On today's Daily Detroit: First we do a little "Where we've been" talking about a new coffee shop in Hazel Park and Devon's potty training technique. Then, tariff talk. It was announced Wednesday that there will be a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles to the US, with a tariff on parts coming May 3. The idea of getting more manufacturing in the US has merit, but the way it's being done? Probably will quickly rise prices on vehicles that already feel expensive to many Americans. We discuss. It's been a busy week up at the 2024 Mackinac Policy Conference, put on by the Detroit Regional Chamber. But what are some of the things happening that could impact you? State Representative Mike McFall of the 8th District stopped by and talked about what's moving through Landing and made the Governor's proposed budget. We'll dive into the latest policy discussions and legislative efforts impacting Metro Detroit and beyond. In this episode, we cover: Redistricting Changes: Representative McFall discusses the recent redistricting that will see him campaigning for House District 14, which includes parts of Madison Heights, Hazel Park, and Warren. Learn how these changes are reshaping local representation. Public Transit Initiatives: McFall, co-chair of the Public Transit Caucus, shares insights on the new bill package aimed at expanding public transit, affordable housing, and placemaking efforts across Michigan. Discover how $2 billion over ten years could transform the state's transit landscape. Affordable Housing Crisis: Addressing the housing shortage, McFall talks about initiatives to create consistent funding for affordable housing, targeting the "missing middle" and ensuring more Michiganders can find affordable places to live. Retirement Savings Legislation: Learn about the "MI Secure Retirement" bill, which aims to provide retirement savings options for Michigan workers, particularly those employed by small businesses, to help them avoid financial hardship in their later years (and save the state taxpayers money in the long run). Future Prospects: McFall shares his vision for the next year, hoping for the successful passage of critical legislation and a statewide focus on housing and transit issues that have traditionally been seen as regional concerns. I hope you find this an insightful episode on the policy efforts shaping the future of Metro Detroit and Michigan. This week we talk about different ways to travel around Michigan, whether it's by food, farm, Finnish sauna, or fine wine. We were looking for tips on travels from both local and national experts, and we have an interesting line-up of guests this week.We start off with James Beard Foundation nominee, Chef James Rigato who owns the award-winning restaurant Mabel Gray in Hazel Park. He also is a regular up in the Keweenaw and is currently rehabbing a local bar in the area. He shares an incredible itinerary of things to explore in this beautiful and remote part of Michigan. We are big fans of farms, and to be honest, cheese and ice cream. So a visit to Country Dairy in New Era is alright by us, anytime. Did you know that you can do a farm tour here, and learn all about the dairy industry? And what is it like to give tours like these? We talk to Micah Johnson, a tour guide here, about milk machines, ice cream, and maybe (shhhh) hamburgers. He also lets us in on a really special experience you can have at the farm this spring. We learned some pretty big news this week....did you know that there is a National Sauna Week? We didn't either, but we immediately had to know more. We went right to the top, and have the executive director of the national Finlandia Foundation, Tommy Flanagan on to tell us all about it.(Congrats to Debbie Paver of Calumet, who created the winning entry in the first National Sauna Week poster contest.)When you think Michigan wine you might automatically head straight up North, but did you know there are multiple wine trails you can explore all over the lower peninsula? We catch up with Justin Gifford, the executive director of Visit Lenawee to learn more about the River Raisin Wine Trail in southeast Michigan.*8 a.m. Saturdays on WBRN - 1460 AM and 107.7 FM in Big Rapids*8 a.m. Saturdays on Kalamazoo Talk Radio 1360 WKMI*8 a.m. Saturdays on WILS-1320 AM in Lansing9 a.m. Saturdays on 92.1 Grand Haven's Favorite, WGHN-FM*10 a.m. Saturdays 95.3 WBCK-FM in Battle Creek*10 a.m. Saturdays on News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM in Benton Harbor*4 p.m. Saturdays on WIOS "The Bay's Best!" - 1480 AM & 106.9 FM in Tawas / East Tawas*7 a.m. Sundays on the following Black Diamond Broadcasting stations:-WCFX - CFX Today's Hits (95.3) in Mt. Ann Arbor husband-and-wife duo Kate McCabe and Max Sussman spoke to Stateside about their work educating others on the country they love, including all its nuanced food, culture, and history. They co-founded Bog & Thunder, a culinary-focused Ireland travel company. This Saint Patrick's Day weekend, they're hosting an Irish cuisine celebration at Frame in Hazel Park. Humanity tends to forecast what the future will be, sometimes, with striking accuracy. Pop culture predictions from the Simpsons and Back To The Future have eerily striking accuracy. On the contrary, the speculative, and mostly hyperbolic, Nostradamus-like predictions are a dime a dozen, popularized for the sake of your dollar or voting preference. What if some of the predictions of the future turn out to be true? What happens, when our bodies escape the natural barriers imposed by them at birth? Will we achieve immortality? With the interest in transhumanism at an all-time high, humanity has already eclipsed many mortal barriers once thought to be impossible, and it's likely we'll continue to do so in the name of science. Will the idea of Longevity Escape Velocity become a reality? Originally coined by biogerontologist Aubrey de Grey in a 2004 paper, the concept of Longevity Escape Velocity has been around since 1970, with Robert Anton Wilson's essay "Next Stop, Immortality". Also known as Actuarial Escape Velocity, L.E.V. is a hypothetical situation in which one's remaining life expectancy (not life expectancy at birth) is extended longer than the time that's passing. It's quite a fascinating subject! Join the Wolf and Bull in episode 74, as they discuss the ideas of Transhumanism, Immortality, and Longevity Escape Velocity with their special guests Dave Porter, and Ed Klobucher. Dave Porter is a partner and executive recruiter for Orion Solutions. Ed Klobucher is the current city manager of Hazel Park, Michigan. They both provide extensive thoughts and opinions on these topics and it was wonderful to have them on the show with us! Please be advised, this discussion is comprised entirely of opinions.
