Change your relationship with food and exercise with Ailey Jolie anorexia, orthorexia, excessive exercise, mindfulness 3 Listen on iTunes | Google Podcast | Overcast |Spotify | Anchor Ailey Jolie coach I once lived with an eating disorder. My experiences in the entertainment industry offered a cultural environment where my disordered behaviours were not only accepted but encouraged. Despite being immersed and successful in this culture, performing with the Royal Moscow Ballet by age thirteen and wearing the crown of Miss Canada before my twentieth birthday, my struggle with food and body stemmed not from these experiences but from earlier trauma. Changing my relationship with food meant changing the relationship I had with myself - first. Doing this meant looking at how my behaviour with food mirrored a deeper internal struggle and previous pain. My experience of healing is why I am passionate about helping others, not only recover, but live embodied lives. Facebook We live in a world where we battle obesity, especially in the western countries, ameteur athletes and active people lean (pun intended) towards the opposite extreme. Sometimes we don't realize it we can be overfed and undernourished but also underfed and undernourished, neither of which is ideal for our health. In the first episode of 2019 I had an opportunity to talk with Ailey Jolie, who specializes in helping active people with eating disorders such as orthorexia, anorexia and excessive exercise. All of these are prevalent in sports and especially among women but men are not far behind. Why I found our discussion very informative as more and more people chase the image of a perfect body and the idea of the perfect athlete, often losing touch with reality and their bodies.Let's find out together how to have a healthy relationship with food and our bodies and even improve how to feel good, look strong, and perform better. What are some of the issues athletes face when in a low energy availability state?negative body compositiontiredness, loss of bone densitylose of hairlowered RMR (rested metabolic rate)loss of libido and hormonal disturbance"However, the group with higher EXDS score did not adjust their energy intake to match the increased energy needs, thus resulting in a more negative energy balance with an increased risk of lower blood glucose and higher cortisol levels."[1][1] [Torstveit MK, Fahrenholtz IL, Lichtenstein MB, et al Exercise dependence, eating disorder symptoms and biomarkers of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) among male endurance athletes , BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine 2019;5:e000439. doi: 10.1136/bmjsem-2018-000439] Shownotes Ailey's background 00:07:45 Ailey competes in Miss Teen Canada and her background with ballet. 00:09:00 the moment she realized there was something wrong 00:10:20 eating disorders in aesthetic sports 62% of women and 32% of men are affected anorexia and body dismorphia 00:16:22 the root cause of eating disorders orthorexia "an obsession with being healthy is not being healthy. As an endurance athlete herself, Heidi’s primary focus is with endurance athletes. Reach Heidi on eNRG Website Facebook Show Notes As we spoke in the previous episode - Metabolic efficiency training and nutrition periodization with Bob Seebohar, metabolic efficiency training is from a large part about controlling your blood sugar response and training your body to be better at utilizing fat for fuel and how we can teach it to do that by manipulating our nutrition. Specifically by reducing carbohydrate availability. Plant-based and vegan food tend to be higher in carbohydrates. Even plant based sources of protein come with a carbohydrate load, while animal sources of protein usually come with fat or in better case, lean protein. Therefore it might be challenging for a plant based athlete to reduce their carbohydrate intake, unless he or she pays attention to their nutrition. This is just one of the topics that we address in the latest podcast episode with Heidi Strickler, who specializes in metabolic efficiency training and works with endurance, OCR, plant-based athletes. 00:08:00 Heidi's on her transition to plant-based diet 00:13:00 Heidi in the recipes you can find in her new book 00:15:31 Fat adaptation definition 00:16:20 Foods for metabolic efficiency specific to plant-based athletes 00:22:51 Can a vegan get the benefits of metabolic efficiency at a higher carbohydrate diet when you still control your insulin response by consuming smart carbohydrates? 00:30:19 Heidi's experience with metabolic efficiency training 00:33:00 How is it possible to burn more fat at a higher heart rate and effort? 00:39:45 Does adaptation to burning more fat hinder your top performance? 00:45:09 Who will benefit from metabolic efficiency training? 00:47:11 Heidi's metabolic test results before and after 00:49:19 OCR specific advice 00:56:01 How to connect with Heidi Question: What is your take on Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio in a diet? Answer: Yes, considering your n6:n3 ratio is important. Some may argue more important than just knowing your n3 value alone. Ideal value is 3:1-5:1. Many Americans are nearly 20:1. There is an overabundance of n6 in the Western diet, due their prevalence in processed foods (soybean, sunflower, safflower oils). Plant based individuals (esp vegans) really struggle to get adequate n3, particularly EPA and DHA, as they come only from fatty seafood and sea veg. I always recommend n3 supplements, but which one and how much I recommend is very dependent on the individual. We offer n3 testing. I provide personalized recommendations after the results come in. I personally think it is one of the most useful tests we offer, and because it is mail-in, they can be anywhere in the world.

But if you go through life without ever reflecting you might miss it." These are the words of Airek that stuck with me. Eating for Health, Longevity, and Fitness with Charles Ruffieux 3 Listen on: Hey guys, welcome and I hope you will enjoy this episode because Charles and I had an amazing conversation about the food we eat. The great thing about food is, that we all can understand it differently, use it, abuse it, it can help us bond with friends and socialize. There are many aspects how food affects us indirectly. In this episode we talked about the longevity perspective and how food influences our life-span. But not only that. We also talked about how food influences the quality of our life. There are so many things that could have been said and so many more things we could have mentioned but we had only so much time... I hope you will enjoy it, learn something new, and Charles will be back later for another episode. If you have comments or questions we can focus on in the next episode, let us know! Vegan Bodybuilder Shaneve Swift 3 In this episode, Shaneve and me dive into the topic of veganism. Shaneve used to be a track&field athlete during her early years from middle school through college but then she decided to try bodybuilding. It was at the time she was transitioning to a vegan diet and so she faced problems, many new vegan athletes do. She was not sure about what to eat or how often to eat, she was not even sure about whether it would be possible for her to build muscle on a vegan diet. However, Shaneve had a compelling reason. Her love for animals allowed her to make the step of faith and she committed to the vegan life-style. She hired a personal trainer and soon she started seeing results. Now her mission is to inspire people and help them with the vegan lifestyle. PhDr. Michal Kopčan - Sports Mental Coach 3 In today's episode I have a great time speaking with PhDr. Michal Kopčan, an IMGCA (International Mental Game Coaching Association) certified coach who works with high-level athletes in and outside of Slovakia. Michal shares with us his great energy, passion, and insights that will enable you to better understand yourself, which in return helps with your performance and well-being. During the podcast, we cover topics such as Michal's background, the concept of flow, how to work with emotions to perform well, how to motivate yourself and stay motivated long-term and what to do when it seems like you have lost your motivation. In the end, we also mention how to overcome an injury from the mental perspective, which is something anybody involved in sports will experience sooner or later... and that is a learning experience in itself. How Relationships Effect Your Well-Being and Performance 3 Listen on iTunes If you are new to my blog, welcome. My aim is to provide motivation and inspiration so you can create a high-performance lifestyle, nourish your body, strengthen your mind, and develop your spirit. My hope is that you use the knowledge, tips, and inspiration to improve your life, those in around you, and have an impact on the world. But it all starts with you! Having said that, the most important thing for making a difference is how you feel. That is why I consider different angles when working clients. Some people benefit most from improving their health, energy, and focus, others from getting a deeper understanding of themselves, and some from creating relationships that support them in their personal and business goals alike. This post is about relationships as a crucial part of our well-being, which also impacts your performance, both mental and physical. Importance of relationships No matter how healthy your body is, how mentally strong you are, how skilful and successful you are, if there is nobody else to share your success with, your life will be incomplete. Interpersonal relationships (relationships between people) have the power to multiply your results, good or bad. Great relationships, therefore, have the power to make your successes double the effect while blunting the negative effects any setbacks and struggles you encounter on your path. Bad relationships have exactly the opposite effect. They make your success seem not as important and bring you down, exhausting you in the process. As these effects compound, you will more and more likely lose your motivation, inspiration and vision to move forward and start focusing on surviving. Just like interpersonal relationships, you require to develop and nurture your relationship with yourself. If you don't care about yourself, don't love yourself, don't set healthy boundaries, why should others treat you better? At any time, we show people how they should treat us. We give them an example of how we treat ourselves. If you tolerate when a person behaves badly with you, they will keep treating you badly. Would a person who has a self-respect keep around people who treat him or her badly? No! By nurturing yourself, your love for yourself, you remove people who treat you badly from your life. Some of them will stop when they see you don't tolerate it. Some of them won't. You need to release them from your life. It might be scary at first, especially if the person in question is somebody close to you, but there is too much at stake - your life, your well-being, and sometimes even mental sanity. To sum it up, what you need to do is to: Nurture your self-love and self-respect, develop your self-esteem; Remove negative people from your life and keep the great people in your life. What doesn't grow dies. How to create connection with people When I was younger, I experienced a frustration that led me to where I am now. I wanted to get a girlfriend. I was desperate. The craving allowed me to search for the information about how to get a girlfriend, part of which was starting a conversation with a woman. While the information I got to was not very good to my standards nowadays, it definitely helped me to shape my mindset and grow. What I want to focus on now, is to provide you with information and strategies that you can use to create more impactful connections with people you meet, right now! Be Present Your attention is often the greatest gift you can give to somebody. The connection happens even before you start speaking. Most people focus on what to say, while the most important part is how you say it. Just look at your experience from the past.

Elisa Oras on Healing Eating Disorders and Intuitive Eating 3 If you are an athlete, a woman or a man working in an industry where appearance matters... well that means you are living in the western human society, you should listen to this podcast. You see it everywhere. Low carb diet, high carb diet, keto, Intermittent Fasting, gluten-free diet. vegan diet and the list goes on and on. Every few months there is a new diet on the market. Have you ever thought about it? Have you ever tried to lose weight? Are you eating healthily? We got to the point that we are chasing ideals portrayed by media. Sometimes we even think that it is what we want. You want to have a six-pack or the perfect bottom. I know I wanted to have the six pack a few years ago and it was because of a perceived approval or a status I would (maybe) achieve by having it. Please, take a second and think about why you want that ideal body. Is it for yourself? Is it for the looks? What is your reason, let me know in the comments! Any kind of altered eating can end up in disordered eating. However, disorders are accepted and even caused by our society. Just remember Nivea's campaign portraying women of all shapes and sizes and colors to bring attention to this issue. This was a great step from them! There is still much to do. Many young women in pursue to fit in into standards of beauty, which is closely linked to lean bodies, eating "healthily" and confusion from all the media end up with some of the eating disorders. Athletes are threatened by it as well. If you want to make a weigh-in, you've got to sweat all the water out, which is not very healthy. When you look at endurance athletes, we have the mindset that more is better - more running, more cycling and less weight for better power to weight ratio. This can be dangerous if it makes your life too restrictive, in some way. I feel it is necessary to note that the dose makes the poison. In this case, what might be too restrictive for me and on a borderline of disordered eating, might be perfectly fine for you. Having said that, I spotted that I might be leaning into the disordered eating territory and that is when I found Elisa on youtube. From the first moment, I resonated with her message. She shares advice on how to overcome eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and orthorexia and she was so kind to join me for this podcast episode. Mentioned in the podcast: Reverse dieting - Layne Norton You can connect with Elisa here: Facebook Youtube Elisa's ebook (Step-by-step approach to eating disorder recovery!) Nicole Mericle on Mental Game of Racing, Balance in Life and Diet 3 Alternative source: This week's podcast with Nicole miracle, ehm Mericle. Why miracle? Because many commented on her sudden appearance to Spartan Race accompanied by reaping the podium finishes one by one. But the truth is that she has been racing since childhood and has put a lot of work into her performance physically and mentally. During our lovely chat, we delve into topics like how she overcomes suffering, her mental preparation (and in the end of the episode I add more useful information about how to change your emotional state for better performance), her vision and nutrition. Let me know what you think and enjoy! Show-notes: The most important part we spoke about that really stood out to me was how Nicole overcomes suffering and pre-race nervousness. As she said, nervousness equals ready to race in her mind. That frame of mind allows her to calm down and reduce it. You can start using that method too! Our emotions are created by three different things: our focus, the meaning, and our physiology. By changing any part of the triad, you can change your emotion (after you get aware of it). What Nicole does is that she changes the meaning of the experience she has, therefore interrupting it. You can also change it by changing your physiology as it is deeply rooted in our brain - when we are happy we might jump, when we are sad we are slumpy and sloppy when tired. When it comes to running, a tired runner can be spotted by having a bad form. Here is an experiment for you. Next time you run and you get tired, focus on your form and posture. When you start getting sloppy notice how you feel. Then correct it to the proper form and compare the results. You can find Nicole here: Facebook: Nicole Mericle Instagram: @nickeldm
George Howard on Overcoming Fear, Sharing Love, and Being Self 3 Shownotes: I hope you enjoyed the interview with George as much as I did talking with him. George Howard's website. Here are notes to recap this episode: Movement is an ongoing theme that you can spot among many high-performing individuals, from athletes to CEOs. Not only does it have health and mental benefits, but as George mentioned, movement can teach you to get in touch with your body, which is something we all miss nowadays. Taking action regardless of perceived fear is important as it allows you to grow. "Feel the fear and take action anyway.", go alongside the fear, don't try to avoid it or resist it. There are two kinds of fear. There is the real fear that is instilled deeply in us and it serves us to help us survive. Then there is what we feel most of the time, which is a "safe" fear, such as fear of public speaking, that served us in the past, but we keep feeling it even though it no longer serves us. We are constantly trying to avoid the feeling of fear because we have developed a very negative association with it. It is important to note though, that the fear itself is to serve us. By kindling the fear, we can develop a loving, purposeful relationship with it. Mindsets to replace your old thinking patterns: Fear is a tool for growth. Fear is here to protect me and I am thankful for it. If there is no real threat I will acknowledge my fear and "jump" anyway. When I feel fear, I will go towards it or alongside with it. It shows me the way to greater life. Questions worth asking yourself: What am I afraid of? What role does the specific fear play in my life? Is the fear I am feeling here to protect me from the real danger or is it just uncomfortable? Faye Stenning on Grit, Life and Fulfillment 3 In this episode of Average to Exceptional I had an opportunity to speak with a Spartan Race Pro racer, Faye Stenning. Not only is this woman a Canadian superwoman when it comes to overcoming obstacles during a race, but also when it comes to grit in life. The amount of wisdom, integrity, and humility she has to share is exceptional. Topics we discuss in the podcast: grit and perseverance, being stubborn, Faye mentions how she gets through the hard times during the race, Fayes' view on relationships of athletes and the mistakes to avoid in order to make your fulfilling relationship, not a training partner. You can reach Faye through her website, Grit Coaching. Follow her on Instagram @fayestenning_ocr or Facebook with the same handle, Faye Stenning OCR. Majo Srník Ultrarunner 3 Majo Srník ultra runner Majo Srník is my countryman who moved to Canada years ago where he now lives with his wife, dogs, and runs ...a lot. Facebook What if you decide one day to pack your stuff and move to a different country? This is the thought that many of us had at some point in our life. Majo Srník did it when he moved to Canada in 2011 to start a new life with his girlfriend. Overcoming struggles of life he decided to seek a new challenge - running. It happened when he asked himself one day "What if I went for a run?" And so he threw away his cigarette and started running. He liked the feeling and decided that if he wants to run longer, he needs to stop smoking. From there on, it was just a matter of time till he got to ultra distances. Actually, it took him just three years from his start in running to cooperation with brands like Vivo Barefoot, Luna sandals, and Nathan - a dream of many athletes. Important to say, he is not an elite runner, but he enjoys it more than most people do and that is what counts here. To be happy in life, do things that make you happy. Grind is necessary but if you are to grind yourself to the place where you do things for the sake of doing them, that is not sustainable. Majo shared a lot of life wisdom like the one above during our conversation and that is why you should listen to this episode of Average to Exceptional. Luke Bosek on Ultra Endurance in Sports and Life 3 Luke Bosek is an ultra-endurance athlete who happens to be my running coach. The reason I asked him for this interview was simple. I view endurance training and racing as something that develops your spirit and mind as much as your body. When you think about it, everybody is able to push oneself hard for a short period of time. However what we see in sports and business world alike is that those who can sustain their effort long term are the winners. That requires consistency, discipline, sacrifices and grit. This applies to any area of your life. Results simply need time and the most important is what you can sustain over the long period of time. And Luke is definitely the guy to go! Besides his athletic achievements, which are plenty, he also works as a sales person. A job that I revere highly as it is mentally demanding and if you put it in conjunction with endurance racing, the result is mental toughness few people achieve. I invite you to sit back, enjoy your coffee and pay attention to the podcast.
