Today's special topic cuts deeper than science or partisan politics---it defends North American duck hunting's essential back bone, wetland health and abundance, continued public land access, and our legacy to future duck hunting generations. Right now, powerful forces are dismantling the foundations of North America's greatest success story--waterfowl hunting as you've known it your entire life. Most have scarcely even noticed. Decades of data and research, the programs and staff that keep ducks overhead and seasons open--all are all on the chopping block. If you've ever watched sunrise from the duck blind, heard thundering wings overhead, or taught your children the meaning of this cherished tradition--this fight belongs to you. Me. All waterfowlers. Silence is complicity. Read the links below. And act now. This is your chance to make a real difference. If not you, who? Legislative recaps are upon us--the time politicians tell us what they did in Cheyenne. The story they tell us is often very different than the truth. Recently, senators told Wyofile that funding measures were not crammed into other bills. But is that entirely true?
The Wyoming Legislature has passed the halfway point in its 40-day general session. To mark the occasion, three WyoFile and three Wyoming Public Radio reporters share moments that feel emblematic of the attitudes and energy of the session so far.
Lawmakers are in the midst of deciding how much the state should spend on programs that impact people's lives across Wyoming — from wildfire recovery to energy projects to support for vulnerable children. WyoFile and Wyoming Public Radio compare what the governor recommended against what lawmakers cut, and where things go from here.
Mike Koshmrl has been an environmental reporter and journalist for over a decade. He previously worked with Jackson Hole News & Guide and currently writes for WyoFile, reporting on environmental, conservation and natural issues concerning the state of Wyoming. Amanda Eggert has been an environmental reporter with Montana Free Press since 2021. She has also written for other publications including Explore Big Sky, Explore Yellowstone & Mountain Outlaw. Both shared their experiences in writing this combined piece, The Year of the Wolves documenting the first steps to wolves being reintroduced to the Northern Rockies. With its newfound power, the Wyoming Freedom Caucus set out to pass its top five priorities within the first 10 days of the 2025 legislative session. The group says it hit the mark within eight days. WyoFile and Wyoming Public Radio break down what the caucus pushed through the House and how a couple of those bills veered away from the Freedom Caucus' original aims.
In March, hunter Cody Roberts ran over a gray wolf with his snowmobile and brought the animal into a bar in Daniel - about an hour south of Jackson. He was fined $250 by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for “possession of a live animal.” In April, KHOL reporter Dante Filpula Ankney sat down with KHOL's Emily Cohen, who first reported the story, and Wyofile reporter Mike Koshmrl to talk about the role of wolves in Wyoming.

Lots of good Wyofile reporting discussed on this episode, check them out here. You can hear Matt and Jason discuss the "special" legislative session in November right here.
This week Wyofile published a hit piece on Dr. Taylor Haynes, Chairman Frank Eathorne, Boone Tidwell and Ken Pendergraft about their one-time membership in Oath Keepers. It's propaganda. In this episode we discuss, with the people mentioned in piece, how it's the furthest thing from the truth. Also, Nancy Case is at it again in a hilarious new way. This is a great episode, enjoy!
I predicted a twisted story, and Wyofile didn't dissappoint. Boone Tidwell, Frank Eathorne, Ken Pendergraft and Taylor Haynes were "outed" as Oath Keepers. Here's our response.

“Truly Wyoming's loss” and “We are in your debt” were just some of the comments posted on Twitter last week in response to the news that Nick Reynolds is leaving the Cowboy State. Reynolds has reported on Wyoming politics for the past three years, first for the Casper Star-Tribune and then WyoFile, and he was often one of the only reporters at the Wyoming State Legislature. KHOL News Director Kyle Mackie interviewed Reynolds about the difficulty of making a living in local news in Wyoming and his new role in South Carolina.

Appalachia and Wyoming are dramatically different places, but they also offer each other cautionary tales, success stories, and reasons for resilience and hope. Last year, the Energy News Network and WyoFile captured this complex story in a six-part investigative series, Reckoning in Coal County, now available as an ebook or paperback. Fresh Energy, Energy News Network, and WyoFile hosted this virtual panel discussion on April 22, 2021. Throughout the conversation, we explore the cultural, political, and economic obstacles faced by rural communities hoping to survive and thrive in a world without coal. Lauren sits down with Karlee Provenza, a doctoral candidate at the University of Wyoming, community organizer, and newly elected State House Representative, to discuss issues in the criminal justice system at the local and national levels. Specifically, Karlee talks about how civilians can organize at the local level to demand criminal justice reform from their representatives in government. One particular reform discussed is a Civilian Oversight Board of police. The overarching theme in demanding reform is transparency and accountability on the part of law enforcement and government officials. We all must act together to ensure the change we need happens. No Label Roundtable teamed up with WyoFile to bring you this relevant and thought-provoking episode. WyoFile is an independent nonprofit news organization that has built its extensive readership through diligent, in-depth reporting on Wyoming's people, places, and policy. We had the privilege of speaking with WyoFile's Editor in Chief Dustin Bleizeffer of Casper, and with freelance journalist Matthew Copeland of Lander. Mr. Copeland has been reporting on a five part series for WyoFile called Generation of Hope, in which he shines a bright light on the healthcare system of the Wind River Indian Reservation and its encompassing myriad of social and cultural challenges. This eye-opening series breathes humanity into a picture that many of us forget is in our own back yard, and it may change your outlook on our Native American neighbors. We sat down with the gentlemen from WyoFile to discuss the impetus, the challenges, and Mr. Copeland’s own personal experiences in covering this important issue. Link to read series.
