Forget the format wars! The Last Video Store is a VHS battleground set in a basement video store where the physical media is so physical, it can kill. Directed by Cody Kennedy & Tim Rutherford, and featuring an entertaining and charismatic performance from Kevin Martin, the film is a kooky Canuxploitation horror comedy with extra cheese and a dollop of heart. It had its world premiere on day 2 of Fantastic Fest, screening in its midnight section, and we're delighted to share its Q&A with you! Caution: You're entering spoiler territory. Christian Zyp interviews film historian/director Jason Pichonsky about the film THE AMITYVILLE CURSE from Canadian International Pictures. Jason did the commentary track on this release giving a tonne of insight into the film.THE AMITYVILLE CURSE deviates from series formula, to surprising, amusing, and unsettling effect. Handsomely shot by Rodney Gibbons (My Bloody Valentine) and based on a novel by famed parapsychologist Hans Holzer – who also wrote the source material for Amityville II: The Possession – this inspired oddity is full of memorable horror flourishes and moments of jaw-dropping weirdness. With a lively ensemble that includes Kim Coates (Innocent Blood), Cassandra Gava (Conan the Barbarian), Helen Hughes (The Incubus), and Jan Rubes (Witness), The Amityville Curse is essential Canuxploitation viewing.
Get ready for Audra, maniacs, because this week we're discussing the 1983 Canuxploitation slasher Curtains! Canadian International Pictures is a wonderful boutique Blu Ray label that is an OCN (Vinegar Syndrome) partner label. From arthouse to Canuxploitation, Canadian International Pictures (CIP) is devoted to resurrecting vital, distinctive, and overlooked triumphs of Canadian cinema. This label is focused on the country's original cinematic boom years – spanning the '60s, '70s, and '80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country's borders) to highlight the films of Canada's most inspired actors and filmmakers. While CIP is currently focused on Blu-ray, plans are underway to expand into streaming and theatrical. - Listen to the Chasing Labels episode with CIP: https://chasinglabels.podbean.com/e/chasing-labels73a-conversationw-jonathan-doyledavid-marriottco-founders-ofciplukas-moodysson-set-from-arrow-franconerosetfromradiancerun-man-run-an/ - CIP releases through OCN: https://vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/canadian-international-pictures CIP Website: https://www.canadian-international.com/about CIP Twitter: https://twitter.com/cipictures CIP Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CIPreleasing CIP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cipreleasing/ CIP YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWafNVjoPtBj3j9MlqVa6XQ - Become a patron here: https://www.patreon.com/DiscConnected - Like the page and follow on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/TheDiscConnected - Join me on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/thediscconnected/ - Or on Twitter: https://twitter.com/disc_connected - Email: DiscConnectedMedia@gmail.com -- Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/the-disc-connected - Podcast: https://thediscconnected.podbean.com - If you happen to be shopping on Amazon for something and would like to share some of Lord Bezos' profits with my channel at no additional cost to you, please consider shopping through my link: https://amzn.to/39mcX1t - Tip Jar: https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=TDEVSPJZ9EFCW or paypal.me/RVinls (friends and family only) or Amazon wish list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/20CR2ZN456P1B?ref_=wl_share - Music is by Michael J. The Smut Peddler is not amused by Django Nudo's bass player jokes. Shameless plug for the Jens Bådd special edition DVD combo package and JustWatch launch is imminent. Then we rock out big time to some of our favourite music films from the 60s, 70s and 80s.Wild Guitar (1962) - Arch Hall Jr might not have been anybody's idea of a rock idol, but his dad was a film producer, so this is how he got his rockin' start. He then went on to appear in The Choppers and The Sadist. Disk-O-Tek Holiday (1966) - One of the best preserved rock films, scanned from the original negative and starring 20 great performances by vintage rock acts culminating in an astounding "almost live" medley by Freddy Cannon and the Ramrods.Musical Mutiny (1970) - The multi-talented Barry Mahon directed this rock film about the ghost of a pirate taking over a theme park and staging a rock concert. Iron Butterfly perform on stage in this lunatic time capsule from an era long gone. Toomorrow (1970) - This bizarre sci-fi musical about a dying aliens seeking 'vibes' from a pop band on Earth was such a disaster that the lead, a young Olivia Newton-John, gave up acting for eight years, until her agent persuaded her to do Grease. Has to be seen to be believed. Rock'n'Roll Nightmare (1987) - Rock band practicing in isolated farmhouse get more than they bargained for when evil haunts the place and turns the band members into demons from hell. Based on the success of this Canuxploitation, director John Fasano would the following year go on to make: Black Roses (1988) - Metal band come to play in a small town. Conservative parents are won over, but wait until they see the band hypnotise their children into crazed murderous hordes. The demon band on stage looks like Finnish band Lordi. Hell′s Bells - the Dangers of Rock′n′Roll (1989) - Documentary warning about the dangers of the Devil's music - if the previous two films were not warning enough. Ola & Julia (1967) - A Romeo-Juliet story of singer meeting actress but their band/troupe don't get on. Stars real-life singer of Ola & the Janglers. Grejen (1966) and Drra på - kul grej på väg till Götet / A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Gothenburg (1967) - popular Swedish 60's band Lee Kings, joined in the latter film by a bunch of other popular Swedish bands (and comedians as their managers) who go on a madcap race from Stockholm to Gothenburg. Singing ensues. Under ditt parasoll / Under Your Parasol (1968) - The band Sven Ingvars went broke (literally) making this bizarre road movie-musical: promenade orchestra 1912, pop band with electric guitars and revolver duelling cowboys in Desperado City!Blödaren / The Bleeder (1982) - Female rock band ends up in an abandoned house with a psycho killer. Rockin' Spotify playlist here.

Every year, as Halloween approaches, Film Comment Co-Deputy Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute are forced to confront one of their greatest fears: horror movies. For this year's festivities, they invited two horror experts—Violet Lucca, web editor at Harper's Magazine, and Maddie Whittle, Programming Assistant at Film at Lincoln Center—to inflict some scary movies upon them. Violet and Maddie selected a couple underground favorites: Mohammed Shebl's bonkers 1981 Egyptian horror musical Fangs and Andy Milligan's low-budget sleaze-fest The Body Beneath (1970). As it turned out, these vampire outings aren't all that frightening, but they challenge and expand commonplace notions of horror cinema with their play with genre, sexuality, and political commentary. The group also talked about some other picks: Mahakaal, an '80s Bollywood remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, Sandor Stern's Canuxploitation classic Pin, and more.

If you're the kind of person who browses Canuxploitation or Bleeding Skull, you may perk up when you hear the name Emmeritus Production. The brainchild of Lionel Shenken, this Hamilton company churned out over 30 shot-on-video productions in the 1980s. For this episode, I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with Allan Levine, a Canadian film and television producer who directed two features for Emmeritus Productions (The Chronicle of 1812 aka The King's Regiment in 1984 and The Edge aka Doomsday Plot in 1985) and went on to have a long and fascinating career. We discuss how they got involved with Emmeritus Productions, what it was like to direct a shot-on-video, made-for-TV and the foreign market feature films, some amazing stories straight of the sets of Skull: A Night of Terror and Graveyard Shift, plus so much more. So much actually, that one day you might just see a sequel to this very interview. We'll see!For now, sit back and get ready for some truly untold tales from the world of Canadian low-budget filmmaking. Enjoy! For more information about Emmeritus you can read the Canuxploitation article about the company here, and special thanks to Cyd and Allan Levine for being gracious with their time and allowing me the opportunity to have this wonderful discussion!

Toronto-based writer and film critic Angelo Muredda joins the pod for a discussion of David Cronenberg's Canuxploitation classic Rabid (1977), a depiction of a horrifying viral epidemic sweeping the city of Montreal that is fascinating to reconsider today as we approach the one year anniversary of the start of lockdowns in Canada related to the real-world Coronavirus pandemic. We discuss Cronenberg's use of limited resources and the banality of seventies Canadian architecture and interior design to generate dread, his depictions of institutions and the scientist-monster heroes that serve as his usual protagonists, and we muse aloud about how Ontario Premier Doug Ford would respond if he had to preside over a Rabid-style pandemic. Plus: a discussion about the latest essay from Martin Scorsese: in a world of media conglomerates controlling public access to what they consider “content” and streaming services algorithmically determining what audiences should see next, what will this do to the art of cinema? Did Mark L. Lester, the man behind Commando, intend us to take Class of 1984 to be a satire of the overblown panic about violence in schools or a gravely serious warning about what he deemed an apathetic, dangerous next generation? Either way, it's an abject failure even if it does typify Canuxploitation. (Also, he definitely intended us to take it seriously)
David Bax remains the only I Do Movies Badly guest to actively pitch me topics and thus, he returns for the second time in three months to discuss some Canuxploitation films - or, less fun, "tax shelter films" - in which our neighbors of the Great White North used tax laws to create genre films that were precursors to American genre films in more ways than one. There is, of course, some talk about the impending NHL playoffs and why they're a stupid idea, wading into the waters of questioning if Hamilton is a "movie" or not, and, obviously, the recommendations: Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974), George Mihalka's My Bloody Valentine (1981), and Mark L. Lester's Class of 1984 (1982).
What better way to celebrate the holiday that you pretend to not care about? Alison, Josh, and Brady dissect two lovely holiday pictures - Garry Marshall's ensemble cast rom-com Valentine's Day (2010) and Canuxploitation slasher classic, My Bloody Valentine (1981). Plus! Childhood crushes on cartoons, Valentine's day cards, and plenty of romance novel chat to leave you hot and bothered.
FANS: Actress and L.A. clown scene staple Helene Udy is our bloody valentine this week, as we talk about her roles in early Canadian genre films, meeting and working with Jim Carrey on the set of his first film Rubberface, her stint as Myra on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, the weird and wild world of clowns and cabarets, upcoming indie horror projects, and much more! FILMS: Helene Udy was Sylvia in our film our of the week: My Bloody Valentine (1981), and boy does she love this movie! We reminisce without her about her penchant for screaming, Moosehead Lager, the practical locations of Nova Scotia, the Gordon Lightfoot-esque 'Ballad of Harry Warden,' the surprisingly unpredictable answer to the whodunit mystery, the lack of a sequel, and the sheer Canadian branding that exudes from this wonderful early slasher. FINDS: RIP Kirk Douglas and talk of The Final Countdown (1980), Goliath Season 4 news, Brandon Cronenberg's new body horror film with Sean Bean, Chris Rock & Samuel L. Jackson in Spiral (2020), the new entry in the Saw series + JLo's butt.
FANS: Actress Kristine DeBell joins us to talk about casting, the sheer lunacy of the 70s and 80s, SAG, working with the likes of Jackie Chan & Richard Gere, and roles in films like Robert Zemeckis' I Wanna Hold Your Hand and numerous titles from David DeCoteau. And, of course, we discuss her role as A.L. in Meatballs! FILMS: Our favorite C.I.T., A.L. (too many acronyms?), sits in with us for our review of the summer camp classic Meatballs (1979) that launched the film careers of Bill Murray and Ivan Reitman with suprisingly box office-smashing results. We talk Spazz, steamed weenies, summer camp stories and wacky soundtracks before sending this up the flagpole for review on the Cult Filmometer. FINDS: Pasasite in black and white, thoughts on the pilot for Star Trek: Picard, new Disney+ series for Willow and The Mighty Ducks in development, 911 spinoff with Rob Lowe debuts, The Karate Kid Musical and more!

If you put Carrie, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Degrassi Jr. High into a blender, the film smoothie that you'd pour out would look suspiciously like Prom Night 2. When Michael Ironsides accidentally kills his horrid, abusive girlfriend with a stink bomb, her soul gets trapped in a piece of luggage. Twenty-fiveish years later, a plain-Jane blonde girl named Vicky, with an abusive uptight religious mother (and father who is only there to repel any copyright claims from Stephen King), finds said soul-trunk and opens it, freeing fifties bad-girl/burn victim, Mary Lou. Mary Lou's ghost keeps swiping at poor Vicky and missing, like a monster in an Abbot and Costello film, until she finally drowns her in a chalkboard, taking over her body. Once she's in there, it's nothing but fifties style heavy-petting and prom preparations. Oh, also, murder. Will Vicky be spared? Will she get to keep her prom sash? Will the principal of this school face any consequences for shooting one of the children in front of an entire auditorium full of witnesses? Join Matt and Tristan as they walk nude through the Canadian locker room of 1987's Canuxploitation classic, Hello Mary Lou : Prom Night 2.
We figured you folks deserved a bonus episode after Clearly Canadian 2: Canuxploitation! Join us as we discuss our favorite Canadian television shows, and we apologize in advance for not mentioning Anne of Green Gables at all. Feel free to shame us for that if you like.
Canuxploitation comes to an end as we discuss the post-apocalyptic action adventure film, Supergrid. In the near future, there's a vast wasteland that only a few brave souls will traverse, know as the Supergrid. Tasked with delivering a secret package across the grid, Deke and his estranged brother will have to fight off bandits, scavengers, and gangsters to complete their mission.
Imagine finding out that you're a werewolf, and even more than that, there's a whole town of werewolves who know more about your family history than you. Canuxploitation continues as we get good and spoiler with Wolves. After young Cayden Richards (Lucas Till) discovers his parents brutally murdered, he's instantly pegged as the culprit, and realizes that he's something not quite human. Forced to go on the run, he finds his way to the town of Lupine Ridge, which has more than its fair share of secrets, and townsfolk who are just like him.
Canuxploitation gets a whole lot bloodier this week, as we discuss the thriller American Mary. Mary (Katherine Isabelle) is an ambitious med student who's struggling to make ends meet. But after a chance encounter puts her surgical skills on display, she quickly finds herself a sought-after commodity among members of the body modification community, and she'll do anything to protect her reputation. . .

We're back! It's a HOLIDAY MIRACLE! After a two month hiatus, No-Budget Nightmares returns with the 1987 Canuxploitation oddity BEYOND THE 7TH DOOR, starring the unforgettable (and unintelligible) Lazar Rockwood! Our hero, joined by a cocktail clad - and much more competent - lady-friend chainsmokes his way through SEVEN DEADLY ROOMS in order to unearth some hidden treasure, but will his greed get the better of him? I'm betting YES! It's a grand old time all around, so time to stop shopping for the kids and start LISTENING.

Analog Jones continues their America month! This week we dip our toes into Canuxploitation with a horror/thriller/mystery called American Nightmare from 1983. This is a movie that was made in Toronto, which is pretending to be in Chicago and looks more like New York! We can’t be too hard on this B-movie that was made for $200,000 in 1981 from the creator of Prom Night, Paul Lynch, because it gave us a baby faced Michael Ironside. Directed by Don McBrearty and starring Dawrence Day, Lora Staley, Alexandra Paul and Michael Ironside (the greatest Canadian on Earth). How much do we LOVE Michael Ironside?! We did a top 3 Michael Ironside list because we are nerds, ENJOY! Thank Jason… it’s PROM NIGHT and everything is alright - kinda - with this singular Canuxploitation slasher classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Leslie Nielsen and “the oldest teenagers since Grease.” And our date for the special episode? Why it's Janel Schermerhorn, the very woman Patrick took to his own senior prom! Oh, and the truth comes out!! Along the way we wait in vain for the eventual disco-pocalypse, discuss why a dead body would be retrieved by a rope truck, dig into the reason why every Canadian couple wants to have sex in a locker room, propose a Prom Night/9-to-5 crossover and bare witness to “man-on-van combat.” We also delve into a wild Prom Night fan theory to begin and end them all! Melissa Sue Anderson was eager to break out of the house that Michael Landon built when she signed on for 1981's slasher Happy Birthday to Me. She was still screaming and crying but this time it was from trying to avoid being shish kebabbed by a mysterious killer and not from the trials of prairie life. She was joined by tough guy film legend Glenn Ford as her psychiatrist, Canadian stalwart Lawrence Dane as her preoccupied Dad, future soap superstar Tracey Bregman as her best friend and fledgling actors Lisa Langlois, Lesleh Donaldson, Matt Craven and David Eisner who would all go on to healthy careers. Dan and Vicky discuss Happy Birthday to Me's place in slasher history and how it's twisty and convoluted plot was a departure for the genre. They also take a look at the minor controversy that greeted the film when it premiered on DVD in 2005 and how the Canadian government's tax system of the era inadvertently gave rise to the beloved horror subgenre affectionately titled Canuxploitation. There's a tribute to the late Wes Craven, a look at the music of May 1981 (Sheena Easton and Kim Carnes lovers take note) and some Straight Out of Compton love. Hot Date 11: Happy Birthday to Me! You're all invited to Dan and Vicky's party! Blow out the candles and cut the cake.
