When we opened our FLAVOR TEXT series up to commissions, none of us thought we'd be talking about long-running improv comedy bits. But alas, here we are. This month we're examing the career of comedy legend Martin Short. More importantly, we're goinig through the character? story? persona? that is Jiminy Glick and his TV show Prime Time Glick! Special thanks to Noah for setting a new high bar on weird FLAVOR TEXT commissions! Check out our Patreon at patreon.com/debatethiscast to commission your own FLAVOR TEXT! We are here with actor, singer, and entertainer Roslyn Kind. You Might Know Her From: The Look of Love/The Island, 3 From Brooklyn, The Nanny, I'm Going to Be Famous, Ladies of the House, Gimme a Break, and her over 50-year illustrious recording career. We talked to Roslyn about signing to RCA Records as just a 17-year-old girl, lampooning her famous sister Barbra Streisand in an iconic episode of The Nanny, and her latest projects that retells two of her signature songs into a short film. Roslyn also gave us the goods on blood harmony with her mother and Babs, her British invasion influences, the challenge of making “People” hers in her Broadway debut, and set the record on her theatrical credits because you know You Might Know Her is always going to dig some old shet up. This was just a beautiful Roslyn Kind-shaped bow to close out 2024, our year of Barbra, after reading her 900-page magnum opus. Rozzie, we love you. On Saturday, June 29th, Trev and Joe got together and recorded an incredible episode about all the exciting new X-Men related merch hitting the shelves nowadays. And then, due to an audio-related SNAFU, they decided the episode was un-releasable. Now, join us as we re-do the episode, weeks later, trying to cover the same material without simply repeating the same conversation. So here is Take Two of Capitalist Joe discussing the X-Men toys, Lego sets, and video games that he's happy to see, and what he thinks it means for the property's current stature in pop culture. PLUS, we reminisce about the lost discussions from the previous version of the episode, including a debate about Martin Short's Jiminy Glick character, thoughts on broken fandoms, and a way too in-depth Martin Mull tribute. Thanks to our sponsor Nuts.com! Right now, Nuts.com is offering new customers a free gift with purchase and free shipping on orders of $29 or more at Nuts.com/PAPA. Tom and Kira kick off this week's episode by discussing the nuances of saying people's names, spotlighting Kumail Nanjiani. Kira shares a poignant yet amusing story about a sad dream, weaving in her fantasy of faking a gig and the comfort found in coffees. The conversation takes a deeper turn into themes of death and the digital legacy of passwords, lightened by Kira's riff on Only Fans and Tom's ASMR ventures. Russian superstitions and Tom's wife's OCD quirks bring a cultural and personal flavor to the mix, segueing into heartwarming tales of Kira's kids in "Wizard of Oz" & "Oliver," and the ups and downs of raising kids, complemented by lighter notes on Mike's nuts and Tom's Led Zeppelin shirt when he was a boy. Clothing and jeans serve as a metaphor for life's fits and misfits, punctuated by Tom's hilarious Jiminy Glick story. Revisiting death and funeral arrangements, they candidly discuss the practicalities of wills, funeral costs, and organ donation, offering a grounded perspective on life's inevitable end. But really, how many dead bodies are there on planes?

Comedy icon Martin Short (2023 Emmy nominee for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Only Murders in the Building') is well into his 70s. And while he's still capable of the unbounded energy he first showed the world on shows like ‘SCTV' and ‘Saturday Night Live,' he can also be more sincere and reflective than his biggest fans might expect. In this in-depth conversation, the man who's known as just “Marty” to his famous friends tells hilarious stories about working with Steve Martin, performing for David Letterman, embodying Jiminy Glick and more. Plus, he breaks down what it took to transform himself into a #MeToo monster for his Emmy-nominated role on ‘The Morning Show' and talks about the origins of ‘Only Murders' co-starring Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. This episode was originally published on August 18th, 2020.Follow Matt Wilstein on Twitter @mattwilsteinFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. EPISODE 189: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: No, I also don't have any idea WHAT Mike Pence told Jack Smith's Grand Jury yesterday but boy do I hope he incriminated everybody. On the other hand, I have a pretty good idea that barring the unforeseen, the terms of Tucker Carlson's contract with Fox will be such that the vague, poorly-lit, dog-whistle-filled twitter video from Wednesday night may be the last we see of him for awhile, and it may mark the beginning of his firing slipping out of our (often thankfully) breakneck news cycle. As a warning: the remainder of this episode is the reprise of five separate Carlson commentaries from the last five months, tracing his ascent to madness and his fall from employment. If you don't want to hear stuff you've already heard, you can cut out at about the nine minute mark and I won't take it personally :-) (9:20) November 22: When Tucker Carlson tried to get Trans people and drag performers and allies shot (20:51) February 21: The McCarthy-January 6th video deal is made and it is time to de-platform Tucker Carlson - and de-platform Fox "News." B-Block (39:42) March 13: The Carlson gaslighting of the January 6th Capitol video was so clearly an attempt to foment obstruction of justice and rebellion that Carlson could've been indicted and arrested (58:12) But on March 14 it became clear - as Carlson re-ran several clips for the third time and obviously had nothing of interest to show anybody - that he not only wouldn't be arrested, but with THAT video, as they say, he COULDN'T get arrested. C-Block (1:13:10) April 24: SCHADENFREUDE. The firing of Carlson as it happened, including me singing "Ode To Joy" with the original German lyrics.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EPISODE 177: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump stole a map. The map shows classified intelligence info. Trump took the map to Mar-a-Lago. Trump showed the map to "aides and visitors." That is the definition of the dissemination of national intelligence, and that is ESPIONAGE. That's up to 10 years in jail. If he showed it to a foreign power it's life - or worse. And the New York Times also reports "Prosecutors have now interviewed nearly everyone who could offer insight in connection with the documents..." while The Washington Post says Special Counsel Jack Smith has opened a new line of inquiry: into possible fraud by Trump on those idiots he conned into donating to fight a rigged election he knew WASN'T rigged. If that sounds familiar to you, that's exactly what Fox "News" did and it sounds like before the trial has even started Fox is losing its battle with Dominion. There are tapes of Bartiromo and Giuliani and Sidney Powell admitting they can't prove claims they've made on Fox against Dominion and Fox hid them from Dominion AND the judge and the judge is pissed. And if it needed to get worse for Murdoch or Trump: Trump's ludicrous claim to Murdoch's minion Tucker Carlson that everybody at the courthouse cried as they arrested him is refuted by a Michael Isikoff news source, who adds a perfect metaphorical knife between the ribs of Trump's insatiable ego. B-Block (15:57) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The Justins are back, Chuck Schumer and other Senate Dems want DOJ to see if their 1st or 14th Amendment rights were violated and if citizens of Memphis and Nashville were denied their rights to choose their representatives, Tucker Carlson goes full racist on them. Ro Khanna calls on Dianne Feinstein to resign, and the New York Post inadvertently suggests Republicans aren't Americans. (19:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The drama in MAGA-land: if they have to boycott Bud Light and Anheuser-Busch, how will they get drunk cheaply? A Missouri state senator doubles down on his belief that adults should be able to marry 12-year olds. And the first question on the application to work for Gov. Sarah Huckabee is: what's YOUR favorite thing about Gov. Sarah Huckabee? C-Block (24:35) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Even for Los Angeles local TV, where if you hang on to your job for seven years you can keep it for seventy years, Jerry Dunphy was a mandarin. The first local news star and maybe the last. Shot in the parking lot of his station. Fired by one station one night, hired by another 24 hours later. And his memorable catchphrase "From the desert to the sea to all of Southern California: a good evening." It was memorable - except when Jerry Dunphy COULDN'T REMEMBER IT.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the boys seems more interested and involved than the other. The twins are named Brady and Carter. Frank thinks that when they go to school the teachers will call them James (Jim) Brady and James (Jimmy) Carter. Frank was the emcee for the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame Gala. This year's social media inductee Steve Wildsmith submitted a blurb for Frank to read as his introduction that included the lines, “He spent 17 years as an entertainment writer for The Daily Times in Maryville. In 2015, Steve was delighted to receive a bear hug from Dolly Parton, only to discover she mistakenly thought he was the late Terry Morrow, television critic for the Knoxville News Sentinel.” Frank often invited Terry to be a guest on the radio. When Terry wanted the radio station to create a “Dancing with the Knoxville Stars” event, Frank introduced him to promotions coordinator Gretchen Bartlett, who had a similar idea. Becca won the dance trophy when she competed in “Dancing with the Knoxville Stars.” Kristin Farley won the fundraising competition that year. Becca now works with Kristin and former dance studio owner Emily Norris through their new jobs with the City of Knoxville. Frank got a bill from his dentist after his regular teeth-cleaning. Frank's insurance changed and his dentist is now out-of-network. Jere canceled her appointment and began searching for a new dentist. Becca heard that performers who talk a lot are prone to cavities. Frank uses whitening mouthwash and toothpaste and likes the results. Frank heard a funny Jiminy Glick clip on his friend Bean's podcast. EPISODE 105: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Taliban Caucus lights the Republican Party and the House of Representatives on fire, while on his first day, the New Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries perfectly whips his members to do literally do nothing more than bring their popcorn and watch everybody from Gaetz to McCarthy burn, baby, burn. It was a beautiful thing, and it left the full range of fascists from Tucker Carlson to Rep. Byron Donalds having to cobble together the nonsensical sophistry that their self-defenestration was actually democracy in action. If Jeffries can manage to keep the Democrats from reverting to their natural desire to do ill-timed good on behalf of the institution rather than let the Republicans shoot themselves again today, he will have won the 118th Congress no matter which Liz Truss the GOP eventually settles on in place of the wounded McCarthy. B-Block (15:15) SPECIAL COMMENT No. 2: There is the tragedy of Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills, and then there is the disgusting reality that the National Football League is now trying to gaslight us. OF COURSE the league intended to resume Monday night's game even after the stricken player fell. And now the NFL has lied about it and sleazily blamed Joe Buck, Suzy Kolber and all of ESPN, to cover up its own insensitivity and callousness. This is, of course, the history of the NFL, which did the wrong thing after JFK was assassinated, and after Mayor George Moscone and Councilman Harvey Milk were assassinated hours before a Monday Night Football game in San Francisco, and after it was told flights could not be guaranteed to get its players and media to games the weekend after 9/11. But this lie makes the Hamlin nightmare even worse - as does the rank exploitation of it by the anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, who spit on the memories of Chuck Hughes and J.V. Cain and Hank Gathers and so many athletes who died on the field, from cardiac distress. (30:54) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Trump and Michael Flynn are no match for Congressman-Elect George Santos. C-Block (36:09) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In 1973, Charles Crawford was interviewing me for his TV news story from one of the earliest baseball card shows. In 1983, he was sitting next to me on the anchor desk at CNN. He introduced himself and I said "we've met before." His reaction when I told him how and when is worth your time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EPISODE 72: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) OH GOD I so wanted Trump to declare his candidacy last night. He was THISCLOSE to doing it at his fascist rally in Ohio and thus snatching defeat for the Republicans from the jaws of victory, like he did in Georgia. But somebody got to him! (3:46) Whatever happens today, the media is doing everything it can to stick to the "Red Wave" narrative: Their polls all indicate Democratic leads in the Generic Congressional Ballot so what did Politico, Yahoo, and Reuters do? THEY DISMISSED THEIR OWN POLLS AS OUTLIERS. It all underscores the real media narrative: The media corporations are sucking up to the fascists (8:30) Last night, the Republicans gave away the next narrative: any election undecided by Wednesday morning has been fixed by the Democrats (10:48) Oh by the way, a key member of Russia's 2016 Conspiracy with Trump confessed to interfering in the election (11:45) And Elon Musk tweeted more Nazi names and six months after saying "for Twitter to deserve public trust it must be politically neutral" he told his 115,000,000 followers they should vote Republican. Oh and he's also talking about putting all of Twitter behind a paywall. B-Block (16:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Ace has been reserved! Today it's Angie, in Brooklyn (17:33) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Bannon incarceration delayed, Ted Cruz hit by a White Claw and Texas police actually just don't stand there (19:24) IN SPORTS: Check with me Monday after new Coach Saturday makes his debut Sunday; It's the strangest NFL coaching move since Rock Island fired its coach mid-game in 1921. Baseball free agent news and the new Veterans' Hall of Fame Ballot is out: McGriff, Murphy, Mattingly, four roiders, one jackass - where's Keith Hernandez? (23:27) Brit "Trash OnThe Street" Hume and CNN's New Morning Show, called "Fascists? Please Let Us Live!" are no match for the all-time champion of Conventional Political Lack of Wisdom and Groupthink: Chris Cillizza with an all-time great column, telling History Teacher Jim Clyburn he doesn't understand history. C-Block (34:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The day in 1981 the disc jockey on the top New York radio station tried to kill me and then get me fired for daring to criticize "his" New York Giants on his show. The saga of Ted Brown and "he won't remember that either" (49:55) Plus, because it was handy, a complete sportscast from December 30, 1981, and 22-year old me doing an entire sportscast on WNEW Radio in New York, complete with the latest Wayne Gretzky news (and Ted Brown).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
DOJ'S LATE NIGHT FILING AGAINST TRUMP A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT. I wonder if Trump has ever heard of Victor Marchetti? He will now. The Government's 1975 court victory over him defined who has to prove a Classified Document is STILL a Classified Document - and it ain't the government. The Justice Department with a killer filing in its appeal of the Special Master ruling (3:55) Even as the Special Master comes down on Trump like a ton of bricks. His insistence those are HIS documents because he declassified some of them but he can't tell you which ones or when, is attacked by Special Master Dearie (4:10) Who says "You can't have your cake and eat it too." Didn't somebody we all know use that same phrase yesterday? YES I DID. (6:03) If you think Trump's lawyers are nitwits, wait'll you hear Alina Habba not understand why it's called an OCTOBER Surprise (6:45) Trump also makes a dumb analogy about the search of his bedroom (7:40) While New York's Attorney General may be ready to move (8:00) And three of the asylum seekers DeSantis human-trafficked have filed a class action suit against him and he's reduced to using the phrase "Onesie-Twosies" (10:34) And Trump's desperate neediness leads to one of the greatest Owns in Twitter history: Greg Proops flattens Maggie Haberman for all time. B-Block (14:35) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Hooch (16:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Ron Johnson "condones" white supremacy; Bret "Mr. Journalist" Baier tried to get the Fox Arizona call retracted; Tucker Carlson may get more people hurt. (18:50) IN SPORTS: 60 homers for Judge, the passing of Maury Wills, three NHL vets retire (21:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The 1776 Restoration Movement scumbags compete with Ronna McDaniel and a ton of Fentanyl for Halloween, and the Australian TV hosts covering the Queen's funeral, for the honors. C-Block (26:45) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: 25 years since the head of the NBC part of MSNBC told me to ignore the head of the MS part of MSNBC. Andy Lack said they "were only supposed to give us money and computer terminals! Don't tell ME that we have to 'synergize' cable television and the internet - whatever the hell the internet is!"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hayley and the Knobs talk the happenings at Wimbledon, President Donald Trump allegedly trying to choke a secret service employee on January 6th, a 101 year old Nazi being sentenced for his crimes in WWII, and Terry's Kentucky Center appearance with Martin Short as Jiminy Glick...
Michael Short talks to me about how the "attic" comedy tapes he made with his brother Marty led to him being hired on SCTV; joining the show in series 3; writing the Earl and Floyd segments; Stretch Your Arm; getting hired by John Candy to write on Big City Comedy the Monday after SCTV wrapped; Margaret Trudeau; returning to SCTV for the second US cycle; pitching Great White North Palace and winning the Emmy; playing Mike the Bartender on the Cinemax season; the anonymity of working for SCTV; Jim Carrey almost joins the Cinemax cast; working with Jonathan Winters; Speed Zones; Dave Thomas Show; how working for the former Christian Broadcast Company (then Family Channel) let some things by on Maniac Mansion; NBC executives ruin the Martin Short Show; the evolution of Jiminy Glick; working with Jan Hooks; having to make sure he was fired from the Bonnie Hunt Show; casting Bonnie for an unaired Dave Thomas pilot; working on Mad TV with Artie Lange; being too edgy for Wayne Brady; pitching "Pimp My Outhouse" for Blue Collar TV; reality TV; being the first writer hired for Schitt's Creek and being (with Dan Levy) the only one who was there for the whole series; winning the Emmy for best comedy, but COVID keeping him away --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
You know who's underrated as an actor? Martin Short. Not all comedians are able to jump the hurdle into Serious Actor, and arguably Martin Short never truly succeeded financially in that sense, but his amazing comedic sensibilities mixed with his sincerity sure make for an interesting watch. Or at least we think so.In this episode of Notes From the Back Row, Dan and Jenna team up to watch what Martin Short himself called his "leading man years" – a string of movie roles that set him up to become the next big thing in cinema and never really went anywhere big. Come for the nostalgia of Three Amigos, stay for his '80s-tastic romantic sex comedy. The following films are discussed:• Three Amigos (1986)• Innerspace (1987)• Cross My Heart (1987)• Three Fugitives (1989)• Captain Ron (1992)• Jiminy Glick in Lalawood (2004)**Bonus** Enjoy these links too:• CineMagique at Disney Paris• SCTV Cast vs Crew softball game• SCTV Lewis Sings Dylan

In this in-depth conversation, the man who’s known as just “Marty” to his famous friends tells hilarious stories about working with Steve Martin, performing for David Letterman, embodying Jiminy Glick and more. In 2007, Johnny Depp said of Bruce Witkin: “This guy is someone I've known for 30 years. He's a brother. We worked in bands together, we were on the road together, we lived together.” One of those bands was The Kids, which Bruce started in Florida back in 1978, and with whom he and Johnny would move out to L.A. with seeking fame and fortune. Cut to almost 40 years later and Bruce and Johnny are in another band together, a little rock supergroup called the Hollywood Vampires, featuring Joe Perry, Matt Sorum, and Alice Cooper. In between The Kids and The Vampires, Bruce has worked with everyone from Paul McCartney to Marilyn Manson, as well as producing movie soundtracks like The Lone Ranger, The Rum Diary, and Sweeney Todd, for which he was nominated for a Grammy. He’s one of the baddest musicians in L.A. and a pretty mean poker player. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this (very smokey) After Hours conversation with Mr. Bruce Witkin. Somebody pointed out to me there’s all these photos with Johnny, but when there’s one with me and him in it, he has a different smile on his face.Bruce Witkin Bruce Witkin Discusses: Leaving the Bronx for Miami Playing in The Kids with Johnny Depp Playing in the Hollywood Vampires Touring with Adam Ant and Vanessa Paradis Working with Paul McCartney Working with Marilyn Manson Working on Jiminy Glick in Lalawood Working on Sweeney Todd The Glam Skanks Sheila Witkin The South Florida music scene of the ‘70s and ‘80s Being nominated—and playing—The Grammys Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan Living on Nicolas Cage’s yacht with Johnny Depp Flux Unison Music Johnny Depp’s band “P” Hollywood Vampires’s new album Post traumatic tour depression Looking back College Tighty Whities band Gallery Links Bruce Witkin - AllMusic Bruce Witkin - IMDb The Kids - Rolling Stone The Kids - Johnny Depp Rocks The Kids - Live at the Agora Ballroom, 1982 - YouTube Another Night at the Agora Trailer - YouTube Hollywood Vampires - Official Site Hollywood Vampires - Spotify Hollywood Vampires - YouTube Joe Perry Health Scare - Billboard "You’re So Vain," Marilyn Manson Cover - YouTube Sweeney Todd Soundtrack - YouTube Glam Skanks - Spotify Sheila Witkin Memorial Concert, 2008 - YouTube Blow Trailer - YouTube Hollywood Vampires, Live at The Grammys - YouTube Jeff Levine - IMDb Unison Music Johnny Depp’s Band “P” Tighty Whities - Facebook

The one and only "Jiminy Glick". A creation straight out of the mind of Martin Short, Jiminy is a character based on many, praised by few but surpassed by none. Sit back and enjoy the terrible personality of the hardest working man in show business, Jiminy Glick.
