The 2024 finals series began with a pulsating weekend of Semi-Final action across the NPL and FQPL1 competion and the focus now shifts to Grand Final day next Sautrday at Suncorp Stadium. GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE lovingly recounts the journey of Cymande, a group of Black British musicians who all came to the U.K. from the Caribbean as children, released three brilliant albums in quick succession in the early 1970s and were embraced in the USA. But in the U.K., they faced a music business beset by prejudice against homegrown Black talent and were largely ignored. They originally split in 1975, but their music lived on, as successive generations of artists and fans found and embraced their songs. Hip Hop, House, Drum and Bass, R&B, Rare Groove, and crate-digging communities all saw something in the songs of Cymande that inspired them. Through insightful interviews with band members and influential figures including Mark Ronson, Laura Lee and Mark Speer (Khruangbin), DJ Maseo (De La Soul), Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Cut Chemist, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Louie Vega, and Kool DJ Red Alert, this stranger than fiction documentary explores the band's profound impact and enduring legacy. Director Tim MacKenzie-Smith stops by to talk about his own introduction to the music of Cymande, designing the look and feel of the film to seen as a big screen communal experience, how the band members kept each others hope, music and spirit alive over the years, and the joy of seeing the band and their music get the recognition it deserves. Soccer makes its return to Finley Stadium and kicks off action in an exhibition match on August 5. The season opens on the road on August 17 at SEC foe Vanderbilt and the Mocs home opener is August 31 against Austin Peay. McKinney, a two-time SoCon Coach of the Year (2020 [21], 2022) begins his ninth season at the helm. He returns All-Conference first teamer and captain Mackenzie Smith, second team members Caroline Ekern, Clarissa Salinas and Birna Johannsdottir. Ekern and Salinas were joined on the All-Freshman team by Zoey Mize and Carolina Richvalsky who earned a spot on the SoCon All-Tournament Team. Volleyball turns its attention to August 25-26 as the team prepares for their season-opening tournament in Atlanta. Before that, fans have a pair of opportunities to catch the Mocs at Maclellan Gymnasium at the annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage (August 17) and the team's exhibition against Tennessee Tech (August 22). Torbett is entering her second year at the helm of Chattanooga's indoor volleyball team, coming off of a season in 2022 in which the Mocs finished 17-16 and reached the SoCon Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016. Torbett's 17 wins marked the most for a UTC head coach in their first season. Mark Davies interviews Tim Mackenzie-Smith (director/producer) about his documentary GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE which is featured as part of the 19th edition of the Calgary Underground FIlm Festival 2022. Cymande are the unsung heroes of hip hop, disco and a host of other genres, whose message of peace, love and funk sailed beyond Britain's shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing, the music played on, so they returned to play some more.In the racially turbulent UK of the early ‘70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story. Disgraced retired businessman Ron Brierley has been sentenced to 14 months in prison with a seven-month non-parole period. The 84-year-old appeared in a Sydney court today, having pleaded guilty in April to three charges of possessing child sex abuse material. Our reporter Mackenzie Smith joins me now from Sydney.

New Zealanders stuck in India are desperate for help as the country experiences a devastating second wave of Covid-19 cases. India reported nearly 350,000 daily cases on Sunday, and more than 2,700 deaths, with overcrowded hospitals running low on supplies. RNZ can reveal the government approved the export of military hardware to the United Arab Emirates, a key partner in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen, in 2018 and 2019. It included targeting systems for mortars, and suppressors - which reduce the recoil and noise from guns. Experts say the information heightens concerns that New Zealand may have contributed to war crimes in Yemen. It comes as the Foreign Ministry is reviewing its export controls regime to ensure it's fit for purpose. Mackenzie Smith reports.
Auckland businesses are crying out for a return to normality, as the city enters its week under Alert Level 2 restrictions. The rest of the country has been at Alert Level 1 since Thursday, and the government will decide today whether Auckland will remain at Level 2. Mackenzie Smith reports.
RNZ can reveal New Zealand's foreign affairs ministry granted export permits for military equipment sent to Saudi Arabia's forces in 2016 and 2018. It comes amid a government review into export controls following revelations Air New Zealand's gas turbines' unit did repair work for the Saudi Navy. The Green Party says the export permits could make the government liable for war crimes, and they want regulations to be tightened up. Mackenzie Smith reports. [audio_play] In a statement foreign affairs minister Nanaia Mahuta said: "This export control case precedes my time as Foreign Minister and indeed was initially approved in 2016 under the previous Government. "We made it clear this week we consider it unacceptable for entities connected to the New Zealand Government to be exporting military equipment to Saudi Arabia. "This week the Government asked MFAT for further information about how it handles applications for military exports to Saudi Arabia to ensure New Zealand's approach to export controls is fit for purpose."
A professor of international law says foreign ministry officials may have breached their human rights obligations when they granted permits for weapons exports to Saudi Arabia. Documents obtained by RNZ show a New Zealand exporter sent military training equipment, computers, radios and binoculars to Saudi forces in 2016 and 2018. Waikato Unviersity's Al Gillespie told reporter Mackenzie Smith it's a bad look for New Zealand.

An indigenous studies professor says what happened at Waikeria prison shows the ineffectiveness of the government's reform strategy, Hokai Rangi. Hokai Rangi aims to cut the number of Maori in prison from 52 percent down to 16 - in line with the overall Maori population. The initial five-year goal is to reduce that number by 10 percent. Auckland University's Tracey McIntosh told RNZ's Mackenzie Smith that Hokai Rangi alone can never achieve those targets. After the standoff ended, Corrections minister Kelvin Davis said the Government has committed $98 million to work with whanau, hapu and iwi to reduce Maori re-offending rates alongside launching Hokai Rangi.

Organisers of the Black Lives Matter protests in New Zealand are calling on the government to condemn police violence in the US, and disarm the police in New Zealand. They say New Zealand isn't exempt from the structural racism that's ignited demonstrations in the United States. Thousands protested in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin yesterday, as anger over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police continues. Mackenzie Smith was at the Auckland protest, and filed this report.
New Zealand is now at Covid-19 Alert Level 1. Social, travel and work restrictions were lifted at midnight. The government wants workers to return to the central city to help keep local businesses stay afloat. RNZ reporter Mackenzie Smith is at Britomart in Auckland.
America's Cup teams could be next off the block in visa exemptions being rolled out by the government. Although the borders remain largely closed, Immigration New Zealand is fielding thousands of requests for special exemption access. One of them is the UK's America's Cup team, which is due to start preliminary races in Auckland in December. The team's skipper, Sir Ben Ainslie, told our reporter Mackenzie Smith how the team is holding up.

A new unemployment benefit for people who lost work because of Covid-19 is being criticised as unfair and discriminatory. The new payment, announced yesterday, will give up to $490 a week to people who have lost their jobs in recent weeks. The existing jobseeker benefit for people over 25 is currently set at a maximum of $250 after tax. Mackenzie Smith reports.
Aunt Becky, aka Lori Laughlin, and her husband whoever, pled guilty in the college admissions scandal. Under terms of the agreement, Lori will spend 2 months in jail, pay a 150,000 fine, and agree that all future bribes to colleges will be done the normal way – paying the university directly to put their name on the side of a building.What? Do you really think George W. Bush got into Yale because of his SATs?Also, Michael Cohen has been released from prison and is allowed to spend the duration of his prison term in his NY apartment. No word yet if this should be viewed as punishment or reward. Being from the Midwest, being cooped up in a NY apartment is not my idea of a good time. But apparently, he was released because of the cornovirus. According to the news report, Cohen is 53, in great health, and so is in a high risk category. I am assuming sarcasm should be read into this report.It's time for … our Darwinian awards. I am assuming you all are familiar with the Darwinian Awards Concept. Charles Darwin devised this theory roughly called, "survival of the fittest." Natural selection. The idea is that over time, the strong will survive, the weak get eliminated. Apparently, Darwin would not be allowed into schools today as I am not sure "participation trophies" fit too well within this theory. The dodo bird can't re-emerge because it tried real hard.But if this theory were applied to the legal profession, we have some awards to give out to those who will soon be departing. Yes, the weakest among us. Consider it, your participation trophy. Those lawyers who have demonstrated by their utter lack of legal acumen and common sense, that their days in the legal profession will soon be coming to an end.So I accumulated well over 100 stories of lawyers deserving to be considered for these awards. And we cover many of these stories in my class.But today, I want us to cover the top 3. So I have come up with my top 3. And Mackenzie, has her top 3. We have not compared notes. So let's see how we compare. A passenger on a flight from Auckland to Christchurch last Thursday says the lack of spare seats was an unwelcome surprise. William Howard was travelling south on an Air New Zealand flight to visit a friend in Christchurch, but he says every row he could see was taken up, and no passengers were able to distance from each other. On the airline's website, it says they will be allocating seating to allow an empty seat between customers travelling alone, although families will be able to stay together. A picture taken by Mr Howard shows that the allocated free space in his row had been taken up by a person. He spoke with reporter Mackenzie Smith about the flight.

An update on our story from earlier in the week about an unapproved police trial of new technology using controversial facial recognition software. It was used to conduct dozens of searches for people in New Zealand. This week, RNZ revealed the police didn't have any of the necessary clearance from their bosses or the government to test American software Clearview AI. Mackenzie Smith has more details.
RNZ has learned that police conducted a trial of a controversial facial recognition software without telling their new boss or talking to the Privacy Commissioner. American software firm Clearview AI is used by hundreds of police departments in the United States. It's effectively a search engine for faces - billing itself as a crime-fighting tool to identify both criminals and victims. Mackenzie Smith has the story.

Well l can't believe this! I thought after season two, that was going to be the end of the League of Extraordinary Introverts podcast, but here it is. Over the past six months, so many people have asked me if I'm bringing the podcast back and I didn't think I would, but things change, hey? And here it is. Someone also asked why I've never shared MY story on the podcast after so many episodes of asking other amazing introverts about their work, I decided that Season 3, Episode 1 would be my one and only solo ep. It's weird talking to yourself and not getting to hide behind asking the questions, but I hope that you find it helpful.
