Today's episode is all about grimy New York movies from the mid-20th century. So much was going on in that small stretch of the city and movies made in that time and place show it off so well. My guest is film historian and writer Samm Deighan, an expert on cult cinema and one of those people who really seem to have watched it all! You'll hear about Times Square history, psychotronic cinema, and Samm's list of films that best depict this iconic era. On this very special tribute episode, Carsten & Stephen discuss the incredible contributions of beloved actor (and occasional director, musician and part-time Nova Scotian) Alan Arkin, from his earliest days onscreen in The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, Wait Until Dark and Catch-22, his '70s heyday in Little Murders and Freebie & the Bean and late career hits like Grosse Pointe Blank, Little Miss Sunshine and Argo
It's a goddamn milestone -- 400 mainline episodes over 16 years of The Flop House! (And that's not counting all of the FH Minis, and the Movie Minutes of yore!) Thus, we took a break from our usual modus operandi of watching less-artistically-successful modern movies, and we treated ourselves with one of the classics of the bad movie canon (so much so that it's the topic of the extremely enjoyable documentary Best Worst Movie). That's right: we're talking about TROLL 2, the film that has absolutely nothing to do with the original Troll other than a title and a fondness for rubber creatures!! It's been memed! It's been giffed! And now it's been Flop Housed!Wikipedia page for Troll 2Movies recommended in this episode:Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)No Hard Feelings (2023)Little Murders (1971)Ever tried Microdosing? “Things Will Be Different” The Little Murders formed out of the ashes of the punk outfit The Fiction. The Melbourne band first fired things up in 1979 and they've been crushing it ever since. Led by the British born Rob Griffiths, The Little Murders are one of those rare bands where every song is a winner. Seriously. Every single one. Their songs are hook-filled blasts of melodic pop that rips the cover off the ball every single time. Griffiths is a commanding frontman who just radiates charisma. Over the course of their brilliant career, the Murders have put out classic albums like First Light, We Should Be Home By Now, Dromona Rama and Dig For Plenty and to say they're still going strong would be an absurd understatement. They've never been better. They have a new EP out called Wait 'Til The Summer Comes, a new album on the way and a tribute album just landed called Things Will Be Different: A Tribute To The little Murders. www.littlemurders.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com

On a special double feature/dual podcast episode of 70 Movies We Saw in the 70s/Cinematalk commemorating the screenings of both films at UW Cinematheque, Ben Reiser and Jim Healy take a deep dive into a “Fistful of Feiffers”, discussing both LITTLE MURDERS (1971) and CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (1971). ‘71 was a big year for screenwriter/playwright/cartoonist Jules Feiffer, with Alan Arkin's LITTLE MURDERS and Mike Nichols' CARNAL KNOWLEDGE both hitting screens within six months of each other. Listen along as Jim and Ben try to suss out Feiffer's inspirations, figure out what genres these films do and don't fall into, Elliott Gould on top of the world, Candice Bergen's best work, waiting for Godard, Gordon Willis goes wild, Nicholson as man-baby, magnificent Ann Margret, and much more, including not one, but TWO rounds of “What else was playing that week?”.
Elliott Gould plays an “apathist” photographer and Adam Driver a confrontational comedian who take center stage - with varying degrees of enthusiasm -- as we discus Alan Arkin's early ‘70s satire Little Murders and Leos Carax's 2021 musical extravaganza Annette. “ so much of a piece, so consistent on its own terms, that while you're watching it, it doesn't even feel like satire: just real life, a little farther down the road.” -Roger Ebert What does a bleak adaption of a late 60s stage satire about the prevalence of violence in modern US American life have to do with a stylized, surrealistic Sparks-penned musical about two performers in love and their puppet baby? Is heterosexual romantic love doomed to fail? What pivotal events in act two cement the fates of these characters, and the thematic connections between these films? Who is hotter, Elliott Gould or Adam Driver? Join us for urgent answers to these burning questions, and oh so much more! Nicole tells you all about what's coming next week from The Celluloid Mirror -- puppet babies and experimental theater via Leos Carax's Annette (2021) starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, and Alan Arkin's Little Murders (1971) starring Elliott Gould and Marcia Rodd! We've got a few clips from that upcoming episode as well as listener feedback on our Josie and The Pussycats/Speed Racer Discussion. Is it fair to call the Speed Racer ninjas "evil"? It's possible we are the only people who have ever done a podcast about this movie. It also may be one of the best we've ever done. TV's Kevin is once again joined by Moviez 4 Babiez's Justin Germeroth to discuss the pitch black comic masterpiece Little Murders (1971). Alan Arkin's directorial debut is the perfect lens through which to view our current era, with equal parts bleakness and hilarity. Next week: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! www.patreon.com/tvskevin

Planning to travel? It always helps if you have the right guide. And when it comes to New York City, I have the perfect one for you today, especially if you're a film fan, because he literally just wrote the book on it. That's right, this week on the podcast, I was so honored to have back my talented friend Jason Bailey. The author of the brand new book Fun City Cinema, in this entertaining and informative episode, Jason tells us all about writing and researching his new critically acclaimed nonfiction work and breaks down a few films along the way. A gifted film writer, critic, and historian who's the editor-in-chief of the site Crooked Marquee, additionally, Jason Bailey is an author of four additional books on film, and a freelance journalist with bylines everywhere from The New York Times to Vulture to The Playlist and beyond. Tying in with both Jason's book (releasing Tuesday, October 26) as well as the outstandingly diverse New York City collection currently available on The Criterion Channel, in this installment, we zero in on The Garment Jungle (1957), The Incident (1967), The Out-of-Towners (1970), and Little Murders (1971). Jenna and Veronica are back at it – having long conversations that only barely have to do with movies! In this latest episode of Notes From the Back Row, they investigate what it is about cities that truly gives them character and the movies that best reflect that spark. Because this is Jenna and Veronica, they stick to the lakes they're used to and focus mostly on San Francisco and New York City. Oh and literally spend the first 20 minutes just talking about weird commuting stories and the evils of Capitalism. But it comes back to movies! It all comes around! Anna and Ben venture into the heretofore unknown territory of 1971, and investigate Jules Feiffer's and Alan Arkin's Little Murders. They forensically dissect the romantic power dynamics between Elliot Gould's and Marcia Rodd's characters, but come to very different conclusions about the essence and impact of Donald Sutherland's satirical preacher. If they agree, fine; if they disagree, also fine! He will not put them down for that.

Today, on American TV Icons, Alikona Bradford interviews, we feature longtime veteran Linda Lavin. Born in Portland, Maine to a musically-inclined family (her mother was once an opera singer) and on stage from the age of 5, singer/actress Linda Lavin graduated from The College of William and Mary with a theatre degree. She pounded the New York pavements in the early 1960s searching for work following some stock roles in New Jersey, and gradually made a dent within the New York musical comedy scene with roles in "Oh, Kay!" (1960), "A Family Affair," (1962), "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" (1966) (her standout number was "You've Got Possibilities") and "On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever" (1966). She also won kudos for her straight acting roles in "Little Murders" (1969 Drama Desk award) and "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" (1969 Tony nomination). A one-time member of Paul Sills' Compass Players comedy troupe back in the late 1950s, she served as a replacement in Sills' "Story Theatre" Broadway production in 1971. Television beckoned in the 1970s and utilized her singing talents in a small-screen version of Damn Yankees! (1967) starring Phil Silvers and Lee Remick. After a one-season false start as Detective Janice Wentworth on the sitcom Barney Miller (1975), it did not take long for the talented lady to become a household name in another. As the titular waitress/mother in the sitcom Alice (1976), based on the award-winning film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) starring Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, Lavin won deserved stardom. During the nine seasons (1976-1985) the show was on the air, she nabbed two Golden Globe awards and an Emmy nomination. Ever the singer, she even warbled "There's a New Girl in Town" over the opening credits of the show to the delight of her fans. Following this success, Linda lavished her attentions once again on the stage. She earned renewed respect, in addition to several critic's awards, for her diversified Broadway work in "Broadway Bound" (1987 Tony award), "Death Defying Acts" (1995 Obie award), "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1998 Tony nomination: as the high-strung Mrs. Van Daan) and "Tales of the Allergist Wife" (2000 Tony nomination). More recently, she appeared in Carol Burnett's autobiographical play "Hollywood Arms" (2002) portraying Burnett's grandmother. The piece was co-written by Burnett's late daughter, Carrie Hamilton. Linda received excellent reviews the first time around for her stage work in "Collected Stories" (2000). She later appeared in a PBS-TV version of Collected Stories (2002) and in 2010 revived it on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for her efforts. She has also occasionally directed for the stage. Linda was married and divorced twice to actors -- Ron Leibman and Kip Niven -- and in 2005 married her third husband, actor Steve Bakunas, who is also an artist and musician. Since her "Alice" heyday, the actress has again found series work, albeit the short-lived Room for Two (1992) and Conrad Bloom (1998). She has also been seen in penetrating guest parts on such established series as "The Sopranos", "Law & Order" and "The O.C." (recurring). Film nævnt i denne episode: STAGE FRIGHT (´14), CATCH 22, M*A*S*H, BREAKDOWN, GREEN ROOM, HOLMES & WATSON, SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK, THE NIGHTINGALE, FØR FROSTEN, SER DU MÅNEN DANIEL, FARGO (S4) og mange flere!!
Today our crew dives into Little Murders In 1971 Roger Ebert of the Chicago sun times gives this film 4 stars he writes "One of the reasons it works, and is indeed a definitive reflection of America's darker moods, is that it breaks audiences down into isolated individuals, vulnerable and uncertain. Most movies create a temporary sort of democracy, a community of strangers there in the darkened theater. Not this one. The movie seems to be saying that New York City has a similar effect on its citizens, and that it will get you if you don't watch out." Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune also awarded four stars and called it "a mean little comedy that made me laugh and then think, 'God, how could I laugh at that. This like oh oh oh so very many 70's films is based on a play, and as pretty much always you can tell, AND that don bother me.

Another in our continuing series of "criminally forgotten" films, Little Murders (1970) directed by actor Alan Arkin and starring Elliot Gould contains a deep political statement buried in a somewhat surrealist, trenchantly black comedy. Written by political cartoonist and screenwriter Jules Feiffer, Little Murders is remarkably prescient about the correlation of the rise of violence in society and the loss of faith in institutions, but is paradoxically very critical of those institutions at the same time. Azed and Jay use this obscure gem to get into a larger discussion around Trump, Richard Rorty and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Also, we revive a favourite segment, "movies we are ashamed we haven't seen yet", Azed admits guiltily that he just recently saw Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. As a punishment Azed has been instructed to burn all his (unread) Derrida books and rip up his Che Guevara poster.

Well hello once again, once again those Nerds have given us another episode full of fun and laughter, so strap in and hang on tight as we enjoy the rid. Please remember to keep arms inside the ride at all times to avoid injury. To start this mad cap episode we have the cast list of the new Dr. Dolittle with Robert Downey Jr. This cast has almost as many stars as the US flag. Will this be just another remake of a great movie, or will it be great? Who knows, at present all we know for sure is the cast is pretty impressive. Next up we take a moment to discuss the presence of water on the moon. That’s right water on the moon, is it H2O or OH, is there enough for a pool to soak away the long dreary hours after working all day as a janitor. Oops, that was the story for Space Quest, sorry. But the presence of water is important to plans to build a moon base for further space exploration. Last topic is about Crazy Taxi and not horrifying us with gruesome violence like the horror movie right there on our TV, called the 6 o’clock news. Smurf Bloody Smurf This week we review Deadpool 2, and it's … err … we don't know actually as that brotherhood of evil comic-book and manga fans called 4-Panel take over the airwaves in a fourth-wall-breaking stunt worthy of the mutated scamp himself. So does it live up to the original? It's not a rhetorical question this week as we genuinely have no idea. After we wrestle back control of the show it's time for Off the Shelf, which offers more orthodox business (assuming your rabbi is very open-minded). He might be up for some '70s black comedy in Indicator's reissue of Alan Arkin's directorial debut "Little Murders", but would he jack himself in for a bit of body horror with Black Label's Blu-Ray release of David Cronenberg's "eXistenZ"? Fortunately you don't need to ask him, or extend this tortured metaphor any further as Aidan and Graham are on the case. Little Murders (1971) is the most personal choice I have made for the show so far. Prior to discovering it, I don't think I had ever seen anything that so accurately summed up how I felt about a lot of things and there might be no better delivery system for… The post Episode 051 – Little Murders appeared first on The Magic Lantern.

The artist has been something of a hero before I’d even heard his name, through his illustration work in the aforementioned classic children’s book and as the screenwriter of Robert Altman’s perfectly chaotic 1980 cinematic adaptation of Popeye. Since then, Feiffer’s work has been a constant in my life, from his four decades long stint as an editorial cartoonist for the Village, to his early apprenticeship with Will Eisner, and a stint of film projects like Little Murders, the artist’s work always seems to find its way back into my life. Now in his mid-80s, the modern day renaissance cartoonist is trying his hand at an entirely new endeavor, writing and drawing his first graphic novel 69 years after he first began working his way through Eisner’s The Spirit at the tender age of 16. Kill My Mother maintains the cartoonist’s loose approach in a far more sustained form than his other cartooning works, marking yet another remarkable turn for the octogenarian. We pulled up a couple of seats in the lobby of the hotel where Feiffer was staying during Baltimore Comic Con to discuss his latest career and the important of perpetually testing one’s limitations.

Playwright Jules Feiffer, perhaps best known as a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, explains why he sees little difference between his comic work, screen work and stage work, as well as why he has no issue with his 42-year-legacy of provocative work in the "Village Voice" being called, simply, a comic strip. He also talks about his early involvement in moving from the comics to the stage, including Paul Sills' adaptation called "The Explainers" and his own "The World of Jules Feiffer", which featured the first "Passionella" musical, with a score by Stephen Sondheim; how he feels about the "Passionella" segment in "The Apple Tree" and whether he prefers the original production or the recent revival; the journey of "Little Murders" from Broadway flop to London award-winner to Off-Broadway success -- all in a two-year span; how "The White House Murder Case" started off a hit and why the audiences suddenly stopped laughing; how he came to contribute to the infamous revue "Oh! Calcutta"; what shifted his play "Carnal Knowledge" from the stage to the screen before it was ever produced, and what prompted him years later to resurrect the stage script; how his troubled personal life yielded the comedy "Knock Knock"; why "Elliot Loves" drove him from the theatre for over a decade, and why he came back with perhaps his most personal play, "A Bad Friend"; and what's happening with his long-aborning collaboration with Andrew Lippa on a stage musical of his children's book, "The Man in the Ceiling". Original air date - October 6, 2010.
