They explore how unstructured training can benefit athletes, the importance of race-like efforts, and the physiological aspects of cramping during long races. Additionally, they delve into the benefits of creatine supplementation for short, intense racing disciplines and its impact on performance.   Takeaways Peaking is not just for one day; it's a phase. Maintaining volume after peaking can enhance performance. Unstructured training can help athletes feel fresher and more confident. Cramping often results from fatigue rather than hydration issues. Incorporating race-like efforts in training is crucial for endurance athletes. Creatine can be beneficial for short, intense racing disciplines. Weight gain from creatine is often just water retention. Race experiences help athletes adapt to unknown challenges. Durability workouts can improve performance in long races. Fueling becomes more important during extended efforts.   Titles Mastering Peaking Methods for Endurance Athletes The Power of Creatine: Boosting Race Performance   Sound Bites "I feel way fitter and more confident now." Melanie Wilson is our very special guest tonight. Melanie likes to stay active and we love speaking with people like Melanie that are motivated to move. We learn that Melanie does a lot of fun things such as Zumba and ultimate frisbee, and triathlons, plus Melanie loves cycling. She started cycling with a group called Cycle chicks and was cycling all over and that's what really got Melanie going. When all the pieces of the puzzle came together Melanie planned to start triathlons in the Fall of 2016 but there was one problem, and that problem is she hates running. Even though running is not Melanie's cup of tea she did not let that stop her. She learned how to swim better and started training and built up her stamina to get ready. The Hampton Triathlon was going to be Melanie's first but due to an unfortunate accident, she had to wait until 2018 and do the Aboiteau Triathlon. When Melanie crossed the finish line she felt amazing and now has completed 8 more Triathlons. On June 25th of this year, Melanie has plans to complete her very own half Ironman, 70.3 total miles, with her own course, very cool. If this goes well Melanie would like to do a 70.3 Half Ironman race so this is a stepping stone to future events. Then we bring up the boot camps that Melanie does at Peak Fitness in Dieppe. Melanie has done nearly 350 in total but has stopped them, for now, to train for her Half Ironman but we have no doubt that she will start up again once her training subsides. Lastly, we chat about loom knit and how much Melanie enjoys this hobby and I ask her how in the heck she has time for this. We see some of her work and it's amazing, picture below. Melanie is very motivated and we can't wait to see what she is going to try next. https://www.facebook.com/messenger_media?thread_id=1314994597&attachment_id=490967366162843&message_id=mid.%24cAAAAAE5hOaWGwpfjVGAkVKYdOzpsCheck out our Facebook page and see who you know that we have chatted with.https://www.facebook.com/Motivate-To-Move-211714423589584

He is an EIT tutor who assists students preparing for careers in the police and defence forces. He works part time at Peak Fitness and Health as an instructor. Andrew had a back injury as a result of an unfortunate event when he was 17 years old. He went back to running after his recovery. Before joining the army, he worked as a mechanic and a farmer. [8:27] Starting Long-Distance Running Andrew was inspired to run across New Zealand to raise funds for children with cerebral palsy. He trained for around two months before he started running in December. The only requirement when taking part in long-distance running is to be physically fit. [11:24] Standing on the Starting Line  Andrew was thrilled to begin his run at Te Mata's Peak because there were many spectators. On day one, finishing the remaining 20 kilometres was a challenge as he continued to hurl. Throughout the first four days of the marathon, Andrew's body continued to cramp.  On the second day, Andrew overcame hurdles as he soothed his blistered feet and endured the burning heat. Running for an extended period causes your feet to swell. Before running a marathon, it is advisable to visit a shoe clinic.  [18:03] Andrew's Supportive Wife Andrew's wife, who is a nurse, has been there for him since he began running. She and Andrew work together to help children with cerebral palsy.  Athletes need the guidance and support of a professional or loved one as they train. [23:40] Coping with the Challenges of Running It doesn't matter how long it takes to finish a run. Instead, do what you can for the day. You can enjoy your run once you stop thinking of it as a race. We should commend people who put themselves out there for others, regardless of whether their initiative succeeds or fails. [33:01] Running for a Cause Andrew's marathon for cerebral palsy brought a large crowd from Auckland. He planned to gather $20,000 at the end of the marathon.  By the 12th day, he had already received half of the planned charity fund. Utilise the features of social media to encourage people to participate and support charity initiatives.  People who have the least usually donate the most because they understand the struggle.  [37:32] Preparing and Understanding Your Body  Andrew changed little in his diet, except for giving up coffee. Athletes need the right combination of protein and amino acids to perform well.  Listen to the full episode to know how amino acids can help you perform and recover better.  [43:13] Bouncing Back  Andrew completed his run across New Zealand in 40 days.  He admits missing the simplicity of marathoning now that he has to deal with the complexities of reality. Allow your body to recover and experience your accomplishment after completing a massive challenge.  [50:49] Valuable Lessons from Marathoning Don't be frightened to take on a tough challenge.  Learn to build a team. Look for someone who can help and motivate you. Seek advice from good people. Always celebrate small wins.  Failure is inevitable. You need to learn how to pick yourself up when you fall. [55:45] The Ultra Marathon Community In the marathon community, it doesn't matter who crosses the finish line first. Everyone encourages one another to get through the event.  The last person to cross the finish line is the toughest and has fought every obstacle known to man. 7 Powerful Quotes [23:42] Andrew: ‘I just got it through my head that it doesn't matter how long it took me to do 50k… It didn't matter. I could only do what I could do' [25:22] Lisa: ‘I don't care whether they make it or not make it… because people who are putting themselves out there on the line to do something epic and for good and for their own sporting achievement as well deserve to be congratulated for giving it their all.' [36:53] Lisa: ‘It does reinforce your belief in humanity because we can get pretty damn cynical in the world that we live in. You know how terrible things can be. Then, you get on the other hand, just amazing people doing amazing things. It's just giving and caring.' [46:15] Lisa: 'Please don't just dive into the next thing. Because you have this tendency when you come off the back of something epic that you've just done, and you've achieved, and you've done so well, to rush into something else because there's a big hole in your life.'  [46:49] Lisa: ‘That was the beautiful thing about ultra-marathon running. You only had one problem to solve that day and that was to get you across the finish line —5 0k's away. And that's a beautiful purity of purpose.'  [50:50] Andrew: ‘Don't be afraid to give it a go. But find someone to help you.' [52:54] Andrew: ‘Celebrate the small wins. Success breeds success.' About Andrew Andrew McCrory made a name for himself as a runner for children who couldn't walk. While trapped on his sofa for four months due to an accident, he had plenty of time to consider what he could do once he regained his strength. Thus, he began his campaign for kids with cerebral palsy. Since then, he's run thousands of kilometres in favour of the cause. His most recent accomplishment was running 50 kilometres for 40 days to raise money for children with cerebral palsy and need the costly Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery in the United States.  Apart from being an ultra-marathoner, Andrew is an instructor at Peak Fitness and Health and a Services Pathway Tutor at the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), where he prepares students for the field of law enforcement. Andrew is also a loving husband and father of two.  Learn more about Andrew's cause on Give a Little. We’re mixing it up a little bit on the show this week with a few of the Rebel Performance coaches joining me: Ryan Patrick, a physical preparation coach for athletes and powerlifters and the owner of Peak Fitness & Sports Training, Ryan L’Ecuyer, a strength coach with a primary focus on hypertrophy and bodybuilding, and Keiran Halton, a personal trainer and Brunswick HS Strength & Conditioning Coach and former Division 1 athlete. We’re first going to dive into our new Rebel Performance Training Team and the different program pathways and changes that will be offered in this new launch. I’m not lying when I say we have a program for everybody: those who want to be the total package or the fire breathers, those who are busy professionals, those who want to get swole, those who are a recovering athlete or want a modification of powerlifting, or those who want a little bit of everything and would like to try it all. I also brought the Rebel Crew on today to discuss core training misconceptions and what the core actually does from a functionality standpoint. Ryan L’Ecuyer and I start off by sharing why the core’s main purpose is to control the position of the rib cage and pelvis and how we can use those muscles to present good movement everywhere else; this will help us work the muscles we’re intending to work. Keiran then does a deep dive into how the core is your foundation and getting your core into a good position will 9 times out of 10 help clear up any pain and issues clients may have, and it will also allow them to actually feel the targeted muscle groups. Ryan Patrick discusses his take on keeping the diaphragm and pelvic floor stacked in order to get the hips and shoulders moving better, which will allow overall higher training volume. Listen in as the Rebel Crew shares their approach to different positions and breathing mechanics that may work for some, but not for others and understanding the difference. One of the approaches we do discuss is phasing in a mixture of different variations and traditional core exercises to create a happy medium for clients who enjoy seeing ab exercises in their programming. Ryan Patrick shares a general rule he typically follows, which is, “Give them what they want in the context of what they need.” We close out the episode by answering listener questions regarding nutrition, how biomechanics can impact physiology, and percentages for sprinting. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: [03:40] Rebel Performance Training Crew Intro and the Program Pathways They are Offering in This New Launch [22:09] The core’s true purpose is to control the position of the rib cage and pelvis [27:40] Keeping the diaphragm and pelvic floor stacked is a recipe for driving up your training volume [29:54] Much of "core" training is about creating appropriate timing and stiffness [41:18] Some of our go-to exercises to help you build a strong core [48:27] Listener questions like how do biomechanics impact physiology Links: Follow Ryan Patrick here: https://www.instagram.com/coachryanpatrick/ (https://www.instagram.com/coachryanpatrick/) Follow Peak Fitness & Sports Training here: https://www.instagram.com/peakfast/ (https://www.instagram.com/peakfast/) Follow Ryan L’Ecuyer here: https://www.instagram.com/lacurefit/ (https://www.instagram.com/lacurefit/) Follow Keiran Halton here: https://www.instagram.com/halton_performance/ (https://www.instagram.com/halton_performance/) Want to learn more about the Rebel Performance Training Team? Today’s guest is Ryan Patrick, record-holding powerlifter, physical preparation coach for athletes and powerlifters, and for the past ten years, owner of Peak Fitness and Sports Training in Erlanger, KY. Ryan is a very accomplished strength athlete in his own right who has won the Tactical Strength Challenge, not just once, but twice. This episode is a case study. Today we break down how Ryan helped somebody else (let’s call her “Heather”) win the same challenge. We dig into the nuts and bolts of the program and the plan that was given to help this individual get from point A to point B to achieve their desired results. We’ll also go into everything that held them back—the roadblocks and setbacks—both physically and mentally. We hope that this case study serves as a way for you to learn from the experiences and mistakes of another athlete. Not only will you have someone else on the journey to relate to, but you’ll also be able to glean actionable advice from their own journey. Listen in as Ryan dives deep into the mechanics of the Tactical Strength Challenge and the nine-week training program set up for Heather to win the Novice division. Ryan explains how he helped Heather, a relatively strong woman in her 40s, with reconditioning for the challenge in the wake of an extended facility closure due to COVID-19. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: [09:09] Heather’s current numbers and desired results coming into the challenge [14:44] Other big factors holding Heather back at the beginning [17:08] What the programming looked like [19:58] Heather’s prep work going into the gym [21:33] Gauging the number of back-off sets [23:14] After the EDM protocol [26:03] An example of a training day in the first three weeks [29:42] Progression into the next three weeks [33:11] The final three weeks [38:34] Heather’s final test numbers on competition day [40:15] Would Ryan have done anything differently during Heather’s nine-week prep? This week we welcome Ryan Patrick to the show to talk about training! We get into Ryan’s background, his experience being a part of the Silverback Project, concurrent training, and filling the buckets for high level athletes. Ryan has been the owner of Peak Fitness and Sports Training in Kentucky for 10 years, serving adult gen pop clients and high level professional athletes alike. Ryan has competed in powerlifting and in recent years has enjoyed training himself like an athlete, having met James through the beta version of The Silverback Project.  We first get into Ryan’s evolution as an athlete and coach. Having started off with a bodybuilding background in highschool and dabbling with training through college and post college, Ryan discovered powerlifting in 2014. While powerlifting helped rekindle his enthusiasm for training, he missed being an athlete and found himself not identifying with the idea that you’re washed up once your highschool playing days are over. Ryan ended up hopping on the very first Silverback Project in 2018 and jumped head first into transforming himself into a hybrid athlete. The concurrent model completely reframed how Ryan thought about training and how he now structures programming for himself and clients.  This leads us into getting into how Ryan is currently programming for some of his higher level pro athletes. Taking a page from Bill Hartman’s model, he starts with looking at the two different movement strategies of compression and expansion and how he can increase their options. With these athletes in particular, they already have exceptional abilities, so making improvements is a matter of filling the buckets and giving them what they need. With a limited amount of time to work with these guys, he is simply trying to find the low hanging fruit to get them ready for camp and avoid injury from a lack of preparation. He has them lifting 3 days a week with 2 days a week of lower intensity conditioning, and even one higher intensity conditioning day on Saturdays to coincide with their specific movement and agility based drills.  We transition to discussing the concept of “kangaroos vs gorillas” and Velocity Based Training when working with different athletes and deciding which qualities they need more of. With Ryan’s objective of making these already force based athletes a little bit faster, he trains them in zones more specific towards the velocity side of the curve so that they can learn to produce that force in as little time as possible. He makes sure to keep other variables such as rest periods consistent so that he’s getting a true reading of how much output the athletes are capable of and how much volume is appropriate.  We then talk about how he cooks in movement variability into a program without spending inordinate amounts of time laying around on the floor and potentially losing buy-in. With the NFL guys he works with, Ryan is looking to drive very specific adaptations so he will often use what could be called “redundant” training to layer on intensity as he’s trying to recapture movement capacity. This way he can still continue to build fitness qualities while getting athletes to recognize the similarities behind what they’re doing and how it will translate to ultimately making them better.  James then brings up the point of using the right exercises to plug the leaky holes so that you can funnel more energy into the things that truly matter. In this instance, when looking at what would be usually considered to be accessory based exercises, both of the guys agree that you want to be far more concerned with the quality of the movement and not necessarily trying to hit big personal records. This keeps “the goal the goal” while still keeping the training very challenging.  Next, Ryan breaks down how implements sprinting into his athlete’s programming. With his young athletes in particular, he believes that there needs to be an element of...

After hearing Skyler Tanner mentioned on multiple occasions by some of the world's top experts on exercise, I knew I had to find out more about him. After checking out his blog and watching a few of his seminars on YouTube, he blew my mind. This interview was no different. Skyler Tanner holds a Masters in Exercise Science, has been a high-level fitness and nutrition coach for 15 years, and has lectured at the Ancestral Health Symposium 2011, The 21 Convention, and Paleo FX.
