Références Peterson, M. C., Holbrook, J. H., Hales, D. V., Smith, N. L. & Staker, L. V. This episode is a conversation between architect and Atelier Bow-Wow-founding-member Momoyo Kiajima and curator Haris Giannouras. It was recorded right after the opening of the exhibition Suturing Together by Atelier Bow-Wow on 12 September 2025. Their discussion focuses on care work in architecture, books and their forms in designing and understanding the build environment, 1980s Japanese comedy shows, Sutemi Horiguchi, and the importance of love in building someone's home. Atelier Bow-Wow Suturing Together 12.9. – 16.11.2025 The exhibition Suturing Together includes a site-specific intervention covering almost the entire right arch of the Secession's foyer, an extended archive showing the studio's practice spanning over the last 30 years, a thatch-seating made using thatch in collaboration with students from Vienna and a poster with detailed essays and an analytical index of Atelier Bow-Wow's past projects. Exploring material networks, supply chains and ad hoc architecture, the term “Suturing” becomes a stand-in for the studio's synergetic approach: piecing together things that have been torn up, forms, communities, histories and memories. This episode was recorded on 12 September 2025 at the Secession. Atelier Bow-Wow, based in Tokyo, was founded in 1992 by Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto. Yoichi Tamai was appointed partner in 2015. Atelier Bow-Wow is an acclaimed international practice with an extensive portfolio of work as well as exhibitions and publications. The firm's projects range from residential buildings to public spaces and are characterized by a commitment to sustainability, social impact, and an understanding of human behavior in the built environment. Tsukamoto and Kaijima received the RIBA International Fellowship in 2012 and the Wolf Prize in Architecture in 2022. Atelier Bow-Wow is the 2024– 2026 Rothwell Co-Chair at the University of Sydney. Momoyo Kaijima has been serving as professor of architectural behaviorology at ETH, Zurich, since 2017 and vice president of the NPO Cheer Art, where she became president in 2024. She also taught as a visiting professor at the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2003 and 2016, as well as at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2011–2012, at Rice University in 2014–2015, at Columbia University in 2017, and at the Yale School of Architecture in 2023. In 2018, she was the curator of Japanese pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. In 2024, she was appointed to the planning and management committee of TOTO Gallery·Ma and made a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. Haris Giannouras works with artists to make exhibitions, artworks, publications and events. He is currently a curator at the Secession in Vienna. Before that he worked at MUSEUM MMK FÜR MODERNE KUNST in Frankfurt and Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach. Recent projects include work with Studio for Propositional Cinema, Cana Bilir-Meier, Atelier Bow-Wow, Andrea Büttner, Jamie Crewe, Beatrice Gibson, Onyeka Igwe, Eleanor Ivory Weber, Hiwa K, Ghislaine Leung, Lin & Lam, Duane Linklater, Karī Mugo, Fiona Banner aka The Vanity Press, and the Estate of Suzan Pitt. (Leben und Sterben in L.A., 1985, ebenfalls Friedkin). Jonathan returns in the guest seat to discuss 1989's Japanese experimental sci-fi body horror movie "Tetsuo: The Iron Man" directed, written, produced, and edited by Shinya Tsukamoto in his first first feature length film with Spoop Bois Aaron and Derek. They get into the themes or lack thereof, personal interpretations of what's happening in the movie, and how it assaults the senses. They also talk about Tsukamoto's journey to making this, the brutal experience shooting it, the practicality behind the metal prosthetics, the industrial soundtrack and many many other aspects of the film. Derek's brain will soon be metal. Aaron's future is metal. Jonathan will turn the entire world to rust!

Felicia is joined by Rolo Tony to discuss John Cassavetes take on a woman trapped by her struggles with mental health, in A Woman Under the Influence (1974). We chat about the concept of motherhood and being wife in the 70s while battling a mental illness. Along with a quote from Cassavetes himself with his take on Mabel, and whether she is feeling the pressures of having Nick for a husband or she is suffering from a mental illness. We also discuss Nick, and where his ‘good intentions' stem from, and how they relate to the way he was raised, and the women in his life. We also have fun chatting about spaghetti, so it wasn't all so heavy. Send us your thoughts on the episode - how do you feel about Cassavetes's take on Mabel? Our October horror series continues as Byrd, Tom, Lux and Kevin discuss Shinya Tsukamoto's cult classic Tetsuo trilogy! Tsukamoto burst onto the Japanese indie scene with the first film in 1989, cementing him as a master of surrealist outsider cinema, putting his name alongside directors like Sogo Ishii, David Lynch, and David Cronenberg, and also becoming an icon of the emerging Japanese cyberpunk scene. Tetsuo The Iron Man told the story of a Japanese salaryman slowly transforming into a mass of flesh, steel and raging libido. 1992's The Body Hammer took a less surrealistic approach to the material with a more straightforward narrative about a Japanese man who is tricked into murdering his son and his rage manifests in the form of guns and metal. 2009's The Bullet Man was an attempt to appeal to an American audience, with an English speaking cast and delving into the lore of the Tetsuo cyborg monster. Although Tsukamoto's films are NOT for the faint of heart, they've managed to be extremely influential on genre cinema the world over. In addition to the movies, we also discuss Tsukamoto's career, the definition of "cyberpunk," some of his famous fans and collaborators (including Martin Scorsese, Takashi Miike, Nine Inch Nails, and Quentin Tarantino), and how Tsukamoto's themes of destruction, sexuality, and man's merging with technology continue to be thought provoking years after his debut. Sit back and enjoy the show! Together, we can turn this world into rust!

He then attended the University of California, Davis beginning in 1930 where he earned a degree in agriculture. After college, Fletcher ran a peach orchard in Red Bluff, California, and then became a state shipping point inspector (agriculture inspector). Starting in 1942, Fletcher began working for the Florin Fire Department. Executive Order 9066, by FDR, in 1942 forced relocation of 122,000 Japanese-Americans, most of them citizens, to internment camps, where they were held without charges out of a misguided suspicion that they might be disloyal. In addition to losing their liberty, the Japanese-American internees often lost the homes and businesses that they had to leave behind. In particular, Japanese-American farmers, who had to leave their crops untended.Near Sacramento, many of the Japanese who were relocated were farmers who had worked land around the town of Florin since at least the 1890s. Mr. Fletcher, who was single and in his early 30s at the time, knew many of them through his work inspecting fruit for the government. The farmers regarded him as honest, and he respected their operations.Al Tsukamoto, whose parents arrived in the United States in 1905, approached Mr. Fletcher with a business proposal: would he be willing to manage the farms of two family friends of Mr. Tsukamoto's, and to pay the taxes and mortgages while they were away? In return, he could keep all the profits.Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Tsukamoto had not been close, and Mr. Fletcher had no experience growing the farmers' specialty, flame tokay grapes, but he accepted the offer and soon quit his job.For the next three years he worked a total of 90 acres on three farms — he had also decided to run Mr. Tsukamoto's farm. He worked 18-hour days and lived in the bunkhouse Mr. Tsukamoto had reserved for migrant workers. He paid the bills of all three families — the Tsukamotos, the Okamotos and the Nittas. He kept only half of the profits. But Mr. Fletcher's efforts put him at personal risk, in a community where many viewed the Japanese-Americans with suspicion and resentment, in the wake of Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. He was reviled as a "Jap lover," and was nearly hit by a rifle shot that someone fired into the Tsukamoto family's barn. Many Japanese-American families lost property while they were in the camps because they could not pay their bills. Most in the Florin area moved elsewhere after the war. When the Tsukamotos returned in 1945, they found that Mr. Fletcher had left them money in the bank and that his new wife, Teresa, had cleaned the Tsukamotos' house in preparation for their return. She had chosen to join her husband in the bunkhouse instead of accepting the Tsukamotos' offer to live in the family's house.“Teresa's response was, ‘It's the Tsukamotos' house,' ” recalled Marielle Tsukamoto, who was 5 when she and her family were sent to the Jerome center. “Few people in history exemplify the best ideals the way that Bob did,” said Tsukamoto's daughter, Marielle “He was honest and hardworking and had integrity. Whenever you asked him about it, he just said, ‘It was the right thing to do.' ”But Fletcher's efforts put him at personal risk, in a community where many viewed the Japanese-Americans with suspicion and resentment, in the wake of Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. He was reviled as a "Jap lover," and was nearly hit by a rifle shot that someone fired into the Tsukamoto family's barn.“I did know a few of them pretty well and never did agree with the evacuation,” he told The Sacramento Bee in 2010. “They were the same as anybody else. It was obvious they had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor.”After the war, resentment against the Japanese in Florin continued. If Mr. Tsukamoto tried to buy a part at the hardware store only to be told that the part was not in stock, he would ask Mr. Fletcher to buy it for him.The Fletchers bought their own land in Florin after the war and raised hay and cattle. Mr. Fletcher was a volunteer firefighter in Florin for many decades before becoming the paid fire chief. He was also active in historical groups. He was never much for celebrating his role in the war, and he noted that other Florin residents had helped their Japanese neighbors.“I don't know about courage,” he said in 2010 as Florin was preparing to honor him in a ceremony. “It took a devil of a lot of work.”Mr. Fletcher, who was in good health until a recent leg infection, was a reserved man of simple tastes. He drank more than a quart of milk a day and enjoyed spending time with his wife or working.“I did know a few of them pretty well and never agreed with the evacuation,” he told the Sacramento Bee in 2010. “They were the same as anybody else. It was obvious they had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor.”At Fletcher's 100th birthday celebration in 2011, Doris Taketa, who was just 12 when her family was sent off to a camp in Arkansas, recalled how they had viewed him as a hero. "My mother called him God, because only God would do something like that," she said.Mr. Fletcher, who settled in Sacramento as a farmer after the war, also served people in other ways. He spent 20 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Florin Fire Department and retired in 1974 after another 12 years as paid chief. He helped start the Florin Water District in 1959 and was a board member for 50 years.“He never stopped working hard — but not for himself,” said Rick Martinez, a former Florin and Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District chief. “He worked hard to get done whatever needed to be done for others.”His inspirational story is recounted in history books, including “We The People: A Story of Internment in America” by Elizabeth Pinkerton and Mary Tsukamoto, whose family farm he saved.“I don't know about courage,” he said in 2010 as Florin was preparing to honor him in a ceremony. “It took a devil of a lot of work.”Mr. Fletcher, who was in good health until a recent leg infection, was a reserved man of simple tastes. Over a decade after his high-octane cyber-punk metal mutilation fetishism monster debut Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), director-producer-writer-cinematographer-editor-star Shinya Tsukamoto truly discovered himself as an artist and filmmaker with the blue-tinted, rain-drenched fever nightmare A Snake of June (2002). His seventh feature film, it follows three characters: a sexually-repressed telephone counselor, her hygiene-obsessed husband and a mysterious, spying interloper who will disrupt and upend their domestic sterilization. Hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs revisit every monochromatic corner of this beautifully strange film, which is somehow persistently cruel yet deeply empathetic to the three characters who find themselves trapped within the oppressive confines of their urban surroundings. How much of this is a self-critique by Tsukamoto (who also plays the creepy, disembodied voyeur) on the exploitative nature of cinema itself? Is there a safe middleground between cultural subjugation and unrestrained liberation? There's a lot to discuss about this deceptively short masterwork. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.01.518660v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhang, Q., Kandasamy, L. C., Tsukamoto, M., Inoue, K., Pires, M. F., Shin, M., Tanaka, M., Nagasawa, Y., Sambuu, T., Itohara, S., Ogawa, S., Young, L. J. Abstract: Oxytocin receptor (OXTR) modulates social behaviors in a species-specific manner. Remarkable inter- and intraspecies variation in brain OXTR distribution are associated with diversity in social behavior. To investigate potential genetic mechanisms underlying the phylogenetic plasticity in brain Oxtr expression and its consequences on social behavior, we constructed BAC transgenic mice harboring the entire prairie vole Oxtr locus with surrounding intergenic regulatory elements. Eight independent volized (pvOxtr) mouse lines were obtained; remarkably, each line displayed a unique pattern of brain expression distinct from mice and prairie voles. Four pvOxtr lines were selected for further investigation. Despite robust differences in brain expression, Oxtr expression in mammary gland was conserved across lines, suggesting that Oxtr expression in brain, but not mammary gland, is highly sensitive to local chromosomal landscape at integration sites. Moreover, different volized mouse lines showed differences in partner preference and maternal behaviors. Our results from this cross-species study suggest that species-specific variation in regulatory elements or distribution of transcription factors are not responsible for species-typical brain Oxtr expression patterns. Thus, transcriptional hypersensitivity to surrounding sequence of brain Oxtr may be a key mechanism to generate diversity in brain OXTR distribution and social behaviors. This inherent evolvability of brain Oxtr expression constitutes a novel transcriptional mechanism to generate variability in neuropeptide receptor distribution which, through natural selection, can generate diversity in adaptive social behaviors while preserving peripheral expression. The volized Oxtr mouse lines are useful for further understanding OXTR regulation and key neural circuits/networks mediating variability in social behaviors. Copy rights belong to original authors.
This episode Adam and Ben are joined by a real life doctor... of film. Dr. Jonathan Wroot is the senior lecturer and program leader for film studies at the University of Greenwich, London. He has published several journal articles and book chapters on Asian cinema distribution and specifically on home video formats. Jonathan has most recently published his first monograph entitled "The Paths of Zatoichi - The Global Influence of the Blind Swordsman" and he talks in great depth on the influence that character of Zatoichi had on Japanese cinema, but especially on the Jidaigeki films, or chambara films, or samurai films, or edo-era films, or whatever you want to call them. The boys discuss such Third Window Films releases as TOP KNOT DETECTIVE, UZUMASA LIMELIGHT, THE SUFFERING OF NINKO and Shin'ya Tsukamoto's masterpiece KILLING amongs many other things. Tetsuo: The Iron Man was based on a play that Shin'ya Tsukamoto had written, directed, and performed in college. About a Japanese businessman who accidentally kills a mad 'metal fetishist'. He proceeds to hide the corpse, unaware that he's plagued by a curse that turns his flesh into steel. This was our first time watching this impressive body horror masterpiece. www.garbagedaypodcast.com www.patreon.com/garbagedaypodcast garbagedaypodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @garbagedaycast
On this episode we bring Zach Langley Chi Chi of the I'm So Popular podcast to talk about 1980's Coin Locker Babies by Ryu Murakami. This one is an all-timer. We talk about: Horror drag, the conciseness of the Japanese language, white space on the page, visceral writing, retarded people who rate this book low for being gross, Murakami's influence on Miike and Tsukamoto, how to make a truly nasty novel through having good characters, businessmen beating off on the subway, voices that can destroy the whole world, flies with human faces, parental neglect, Tokyo as a city at war with the swamp it's built over, unique cultural phenomena, the glamor of mass acts of terror, bullying as a love language, outlets for human violence, art as a cage for violent impulses, homophobia, enjoying freaks, Otessa Moshfegh, and real-life Datura experiences.
[Heads up: the audio quality is not the best in this episode. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.] On this week's episode, we're joined by returning furry friend Jules The Nintendo Boy as well as a newcomer named Trace to discuss a little Japanese horror film called Hiruko The Goblin, directed by the innovative Japanese filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto! Tsukamoto's claim to fame was making a lil' small budget cyberpunk body horror film known as Tetsuo: The Iron Man. After gaining notoriety for making one of the most craziest films in the world, he was able to make his first proper studio film Hiruko The Goblin, which is based on a manga titled Yokai Hunter. How does the film hold up in comparison to Tetsuo? What does Tsukamoto uniquely bring to the table with this film? All will be answered in this episode!
Well, it had to happen eventually. Kelby and I review a film neither of us liked. And it's weird because Tetsuo 1 & 2 are masterpieces. So what went wrong? Did Alejandro Jodorowsky break Tsukamoto's brain? Along the way, we talk about satellite sales, color palettes, school shootings, and some of our favorite podcasts. It's the dumbest episode, which is appropriate for the worst movie we've watched so far.

The researchers found that the masks worn by these 32 testers glowed brightly and showed traces of the COVID-19 virus after being sprayed with the antibody spray and held under a UV light. Tsukamoto's team also noted that the glow faded over time as the patients recovered and their viral load decreased. Tsukamoto intends to trial the mask on 150 participants in the team's next round of testing, and hopes to get the green light from the Japanese government to sell the masks in 2022. 3. 推特:未经许可禁止分享个人影像︱Twitter removes images posted without consentTwitter has updated its privacy policy so it can remove images of people that have been posted without their consent, the company said in a blog post.
