During the adidas Three Stripe Skate Hype event in Shanghai, we had J Brian Siswojo a.k.a. JBS, the founder of 8five2 skateshop in Hong Kong, swing by our office. We chatted about his story and the skate scene in Hong Kong. It's just like Brian said in the podcast: 'Skateboarding is not for everyone, we are the chosen ones.' 00:20 Introducing J Brian Siswojo, JBS (Just BullShit)@jbs8five2 . 04:20 adidas Skate Hype event and Xuhui Binjiang Spot in Shanghai. 07:55 He moved to Hong Kong with his family in 1985 when he was 11 years old. That's where he learned English. He can speak English, Indonesian, Cantonese, Mandarin, a bit of Japanese, and a little Korean (his wife's Korean). 08:57 The pioneers of skateboarding in Hong Kong, the first and second generation who paved the way. 10:40 Stories with the legendary skate artist VCJ 13:20 Back in 1991, Hong Kong got its first skater-owned shop, BFD (which stood for Big Fucking Deal!). 14:15 Here's some behind-the-scenes trivia about the skate scene in Jackie Chan's 1993 movie City Hunter. They brought in ten big-name pro skaters from the US for the shoot, but on the day, director Wong Jing was being such a pain that the skaters just walked off! They had to scramble and find local skaters from Hong Kong to fill in and finish the filming. 17:33 Skateboarding is not for everyone, we are the chosen one. 19:15 The founding of 8five2 skateshop back in 1999. This year is their 25th anniversary! They've got a collab with NB Numeric dropping soon, and they're also doing a clothing collection with the Japanese brand Muraspo. 23:50 Funny story of how he met Tim O'Connor. 29:04 Inside joke “IN THE CLUE” 30:05 Stories about two pair of 8five2 X NikeSB Janoski collaboration shoes. 37:55 Hong Kong needs some fresh blood!
This week we are back with everyone's favorite Kung fu superstar, Jackie Chan, and one of his MANY Chinese New Year releases- City Hunter! An absolutely wacky, over the top, action extravaganza, filled wall-to-wall with Wong Jing's trademark irreverent humor, this manga adaptation is one of the most unique entries in Jackie's long and storied filmography. With a great supporting cast, including the always talented Gary Daniels and one of the best “gwei-lo” baddies of all time, Richard Norton, there is enough solid martial arts action mixed in with the slapstick scenarios to keep the hardcore fight fans engaged throughout it all! Listen in as we break down why we like this movie so much, how different it is from the rest of Jackie's body of work, and why you should check it out asap! Also, just as a heads up, we recorded this about 2 weeks ago or so now as we decided to pivot and release an episode on Action Jackson instead last week in honor of Carl Weathers
Wong Jing's 2022 remake of his 1993 Wuxia epic, Kung Fu Cult Master (Pt 1) is proof that practice makes progress. 30 years of experience gives you special effects, less toilet humor, a wizened Donnie Yen and an actual, honest to god filmed and released sequel (Kung Fu Cult Master (Pt 2) released in the same year.
Wong Jing's 1994 Lone Wolf parody, New Legend of Shaolin, or Red Dragon as its known in the west, teams up Jet Li with his martial arts prodigy on screen son Mo Tse to kick some old school poison boogie man ass.
The Magic Crystal is Wong Jing's 1986 first collaboration with Hong Kong Heartthrob Andy Lau, in his most fetching, handsome Puma activewear. This is a globetrotting adventure quest movie equal parts Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Armour of God, E.T., the list goes on - the amazing thing is, its actually pretty good and unequivocally Wong Jing in style. Also, Cynthia Rothrock and the enigmatic Richard Norton share about 20-30% of the screen time, every moment to be relished. If you know Wong Jing and/or his work, you know what to expect here, puerile humour, good production values and effects and some actually genuine surprising and rousing moments (looking at you Wei-Wei Huang). It also has every Wong Jing issue with it, pacing, 2D characters, juvenile…but it stays entertaining.Come for the Cynth-ard Nort-rock, stay for the amazing action set pieces and stuntman (and women) action! Listen in with us!

This week, Michelle Yeoh teams up with director Wong Jing on the absolutely insane wuxia action film HOLY WEAPON! Also starring Maggie Cheung, Damian Lau, Simon Yam and more, this one's got everything: insane action setpieces, wacky hijinks, unfortunate humor, gender-bending, a Voltron-inspired climax, and even an interlude where it just becomes THE EVIL DEAD.

Who wants a Sci-Fi Andy Lau special effects laden Wong Jing directed film? Turns out not many people. Future X Cops is Wong Jing's 2010 seemingly rehashed Future Cops script with more CG, less fun, charisma, plot and pretty much everything else.

Jet Li and Jackie Cheung turn up the heat in a High Risk game of cat and mouse with a devious mastermind, in a desperate move to avoid total Meltdown. Wong Jing's 1995 blockbuster thinly veiled Die-Hard clone and Jackie Chan critique is pure octane!
When Philip Ng burst onto the scene in his 2014 leading-man debut, 'Once Upon a Time in Shanghai' - co-starring Sammo Hung and with fight choreography by Yuen Woo-ping - followed by his turn as Bruce Lee in the 2016 Hollywood biopic, 'Birth of the Dragon', the kung fu movie world was introduced to a wonderful new talent. In reality, of course, Philip's story of overnight success could not have been further from the truth. Since the early 2000s - when Philip decided to leave his home in Chicago to pursue a career in Hong Kong action cinema - he had been working tirelessly both in front and behind the camera, developing his skills as an action director and actor. He has become a leading light in a new generation of Hong Kong actors adept at sharing the screen with everyone from Donnie Yen to Simon Yam, Jackie Chan to Louis Koo, and working with directors as diverse as Ringo Lam, Stephen Fung, Benny Chan and Wong Jing. His 2019 martial arts film, 'Undercover Punch and Gun' - which is out now in North America courtesy of Well Go USA - is a love letter to the sort of Hong Kong action comedies he grew up watching in the 1980s and 90s. It sees him reunite with his long-time buddies and frequent collaborators, Andy On and Van Ness Wu. As well as being a fight-filled homage to the golden age of Hong Kong action movies, the film is equally dedicated to the three actors' friendship, which first started back in 2003 on the tournament movie, 'Star Runner'. Listen as Philip discusses his journey from an aspiring young martial artist into a fully fledged kung fu film star - and the ups and downs he has experienced along the way. This is Blacklisted Cinema, where you are encouraged to talk during the movie. The movie this episode is High Risk, also known in the United States as Meltdown, a 1995 Hong Kong action comedy film written, produced & directed by Wong Jing starring Jet Li. After failing to save his wife from 'The Doctor', Kit Li is working as a bodyguard and secret stunt double for the cowardly martial arts film star Frankie Lane. The film is a parody of some of Hollywood's most influential action films, such as Die Hard and Speed. It also gained controversy for spoofing Jackie Chan, who was, in turn, offended by the satire. Set to be the cameo filled, Chinese New Year blockbuster for 2020, Enter The Fat Dragon got denied by our ongoing Covid situation. However a low box office isn't gonna deny the AAC a chance to...praise a Donnie Yen film? Donnie plays Zhu Fallon, a good cop that loses his job, girlfriend and the respect of his peers due to being *too* dedicated to the cause. A routine prisoner escort mission to Japan could see him win his job back, but what shennanigans await him there? With an all star cast including Teresa Mo, Niki Chow and Wong Jing (!) fun times are gonna be had.
In the late 1970s, Richard Norton - martial artist and bodyguard to the stars - faced a crossroads in his life. He could either stay in Melbourne, Australia, and continue with his nine-to-five job, teaching martial arts in the evenings - a life he very much enjoyed - or follow the advice of singer Linda Ronstadt and move with her to California. It was a decision which would prove life-changing. Once in America, Richard started to supplement his days touring with some of the world's biggest musical artists - including ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor and many more - with work in the movies, encouraged by his friendships with Hollywood action legends like Chuck Norris and Pat E. Johnson. It was Pat who first introduced Richard to kung fu superstar Jackie Chan, leading him to eventually work on some of the greatest Hong Kong action films of the period, including 'Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars' and 'Millionaire's Express' for Sammo Hung, and 'Magic Crystal' and 'City Hunter' for Wong Jing. He would work again with Jackie Chan in the 1997 film, 'Mr. Nice Guy', and continue his on-screen partnership with B-movie action queen, Cynthia Rothrock, appearing in 10 films together from Hong Kong to Hollywood. Nowadays, Richard can increasingly be found behind the camera, lending his extraordinary martial arts knowledge as a fight trainer and choreographer on some of the biggest action films of the last decade, including 'Mad Max: Fury Road', 'Ghost in the Shell', 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix', and 'Suicide Squad'. His next release, James Gunn's version of 'The Suicide Squad', is scheduled for release on August 2021. Recorded during the lockdown from his home in Melbourne, Australia, join us as we chat about his amazing journey and his many achievements, something that Richard - who turned 70 in 2020 - puts down to simply being a byproduct of his quest to become the best martial artist he could possibly be. Judging by his continued work-rate, training regime, and passion for the martial arts, it is clearly something he continues to pursue each and every day. A nice Easter egg for those with keen eyes, Akuma made his video game debut not more than 6 months before the movie's release. Fun fact, this cameo was actually cropped out of the original Renegade Home Video VHS release in the US!This Street Fighter Zero/Alpha artwork by Bengus aka CRMK aka Gouda Cheese is definitely inspired by Akuma's big break on film.Ryu vs Sagat introThe dramatic encounter between Ryu and Sagat in that stormy field was turned into one of my favorite fighting game backgrounds in Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 2. It only shows up on special occasions and can only be selected by inputting a code at the character select screen!Capcom Sound Team Alph Lyla!A nice group pic of Alph Lyla including Yoko Shimomura, composer of Street Fighter 2!Capcom's in house sound team/band, Alph Lyla worked with the development of SFII Movie, and one of their songs is in the film! Kizutsuki Nagara or Grow Enraged When Injured plays during one of the flashback scenes of Ryu and Ken.Alph Lyla also adapted the main song from the film, Itoshisa to Setsunasa to Kokorotsuyosa to or Love and Kindness and Strong Heart and placed it into Street Fighter Zero as a secret scenario where you can recreate the final battle from the film! Here's the song sung by Ryoko Shinohara.A game based on a movie based on a game...Capcom adapted the movie into a full motion video game for the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn. There really isn't much to the game, you view scenes from the film as a Monitor Cyborg and click on selected scenes. What is kind of cool is that at the end of the game you actually get to play as said Cyborg. He is a reskin of Ken from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and plays exactly the same. Here's a fun combo video of him by combo master desk. There are some extra animated scenes exclusive to the game up until the recent Discotek Blu-Ray release. Speaking of, if you enjoyed this article and don't have that yet GO BUY IT!Next episode of Heroes Three we will be covering the insane Wong Jing film Future Cops! If you're familiar with Street Fighter and Future Cops you should know why. See you then!- Carlos

Also which rock stars made the best movie theatre guests and hazy memories of Judgement Night.
Hong Kong A listers Chow Yun Fat and Nicholas Tse took to the red carpet in Macau last night to promote their new film "Man from Macau." It's been twenty years since Chow starred in a gambling themed film. He played the title role in the 1989 Hong Kong film "God of Gamblers," an iconic role that defined an era in Hong Kong's cinematic history, inspiring other gambling themed films that soon followed. The 1994 sequel "God of Gamblers Returns" remains one of Hong Kong's highest grossing films and it cemented Chow's status as of one Hong Kong's top grossing box office stars. Despite playing high rollers in films Chow says that in real life he despises gambling as when he was growing up his father lost a lot of money with the past-time leaving the family penniless. With the Chinese New Year just around the corner, audiences have the chance of a double helping of Chow Yun Fat, as he also stars in the fantasy action film "The Monkey King" which is released on Thursday next week. Chow says the films offer cinema-goers two very different experiences: "This film, Nicholas and I carry the film, 50/50. The other film is 30/70. I'm 30, Donnie Yen is 70. The two films are from different genres. The other one is 3D, and this one is for the Chinese New Year. I hope the audience will enjoy both because they are different." After walking the red carpet of the premier, Chow and Tse, along with director Wong Jing, and producer Andrew Lau left their hand prints for Macau's Avenue of Stars.
