Episode 33 Hugh Kretschmer Award Winning editorial and advertising surrealist photographer   Welcome to Episode 33, Today Jake and I are talking with Award Winning editorial and advertising photographer Hugh Kretschmer.. Hugh creates incredible  photo illustrations, ranging from commercial projects to surreal Fine Art Pieces, he takes us into a world that will visually bend your mind with his surreal narratives. His photos reveal other worlds and will take you on a magical story that will move you.  That aside, his clients include the likes of Vanity Fair, New York Times, Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Fortune, Sony, Toyota, Honda and many many more... Hugh classes himself as a Photographic Illustrator, his ideas are created from an illustrators perspective and so is his process except he uses his camera as his weapon of choice to capture all of this… Introduced to photography at a young age by his father, who was a was a photo-instrumentation engineer for MacDonnell Douglas who worked on projects from the Mercury through to the Apollo missions. Hugh’s work certainly borrows from the art world and you can certainly see a hint of Rene Magritte and perhaps a hint of Salvador Dali in his concepts, but don’t be fooled thinking this is all put together in Photoshop… Oh no… this is where Hugh’s approach and work ethic is completely the opposite as he composes nearly all his work utilising the manual building process of props/ sets and recording multiple process in camera. Hugh’s mind and work are both amazing, and we don’t boast to understand it all, but visually it’s truly outstanding and mesmerising. If you’re around young people, you’ve probably heard of TikTok. In a little more than a year since it was launched, TikTok has become one of the fastest growing and most popular apps in the world. Today Jake and Erik discuss the ways youth are interacting with this video app. Then they bring on their resident expert, Erik’s teenage daughter Anna, to answer their questions and to set her father straight on a few things.

Type 2 is a podcast from Looking Sideways in association with Patagonia that explores the intersection between the outdoors, action sports and activism. My guest for this episode of Type 2 is Jake Black. Jake is a snowboarder from Colorado who initially parlayed his love for snowboarding into a professional career but he soon decided he wanted to try and give something back to the industry, and began to broaden his interests - notably as a journalist specialising in issues of sustainability in the snow industry, and then with Protect Our Winters, a none profit organisation that is the leading climate advocacy group in the winter sports world. Today Jake is Program Manager for Protect Our Winters, working to further the group’s climate aims on projects around the world. So he oversees initiatives like the Hot Planet Cool Athletes programme, the ambassador program, and basically acting as the conduit for POW US to the world. Like many people working in this sector, Jake has been motivated by his own love for the outdoors, and his personal experiences as a rider and traveller - and I was impressed with his take on the unique climate challenges faced by people in our world. So we arranged to meet later in the summer during his next trip to Europe for the European POW summit in Innsbruck. We sat down to discuss Jake’s career, his take on how to respond to the charges of hypocrisy that anybody attempting to affect change inevitably faces, and how we can reconcile these two seemingly opposing stances. Today Jake shares his story of how God made his spiritual heart alive in spring semester of 2009. He developed a hunger for God’s word and desired to walk in God’s purposes for him. Jake was on the track to teach and be involved in church planting when his life got turned upside down. He shares of his fight for survival after experiencing a heart condition which ultimately led to heart failure. He woke up from a coma with a brain injury which radically changed his ability to communicate, move, and perform daily functions. Jake shares of how his life as a follower of Jesus has changed and how his trust in God has deepened. It is evident that God is working in and through Jacob. Jake did not receive a set back with his health trauma and current disability, but he received a step forward - towards God’s purposes for him. In this interview, Jake mentions his blog - I have already been encouraged and challenged by some of Jake’s writings, admonishing believers in how to love people with disabilities well. He is also a Mental Health and Tourette's Advocate.Jake was diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome as a teenager. He has experienced depression, anxiety, OCD, ADD, and was diagnosed with PTSD at one period in my life.  According to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) 79% of persons diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome have also been diagnosed with at least one co-occurring mental health or neurodevelopmental condition). Growing up, Jake thought he would never get married and have a family because of his neurological disease. He struggled focusing in school and wasn't sure if he'd be able to succeed academically. Hise dream was to become a public speaker, but didn't think it was possible with a challenge as outwardly-evident as his. Today Jake is a married father of two, has a  master's degree, and has his own business. He was able to become a public speaker despite his Tourettes. Jake believes that nothing can stop us if we don't allow it to. In this episodes Jake opens up about his story. He tells us what it was like growing up with Tourettes (before and after the diagnosis), the effect that early attempts at medicating Tourettes had on him, how scared he was when he told his girlfriend (now his wife) that he had Tourettes, how turning to minimalism changed his life, and how he was able to write the first draft of his book in five hours!
