Is the Bible applicable in today's modern society — and can its content be trusted to help believers solve every question that pops up, from which job to take to where to live to what to cook for dinner? Answer: Yes. Many modern Americans believe in God; that is to say, believe God exists. But far too many believers don't think God works in their own personal lives. They think God is too busy, too distant, too unconcerned to deal with the day-to-day. But that's completely untrue. Mark Gerson, author of "God Was Right," has much to say about the matter.
Knowing the best time to retire is tough to figure out because of all the details involved, but if you can answer 'YES' to these 5 questions, it might be time to start thinking about it!

What does a bee sting have to do with burnout, boundaries, and saying “yes” or “no”? Everything. In this episode, Carole Jean Whittington shares a personal story from the past week—an unexpected MCAS reaction to a bee sting—and how it became a deep practice in rest, self-check-ins, and honoring her own “yes, no, or maybe” in real time. She also brings in reflections from her Accelerate Circle students in The UnVeiling Method, where they explored the powerful questions that help us recognize what we're agreeing to—both with others and ourselves.Whether you're navigating people-pleasing, energetic overwhelm, or the fuzzy in-between of not knowing what your body or nervous system is saying… this episode offers real insight, warm encouragement, and a reminder that checking in with yourself is a form of radical care.✨ Key Questions We Explored:What does your body say when it wants to say “no”?Is this really a “yes,” or just a habit? How can you begin practicing a pause, even when it's uncomfortable? This episode is an invitation to move from auto-pilot into authentic alignment—one conscious “yes,” “no,” or “maybe” at a time.

This week's episode of the Tuck In Podcast is nothing short of being: “Overdressed, Underdressed, and Everything In Between”. Featuring Olive, Sandra & Catherine – your favourite trio of truth bombs in activewear and opinions. In this gloriously chaotic episode, the Tucker sisters dive headfirst into the minefield that is fashion faux pas, from white socks to hairy toes and everything in between—literally.Kicking things off, Olive declares war on white socks, particularly when paired with black runners and tracksuit bottoms. She's not holding back. She saw a man on the street and was nearly compelled to stage a public fashion intervention. Sandra tries to play devil's advocate (“Maybe he was comfy!”), but Olive's already too deep. White socks outside the gym? Absolutely not. Fashion jail. No bail.Catherine, the eldest and chilliest, admits to wearing her husband's trainers (a size too big) just to avoid cleaning her own. She completes the look with a black coat that might be part invisibility cloak, part survival gear. Practicality: 10. Style: under review.Cue a deep, philosophical debate: comfort vs. fashion. Is it okay to wear gym gear if you haven't been to the gym? Should leggings be worn without underwear? Do strapless bras belong in the bin? (Answer: Yes, especially if they migrate south mid-night-out.)The ladies air their laundry—literally and figuratively—ranting about bra straps peeking out, plastic “condensation holder” straps, and the deeply disturbing emergence of nude leggings that make passersby wonder, “Is she wearing anything at all?”Olive has a gym epiphany: she must “up her game” and gets herself a pair of fancy runners for Valentine's Day. Sandra questions the motive (“Are you a shepherd or a sheep?”), but Olive's on a mission to look as good as she feels. Even if that means colour-coordinating her socks with the smell of fabric softener.Things spiral beautifully into the world of feet. From toenail shellac etiquette to toe extensions, the sisters leave no foot unroasted. Olive claims she could've been a foot model before her post-kid “wonky foot” era. Sandra reveals she shaves her toes, much to everyone's delight/horror.Then the conversation... takes a turn. We're talking hairy backs, nipple pads, and OnlyFans knickers. Yes, apparently used socks and pants are a booming side hustle. The girls are sceptical, horrified, and slightly intrigued. And just when you think it can't get any wilder, Olive paints a picture of gripping onto a man's hairy back mid-intimacy like she's climbing Everest. Catherine loses it. Sandra can't breathe. And listeners everywhere are trying to unhear what they've just heard. It's fashion advice, hygiene tips, unsolicited confessions, and full-body laughter—all in one madcap episode. One thing's for sure: these sisters have opinions, and they're not afraid to wear them... even if they clash with their socks.Follow:https://www.instagram.com/tuckinsisters/https://twitter.com/Tuckinsistershttps://www.tiktok.com/@tuckinsistersProduced by Graco Studioshttps://www.gracostudios.comhttps://twitter.com/gracostudioshttps://instagram.com/gracostudioshttps://tiktok.com/@gracostudios Hosted on Acast. Series: Signs & GloryTitle: “Can I Trust Jesus With Everything?”Scripture: John 6:1-21Psalm 41:1-4Bottom line: I can trust God with everything, even when in need, because he provides, he cares, and he is with us.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDOpening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him and leading others to do the same. INTRODUCTIONThe Tightrope Walker and the WheelbarrowIn the 19th century, a famous tightrope walker named Charles Blondin became famous for walking across Niagara Falls on a rope. Niagara Falls has three main waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The entire width of Niagara Falls (including all three sections) is about 3,950 feet (1,204 meters), or roughly ¾ of a mile wide. It's height ranges from 90 to 181 feet high (9 to 18 stories)He performed the stunt multiple times, each time adding a new challenge—walking blindfolded, on stilts, even carrying a stove and cooking an omelet in the middle of the rope. One day, a huge crowd gathered to watch as he planned to push a wheelbarrow across the rope. Before starting, he asked the crowd, “Do you believe I can push this wheelbarrow across the falls?”The crowd cheered, “Yes! We believe!”Then Blondin pointed to a man in the front and asked, “Do you trust me enough to get in the wheelbarrow?”The man froze. Believing from the sidelines was easy. But trusting enough to get in? That was a different question. Can I trust Jesus with everything? It's one thing to say we believe Jesus can provide, protect, and lead us. But do we trust Him enough to truly depend on Him with everything? To put our whole lives in His hands? That's the question in John 6:1-21—the disciples and the crowd see Jesus' miracles, but will they truly trust Him? Will we?“Can I Trust Jesus With Everything?”Bottom line: I can trust God with everything, even when in need, because he provides, he cares, and he is with us.I. Answer: Yes, You Can Trust Jesus With Everything.Jesus provides abundantly (He cares) (John 6:1-15): Jesus doesn't just meet immediate needs—He provides more than enough.Jesus steps into our storms (He is with us) (John 6:16-21): He walks on the water to His disciples, showing He has control over the chaos we face.Jesus offers eternal life (He is able) (John 6:35): He's not just here to meet temporary needs; He's the Bread of Life, offering lasting satisfaction.II. Why Can I Trust Jesus? (He Cares & Provides because He is Able)He is the Provider (He cares)"The problem, of course, was how to meet the needs of such a vast crowd of people. Four solutions were proposed.First, the disciples suggested that Jesus send the people away..." (No, hungry people faint. Plus almost night.)Second, buy food. That's a lot of money. Remote place. Third, get people to share their food. Way too little.Fourth, trust the Lord to provide. Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 1, p. 309). Victor Books. In the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus shows He has the power to meet physical needs abundantly, even when resources seem scarce. Why trust Him? He is the One who provides for our needs, and He does so with more than enough. He is Present in Our Struggles (He is with us)Jesus meets His disciples in the middle of their storm, walking on water to reassure them. Why trust Him? He sees us, is present with us in our difficulties, and has the power to bring peace. He is the Source of Eternal Life (He is able)Jesus offers Himself as the Bread of Life, the one who satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger. Why trust Him? His provision goes beyond the temporary—He offers us eternal life.III. How Do I Trust Jesus?Offer What You Have (John 6:9) (Hint: Something & Everything)Like the boy with the loaves and fish, bring what little you have to Jesus and trust Him to multiply it for His purposes."The practical lesson is clear: whenever there is a need, give all that you have to Jesus and let Him do the rest. Begin with what you have, but be sure you give it all to Him." Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 1, p. 309). Victor Books. What You Give to God, He MultipliesHattie May Wiatt, a six-year-old girl, lived near Grace Baptist Church in Philadelphia, USA. The Sunday school was very crowded. Russell H. Conwell, the minister, told her that one day they would have buildings big enough to allow everyone to attend. She said, ‘I hope you will. It is so crowded I am afraid to go there alone.' He replied, ‘When we get the money we will construct one large enough to get all the children in.' Two years later, in 1886, Hattie May died. After the funeral Hattie's mother gave the minister a little bag they had found under their daughter's pillow containing 57 cents in change that she had saved up. Alongside it was a note in her handwriting: ‘To help build bigger so that more children can go to Sunday school.' The minister changed all the money into pennies and offered each one for sale. He received $250 – and 54 of the cents were given back. The $250 was itself changed into pennies and sold by the newly formed ‘Wiatt Mite Society'. In this way, her 57 cents *kept on multiplying*. Twenty-six years later, in a talk entitled, ‘The history of the 57 cents', the minister explained the results of her 57-cent donation: a church with a membership of over 5,600 people, a hospital where tens of thousands of people had been treated, 80,000 young people going through university, 2,000 people going out to preach the gospel – all this happened ‘because Hattie May Wiatt invested her 57 cents'. The theme of multiplication runs throughout the Bible. What cannot be achieved by addition, God does by multiplication. You reap what you sow, only many times more. What you give to the Lord, he multiplies. How to trust Him? Give Jesus what you have, even if it seems small, and trust He can do more with it than you can imagine. If the only thing you have to offer is a broken heart, you offer a broken heart. So in a time of grief, the recognition that this is material for sacrifice has been a very great strength for me. Realizing that nothing I have, nothing I am will be refused on the part of Christ, I simply give it to him as the little boy gave Jesus his five loaves and two fishes — with the same feeling of the disciples when they said, "What is the good of that for such a crowd?"Naturally in almost anything I offer to Christ, my reaction would be, "What is the good of that?" The point is, the use he makes of it is none of my business; it is his business, it is his blessing. So this grief, this loss, this suffering, this pain — whatever it is, which at the moment is God's means of testing my faith and bringing me to the recognition of who he is —that is the thing I can offer.Do you have nothing to give? Then give that. Your nothing plus God is everything. We need to believe that God is big enough, that he wants to help us. Then we must give our problem to him. May we set aside our pride and give it all to him."Recognize His Presence in the Storm (John 6:19-20) (He is with you; Immanuel, God with us)Did Jesus know that a storm was coming? Of course. Then why did He deliberately send His friends into danger? Quite the opposite is true: He was rescuing them from greater danger, the danger of being swept along by a fanatical crowd. But there was another reason for that storm: the Lord has to balance our lives; otherwise we will become proud and then fall. The disciples had experienced great joy in being part of a thrilling miracle. Now they had to face a storm and learn to trust the Lord more. The feeding of the 5,000 was the lesson, but the storm was the examination after the lesson.Sometimes we are caught in a storm because we have disobeyed the Lord. Jonah is a good example. But sometimes the storm comes because we have obeyed the Lord. Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 1, p. 310). Victor Books. When life feels overwhelming, turn to Jesus. When the disciples invite Him into the boat, the storm calms. How to trust Him? In the midst of your struggles, look for Jesus and invite Him into your situation. Trust that He will bring peace. Conclusion:Bottom line: I can trust God with everything, even when in need, because he provides, he cares, and he is with us.Can I trust God with some things?I often use a stool to represent trusting God with everything. This is represented by me sitting on the stool with my full weight believing it will hold me up and not collapse in front of everyone with me on it.I sometimes trust God with travel. *puts car keys on the stool*I sometimes trust God with my health. *puts medicine/pills on the stool*I sometimes trust God with my marriage. *puts wedding ring on the stool*I sometimes trust God with my finances. *puts wallet on the stool*I sometimes trust God with my education. *puts class ring on the stool*But until I sit on the stool, my faith is only temporary and not saving faith because I'm not putting the full weight of my life on the stool. I'm not fully relying on God to carry me through life no matter what I'm going through. Can you trust Jesus with everything? Yes. Jesus is fully trustworthy because He provides abundantly, steps into your struggles, and offers eternal life. To trust Him, offer what you have, recognize His presence in your struggles, and receive His words of life. What about you?Has God warned you?Do you hear his warning? Peter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVInvitationHow do we respond? Answer 2 questions:Take out a card or piece of paper right now. Write down the answer to these questions: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.Lord's Supper, 1 Cor 11:23-26 is good passage. Also, say something like, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." (past, present, and future)PrayNOTES"Regard the weak"Psalm 41:1-4 shows us how God blesses those who "regard the weak" by blessing them. God blesses those who do this. David also gives us a one verse prayer asking God to forgive us for not regarding the weak as we should."I am, I am"“In all of these sayings, Jesus prefaced descriptions of His office by a strange combination of Greek words, ego eimi. The word ego in Greek means “I am.” We get the word ego from it. But the word eimi also means “I am.” If you put them together, ego eimi literally means “I am, I am,” as if one were stuttering”“In order to understand what Jesus was doing, we need to look at the Greek translation of the Old Testament, where we see that the ineffable name of God, Yahweh, was translated into the Greek language by this same strange construction, ego eimi, which can be translated “I AM WHO I AM” (Ex. 3:14). Therefore, almost every commentator recognizes that when Jesus said, “I am the door,” “I am the bread of life,” and other “I am” sayings, He was using the divine name for Himself.”“However, when scholars enumerate the “I am” sayings in the Gospel of John, they don't include Jesus' statement here: “It is I; do not be afraid.” I'm not sure why, because it's exactly the same structure, ego eimi. Jesus said to His disciples, “Don't be afraid. It is I AM WHO I AM.”Excerpts From John - An Expositional Commentary, R.C. SproulChrist carries his people“There's an illustration here. I don't want to be maudlin, but this is the way our lives are. This story is not a parable; it is a historical narrative. However, it certainly illustrates what happens when Jesus comes into our lives. Life is a time of pulling against the oars, against resistance, trying to get somewhere. However, we're not getting anywhere and we're about to be engulfed. But as soon as Jesus gets in the boat, we're home free. That's what happens when Christ comes into the lives of His people. He doesn't take away all difficulties and make our lives beds of ease, but He gets us through the darkness. He gets us through the violence. He carries us through the storm.”R.C. Sproul"Gave thanks"It is significant that twice John mentioned the fact that Jesus gave thanks (John 6:11, 23). Matthew, Mark, and Luke all state that Jesus looked up to heaven when He gave thanks. By that act, He reminded the hungry people that God is the source of all good and needful gifts. This is a good lesson for us: instead of complaining about what we do not have, we should give thanks to God for what we do have, and He will make it go fartherWiersbe, W. W. (1996). Introducing Mountain to Molehill: A Mindfulness and Meditation Newsletter Mental Health Melissa Llarena Why Stressed Professionals Quit Meditation (And How Not To) Meditating is a good alternative to that third glass of wine at night – and might even serve as a replacement for psych meds for the most restless, stressed-out marketers, sales professionals, and ad executives dealing with the unpredictability of their virtual lives, workplace, home life, and everything else that gets logged in your head as stressful mountains to climb when in reality you're looking at a molehill you can simply hop over. Q: Why did I write this article encouraging you to return to meditation instead of relying on quicker fixes for stress? A: I know firsthand how psych meds play out. I've been an unwitting observer of a personal longitudinal study as the daughter of a mom who has been on them since 1982. My thinking is simple: if you can avoid them, do. I don't say this as a psychiatrist – I say it as a witness who has watched decades of science experiments performed on my single parent, from my toddler years through today, when the impact of this four-decade-long chemical warfare is irreversible. This deeply personal experience is why I'm committed to my mental health, and why I believe adopting and keeping a meditation practice is a powerful approach to life's realities. A consistent practice will increase your capacity to bear any weight you may be carrying – something we all need, don't you agree? Now, I know it's hard to adopt a practice from scratch, so I decided to focus on those of you who once meditated and might secretly wish to return. Let's start with the top reasons for this kind of "quiet" quitting. Notice the pun? I'll try to keep you chuckling throughout this read. But first, let's look at some serious stats... According to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, approximately 60% of people who start a meditation practice discontinue within the first year. The primary reasons include: 1. Perceived lack of time 2. Difficulty maintaining consistent practice 3. Feeling they're "not doing it right" 4. Not seeing immediate results Let's explore doable workarounds for these four reasons, considering our modern omnichannel lives. Interestingly, this study aligns perfectly with a recent LinkedIn survey I conducted, asking mid-career professionals what they wanted me to cover. Time emerged as the top concern, so let's start there. Perceived Lack of Time Let's talk about time – or the common excuse of not having enough of it. Let's dispel the idea that you're too busy to drop in and pay attention to your breath for five minutes a day. Where can you steal these five minutes? Let's start with the low-hanging fruit. According to the Harvard Business Review, professionals spend an average of 28% of their workweek managing email. That's about 3.1 hours per day reading, writing, and responding to emails, with an estimated 25% of those being unnecessary or unproductive. Take my librarian email saga, for example. I received a ridiculously long email about a book renewal that could have been summarized in three sentences. Instead, this well-meaning librarian wrote paragraphs explaining a simple process. I thought to myself: she could have meditated in the time it took to write this novel of an email. Seriously, couldn't you shave five minutes from your 3.1 hours of daily email writing for a relaxing breathing session? I have full confidence you can steal some time from email writing to meditate. It can be that simple – or perhaps meditation can become your pre-meeting ritual? My pandemic meditation journey was ritualistic. I needed a tool to reliably catch my breath and return to my three sons as the calmest version of myself; the stakes were staring me in the face. I'd drag my son's bean bag out to my wrap-around balcony – my "lanai" in honor of the Golden Girls – and sit under the sun. The benefits were two-fold: it gave me something to do during lockdowns, and I returned refreshed enough to homeschool three sons. Ultimately, I returned to my teaching post with greater patience, not totally "unsnappable," but feeling more able to relax. Pro Tip: You can always find time when a boss drops a last-minute request. Somehow, you'll complete other assignments, shorten your timeframe, stay up later, or wake up earlier. Imagine treating meditation as vitally as that urgent work assignment. This is just your way into starting a practice – not necessarily how you'll have to make it stick – which brings me to the second reason for quitting. Difficulty Maintaining Consistent Practice Willpower is overrated. There, I said it. If I had unlimited willpower, I wouldn't have half a bottle of wine in my fridge or pair my glass with partially dry Manchego cheese at six p.m. when I nestle in my corner of the sofa before my sons fight me to the death to take over the TV. This is why I endeavor to do as much as possible before 9 am every single day – it's not because I want to challenge myself but because I don't trust myself as the day gets later. There's science to back this up, which is why I apply simple heuristics to maintain a consistent meditation practice. My decision-making process is brutally simple: · Question: Do I plan to eat today? · Answer: Yes. · Action: Then I guess I'll go to the gym, walk 10K steps, and meditate before starting my workday. Don't think you need to do these things before meditating or before 9 am like me. Instead, use my question to spark your own chain of daily habits. Yours can be as simple as: · Question: Do I plan to breathe today? · Answer: Yes. · Action: Then I'll take 5 minutes to pay attention to some of those breaths. This decision tree below is for those of us who've been trained to overthink... just follow the nodes. I've found that thinking is often what gets in our way. Arnold Schwarzenegger shared the same sentiment about his workouts in his Netflix documentary: he said he could think after his workouts. Same goes for meditating. Think later. See Substack. https://open.substack.com/pub/melissallarena/p/why-stressed-professionals-quit-meditation?r=fetqt&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true My meditation practice looks different every day. Sometimes I'll light a candle, drop on my carpeted floor with earbuds, and hum along to a guru telling me: "I am not my body. I am not my mind." Let's call this my "scruffy, get it done" meditation. Other times I've meditated with my eyes open during a commute. I believe in habit stacking – pairing one existing habit with a new one. Not Seeing Immediate Results On Halloween 2023, I self-published my book "Fertile Imagination." My goal was to become an Amazon bestseller. While my three boys were putting on Halloween costumes, I was copy/pasting/pitching/praying. My ranking wasn't moving despite my efforts. I had two choices: toss my laptop out the window and curse Bezos, or maintain unwavering belief in the process. I kept going. When I woke up at 5 am, I was number one in two categories. Sure, I was just a good night's rest away from seeing my goal come true – but writing the book had taken two years, securing early readers required 35 outbound emails a day for months, and Amazon needed 24 hours to update their stats. A LOT went into it behind the scenes. This experience mirrors the practice of meditation. It requires consistent effort, even when you don't see immediate results. You must trust that the benefits will manifest over time, just as I trusted my book would eventually rise in the ranks. It's about cultivating a deep-seated belief in the power of the practice, even when your mind whispers doubts. Feeling They're "Not Doing It Right" The internet paints a picture of meditation that's a bit... idealized. You know the image: serene folks, Lululemon-clad, perched on fancy meditation pillows, humming along to some ethereal YouTube guru. That's not exactly my reality. This morning, I was planning to meditate, but my phone battery died. So, I grabbed my timer and dropped onto the carpet, aiming for those 25 minutes of blissful silence. But let's just say, my meditation practice looked a little different. If I'd meditated any longer, my husband might have gotten out the masking tape to document a crime scene. Let me explain. If you could have seen me, I was definitely not dressed for a yoga retreat – just my usual work attire: brown boots, ripped jeans, and a cashmere sweater. Picture it: a perfectly respectable professional, now sprawled on their living room floor, looking like a crime scene victim. Pause for a second to see how Canva's image-generating AI "Dream Lab" doesn't care about doing things "right." Let's learn from it. The first try is so wacky and wrong. See Substack for images. https://open.substack.com/pub/melissallarena/p/why-stressed-professionals-quit-meditation?r=fetqt&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true The image below is closer to my original description, but it's still not "quite right" – like many AI-generated images. So give yourself some grace and aim for "good enough right now" rather than "perfect." See Substack for images. https://open.substack.com/pub/melissallarena/p/why-stressed-professionals-quit-meditation?r=fetqt&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true Side note: if you had a second to take that pause, then you have time to meditate. ;) No side-eye from me – just pointing this out. Here's the truth: There's no right way to meditate. You can meditate in a closet, on a Trader Joe's line, or in a nursery room. Simply be present. Here's the easiest way to begin your meditation practice: Wear your work clothes. Perfect. Find a comfortable spot: A bed, sofa, or even a random rug. Even better. Set a timer for 10 minutes. Focus on your breath. Your thoughts will arise — that's normal. Gently guide your attention back to your breath. Give yourself a mental high-five when you return to breathing. Commit to finding your own meditation style. Meditation has two-fold benefits when it comes to managing stress. Harvard Health Publishing confirms that meditation activates your body's relaxation response, which helps you navigate stressful situations with a sense of calm. Additionally, a JAMA Internal Medicine meta-analysis found that mindfulness meditation significantly reduces perceived stress. So, whether you have to climb a mountain, you'll feel more capable of doing so. Or perhaps you can quickly shift your perception of a mountain and see it for what it really is: a surmountable molehill. You'll want to adapt or bring back your meditation practice if you wish to see more molehills than mountains and feel resourced if it's a real mountain you must climb up or down to get to the other side. So, are you ready to give it a try? Conclusion Meditation is a practice, not a magical solution to stop thinking altogether. Be patient with yourself, and remember that even a few minutes of mindful presence can make a difference. A brief pause can give you space to reconsider a knee-jerk reaction or simply feel more capable of a tough conversation. I hope this article has provided helpful insights and encouragement. If you're struggling to establish, maintain, or restart a consistent meditation practice, please reach out via email melissa .llarena [at] gmail.com or leave a comment on the platform of your liking Substack, Medium or LinkedIn. I can offer support as a mindfulness and meditation practitioner dedicated to finding solutions that can increase your ability to navigate life's challenges and opportunities. Remember, your mental and emotional well-being is as vital as your physical health. They are interconnected, as I've observed in my research and personal experience. A healthy mind in an unhealthy body will likely experience discomfort, and an unhealthy mind can manifest in physical symptoms. Prioritize this empowering form of self-care and explore the many benefits of meditation. Your family and those you work with will appreciate it. My Story – Melissa Llarena I'm a meditation practitioner and #1 Amazon bestselling author who has spent years peering into the minds of marketers and executives, both as one of them and as their trusted guide. My articles in ForbesWomen have reached over 4 million readers, but what really lights me up is the deep work I do with people who, like me, have spent years shape-shifting to succeed. My own journey through the corporate world – 10 years at powerhouses like Ogilvy (working on IBM) and P&G (yes, even Charmin!) – taught me firsthand about wearing different hats across 14+ business functions. For the past 13 years, I've had the privilege of coaching over 200 marketing and advertising executives worldwide, having raw, honest conversations about what it really costs us to morph ourselves every single day. When I'm hosting the Mom Founder Imagination Hub podcast, I get to dive deep with remarkable leaders like Beth Comstock and GaryVee, exploring how to tap into our most overlooked superpower: imagination. My psychology degree from NYU, Dartmouth MBA, and Transformational Coaching certification gave me the foundation, but it was the pandemic that showed me – and my clients – that we needed something more. In 2021, when ambition felt impossible and imagination seemed out of reach, I realized we were all exhausted from trying to power through. That's when I took a leap – pausing my coaching practice to write a book filled with soul-searching questions, while earning my meditation certification from the Jack Kornfield organization. Now, I blend all these pieces – my corporate insider experience, thousands of honest conversations, and meditation wisdom – into workshops, sessions, and immersions that truly connect. Using imaginative meditation, mindfulness practices that even the most restless executives love, and revealing journaling exercises, I help people find their way back to themselves. Because here's what I know: when we stop losing ourselves every time life or business throws us a curveball, we can finally use our energy for what really matters – creating the impact we're meant to make.
In this episode of The Vet Dental Show, Dr. Brett Beckman, a board-certified veterinary dentist, shares valuable insights into pain management, anesthesia protocols, and best practices in veterinary dentistry. The episode discusses the cautious use of lidocaine in cats, the role of bupivacaine for effective local blocks, and the potential applications of Renia for managing chronic pain in refractory stomatitis cases. Packed with actionable advice, this episode is a must-listen for veterinarians and technicians looking to elevate patient care in their practice. Podcast Details Host: Dr. Brett Beckman, DVM, FAVD, DAVDC, DAAPM Key Highlights Topic 1: Lidocaine Use in Cats Question: Should lidocaine be used with caution in cats? Answer: Yes, lidocaine can potentially cause seizures in cats, especially when used as a continuous rate infusion (CRI). Recommendation: Replace lidocaine with bupivacaine for local nerve blocks to ensure longer-lasting analgesia (6-10 hours). Use lidocaine sparingly and with proper discretion. Topic 2: Lidocaine for Intubation Discussion: Historically, lidocaine was applied to the larynx for intubation in cats. Dr. Beckman and his team now prefer using a blunt cannula for safer intubation without the risks associated with lidocaine. Topic 3: Pain Management for Chronic Cases Case Example: Use of Renia (NK1 antagonist) in refractory stomatitis Mechanism: Blocks Substance P at the postsynaptic membrane to prevent ascending pain signals. Clinical Context: Effective for managing chronic pain when combined with ketamine (NMDA receptor antagonist). Outcome: While Dr. Beckman's team hasn't used it extensively, anecdotal feedback from the veterinary community is positive. Topic 4: Local Blocks with Bupivacaine Best Practice: Use 0.5% bupivacaine for local nerve blocks in cats and small animals. Dosage: 0.2 mL per foramen ensures safety and efficacy. Rationale: Provides prolonged analgesia compared to lidocaine, minimizing the risk of complications. Actionable Takeaways Transition to bupivacaine for local nerve blocks to enhance patient comfort and safety. Consider using Renia for managing chronic pain in severe stomatitis cases. Adopt safer intubation techniques, such as using blunt cannulas, to mitigate risks in feline patients. Leverage evidence-based pain management protocols to improve patient outcomes. Election season is well underway and politics is everywhere. It's one of our busiest time at Bolder Advocacy. On this episode, we bring you three of your questions to answer on the pod... it's another round of Ask Us Anything, Electionpalooza Edition! Lawyers for this episode Tim Mooney Susan Finkle Sourlis Monika Graham Shownotes - Question: Presidential campaigns working with outside groups on door-to-door canvassing for their get-out-the-vote efforts— is this illegal coordination under federal election law? - Answer: - Base coordination rules - Exception to coordination rule: FEC AO 2024-01 states that scripts and canvassing literature are NOT public communications, and therefore consulting with candidates and parties is not illegal coordination. - Both presidential campaigns are doing this, with one reportedly relying on it more than the other. - This practice is likely happening in many federal races (Senate and House). - Important: This is NOT available for 501(c)(3)s or for state/local candidates - Question: Can 501(c)(3) organizations comment on candidates or political parties in the context of an election? - Answer: - Yes, but tread carefully. - 501(c)(3) organizations must remain nonpartisan. - Comments should have an independent, nonpartisan, non-election-related reason. - Focus on the issue, not the candidate (e.g., correcting factual errors without discussing the candidate's attributes). - Before responding, consider: 1. Decide who speaks on behalf of the organization. 2. Script responses to stay on message and avoid crossing any lines. 3. Avoid discussing qualifications or endorsing/opposing candidates. - Example: Instead of “Voters should reject this misinformation,” say “Americans won't stand for misinformation on public health issues.” - Criticizing or praising incumbents is less risky, but avoid implying support or opposition for re-election. - Question: Can nonprofit staff support candidates and express their opinion? - Answer: - Individuals have the right to participate and voice their own opinions when acting in their individual capacity. - 501(c)(3) organizations must remain nonpartisan. This applies to staff, board members, and volunteers when acting on behalf of the organization. - In official organizational events, staff should not engage in partisan activities (e.g., wearing a pro-candidate t-shirt). - In their personal time, employees can: - Participate in partisan election activity at home, online, or at rallies. - Use their own resources (email, social media) and must act outside work hours. - Put up lawn signs but not use them as Zoom backgrounds for organizational calls. - Canvas for candidates on the weekends but not encourage others during the workweek. - Every nonprofit needs a policy outlining the prohibition of using organizational resources for political activities. - Alliance for Justice has an example of such a policy. "Hello everyone, I have an exciting update! I've decided to change the name of our challenge from the 'Decluttering Challenge' to the 'Simplify Your Life Challenge.' The reason for this change is simple—I've realized that the word 'decluttering' is a bit tricky for me to say, and I want to make sure everything is as smooth and simple as possible for all of us.But don't worry, the focus of our challenge remains the same! We are still committed to helping you clear out the unnecessary, create more space, and make room for what truly matters in your life. The 'Simplify Your Life Challenge' is all about finding joy in simplicity and bringing more peace and happiness into your daily life.Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I can't wait to continue exploring ways to simplify and enhance our lives together!"" Intro:"Welcome to Day 4 of our 30-day Simplify Your Life challenge! Each day, we begin with a meaningful quote, reflect on a question, and then I'll share my personal thoughts. The goal is to inspire you to think about the things in your life that may be weighing you down and how to let go of them."开场白:“欢迎来到我们30天清理杂物挑战的第4天!每天,我们会从一句有意义的名言开始,反思一个问题,然后我会分享我的个人想法。目标是激励你思考生活中可能会拖累你的事情,以及如何放下它们。”Quote:"Today's quote is:'Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.'This quote encourages us to think about the choices we delay making, which can often lead to clutter in our lives."名言:“今天的名言是:Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.'『杂物不过是推迟的决定。』这句话鼓励我们思考那些我们推迟做出的选择,这些选择往往会导致我们生活中的杂乱。”Question:"Let's explore today's question:'Are there any possessions you're holding onto out of guilt or obligation?'"问题:“让我们来探讨今天的问题:“Are there any possessions you're holding onto out of guilt or obligation?”『是否有一些你因为内疚或责任而保留的物品?』”Lily's Answer:"Yes, actually, I have some papers from the health insurance bureau at home. I am responsible for paying a certain amount of money I owe. These papers have codes for me to scan and pay, but now, as I'm writing this, I realize I can actually throw away the papers by just transferring the money to the bank account they provided me. This simple realization shows how sometimes we hold onto things unnecessarily, just because we haven't made a decision."“是的,实际上我家里有一些来自健康保险局的文件。我需要支付一些欠款,这些文件上有一些可以扫描支付的代码。不过,当我写这些的时候,我突然意识到,我其实可以直接把钱转到他们提供的银行账户上,然后把这些文件丢掉。这个简单的领悟显示出,有时候我们只是因为尚未做决定而不必要地保留了一些东西。”Call to Action:"Now it's your turn! Think about the things you're holding onto because of guilt or obligation. It could be old letters, unused gifts, or documents that you think you need to keep. Take a moment to consider if they are truly necessary or if you can find a way to let go of them. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Please share them on our social media platforms or in the comments below this episode. Let's work together to clear the clutter and make room for what truly matters."行动呼吁:“现在轮到你了!想想那些你因为内疚或责任而保留的物品。它可能是旧信件、用不上的礼物,或者你觉得需要保留的文件。花点时间考虑它们是否真的必要,或者你是否可以找到一种方法放下它们。我很希望听到你的想法和经历。请在我们的社交媒体平台或这集节目的评论区分享。让我们一起清理杂物,为真正重要的事情腾出空间。”Special Offer:"If you're looking for more guidance on how to declutter your space and life, join my online Simplify your Life program. Florence, Italy Part 1 Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest's 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide The FAQ is: My friend Jean asked about recommendations for the best rental car deals. Today's Destination is Florence, Italy. Part 1 Today's Misstep- Legal troubles: I was caught in Florence without a bus ticket and fined 42.5 euros. Travel Advice: Bring an umbrella for shade FAQ: My friend Jean asked for recommendations for the best rental car deals this year. She says it used to cost more if you picked it up at the airport, but now it's the opposite. She's asking for the best deals, whether AAA, Sam's Club, Expedia, Kayak, Booking, etc. They all seem extra high to her. Answer: Yes, the car rental business is doing well these days. I remember when, during COVID-19, I booked a car in Denver for eight days for $32. No longer is that the case. My best thing is to shop around and keep shopping. Finding your best deal may take a few or even 30 minutes, but it's worth waiting. I have used all the options mentioned here, plus Turo, which is like Airbnb for cars. They all have plusses but check to ensure you have the car you need a few days before you travel. I just checked with my Turo for next weekend in Ohio, and the host says the car was in an accident, so it's unavailable, but Turo did not inform me. So, I contacted Turo, and they helped me re-book a different car. Expect prices to be high in peak times like summer and holidays and destinations like Chicago. Consider cutting the number of days you're renting your car, so only for the days you need it, and use public transportation, Uber/Lyft, or walking on the other days if possible. This year's Easter Monday saw Samantha's kid get into a bike park accident in Cape Town, requiring emergency stitches at a local hospital. Because it was a public holiday and the admin staff was off work, the administrative officer promised to send them the paperwork. Driving to the hospital after three weeks, she was told to leave her email address and the report would be emailed to her. She was informed she'd need to pay R850 for a report signed by a doctor or R350 for a clinical report completed by a nurse after yet another lengthy delay. Luke 10:25-37 (NIV) // On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,' he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Embracing relationships with our heart and soul includes loving our neighbor. Who Is My Neighbor? Leviticus 19:18 // “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. The Answer: Our neighbor is anyone we encounter regardless of their race, beliefs, or actions. Do I Have To Love Them? Luke 10:27 // He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” The Answer: Yes! We show our love for God by the way we love people. Loving our neighbor is reflective and responsive. How Do I Love My Neighbor? Luke 10:27 // He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” The Answer: We should love our neighbor practically and sacrificially. Ephesians 5:29 (NLT) // No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. Our challenge: See a need, meet a need.

AQUINAS ON THE EUCHARIST QUESTION 73 INTRODUCTION Hey patreons of the Catholic Man Show, Karlo Broussard here. I'd like to welcome you to this course on Aquinas and the Eucharist where we'll be looking at what Aquinas says about the Eucharist in his Summa Theologiae, tertia pars, questions 73-83. I'd like to thank Adam and David for this opportunity to share the course with you, which is a token of their appreciation for your support of the show—a support that I would strongly encourage you to continue in. I think you're going to enjoy going through this course on the Eucharist because Aquinas has some great things to say about it. And, of course, it's always to geek out on this stuff. I hope that you have as much fun as I will have teaching it. Aquinas divides his treatment of the Eucharist into seven major themes or aspects of the Sacrament and treats each with one or several different “Questions,” which are basically further subpoints to make about those major aspects. And each of these Questions are further divided into articles, or what Aquinas calls, “points of inquiry.” Each of the lessons for this course will ordinarily deal with a single question. But there will be times when we have to divide a question into two lessons in order to do justice to it. For example, Question 75 is so packed and dense that we'll need two lessons to do it justice. The methodology that I'll use is simpe: read the text and offer commentary as we go. Some things can be received upon an initial reading. Others, however, not so much. Sometimes there is a need for further commentary. And I'll do my best to provide that for you. Also, my goal is to outline Aquinas's thought in a way that easily digestible, giving summaries of the various arguments with premises and conclusions. I know it helps me to keep track of exactly what Aquinas is saying because it makes explicit what Aquinas often is saying implicitly. Now, before we begin diving into Question 73 in this lesson, it's important that we look at Aquinas's outline of the material that he will be going through on the Eucharist. Aquinas says there are seven major aspects of the Eucharist to consider: The sacrament itself (Question 73) Its matter (Questions 74-77) Its form (Question 78) Its effects (Question 79) The use or receiving of the sacrament (Questions 80-81) The minister (Question 82) The rite of the sacrament (Question 83) In this lesson, we'll start with Question 73, which deals with the sacrament itself. It's divided up into 6 articles, or as Aquinas puts it, “six points of inquiry.” ARTICLE 1: Is the Eucharist a sacrament? Commentary: What is a sacrament? A sense perceptible sign that effects what it signifies. So the question here is: Does the bread effect what it signifies, namely, the body and blood of Jesus? Aquinas's Answer: Yes [An appeal to authority] “On the contrary, It is said in the Collect [*Postcommunion "pro vivis et defunctis"]: "May this Thy Sacrament not make us deserving of punishment." [Aquinas's own reasoning] “I answer that, The Church's sacraments are ordained for helping man in the spiritual life. But the spiritual life is analogous to the corporeal, since corporeal things bear a resemblance to spiritual. Now it is clear that just as generation is required for corporeal life, since thereby man receives life; and growth, whereby man is brought to maturity: so...

Hang on, what's the question? Why is everyone talking about regenerative farming, for starters. For fibre as well as food. #regenag is fashion's new favourite hashtag. What if we put back more than we took out? Stopped drenching the land with toxic chemicals? Worked in harmony with Nature? Could we feed and clothe the world if we produced less, and differently? Would we starve? Would prices skyrocket? How did we get to this place, where no one - not the land, not biodiversity, not the nutritional content of food, and not the farmers who are on the front lines - wins?Oh, and have you heard the one about there being just 60 cycles of soil left on Planet Earth? That's no joke. While this oft-quoted stat has been disputed, there's no denying that intensive, so called "conventional" farming practices are depleting soil health the world over.During WWI, food shortages had us in a panic. No wonder, in the 1950s and '60s, we were obsessed with maximising yields. Through a combination of hectic new pesticides and herbicides, cheap synthetic fertilisers, and tearing out trees and hedgerows to make managing monocrops easier, farmers produced so much, there was plenty to spare - and waste. But the bonanza couldn't last forever...Today, they are experiencing a backlash. Once celebrated for filling our plates, farmers now find themselves vilified for destroying our environment. That many are the very same people who remember when everyone loved and respected them, and are only doing what governments and consumers said they wanted, is not often discussed. Can regenerative farming save them, and our soils?Sarah Langford is the author of Rooted, How Regenerative Farming can Change the World. She's also a farmer herself, although she didn't start out that way. This episode revolves around Ken Blanchard's words from ep. 86, which states that "Great leaders are great because people trust and respect them, not because they have power."Tod Bolsinger and Markus Watson explore the idea that true greatness is achieved through earning trust and respect, rather than relying on authority or position of power. They also discuss the importance of adaptive leadership, the need for transformation, and the role of trust in leadership.Overall, the conversation reflects on the idea of servant leadership modeled by Jesus, where true greatness is measured by the impact one has on others.Tod Bolsinger and Markus Watson discuss this quote from Ken Blanchard in Episode 86: Leading Like Jesus."Great leaders are great because people trust and respect them, not because they have power.” Ep. 86 is a conversation about Ken Blanchard's book, Lead Like Jesus.TIMESTAMPED OVERVIEW: [00:02:46] Trust is essential in adaptive leadership to lead people through transformation, but it's not enough. Leaders need to empower and enable their followers to reach their full potential. [00:05:02] Leadership is about gathering people together and collaborating on what needs to be learned and where to go. The leader's role is to name the transformation process that everyone, especially the leader, will go through. Q&A:1. Can anyone be a "great" leader?Answer: Yes, almost anyone can be a great leader in the sense of earning trust and respect from those being led.2. What is the importance of trust in leadership?Answer: Trust is built on technical competence and relational congruence, and is key to effective leadership and taking people through the transformation process.3. What is necessary for transformation besides trust?Answer: People must be empowered, cared for, and enabled to become all that God wants them to be.4. What is true greatness according to this episode?Answer: True greatness is measured by the impact one has on others, their respect and trust, not by power, acclaim, platforms, clicks, or likes.Learn how to lead your church into ministry that matters. What is free diving? Ref: Free Diving Safety Answer: Free diving is an activity that involves diving underwater without the aid of scuba diving equipment, but instead, relying on one's ability to hold their breath and adapt to high pressure underwater. 2. What is the process involved in free diving? Answer: The process involves a state of deep meditation to connect the mind, body, and breath. It involves getting a feeling in the body to confirm readiness and experiencing a mammalian dive reflex, which results in a 30% drop in heart rate when immersing the face in water. 3. What attracts people to free diving? Answer: Many free divers are drawn to the sport due to the sensory deprivation it offers. The sport also requires a lot of respect for the body and its ability to adapt to the demands of the sport. 4. What is the connection between ADHD and free diving? Answer: ADHD is highly represented in free diving. Many free divers with ADHD are drawn to the sport's calming effect and the sensory deprivation it offers. 5. Can free diving be a solo activity? Answer: Yes, free diving can be a solo activity, and the responsibility for success or failure rests solely on the diver. 6. What is the movie La Grand Blue about, and why is it significant? Answer: La Grand Blue is a movie about a free diver who can slow down his heartbeat and go as deep as he wants. It is one of Luke Basal's best films and launched the career of Eric Sierra and Jean Renault. 7. How does free diving compare to skydiving? Answer: Both skydiving and free diving require a lot of preparation work before the activity. The speaker puts a lot of effort into checking their gear before skydiving and even dreams about it. 8. What is the connection between risk-taking and neurodiversity? Answer: The speaker shares a love for risk-taking with their son. They both enjoy taking risks, but they are careful when doing so. This high appetite for risk-taking is much higher than the average person. 9. How was the speaker's son diagnosed with developmental issues? Answer: The speaker's son was diagnosed with developmental issues by a specialist in Singapore who observed his high energy and sensory needs. 10. Why is silence important to the speaker in free diving? Answer: The speaker experienced silence for the first time in their life when they first went underwater, and they are addicted to the quiet. The feeling of deep pressure on their body when diving is also compared to a welcoming hug. — TRANSCRIPT via Castmagic.io and then corrected.. somewhat, (Ooh-ooh! Fourth and likely final trial run is today June 7, 2023. #gen_AI_for_whut?? Peter Shankman [00:00:40]: Ladies and gentlemen, good morning from wherever in the world you happen to be. And welcome to their episode of Faster Than Normal. My name is Peter Shankman. It is 5:30 in the morning when I am recording this, which can only mean one thing. We are talking to someone and interviewing someone on the other side of the world, because otherwise I'd be on my bike right now. I want you guys to meet Suzy Malseed. Suzy is with us today, who is a high energy mom of twins, or Mum, as she puts it, which cold give you some idea of where we're talking to get this. She's a competitive free diver. I cannot wait to talk about that! She's a farmer, a reformed teacher, a neurodiversity advocate. She is based in Australia. Her two kids have ADHD. She's originally from New Zealand. She believes she has ADHD. She's a ferocious appetite for adventures and travel, having lived in six countries and worked and stayed in many more. Susie, good evening. Where you are. Good morning from where we are! Suzy [00:01:26]: Hello, Peter!! How are you? Peter Shankman [00:01:28]: It is great to have you back on the podcast. Love to talk with this. I found you because I started following you on Instagram because your Instagram is just you free diving, which is just some cool stuff. So I'm a huge fan. So thanks for taking the time today. Suzy [00:01:42]: Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. Peter Shankman [00:01:44]: So there are a lot of topics here I want to cover. Both your children, ADHD, were they diagnosed? If so, where? If so, how? How old are they? Let's start the so. Suzy [00:01:55]: Yeah, my kids are twins and they were diagnosed pretty young, particularly my son. So he was diagnosed first, which is kind of often the case because girls present a little differently. And he was diagnosed pretty early, pretty easily, pretty obvious, if you know what I mean. Right, Add? It wasn't necessarily something that I sort of went to the doctors and said, look, I think we've got some challenges. It was actually more because they were twins and because they were a little bit premy and we were living in Singapore at the time. Oh, wow. Yeah. And so singapore is amazing. It tends to be a little bit more on the clinical side, so they're very good at tracking and than sort of thing. So they were tracking growth and checking up a lot of things. And it was actually only in quite a routine sort of pediatric appointment when the specialist just saw my son literally bouncing and just said and I just said, oh, no, he's got high energy. I have too. And they just said, yeah, but there's energy and then there's energy. And I just went, oh, okay. Anyway, so we went there with Max pretty quickly, and it helped him a lot, to be honest, because it helped us to understand his sensory needs. That was probably the biggest thing that we had to get our heads around, is his sensory needs. He was very sensitive, so there was a lot of sort of putting his fingers in the ears and high pitched noises. He was very aversive to those sort of things. But he was also a sensory seeker, so he would love contact. He would love heavy contact. And once we understood that, we could do a lot of OT him. And we did a lot of physical work with him. I ran everywhere with him, on him, a scooter and a skateboard in the pool from a very young age, and his body just responded just so well to that heavy work. So I'm very grateful for understanding…. Peter Shankman [00:03:49]: Interesting. You said than you're undiagnosed, but you probably have it like most parents when their kids are diagnosed. That's how you figured out. You're like, Wait, this sounds like me 100%. Suzy [00:04:01]: I mean, as I was reading reading to learn more, to understand how to advocate for my son, I just sort of went, oh, my God. Well, that's me. And it was sort of the risk taking type stuff. I've never really put it all together, but I'm a very high energy person. I always have been. I've always had a ridiculous appetite for risk, but not in a stupid way. So from the outside, it might look like you're doing crazy stuff, but I've actually thought about everything I've done before I've done it. But my appetite for risk is certainly much higher than the average person. And I saw it with my son as well. He would jump off very high things, but he knows how to land, and that's the difference, right? Little parachute landing, and he's just not scared of getting hurt. And I've had the same thing. I'm not scared of getting hurt, which is probably quite weird, but when you've lived your whole life in the same body, you don't really realize how strange it is until you sort of put it all together. And it's like peeling an onion. As you get older, you realize a little bit more every year. Peter Shankman [00:05:09]: I always think back to that great line in Shrek. Onions are like ogres. Oh, they smell. No, they have layers. But it's very true. It's a complicated peel. It's interesting. And I talk about this all the time, which is great segue into talking about free diving. I never felt any kind of sense of release until I did my first race, until I did my first skydive, until I did all these things that allowed me to get as much dopamine as I ever wanted than I was doing stuff that would get me in trouble in school. And it'd be a nice quick hit, but it'd always come with a punishment. So, yeah, when you find that thing, it changes everything. And I'm sure your kids figured that out. Suzy [00:05:46]: Oh, absolutely. And for me, when I was at school, I mean, being a female, it's different again, like, I was the class clown, like you sort of alluded to in your book and stuff as well. It's very similar. And I never realized that I was doing it. I wouldn't have said than I was doing it to get a laugh. I was just quite flippant, and my brain just goes so fast. I would think of things very quickly. And it did get me into a fair bit of trouble, of course, but yeah. And you do realize after a while I did figure out that I was chasing adrenaline. I didn't understand that I was also chasing dopamine. So there's been a lot more come out since. Every year we learn more. So that's an interesting bit to put together. Peter Shankman [00:06:26]: All right, speaking of dopamine, let us talk about free diving. How cool. I've never done it, but I actually can't. Funnily enough, I have something called a peritoneal shunt in my spine. I can't go below like 20ft or. Suzy [00:06:40]: I'll. Peter Shankman [00:06:42]: But let's talk about free diving. I first learned about free diving high, as I'm sure you're familiar with in the movie La Grande Blue. Yes, I saw that movie in college, Add. Holy shit. Did that just captivate the hell out of me. It started my love affair with Jean Renew. If you haven't seen La Grande Blue, it's one of Luke Basal's best films. Luke Basal is the guy who did the original of Fem Nikita. Not that American bullshit, but the original version, the French version. And La Grande blue launched Eric Sierra's career and launched Jean Renault's career as well. So I strongly encourage you to check out La Grand Blue. But it is about a free diver and who just has this incredible ability to go as deep as he wants and slow his heartbeat down like something like six beats a minute. The first question I want to ask it must be I'm sure the dope mean hit is amazing, but the silence must be incredible. Suzy [00:07:39]: Yes. This is the thing. When I first went underwater was the first time in my whole life I've ever experienced silence. Like, my whole mind just went quiet. And that is what I'm probably addicted to the most, is just the quiet. I just love it. And then there's also pressure. So you're familiar with every 10 meters of depth, there's an additional atmosphere of pressure on the body right. So when we're sort of walking around on the ground, we have 1 ATM of pressure on our body. When we go 10 meters below surface, we have two atmospheres of pressure. Every 10 meters past that is an additional. So if I dive to 30 meters, I have four atmospheres of pressure on my body. Four times the pressure that we experience on the walking around on the ground. Now that feels like a giant bear hug, basically. And the really interesting thing is you either like it or you don't like it, to be honest. And I love that feeling. It's deep pressure to me. It just feels like a big welcoming hug. And that's a sensory thing for sure. So I have a few head starts, I think in terms of my natural ability to be able to be very good at the sport, sort of just drew me in from the start because I've actually been helping other people along the way. And sometimes when I watch their journey, it seems so foreign to me because it was so different to my journey. So they tell me about how scary it is and they tell me all than and I'm just like I can see that they are scared, so it's their truth. But I don't understand it because I've never had any fear around free diving. For me, it's just the most beautiful sport you could ever do. Peter Shankman [00:09:24]: I think it's the same for Skydiving when I'm never more free. Because when I jump out of that plane, I only have two options. I'm going to live or I'm going to die. That's it. Yes. Suzy [00:09:34]: Quite a cool feeling, right? Peter Shankman [00:09:35]: It is. It's wonderful. It's the most free I'll ever be. Suzy [00:09:38]: Yeah. Peter Shankman [00:09:42]: So one of the things about Skydiving, I'm assuming it's the same with Freediving, is there is a not of prep work that goes into it. And a lot of for me, it's checking my gear, it's making sure that everything's right. The point where I have dreams about it. And my parents, once when they came to, they weren't too happy I was doing it. But when they first came to watch me, they told me were shocked at how meticulous I was because I was never that meticulous for anything in my life. And all of a sudden I'm here checking all my gear and I'm doing double check and triple check. So I'm curious, do you have routines before you go? You don't just jump in the water and dive. So do you have things that you do to sort of get your head right, to get into that zone to get ready to go? Suzy [00:10:24]: Yeah. The cool thing with free diving is we don't have a lot of gear. So that's pretty cool. Compared to scuba diving or technical diving. They have a lot of gear. They have all of that check check stuff. We don't have that. But obviously we have to go through our own process. The process that I go through is basically I would consider it. I was very deep meditation. So it is my way of connecting in my mind, my body and my breath. I get a feeling in my body and then I know I'm okay, I'm ready. Everything's like you just quieten down, everything. And then your heart rate flows. It's called a mammalian dive reflex. So every human gets this. When you hop in the water and immerse your face you'll get a 30% drop in heart rate. That's a given, right? Everyone gets that? Yeah. Peter Shankman [00:11:11]: Wow. When you're in the water say it again, say it again. Suzy [00:11:16]: So when you immerse your face in water you get a 30% drop in heart rate. Peter Shankman [00:11:22]: That is incredible. Why?! Suzy [00:11:24]: It's genetic. So it goes back to when we were little, whatever you think we were before. A little fishy somewhere along the line. Yes. It's called the mammalian mammal. Mammalian dive reflex. MDR. Yes, I've heard of that. Peter Shankman [00:11:39]: Okay. Suzy [00:11:39]: Yeah, no I know! Peter Shankman [00:11:40]: 30%. That's amazing. Suzy [00:11:42]: It's a big drop and so that's a real thing. So that sense of comfort and feeling like you're really supposed to be there comes over you. And then of course I suppose one of the other reasons I just love the sport so much is how much your body adapts is just you have so much respect for your body. So your body can adapt to pressure. Obviously we take one breath at the surface and that breath has got to carry us through all of the equalizations of our masks, our sinuses, our ears all the way down to the bottom and then all the way back. And the more you dive, the more you free dive, the more your body adapts to what you're asking it to do. And that happens with everything that we do, as you would know with your own body and your training. And free diving is perhaps an extreme example of that because when you take your breath on the surface and you leave, it's just you and it's like jumping out of a plane. It's just you. There's no one to blame, it's no one else, it's just you. And like you said to me, it's just so freeing. I go very silent and very quiet in that response. And are you good in emergencies and things like that. Like do you have that same sort of response where whenever everyone else panic. Peter Shankman [00:13:04]: I'm perfect in emergencies I'm terrible at real life. Suzy [00:13:07]: Exactly. Peter Shankman [00:13:08]: But throw an emergency there and I'm the guy you want. Suzy [00:13:11]: Correct? Yeah. And I'm exactly the same and I figured that out along my life as well. Everyone. And when I was a kid I used to tell myself, I don't know why, but I live in opposite land and that's just how I prioritize it on my head. So someone else would go yay, we're having a massive party. And I would go oh my god. Peter Shankman [00:13:28]: Exactly. Well you know, you just made me realize something. I think that part of that might be because when you're in an emergency, you don't have time for social anxiety. There's never any small talk in the emergency. Suzy [00:13:40]: True. Yeah. Peter Shankman [00:13:42]: I just realized that there's no small talk in emergency. It's get shit done now. Suzy [00:13:46]: Yes. And we can be who we really are, like instead of niceties. And the other one I wanted to touch with you is travel. So I know that you're a massive traveler and I'm the same and quite extreme stuff as well. Probably when I look back in it, I have an appetite for that. And I think it boils down to the same sort of really ridiculous survival instinct which I quite enjoy, which is basically you're only going to eat when you figure out how to go get the food that you want to get and how to make yourself understood. Peter Shankman [00:14:16]: That's kind of a cool thing very much. I love that. What else? What am I not asking you about? Freediving? I don't know enough about it to know what to ask you. What am I not asking? Suzy [00:14:29]: Okay, so I think that ADHD is quite highly represented in free diving, to be honest. When I consider other free divers and I look around I see a lot of people who are like me and I believe that we're all drawn to the sport for the same reason, which is like a form of sensory deprivation, if you know what I mean. A lot of times we're actually diving in black water and that freaks some people really out. But we just close our eyes and I suppose how do you do that? Well, you have to find a way to surrender. You have to understand than the more you relax, the better your dive will be, the more tense you are, the worse your dive will be. So you have to switch off and there really is no choice. And if anything happens when you're under the water like I've had a couple of little incidences along the way. I had this time when I was swimming through a wreck and it was a fun dive with some other free divers and as I was going through the wreck and coming up through the wheelhouse, the back of my fin came off and I was sort of like it just came over me. I'm like, oh my God, I'm 30 meters down. I've already been here for at least a minute and now I only have one fin. If I panic, I'm toast. And you just go through that process and you're like, right, I have to cross my legs to make you can picture yourself crossing your legs and than do the dolphin movement to make your one fin work and just get yourself to the surface fast. And you just know that you have no space for panic so you have to stay calm. Peter Shankman [00:16:10]: I'm panicking listening to that story and I get it. I mean, you're in a position like same thing with Skydiving. Knock on wood. I haven't had to use my reserve yet, 500 jumps, but I'm sure at some point I will and I'll know what to do. But yeah, I mean, I guess it's that premise of what is your other option? Right? There is no other option. Suzy [00:16:30]: That's right. There's no other option. Peter Shankman [00:16:32]: Add, it's interesting because we worry about I'm sitting here, I'm listening to you. I'm like, Jessa, Christ, it's 98ft underwater, and she loses a fin. And I'm thinking you can't stop to get it right. You just sort of have to let it go. And so, okay, do what you have to do. Right. And this is what you train for. Suzy [00:16:50]: That's right. Peter Shankman [00:16:51]: And again, there's no small talk. There's no, oh, what would you rather do? There's no oh, honey, I don't know. What do you want to eat tonight? No, it's get out. Yeah, right. So you make than work. No, it makes perfect sense. But Jessa, 98ft of door. It's it's so funny. The only thing that that really physically scares me to the point where I can't even watch it is these guys who do sunken wet cave diving where they wear the air and they go into these ridiculously tight. And there's always a story, like people who have died doing that. I'm watching them skirt through these caves that are like they have half an inch above them. They have to take off the air bottle and put it next. What is wrong with you people? Yeah, I'll go jump into a perfectly plane because I'm not going to get Stuck through the middle of the earth, Jessa. Peter Shankman [00:17:47]: But, yeah, I get the freedom. I totally get the freedom that you feel it. But again, Steven, free diving is more freedom because you're not stuck in between the middle of the earth. I don't know. Suzy [00:17:56]: That's right. Peter Shankman [00:17:57]: Anyway, I want to be respectful of your time. Suzy, this was amazing. What a great story. I really like to have you back, if at all possible. Next time I'm down under, next time in Australia, I'm coming to visit, no question about it. You can take me out of the water. Peter Shankman [00:18:09]: That would be awesome. Suzy [00:18:10]: Absolutely. Yeah. We've got some nice things. Peter Shankman [00:18:12]: Thank you so much for taking the time. I really, really appreciate it. Suzy [00:18:15]: Thank you, Peter. Sometimes, public officials don't behave the way we hope they will. Whether it's a conflict of interest, outright corruption, or even a criminal offense we have seen examples of government officials that break the trust of the people they serve. While some may find their way out of office at the next election or through impeachment, those options may not be available. On this episode, we tackle advocating for resignation when a problematic public official needs to step down now. Attorneys for this episode Natalie Ossenfort Tim Mooney Why would one advocate for resignation over something else? Lifetime tenures with no end of terms Impeachment processes aren't politically feasible Elections for the term are years away and the conduct is too egregious to wait out For 501(c)(3)s: Prohibitions on supporting or opposing candidates for public office Can my nonprofit call for the resignation of appointed or elected officials? The IRS has given no guidance on this, but we can make some informed calls based on parallel guidance Answer: Yes, almost without limit unless the call for resignation touches on limited or restricted activity Isn't this the same as supporting or opposing candidates? Not usually - no elections involved in a call to resign. Calls for resignation could be an election issue, however (tread carefully if a (c)(3)) Special caution should be exercised if advocating for resignation of an elected official (e.g. don't want to suggest who should (or should not) be elected to fill the position if resignation happens) Note this is very different than supporting a recall vote, which is an election and would therefore be prohibited activity for a 501(c)(3) Could this be lobbying? Only if there is a process where there is a vote of a legislative body and you advocate for a vote i.e. An oversight committee considers the conduct of a member and votes on a resolution call for expulsion, impeachment or resignation. Examples Calls in years past for President Trump to resign (sorry you'll have to be more specific) before and during impeachment(s) that did not support/oppose any votes on impeachment in the House or the Senate trial Calls for Justice Thomas to resign in light of discovery of unreported financial conflicts of interest. The Question: “Does God accept me as I am?” The Answer: “Yes, he does!” Romans 5:8 God acted first. There was nothing we did that moved him to respond. All of us, like everyone else, can be recipients of God's love by his grace alone. If we don't come to God as we are, we are denying the truth of why God acted through his Son Jesus to save us in the first place. Matthew 11:28 Jesus doesn't say, “Fix yourself,” and then come follow me. He invites his disciples to follow him as they are so that they can find peace and rest. 1 John 1:7-9 We need to be cleansed of our sins: both those done in the past and in the present. God promises to forgive us if we confess our sin. Hiding our sin only brings shame and further separation from God. We can get washed by the blood of Jesus only if we come to God as we are and confess our sins openly and honestly. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Christ changes everything: you are no longer the same. You can come as you are, but you can't leave as you were. You are “new”; let the old things be left behind.
