Jeff has been employed at Ballarat for so long that he remembers quite vividly just what is was like maintaining the old golf course prior to the redevelopment. The redevelopment of the golf course brought with it numerous challenges that Jeff walks us through and we hear the story in a very frank, honest, and sometimes laughable way.Included in Jeff's long career at Ballarat GC, we hear about the climatic challenges of trying to maintain both cool and warm season turf grasses at this unique site. Acts 21 & 22 As we continue to follow Paul on his missionary journeys, we find him constantly seeking God's will for direction. Although he had troublesome times along the way, he found the Holy Spirit was always with him. As we seek to do God's will, we must commit to following Him, pushing aside all distractions, and making Jesus the head of all facets of our life. We can know His will as we use Christ as an example, follow the teaching of God's Word, and follow the Spirit's leading. James 1:2-4 This mini-series begins with "Conquering the Desert". We consider how the Israelites handled their time in the desert, on the way to the Promised Land, and how we should handle the deserts in our lives. They followed God as He led them and provided for them. Good things can still happen during the desert, when we led God do His thing. We need to learn from our desert experiences, and guard against a "wilderness mentality". The joy of the Lord can be our strength. The father gave the son freedom to choose his life's direction, yet continued to watch for his return. When he returned, he was welcomed with open arms. So it is between us and our Heavenly Father. This week’s episode is a little peek into the day to day picks I make to get through my day. A few old favorites (ok, quite a few), some fantastic discoveries at the used record store, and some fabulous new vinyl reissues. The main highlight this week is the brand new reissue of Twin/Tone’s Big Hits of Mid-America, Vol. 3. Long out of print, Back Groove Records has just put out a limited edition set remastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery  Room Mastering, Milwaukee, WI with vinyl mastering by Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl, Memphis, TN. This is one of the great landmarks of late 70s Minneapolis underground rock. As for this week’s edition of the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, I’ve got a recent discovery by The Main Grains. Led by former Wildheart bassist Danny McCormack, the track can be found on their Don’t Believe Everything You Think EP. Like I do every week, however, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me! For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Pornsak Pichetshote wrote the story with art by Alexandre Tefenkgi. Additional contributions as follows, ya mug: color by Lee Loughridge and lettering & design by Jeff Powell. Historical consultation by Grant Din.Set in 1936, Eddy Hark is a Chinese-American cop. Actually, he's the first Chinese-American cop in the country. Eddy returns to San Francisco at the request of the wealthy Carroway family. He's in town investigating the disappearance of a young woman employed by the family. The Carroways and Eddy Hark have a difficult relationship. His mother was their servant and they took him in after she was murdered. Eddy's disliked by his fellow police and not trusted by the Asian-American community he serves. But no one hates Eddy as much he does for being a pawn in America's anti-Chinese policies of the early 20th Century.Aubrey, Dennis, and Johnny begin things by looking back at their histories with noir and mystery novels. Next, they learn about Chang Apana, the real-life inspiration for Eddy (and Charlie Chan). Finally, they delve into the author's mix of real-world events like the Chinese Exclusion Act in The Good Asian. Additional topics include Eddy's self-loathing; the language of the times the book takes place in; noir tropes; and if America will ever stop “othering” people. Last of all, but not certainly not least, they look at the storytelling and art of The Good Asian. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Policing and the model minoirty myth are deconstructed through a noir genre lens in this hardboiled detective series created by today's guests, sak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgi.  A new Image Comics series, The Good Asian stars detective Edison Hark—a haunted Chinese-American detective—on the trail of a killer in 1936 San Francisco's Chinatown. The series explores Chinese American identity, US immigration policy and the brutal contradictions inherent in being the first Chinese American cop when the target of his policing is inevitably his own community. It's also a beautifully drawn piece of historical fiction and an exciting mystery. My guests are: sak Pichetshote is a writer for comics and TV. He wrote the critically acclaimed horror comic hit INFIDEL that was featured on NPR's best horror stories of all time. In TV, he's written for the shows Marvel's Cloak & Dagger, Light as a Feather, and Two Sentence Horror Stories.  Alexandre Tefenkgi is the acclaimed artist of European comics and graphic albums as well as the critically acclaimed Skybound book Outpost Zero by Sean McKeever. Born in Africa and raised in France, he's an artist of Vietnamese descent.  The series' colorist is Lee Loughridge and letterer is Jeff Powell. Christopher welcomes returning guest Pornsak Pichetshote, the award-winning author of the Infidel (Image Comics).  Pornsak's sophomore comic effort The Good Asian is a nine-part series being published through Image Comics.  The creative team consists of Alexander Tefenkgi on interior art, color by Lee Loughridge and lettering by Jeff Powell.  The first issue goes on sale May 5th.  The Good Asian is an noir mystery set in 1936 Chinatown featuring Edison Hark a Chinese-American detective from Hawaii and the first generation of Chinese Americans to come of age under an immigration ban.  We discuss the real life influence behind the character Edison Hark, Hawaiian Detective Chang Apana who influenced the silver screen portrayal of Charlie Chan. Today, Charlie Chan movies are considered racist because of its use of Asians sterotypes.  I ask Pornsake about the current cancel culture and its impact on books and movies.  Should Charlie Chan movies, or any racist material, be erased from history? Pornsake has taken great care to get the historical details of the period correct working with historical consultant Grant Din. We discuss the historical background of the story including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, processing of Chinese immigrants through San Francisco's Angel Island and the formation of Paper Sons.    As we conclude our interview, I ask Pornsake about his guilty pleasure, a missed opportunity and when he took a risk.    Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" from LoopsLab  Creator Talks logo by The Design Punk   Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts About the Author More about The Good Asian

Before Tennessee began its historic 1985 championship season, it was loaded with quality running backs.  Keith Davis, Charles Wilson, Pete Panuska, William Howard and Big Sam Henderson were just some of the veteran backs who would be counted on.  Nowhere in the preseason media guide was there any mention of a walk-on named Jeff Powell.  In spite of his low profile Jeff Powell would go on to be remembered for one of the all time great runs in Tennessee football history when he came "roaring down the greensward of the super dome" in the 1986 Sugar Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes.  This episode tells Jeff's fascinating story with interviews by him, his coach Doug Mathews, with archival sound from John Ward and Johnny Majors.

In the pantheon of 90's alternative-rock, you could say Boston trio Morphine were one of the most alternative. Leader Mark Sandman's seductive vocals and two-string slide bass, partnered with only baritone saxophone and drums, created a sound Sandman himself dubbed as "low rock" but almost 30 years after the band's inception, their fans as well as newcomers still struggle to put Morphine's uniqueness into words. Since Sandman's tragic death in 1999, saxophonist Dana Colley (along with surviving members of Morphine and other collaborators) has kept that distinct sound alive through Orchestra Morphine and currently Vapors Of Morphine, as well as an upcoming limited LP release from Warner Music Group imprint Run Out Groove of Morphine's 1997 set at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, cut to vinyl by Jeff Powell at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording. On today's show, Colley discusses his fascination with liner notes and how vinyl records act as an archive for a moment in time, while Run Out Groove's Matt Block visits to talk about the label's fan-driven voting process, why a Morphine live show was chosen over studio albums that have yet to see vinyl pressings and how quality digital recordings have as much of a right to exist in the vinyl market as analog. Visit RunOutGrooveVinyl.com to find a store near you that will carry Morphine's Live At The Warfield 1997 next month, and check out VaporsOfMorphine.com for news and tour dates.
