The Jen Marples Show episode 187 is here!Ready to strip away the clutter and create a life that actually feels good? This week I'm thrilled to welcome back one of our most popular guests ever, Shira Gill – organizing expert, bestselling author, and total badass who's helping women cut through the BS and design lives they love. Her new book "LifeStyled" takes her minimalist philosophy beyond just organizing our closets (though she's brilliant at that too) and applies it to every area of our overwhelmed lives.Shira drops some serious wisdom about breaking free from burnout by being "radically intentional" with our time, energy and commitments. She shares game-changing strategies like the index card system for focusing on what truly matters, how to create a minimalist boutique hotel vibe in your bedroom (yes please!), and why it's perfectly okay to say "hell no" to cooking dinner or sending holiday cards if that's not your thing. As midlife women, we're done with doing all the things half-assed – it's time to do less, BETTER!. Whether you're feeling stretched too thin, craving more calm in your life, or just ready to stop shoulding all over yourself, this episode is your permission slip to let go of what's not serving you. Shira Gill is a globally recognized home organizing expert and bestselling author with a minimalist philosophy. She has inspired thousands of people to clear clutter from their homes and lives, and developed a process and toolkit that applies to anyone, regardless of budget, space, or lifestyle. Shira and I discuss:How to create more intentionality in all areas of life, beyond just the home.Pausing and conducting a "life audit" to evaluate priorities.Practical tips for reducing burnout and decision fatigue.Embracing the freedom and liberation that comes saying no.Only focusing on one or two big goals per year. The transformative power of creating a visually pleasing, clutter-free environment.Giving yourself permission to be "bad" at certain tasks.Shira Says: You're Not Too F***ing Old! to Travel the World Alone!Learn more about Jen Marples at https://www.jenmarples.comWant to work with Jen? Captain Bill Pinkney is on the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate his inspiring book Sailing Commitment. Captain Bill is one of less than 100 people, and the first Black man, who have circumnavigated the World in a sailboat. And he did the hard way, traveling around the treacherous Cape Horn. Captain Bill tells us of his adventure, what inspired it, how he found the courage, and funding, to undertake such a journey. He also tells us of spending 65 days sailing in the Pacific from South America to South Africa, seeing nothing but ocean, sky and an occasional bird. He explains that it was reading that helped him survive that incredibly lonely stretch. The first section of Chapter 7 in Alain Colas' 'Around the World Alone' a text that has always been closed to me ( I do not speak French) until I found this English translation published by Barron Education Press in 1978. Alain Colas was lost at sea in 1978 denying the world the opportunity to learn more from this erudite, eloquent and deeply passionate sailor. As many of you will know, this subject is very close to my heart as I have raced solo along the route that Alain takes in this book. I found Alain's writing to be so thoughtful, insightful and passionate that there were many times during this reading, that I simply had to stop, take off my headphones and stand looking out of the window, watching salty-eyed as my own 'Bird of Passage' swung impatiently at her mooring. #352. Robin Lee Graham made history when he left California in 1965, at the age of sixteen, to sail around the world alone on Dove. He met his wife Patti on this epic journey, which he completed in 1970. The voyage was followed by a flurry of media and a difficult return to life ashore. The Graham's moved to Montana soon after the circumnavigation, where they built a life with their two kids, Quimby and Ben. Robin and Patti still live on Flathead Lake, where their close-knit family gathers often. Robin wrote three books with the help of Derek Gill: Dove, The Boy Who Sailed Around the World Alone, and Home is the Sailor. Dove was adapted into a Hollywood movie in 1974. Emma's mother, Lynn, sailed across the Atlantic in 1978, when she was twelve years old. Lynn had the first edition of The Boy Who Sailed Around the World Alone on the shelf beside her bunk, and spent their 26 day passage from Maine to Ireland flipping through its pages. Emma grew up with that same copy on her shelf, which sparked her trajectory towards sailing. In February 2022, 50 years after Robin's circumnavigation, Emma traveled up to Montana to interview Robin in person, in the house he built on Flathead Lake. The two sailors talked about Robin's early sailing days, his relationship with his father, his faith, and how he and Patti have built their life. -- Join the conversation on The Quarterdeck, 59º North's 'deep dives on the art of seamanship.' This week we talk with Jordan Noel and Hudson Phillips, the team behind “This World Alone” which was just released this week on digital On Demand. We talk with them about how the film was made and much more. “This World Alone” is a post-apocalyptic drama / thriller about three women attempting to survive after a cataclysmic event leaves the Earth without technology or power. Travel Enthusiast and Accidental Entrepreneur, Cole Banks started Sisters Traveling Solo as a Facebook group. It was her response to an internet debate that discouraged Black women, particularly, from traveling the world unaccompanied. In this episode, Cole talks about the overnight success of that Facebook group. She had to quit a good job (that she enjoyed) unexpectantly when she went from hosting five trips in one year to putting together a team that organized twenty before the year ended. Cole shares that Sisters Traveling Solo is now much more than a Facebook group and successful business. It is a platform for Black women to share their joy exploring the world on their own and to build community for when they want to be in Peru with twenty other Black women in addition to sightseeing in Spain alone. She says that the fear family and friends often project onto single women when they get wanderlust is not allowed in the Facebook group that now boasts 70,000 members. She and her team have worked hard to create a space where statements like, “I am afraid to go here” don’t pop up in threads. Instead, the group has an abundance of “I took my first solo trip and I loved it!” posts that garner hundreds of support responses and impromptu trips among the members. In addition to sharing how much joy she gets from watching total strangers become best friends over the course of a week-long trip, Cole is honest about the amount of time and work she has to do to make sure her customers never see or feel how much has gone into their seamless trips. She talks about the realities of having this new good job (that she enjoys) in which she is “on vacation” more times than she is at home. While she is filled with gratitude for how well her business is doing, she admits she’s trying to find balance between organizing others’ memorable vacations and having enough free time to go on her own, even if it’s just to relax without a phone or laptop for a few days. All in all, she is content with her choice to leave her cushy job. “I don’t ever forget I have the life many people dream of,” Cole states. “I set my own schedule and make my own rules. I am always having a new experience in a different part of the world. I know that is no small thing.” It is also no small thing that she has turned this dream job into a million-dollar company in only three years.

Daniel Johnston bookends today's show with in-between bits courtesy of Benjamin Clementine, Trampled by Turtles and even Slash among others. Plus we uncover the sampled track featured in a stadium-filling indie classic, by accident. Track Listing True Love Will Find You In the End Daniel JohnstonLondon Benjamin ClementineAlone Trampled by TurtlesIn The Meantime SpacehogTelephone and Rubber Band Penguin Café OrchestraProof I am KlootStarlight Slash and Myles KennedySpace Ducks Theme Song Daniel Johnston Hi, How Are You? Daniel Johnston bookends our show today. A singer-songwriter widely regarded as a significant figure in alternative music scenes. Much of Daniel Johnston's catalogue is home recorded and often cited as being "childlike". In the show, Richard talks of his personal experiences with family members and Daniel but sadly this episode in his life has long since been over. We discussed in the show that Kurt Cobain wore a t-shirt with artwork from Daniel's Yip/Jump Music album. This is actually incorrect. Kurt wore a t-shirt depicting artwork from Johnston's Hi, How Are You? LP but cited Yip/Jump Music as one of his favourite records of 1993. This proved to be a hell of a recommendation. Hence there ensued a bidding war between record labels to sign him. Despite Daniel being resident in a mental hospital at that time. Plagued by mental health issues He has suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder all his life. Daniel had a psychotic episode after appearing at a music festival in 1990 whilst being flown back to West Virginia by his father Bill (a former USAF pilot) in his 2 seater plane. He believed he was Casper the Friendly Ghost and removed the keys from the plane's ignition and threw them outside. Miraculously Bill managed to crash land the plane in a densely wooded area. Both sustained only minor injuries. The incident completely destroyed the plane. Daniel Johnston was involuntarily admitted to mental hospital again after the incident. Further, in his career, Daniel was the subject of a Sundance Film Festival Director's Award winning film (2005) The Devil and Daniel Johnston. The highly praised film collates much of Daniel's vast output. It proved to inspire more interest in Daniel's work. In 2012 he published his comic book Space Ducks - An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness which apparently has a linked iOs app which we have been spectacularly unable to find. Daniel retired from performing live in 2017. Apple used his song The Story of an Artist in a TV commercial in 2018. Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine What a rich story for such a young man. As Tobin mentioned in the show, Benjamin was homeless in Paris by the time he was leaving his teens. As a result of performing music on the streets he became something of a cult figure in the Parisian music scene. He composed and wrote during the day and performed in the evening. Because of this, he managed to stay out of trouble. He was eventually spotted by an agent and a meeting was set up for the following day. Before signing a major deal, Clementine was working with a French tour agent and the independent label set up through Lionel Bensemoun (a French business mogul) which enabled Clementine to record his music. He was booked for some major festivals, the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Eurosonic Festival, the latter of which he was billed as one of the highlights. As a result of these performances, Clementine was billed for the 2013 North Sea Jazz Festival but failed to turn up. He was thrown off a train for failing to have a valid ticket, something he attributed to not being paid by his agent. Penniless he began the 45km walk to Rotterdam to perform, which eventually took him 10 hours, thus missing his stage appearance. He arrived at his destination with bare feet and bleeding toes. Regardless of this setback, he received an invite to play at the festival in 2015.
Now all these people say that people can't destroy the world. That is preposterous because people in power are leaders to people in general. People believe that people in power can help the world, but really they are only a minor convenience of justice. We need real justice for the people, meaning nothing inhumane should be legal. The law system accpets certain things in life because the "people" voted for it or they felt like passing the law themselves. Empathy is key to helping the world and the problems that it comes with. Problems are natural, its up to you to prepare yourself, so you can be ready in action in any situation, with no sense of panic. To become a leader you will first need to learn how to let go of your fear of opposition.

“I never knew if I was going to make it but I just wanted to know. I wanted to set out.” - Laura Dekker Today’s guest did something that no other person her age has ever done before. At age 14, Laura Dekker set out to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the planet singlehandedly. And at 16, she completed that journey by sailboat. And while it’s an understatement to call that world record amazing, what I love most about it is that she took her time to complete it — exposing herself to the world, meeting people and finding stories waiting for her, one port at at time. She’s the subject of the documentary film, Maidentrip, given a TEDx Talk in Auckland, and the author of a new book called One Girl, One Dream — an autobiographical account of her epic adventure. In this episode, we explore Laura’s journey and the person she’s become today. A Quick Preview: How Laura's early years spent sailing helped her to see life as a series of challenges. What happens to time when you're alone at sea for weeks. Why Laura took 2 years to complete the circumnavigation, which could be done in 7 months. Ok. So you know I traveled around the world for three years alone—on a motorcycle. And I really didn't see everything. There are still plenty of places waiting for my visit. Or at least I'd like to think so. Truth is, there are a lot of places I'm waiting to visit. But that's besides the point. I was in Ethiopia on my motorcycle sometimes in the Spring of 2008. On a desolate stretch of a dusty dirt road between Gondar, Ethiopia and the Sudan border, I ran into to bicyclists from Finland. Though our meeting was short, our time was rich. Sometimes connections are made in seconds, sometimes connections take years to be real. Jukka, then a 30 year old bicyclist with nearly 2 years traveling experience around the world, and I connected. Three years later he finally makes it to the United States and takes me up on my lifelong offer to put him up and share time here in Southern California. In August he and another world-riding Finnish bicyclist planeed to rendezvous in Southern California: here in Encinitas at my cottage by the ocean. Our time was rich again. And we shared stories, photos and great food and conversation. Before these two legends returned to their bicycling journey, I pulled them asisde in my studio for a one-of-a-kind podcast. In this hour-plus long interview I ask the hard questions. And I'm surprised, yet comforted by their answers. Take the time to listen to Jukka and Lukas discuss traveling, motivation, being away from home and loneliness. I think the insight is inspirational. iTunes Music Store Check out their websites for further inspiration, too! Jukka: jukkasalminen.com Lukas: safebiking.wordpress.com 01:23:10
