q3gnAX21t6Yd0GpNTg2-Ddx55bK4kq1wzjLE-U9wxZhcyhg&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT2zG2OfOrHx3Gv8ujiqVuQ1KBxc78dklZqTY2xtnDLQihirnEVGdorjTyK9t8yts98A6omV1a50_Kls49PGmu5StLHi0s13F41g0wFT6lAyvB_TK00KSrEwloXNHt2ropz_9xmXrPaOw1mYW26wKZ0G4f4rtDPBxMD1fLiplrzCpJJH5DgVoK2qeHvAv3CTA6JnEya7https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fpodcasts.apple.com%2Fus%2Fpodcast%2Fflorida-trail-runners-podcast%2Fid1605158267%3Fi%3D1000579230223%26fbclid%3DIwAR3poA2ZZ8tsXfRtxoTIa9Cwr46MlxrfPHM07lKStQLSX-HKwSmbyxW97F8&h=AT0tbcfEQmzCi6oD3yvpVhgdJgYiovhDzz9HfB_pOsqVgEJ0VcvoUOEGoBpPNxNVbl1vc3-3WmT6IoqTRUQALjO4P-WqXQQW03oNTuEZNXmDuGGStdXaTyJP-61icjQF24-dTm9-5ex0nLczGg&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT2zG2OfOrHx3Gv8ujiqVuQ1KBxc78dklZqTY2xtnDLQihirnEVGdorjTyK9t8yts98A6omV1a50_Kls49PGmu5StLHi0s13F41g0wFT6lAyvB_TK00KSrEwloXNHt2ropz_9xmXrPaOw1mYW26wKZ0G4f4rtDPBxMD1fLiplrzCpJJH5DgVoK2qeHvAv3CTA6JnEya7

He had served under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. On this day in Tudor history, 12th December 1595, Protestant Welsh soldier and author, Sir Roger Williams, died from a fever with his patron, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, at his side. He was buried at St Paul's Cathedral. Williams served as a soldier in the Low Countries and France, and was second in command of the cavalry under Essex at Tilbury Fort in 1588. He also wrote the 1590 “A Briefe Discourse of Warre”.At one point he incurred Queen ELizabeth I's wrath and had to go into hiding for a time. On this day in Tudor history, 2nd December 1586, following a joint petition from the Houses of Lords and Commons, Elizabeth I finally agreed to a public proclamation of sentence against Mary, Queen of Scots: death. Mary had been found guilty of high treason back in October 1586, but Elizabeth had not wanted to contemplate regicide. However, Parliament believed that if Mary, Queen of Scots, was not executed, that she'd continue to plot against Elizabeth and would utterly "ruinate and overthrow the happy State and Common Weal of this most Noble Realm". She was too much of a danger and needed dealing with once and for all. Find out what Parliament said and what happened next in today's talk from historian Claire Ridgway. King Henry VIII had just weeks to live and was increasingly paranoid, so the 'evidence' was just what Surrey's enemies needed to bring the earl down. Curated News Migratory Birds Like Native Berries Best | Audubon “Even when fruits of invasive plants are abundant, migratory songbirds seek out native berries, according to new research. As winter approaches and the food supply dwindles, birds move south and devour fall fruits along the way to fuel their trip. But they don’t eat just any fruit on their autumnal journeys: Birds are after native berries, according to a study published in Biological Conservation in January. Even in late autumn, when fruits of invasive plants like Japanese barberry and multiflora rose dominate the landscape, migratory songbirds traversing New England seek out native blueberries, black cherries, and raspberries instead. North American birds evolved alongside North American plants for many thousands of years, so these are the berries they’re most familiar with. But that’s not the only reason to choose one fruit over another: Previous research has found that native fruits are more nutritious than their invasive counterparts. ‘They can’t be eating fast food before they take off on really long migrations,’ says ecologist Amanda Gallinat at the Utah State University, who led the new study. ‘They need something with high energy.’” Our Favourite Garden Blogs..... | Sitting Spiritually The Blackberry Garden Leicester-based ‘amateur and somewhat obsessed gardener’ Alison Levey opens the gates to her own garden, as well as inspirations and things about gardening that make her happy. Important Events 1838 On this day, the botanist Asa Gray resigned from the Wilkes Expedition. Gray was frustrated by all of the delays, he was a person of action, and he also disliked Captain Charles Wilkes. Gray disagreed with Wilkes about the Latin descriptions of the new taxa, and he also disagreed with Wilkes's staffing rules. Wilkes wanted to work with Americans only. But, Gray knew the work of the expedition would suffer without the help of European experts. So, Gray decided to pivot, and he left the expedition to accept a position at the University of Michigan. But, before he could officially start that job, Harvard wooed him away. At Harvard, Gray established the science of botany in America, and he guided the country into the international botany arena and made it competitive. And, that was due, in large part, to all of the great relationships Gray had established with European botanists. And, Gray was also terrific friends with Charles Darwin. So, it's no surprise to learn that it was Asa Gray who said, “Natural selection is not the wind which propels the vessel, but the rudder which, by friction, now on this side and now on that, shapes the course.” 1949 On this day, a 79-year-old botanist, Dr. Melville Thurston Cook, his wife, and their pilot were rescued by an Air Force helicopter after a week in the Alaskan wilderness. Cook reported they survived on 90 dozen eggs after their plane was forced down in the rugged Brooks Mountain range. As luck would have it, one thousand eighty eggs were aboard the plane as cargo. Cook shared their ingenuity with the world, telling how they had not lacked for variety in their preparation of the eggs, enjoying fried eggs, boiled eggs, poached eggs, scrambled eggs, shirred eggs, and omelet. Naturally, when he wasn't eating eggs, Dr. Cook collected specimens. Dr. Cook, who would be 80 in September, and his wife had been vacationing in Alaska. In newspaper accounts, he said he never doubted the party would be saved. But the crash had impacted their priorities. Following the accident, Cook and his wife moved to be closer to their children. One of their four kids followed Cook's footsteps to become a plant pathologist, Dr. Harold T. Cook. Before the accident, Cook was finishing up his career by working as a visiting part-time professor of plant pathology at Louisiana State University. During his prime, Cook had gone botanizing with Nathaniel Lord Britton and Elizabeth Gertrude Britton in Puerto Rico. He had also worked with Henry Allan Gleason at the New York Botanical Garden - rubbing shoulders with botanical giants. 1977 On this day, Ethan Allen and Elvin McDonald of House Beautiful (ww.housebeautiful.com) gave an inspiring presentation called "Decorating with Plants." McDonald revealed many new decorating-with-plant ideas. Keep in mind; this was three decades before Instagram. Otherwise, McDonald would have no doubt share photos of the over 300 plants in his apartment. In the newspaper promotions for his presentation, McDonald was quoted as saying, "Take a pill if you will; I say take a plant to cope with everyday stress." 1983 On this day newspaper headline on this day in The Town Talk in Alexandria, Louisiana said, 'Rare Plant Halts Road Work.' It turns out, a fifteen-million-dollar highway-widening project near College Station was stopped because it threatened a tiny, rare, and unusual orchid plant. The Spiranthes parksii (ii = "ee-eye"), is also known as Navasota Ladies' Tresses because it grows along the Navasota River. This rare orchid is only six inches tall with white blooms. First discovered in 1945, the Spiranthes parksii was described by Donovan Stewart Correll in his 1950 book, Native Orchids of North America North of Mexico. And, when it became protected, the Navasota Ladies' Tresses were only the 54th U.S. plant species to be classified as endangered. 1988 On this day, British plant explorer Roy Lancaster revealed that a thriving black market for plants was threatening rare Chinese orchids. In the same way, an art collector might buy stolen works of art underground; elite plant collectors are the wealthy clients of orchid smugglers. Lancaster shared the plight of Paphiopedilum armeniacum ("paff-ee-oh-PED-ih-lum ar-MEN-ee-A-cum"), commonly known as the Golden Slipper Orchid - a rare orchid, which was discovered in 1980 but was 100 percent harvested from the world in 1983. In just three short years, the Golden Slipper Orchid had gone from discovery to presumed extinction. Unearthed Words Here are some poems about summer: The summer looks out from her brazen tower, Through the flashing bars of July. — Francis Thompson, English poet, A Corymbus for Autumn Leaving the house, I went out to see The frog, for example, in her satiny skin; and her eggs like a slippery veil; and her eyes with their golden rims; and the pond with its risen lilies; and its warmed shores and the long, windless afternoons; like a dropped cloud, taking one slow step then standing awhile then taking another, writing her own soft-footed poem through the still waters. — Mary Oliver, American poet, Summer Summer is come, for every spray now springs; The heart hath hung his old head on the pale; The buck in brake his winter coat he flings; The fishes flete with new repaired scale; The adder all her slough away she slings; The swift swallow pursueth the flies small; The busy bee her honey now she mings; Winter is worn that was the flowers' bale. And thus I see among these pleasant things Each care decays, and yet my sorrow springs. —Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, English poet and politician, Sonnet 7 Grow That Garden Library The Flower-Powered Garden by Andy Vernon This book came out in 2018, and the subtitle is Supercharge Your Borders and Containers with Bold, Colourful Plant Combinations. Today's Botanic Spark 1966 On this day, the New York Daily News shared the TV listing for 9 pm: it was a repeat episode of Bewitched starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York. In the episode, rare black Peruvian roses robbed Samantha of her witching powers and gave her little green square spots on her face. Aunt Clara remembers that the Peruvian black rose was used to drive witches out of Peru. She sends Darrin off to gather items for the antidote, and then she brewed them all together. She needed bat wings, porpoise milk, the eye of newt, and an ostrich feather. Luckily for Samantha, Aunt Clara said that she could only get Peruvian black rose sickness once.

In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Henry Howard, who interviewed us for his running blog a while black. This episode is a little different, as he is not fully plant-based. Henry has been researching the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle for a long time and is still working his way to becoming 100%. We thought it would be interesting for those who are not quite there yet as well to hear about what challenges he has and get some advice on how to address that. He also shares his Chrones, Celiac and running journey and how diet has played a factor in that. Henry Howard began his running journey in 2011 when he wanted to accomplish a bucket-list goal: finish a marathon. During his first run of 1.5 miles, he stopped three times, puked in the driveway and thought he was going to die. He did finish that marathon 18 months later, and since then has completed 20 marathons, qualified for and run the Boston Marathon, and finished eight ultra marathons. Along this journey, Henry has gone from a typical Western diet to a plant-based lifestyle that is somewhere between vegan and pescatarian but always gluten-free. Now at age 50, he has never been in better shape in his life, as he trains for his first 100-mile race this fall. At the same time, Henry has also become a certified running coach and trains athletes to meet their goals. He also writes about inspiring athletes, share his journey and reviews running gear at his website, RunSpirited.com. In this episode we discuss: Community Social media positive and negative Running, recovery and training Sons being diagnosed with celiac disease Plant-based journey Breaking down the challenges of going 100% Breakfast in hotels What foods work before and after your races Carb loading- yay or nay? His journey to “Boston” Getting ready for the 100 miler! How to get in more calories without eating SO much

James' Privy Council, in contrast to the Bedchamber, was made up of Elizabethan-era lords, but three men in particular dominated government and parliament. Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, and Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton. They didn't all like each other, but they worked together to try and steer the king and control parliament. In this podcast episode we bring you inspiring stories from this year’s Boston Marathon. Plus we will give you a run-down of the final results and soundbites from race weekend. And in the quick tip segment, Angie answers a question about what officially counts as a marathon or half marathon. The Boston Marathon 2019 2019 was the 123rd edition of the Boston Marathon. There are around 500,000 spectators who come out every year to cheer on the 30,000 plus runners. This provides a nearly 200 million dollar boost to the local economy. The Boston Marathon is hosted by the Boston Athletic Association which was established in 1887. In 1897 the BAA hosted a 24.5-mile road race for 15 participants (only 10 finished). In 1924 the course was lengthened to 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to the new Olympic standard. The BAA’s symbol is the unicorn and it still appears on today’s marathon medals. Official Boston colors are yellow and blue. Around 9,700 volunteers work the Boston Marathon each year. Most of the race is run outside of Boston. The course starts in Hopkinton and goes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline before entering Boston at mile 24. The BAA reserves around 3,000 spots (of 30,000) for its charity runners. Participants who ran on behalf of more than 260 non-profit organizations raised $36.6 million for charity at the 2018 Boston Marathon and figures will probably be similar this year. Heartbreak Hill, one of the most iconic features of the course, comes between miles 20-21 after the Newton Hills. Although it’s only a 91 feet climb the name started after the 1936 race when runner Johnny Kelley patted fellow runner Tarzan Brown on the back as he passed him. This spurred Tarzan Brown into action and he went on to win the race (thereby “breaking” Kelley’s heart near that hill). Marathon Monday The marathon wasn’t always on a Monday. Up until 1969 the race was always on April 19th, Patriot’s Day, a civic holiday commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution. In 1969 officials changed the race to always be the third Monday in April which is known as Marathon Monday. Boston Strong The mantra “Boston Strong” came about after two bombs exploded at the finish line in 2013 which killed two people and injured 260 others. The city of Boston responded by more than a million spectators coming out to support the 2014 race in which Meb Keflezhighi wrote the names of the victims on his bib and went on to win the race. (2) Qualifying Times It continues to get more challenging to get into Boston with a qualifying time. A total of 30,458 applications were received for qualifiers, a significant increase from recent years. 7,384 qualifiers were unable to be accepted due to field size limitations. Qualifiers who were four minutes, 52 seconds (4:52) or faster than the qualifying time for their age group and gender were accepted into the 2019 race. Qualifying standards will be five minutes faster for all age groups, starting with the 2020 Boston Marathon.2019 Winners Men The men’s pack stayed together until around mile 21 when Geoffrey Kirui dropped the pace from 5:06 to 4:31 and the lead pack dropped down to five. Then there was an exciting sprint finish down the length of Boylston St. for the third closest men’s race ever. 1st- Lawrence Cherono (Kenya) in 2:07:57 (he said,” I was so focused because I’ve never won a major marathon”), 2nd- Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) in 2:07:59 (who said that this was the first time he’s ever been outsprinted), 3rd- Kenneth Kipkemoi (Kenya) 2:08:07. The first American was Scott Fauble in seventh with 2:09:09 and Jared Ward, who finished eighth in 2:09:25 with a PR. Women: Worknish Degefa of Ethiopia took the lead around mile 4 and would go on to expand this lead to 3 minutes by mile 18. 1st- Worknish Degefa winning time was 2:23:31 2nd- Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, 2:24:13. 3rd-American Jordan Hasay posted a time of 2:25:20. Des Linden the defending champion finished 5th in 2:27:00 Men’s wheelchair: 1st- Daniel Romanchuk (USA) 1:21:36 2nd- Masazumi Soejima (Japan) 1:24:30 3rd- Marcel Hug (Switzerland) 1:26:42 Women’s wheelchair: 1st- Manuela Schar (Switzerland) 1:34:19 2nd- Tatyana McFadden (USA) 1:42:35 (at one point she tipped over in her wheelchair) 3rd- Madison de Rozario (Australia) 1:41:36Notable and Inspiring Finishers Joan Benoit Samuelson Joan Samuelson, age 61, finished in 3:04. She made history 40 years ago with a 2:35:15 Boston finish, enough to win Boston and break the course record. This year, to celebrate the 40th anniversary, she planned to run within 40 minutes of her record-breaking time. She did better and finished within 30 minutes of that goal. Gene Dykes Glen Dykes, age 71, broke his own age-group record, posting the fastest course time for a 70-to-74-year-old with a time of 2:58:50. This is after some pretty huge races earlier in the year like the Arches Ultra 50 Miler in Moab in late January, and then the 200-mile Delirious Western Endurance Scenic Trail race in Australia three weeks later. That one took him 101 hours to complete, including five encounters with venomous snakes. “At one point, I spotted a Tiger snake below me when I was in mid-stride,” he recalls. “I had to twist my body and throw myself into the underbrush to avoid it. But these ultra distance adventure runs are great fun, especially when they include sleep deprivation. You get flashbacks afterwards—the good kind.” (3) Stephen VanGampleareThe non-elite man who finished 1st is a Colorado engineer named Stephen VanGampleare who ran a massive PR of 2:18:40, the 26th fastest time of the day. He was initially disappointed by the BAA’s change which started Wave 1 two minutes after the elite men. He not only finished as the top amateur in the race, he also qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in the process. Adrianne Haslet Adrianne Haslet is a survivor who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon finish line bombings and had been training to run this year’s marathon. But she was struck by a car while in a crosswalk in January. Despite this tough new challenge she persevered in getting back to running, and ran the BAA 5K, her first race back. “I wanted to run this race so badly. I may have walked, but I never gave up.” (4) Ben Beach Ben Beach is one of the Boston Marathon Legacy runners and ran his first Boston Marathon at age 18 in 1968. He is now 69 and suffers from a rare neurological disorder that sends his lower leg extended sideways and nearly parallel to the ground with each stride. “I’ve made my peace with that. This is what running is like for me now.” His Boston personal best of 2:27:26 was set in 1981. He finished this year in just over 6 hours after dealing with cramping for more than half the race. “I feel good about the streak,” he said. “And I don’t want it to end. I’m struck by how adaptive human beings are. Runners know that the even slightest imbalance will almost guarantee an injury, but here I am, still bumbling along. The way my body has adjusted – it amazes me. I intend to be back in Hopkinton next April and to make up for this lackluster performance,” (5) Marko Cheseto Marko Cheseto is a double amputee who lost both his legs about six inches below the knee to frostbite in 2011. Originally from Kenya, he had come to study at the University of Alaska in Anchorage. In his senior year, deeply upset over the suicide of another UAA runner from Kenya, Cheseto overdosed on pills and disappeared into the woods around the UAA campus. He was the subject of a massive search and rescue operation. On the third day he stumbled into a hotel near the campus with his shoes frozen to his feet. After his recovery Cheseto remained in Anchorage, graduated with a degree in nutrition, got married, had three children, and has become an American citizen. Eighteen months after losing his feet, he resumed running once he was fitted with a pair of running blades. “One thing I just told myself was the condition that I have is just a phenomenon that happened in my life,” Cheseto said on Marathon Monday. “It does not define who I am. I still have my inner power.” He finished in 2:42 with a new PR. His goal is to run a sub-2:10 marathon. (6) Michael Herndon Michael Herndon, age 31, a Marine veteran from Ohio was the picture of determination. His legs locked up near mile 22 forcing the Afghanistan veteran to eventually get down on his hands and knees to crawl. He refused to give up, drawing inspiration from three fellow comrades who didn’t survive a bombing attack overseas. Herndon’s fellow Marines Matthew Ballard and Mark Juarez and British journalist Rupert Hamer died in 2010 from an improvised explosive device’s blast in Afghanistan. When his Achilles tendon starting giving him trouble on Monday and his legs gave out near the end of the race, Herndon chanted his fallen comrades’ names aloud to help himself focus on finishing. Once Herndon crossed the finish line, he was lifted into a wheelchair to receive medical attention. This was his first marathon which he finished in 3:38 and he’s determined that it won’t be his last. He said this about his inspiration, “They are not here anymore. I am here, and I am able. I am lucky to still have all my limbs. I can still be active. I find fuel in the simple idea that I can run. Some cannot.” (8) Dave McGillivray Boston race director Dave McGillivray has the tradition that each year after he completes his duties he runs the race himself. He’s run the Boston Marathon for 46 consecutive years (16 years as a regular runner and 30 years after the race as the race director) and this year he brought it up to 47 times (he’s run 157 marathons in total). This year’s marathon came just six months after triple bypass surgery. “I would definitely put it up there as the toughest one and the most challenging,” McGillivray said. “But it probably was the most special, given that I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.” The 64-year-old ran Boston this year for Team Big Heart and raised over $100,000 to create awareness about heart illness. “My mission now in life is to create an awareness that just because you’re fit, doesn’t mean you’re healthy, and that if you feel something, do something about it,” he said. “There were times in my life when I thought I was invincible, and I never thought they were warning pains. I just thought they were challenging pains. And now I realize there are warning pains out there, and you have to really recognize the difference and act on them. That’s what I did, and, as a result, I gave myself a second chance.”(9) Sources 1. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2017/04/14/why-a-world-record-set-in-the-boston-marathon-wouldnt-officially-count 2. www.mentalfloss.com/article/27483/11-fast-facts-about-boston-marathon 3. www.podiumrunner.com/gene-dykes-returns-to-the-marathon-distance-monday-in-boston_177008?fbclid=IwAR2Fw99Eid1w1cuxcqVY3-GTDYPHspaTso5nh2cZmEfXdVOcxRIsNMSgF54 4. www.runnersworld.com/news/g27054165/boston-marathon-celebrity-runners/ 5. www.bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/sports/bethesda-runner-extends-boston-marathon-streak/ 6. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2019/04/15/in-2011-marko-cheseto-lost-his-feet-to-frostbite-today-he-ran-the-boston-marathon-in-less-than-three-hours 7. www.runnersworld.com/news/a27045741/boston-marathon-results-mens-winner/?source=nl&utm_source=nl_rnw&utm_medium=email&date=041519&src=nl&utm_campaign=16093140&utm_term=AAA%20–%20High%20Minus%20Dormant%20and%2090%20Day%20Non%20Openers 8. www.boston.cbslocal.com/2019/04/15/boston-marathon-man-crawls-across-finish-line/?fbclid=IwAR1JJsU0pddsnpcOOvFxSnGpH546H59yyqBUKQWsqizmnae3hEJMzwGBdnI 9. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2019/04/16/after-heart-surgery-dave-mcgillivray-runs-2019-boston-marathon 10. www.marathonmaniacs.com/criteria-faq/ 11. www.100halfmarathonsclub.com/counting.html 12. www.baa.org/ Also Mentioned in This Episode Generation UCAN -the revolutionary new way for runners to fuel. Welcome back to The Daily Poem. Today's poem is a lovely passage from Henry Howard's sixteenth-century translation of the Aeneid. Remember: subscribe, rate, review! Help us spread the word! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Henry Howard is a great example of a success story. Henry is a journalist for the American Legion in the meeting/communications department. He writes everything from magazine articles, social media articles, website articles, and everything in between. He also does regular articles for the Marathon Training Academy. Henry had some amazing things to say and some of the bullet points of the things that have gotten him as far as he as are: 1. Write your goals down and visualize your success. 2. Include variety in your plan and have a few big goals on the horizon, but not too many big goals so as to avoid burnout and too much mental pressure. 3. Consistently move the "goal line" so you always have things to work toward, especially if you aren't always motivated by just getting up and running for the sake of running. 4. Don't sweat the small stuff. A bump in the road isn't going to dictate the endgame of your journey. Use the things that come up as lessons to find your way. 5. It's you against you. You can only control what you can do, so just do your best. Howard read by Classic Poetry Aloud: http://www.classicpoetryaloud.com/ Giving voice to the poetry of the past. --------------------------------------------------- The Means to attain Happy Life by Henry Howard (1516 – 1547) Martial, the things that do attain The happy life be these, I find:— The richesse left, not got with pain; The fruitful ground, the quiet mind; The equal friend; no grudge, no strife; No charge of rule, nor governance; Without disease, the healthful life; The household of continuance; The mean diet, no delicate fare; True wisdom join'd with simpleness; The night dischargèd of all care, Where wine the wit may not oppress. The faithful wife, without debate; Such sleeps as may beguile the night: Contented with thine own estate Ne wish for death, ne fear his might. Alternative wording, in modern English: My friend, the things that do attain The happy life be these, I find: The riches left, not got with pain; The fruitful ground; the quiet mind; The equal friend; no grudge; no strife; No charge of rule, nor governance; Without disease, the healthy life; The household of continuance; The mean diet, no dainty fare; Wisdom joined with simpleness; The night discharged of all care, Where wine the wit may not oppress: The faithful wife, without debate; Such sleeps as may beguile the night; Content thyself with thine estate, Neither wish death, nor fear his might.
