Disturbingly, Kahari coerced Ramberg's 10-year-old son into assisting him during this horrific ordeal.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome back, Elisabeth! This time I am very excited to be speaking to Artist, Elisabeth Condon, about one of my favorite Chicago Imagists: Christina Ramberg. The Art Institute of Chicago recently mounted a retrospective of Ramberg's work and Elisabeth travelled to see the show this past summer. She spent time telling me about her favorite works, but also offered insight into Ramberg's personality and teaching style - as Elisabeth was her student in graduate school at SAIC in the late 80's. Ramberg is known for her small but tightly-wound acrylic paintings of disembodied women: truncated torsos, legless high heels shoes, floating suits, and body-less corsets, but also produced quilts and a series of satellite paintings shortly before she died at 49 of Pick's disease. Episode No. 674 features curators Kristen Collins and Nancy K. Turner, and curator Thea Liberty Nichols. Collins and Turner are the curators of "Lumen: The Art and Science of Light" at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. "Lumen" explores how scientific understandings of light shaped the visual culture of the Middle Ages. It includes over 100 works, including celestial globes, golden altars, and illuminated manuscripts from the Christian and Islamic worlds. It's on view through December 8, 2024. "Lumen" is part of PST ART : Art & Science Collide, a regional cultural celebration taking place across over 70 Southland exhibition and performance spaces. It is accompanied by an excellent catalogue published by the Getty. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $60-70. With Mark Pascale, Thea Liberty Nichols is the co-curator of "Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective," which opens at the Hammer Museum on October 12 and which runs through January 5, 2025. Ramberg was a painter who developed an intense visual vocabulary derived from often fetishized objects such as corsets, hands, high-heeled shoes and hair, building from them into arresting compositions. Late in her life -- Ramberg died in 1995 at the age of 49 -- she also made an extraordinary series of quilts. The exhibition was a significant critical hit at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it was on view over the summer. The wonderful catalogue was published by the Art Institute of Chicago, which originated the show. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $45.

How does an organization create a signature fundraising gala with a very large, multi-generational following? Today, I talk with Helping Hand Home Board President Beth Plater, as well as Kerianne Oliver and Jennifer Ramberg, co-chairs of the upcoming annual signature fundraising event, Crystal Ball. Crystal Ball is the largest nonprofit gala in Austin each year, drawing over 2,000 people with guests ranging from 5 to 105 years old. The event raises over $2,000,000 with proceeds going towards programs to provide a safe haven for children experiencing neglect, abuse, or abandonment. In this episode, Beth, Kerianne, and Jennifer provide great insights on a range of topics including how to create a strong board of directors AND a a strong advisory board, how board leadership successfully works with event chairs, and tips on creating a successful event that draws people of all ages.
Nietzsche said of this work that it was “the best German book”. For the last nine years of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's life, Johann Peter Eckermann journaled about their conversations together. Goethe was a celebrity at the time, and destined to be remembered as perhaps the greatest writer of the German language, certainly of the 19th century. Eckermann, on the other hand, was a farmboy with a talent for copying - whether it was the artwork of Ramberg or the poetic style of Korner. When he met Goethe, who was in his seventies at the time, the young Eckermann looked up to him as the greatest of poets, and wanted nothing more than to record all of his wonderful memories with Goethe. In this work we find no narrative arc or rigorous structure, but simply a series of thoughts and feelings. It is a portrait of Goethe rather than a story about him, and offers a fascinating view into a different time and place.

Sarah Ramberg worked for an environmental engineering and consulting firm for 15 years. After being laid off in 2017, she decided to turn her passion for sewing with flannel and upcycling into a full-time career. Sarah was bitten by the antiquing, thrifting, and garage sale bug when she was in Junior High. Today, she feels a fundamental need to repurpose and recycle broken and neglected items in lieu of buying new things whenever possible. She describes upcycling as taking something that already exists and improving it to your own personal tastes. Maybe you want to transform one style into another, or infuse more color into something, or create something that's distinctly you. Sarah shares some of her own projects and says that an upcycling project can be anything from turning old flannel shirts into a wreath to painting a picture frame or turning a bed frame into a bench. Whether simple or complex, you're taking something old and turning it into a wonderful creation that's borne from your imagination. Her suggestion for those just getting started is to go to a local thrift store and look around to see what you feel drawn to. She also encourages aspiring upcyclers to check out Pinterest or YouTube for inspiration, and shares that, as a vlogger, she loves getting emails from people who share photos of their finds, be it a window or a funk flannel shirt. (2:25-17:19)Sarah's love of flannel likely began in the early 90s when grunge was the rage and flannel was virtually a social icon. Having done several flannel projects on her blog, she was excited when she was approached by a publisher who wanted to create a book about flannel crafts. Crafting with Flannel is full of creative and engaging craft tutorials, designed to motivate and inspire. Another great source of inspiration is her website and blog, Sadie Seasongoods, which is about, “Living a firsthand life using secondhand things.” Sarah loves traveling, and many of her blogs are about projects that came out of her travels and the discoveries she made at thrift shops along the way. Through her travels, she also discovered a new phenomenon called “creative reuse.” These creative reuse stores and organizations are popping up everywhere and are like craft thrift shops. Sarah describes them as having oodles and oodles of great crafts and art supplies and strange items that have been donated. She is excited that more people are taking an interest in upcycling, and the implications that could have for our planet. “I think there are just an unlimited number of ways that we could all kind of take a breath and look at our impact and our footprint.” (17:25-25:58)Sarah is committed to living a more creative, less disposable life and this podcast exemplifies her passion and vision. If you're ready to be inspired, kick back and listen, and then keep the inspiration going by connecting with Sarah at sadieseasongoods.com, on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You can also email her at Sadieseasongoods@yahoo.com If you know someone who has an outstanding story that should be shared on this podcast, drop Meg a note to Meg@sewandsopodcast.com or complete the form on our website.
