A City For You | Горожанин

Darold Alexander is from New Orleans, Louisiana, and we have met at Herräng. He is a MC and a frontman for a few bands & a very prominent person of Herräng 2024, as you might recall. We have met with Anastasia Karachristou at Herräng, where we were both volunteering and, of course, dancing. So this episode is with a very sleep deprived version of Anastasia. Angela is originally from Peru, and she moved to Sweden 2 years ago. A criminal lawyer by profession, working currently as a team leader. Yusuf Hussein is 21 years old, born and raised in Järva, Rinkeby. He is a person of many interest - a filmmaker, a director, a poet, an engineer student, and an executive director of a creative platform “Rise and Shoot”. We met at an event in Kista, organised by The Kloud and light artist Jonas Johansson half a year ago - and here we go, talking about cities! We touched upon:

Poppy works as a lighting designer in London. She grew up in a small village near Wales, Ewyas Harold. We met while studying at UWE Bristol and we were even sharing a flat for one year. So imagine how happy we were to meet one another again after those years! We talked about:

The episode was recorded in Tel Aviv, during my short stay there. Jane was born in a small Russian town, then has been studying in Ufa, after which she moved to Shenzhen, China. We know each other with Katerina since early childhood and until we both moved to study in the UK, we had only been meeting in Cyprus, once a year. And now, during my short visit to Cyprus, we meet again! Katerina was born and raised in Cyprus, while her mom is Russian. For the past 6 years she has been living abroad - studying and working in the UK. Now she is living in Dublin, Ireland. She is fascinated by Russian literature. Sezel is currently working at Alva Labs as a customer success manager. She is originally from Bangalore, in South India - the “Silicon Valley” of India and is currently living in Kista - which is also sometimes called the Swedish “Silicon Valley”. Johanna and Tobias are landscape architects at Nyréns Arkitektkontor in Stockholm. They were both working on the Yoga Paviljong project in Vasaparken, where we have done the recording this episode. Some of the points we have touched upon:

Ursula has always been dancing and cycling (she made it through 31 countries on a bike so far...). Has has been working as a teacher, as a manager and now for 28 past years she has been a speech and language therapist in Germany. We were recording this episode at Herräng Dance Camp. Güney is from İzmir, he has been living in Istanbul for 12 years now, 7 of which that he has been doing jazz dances, lindy hop is particular. Seth is a lighting designer and a (pseudo)light artist. He worked for the past 10 years in New York as a gaffer for film & television, moved to Sweden less than a year ago. Our conversation started from me visiting his master thesis at KTH and then developed on that. Some of the points we have touched upon:

Rodrigo is working at KTH as the program director of a Masters program in Architectural Lighting Design, teaching students lighting and daylighting. I had a chance to have an informal chat with his as a part of this podcast a year after having completed that Masters and discuss soft aspects of lighting and differences between Stockholm and Mexico City. Martynas is an urban designer and planner. He graduated from Delft Institute of Technology (TU Delft) as an urbanist, and the worked in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Then came back to Lithuania and started his own studio (http://mmap.lt), in which they specialise on complex transformation projects in existing cities. ! This episode has been recorded on a Wednesday evening, February 23rd. Since then the world has changed, so it feels. I can understand people who might find this content irrelevant at the moment, but I have come to a decision to post this episode as this is a conversation that happened in that moment and I would still like to share that discussion with those who choose to listen to it - now or later. Then we came to realise that we both have been studying Architectural Lighting Design at KTH, we both have Greek origins and we both dance Lindy hop. Divya is doing her Masters in Sustainable Production Development at KTH. She has been living in Sweden for 1,5 years and it is the first time she is living on her own, which is a new experience for her. She grew up in the Southern part of India, in the state called Tamil Nadu so our discussion mainly evolves around two countries - Sweden and India. Points we have touched upon:

Anna is a Secretary General for the Diversity Charter Sweden, which is the world's biggest network for Diversity and Inclusion. She is currently living in Stockholm, and before she has been a citizen of London, Chicago and some other cities of Sweden. Anna likes having the sound of the city around, the people, the rhythm - she likes when it's fast. Some of the points we have touched upon:

Remo is coming from Switzerland (town of Zug) and sees himself as a filmmaker who is talking to people and with people, telling the stories. Besides that he is often on stage as a host, as well as being an artist and a podcast producer. He lives in two cities, which we have been discussing and comparing from various perspectives throughout the episode - Zug (30,000 inhabitants) and Berlin (3,5 million inhabitants). Greg is a founder of an organisation "New To Sweden", which works to help newcomers integrate to the Swedish society and the local labour market, through working with individuals and employers. We have first met through the Diversity Panel in THS Armada that I was moderating and Greg was one of the panelists, representing the cultural diversity perspective. Alexander is an artist, living in Helsinki, with a big interest in light as a material. He is currently participating in Nobel Week Lights with his artwork "Sender - Receiver", a 4 channel projection, inspired by photosynthesis and sunlight (in short). This week we have had a chat with Carl, who works as an Editor in Chief for Osqledaren magazine of the KTH Student Union. He is from the Southern Germany, from a little village of 1000 inhabitants, now studying Masters in Architecture in Stockholm. For him a city is overwhelming, but also a place to explore the unexpected. It is about exploration. Today we are talking with Isabel, a lighting designer at White Arkitekter, born and raised in the South of Chile. She is currently running a research project on sustainability and lighting design, which is also linked to Sustainable Lighting podcast that Isabel is running together with Maha Shalaby. Saskia presents herself as a half-Swedish, half-Australian with art being her main passion. She runs "Stockholm Art Guide" account and is currently working in the art gallery. Saskia and I have met through Galleri Frihamnstorget (run by Blivande), where both of us have been working. This is a collage episode with different people replying to two "a city for you" questions: ❓What is a city for you? ❓ What are you for the city? The drop-in city talks happened at the (Not You Average) Fall Fair in 2 Oct 2021 in Järnvägsparken, next to the Central station in Stockholm. This episode raises questions and invites for reflection, I feel.
