When you read about a global climate summit in the news, you probably don't see a lot about Jenga. But at this year's UN Biodiversity Conference (also known as COP16), the Canadian artist Benjamin Von Wong unveiled a provocative large-scale art installation called “Biodiversity Jenga,” which really got people thinking about climate change. Some of Benjamin's past work includes giant skulls made of electronic waste and a massive structure made of drinking straws. His work is accessible, whimsical and in-your-face. Benjamin talks to Tom Power about his latest installation, his “clickbait approach” to activist art, and why he believes art is a key player in the survival of our planet.

Art has the power to change and even lead the conversation, to spark curiosity and fuel real engagement. But what comes first in a powerful creative project?  The idea and the message? The tools and the talent? Or The Funding, that can make or break it all? My guest today is Benjamin Von Wong, who creates art on a grand scale that goes beyond awe. He is an Artist focused on amplifying positive impact. He does that both in the process of how he creates his art, through community, and in the images it produces, finding visual metaphors that stick with people, long after they've seen the work. His mission is to help make positive impact unforgettable. For the last seven years, Von Wong and his team, under the banner of “Unforgettable Labs” have generated over a billion organic views on topics like Ocean Plastics, Fast Fashion, and Electronic Waste for organizations like Dell, Greenpeace, Nike, Starbucks and Kiehl's. In this opening quote you can hear him wrangle with the dance between art and marketing, and his new mission to find ways to create sustainable funding streams that allow him to create message-shaping art in times and places where the world is gathered to solve some of our most pressing challenges.  It's a move that can make his work more deeply sustainable - for himself and for his team. Von Wong's The Unforgettable Project leverages the collective power of philanthropy to help build broader campaigns around environmentally net-positive innovations worth spotlighting - instead of waiting for corporations that are seeking eyeballs and leveraging their funding for good, he's building a funding source that actively seeks the next project that needs to go viral. Some of his notable work includes the Giant Plastic Tap which used trash from the slums of Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya, to demand that corporations #TurnOffThePlasticTap. The Giant Tap was displayed prominently when 193 different countries and 1,500 delegates came together at UNEA 5.2 in 2022 to discuss what was then termed the “Paris Agreement For Plastics” and was eventually used in the United Nations official Plastics Report while raising over $100,000 for the Human Needs Project. Recently he installed a grand sculpture at the Highline in New York City in collaboration with Kiehl's to raise awareness and drive adoption of refillable products in the beauty world. Von Wong, along with a large community of volunteers, collected and assembled 2 tons of plastic bottles into a “single-use hydra”, seen by nearly 300-thousand visitors and close to 3 million social impressions for their message of #DontRebuyJustRefill…but as he points out in this conversation, most of the people on the High Line don't have the leverage to change the system - which is why he seeks to place his epic art in places where the system changers meet. I learned about Benjamin's work through his wonderful talk at Creative Mornings (a global, IRL community of creatives that hosts monthly talks all around the world). His presentation spoke to some beautiful topics - like the importance of nurturing the conditions of success (like inner narratives and cultivating community) vs chasing success, and the notion of sifting your feelings from reality when it comes to deciding what is enough - personally, financially, and in the work - ie, is my work having enough impact? Von Wong shared the ways in which he's rewriting his inner narrative to balance his personhood and his purpose or impact. I found the talk profoundly moving and beautiful and highly recommend watching it. In this conversation, you'll find: Ruminations on Creationships - relationships that exist to co-create something wonderful together (4:09) The Importance of an Interface or a Container to foster Conversation (7:47) Benjamin's perspectives on going to where the conversations are already happening to have the deepest impacts. This is certainly true for the large scale work that he creates, but it is also true for anyone looking to change a big conversation. Making people come to you vs going to them means the activation energy of change is that much lower. (13:18) Benjamin's thoughts on Community Building and Co-creating art with a community (16:43) The polarity Benjamin is threading right now: Balancing Speeding Up (to do more work and have more impact) and Slowing Down (in order to build deeper creationships) (26:21) The difference between an Audience and a Community (32:44) The power of creating a word that summarizes and defines an idea that people flock to (which we might term the Rumpelstiltskin or Le Guin Rule (as she famously wrote in A Wizard of Earthsea “To weave the magic of a thing, you see, one must find its true name out.” (33:39) Head over to theconversationfactory.com/listen for full episode transcripts, links, show notes  and more key quotes and ideas. When was the last time you updated your website? Despite the popularity and traction of social media sites, having a stand-alone website to promote your work and build your brand is key to connecting with your given audience. In this week's podcast, we explore the dynamics of building and maintaining a professional caliber website with insights from both sides of the coin.  We start by chatting with website designer Alex Vita, who shares pet peeves as well as the best practices he's honed over more than 13 years of work with photo industry clients. All will benefit from Alex's insights on building a client-focused website as a way to build trust. After a break we get the artist's perspective from the illustrious photographer, environmental activist, and creative whirlwind Benjamin Von Wong, who also happens to be one of Alex's clients. Listen in as Ben and Alex discuss his web strategy and take a deep dive into the challenges of staying relevant and getting noticed in an oversaturated creative climate. We also dip into thoughts about how the evolution of AI is likely to change the future of the visual world, to make photographs the starting point for a conversation rather than its final purpose. Back in the days when I was really into photography I got to discover a wide array of incredibly talented photographers. One who undoubtedly stood out was Benjamin Von Wong. Funny enough, it's only a lot later that I found out that, despite his worldly travels and spectacular body of work, that he was local Montrealer. Ben's work as photographer and visual storyteller is nothing short of amazing. His images are an experience. He pulls you into the story and grabs your emotions with his subjects in a way that not many photographers can aspire to, let alone achieve. As a bonafied 'artivist' translating devastating data into emotional experiences, he has merged his imagery with his willingness to serve causes he believes can bring valuable change. Being quite active on social media, he has become known for his photographic projects taking aim at the environmental threats posed by fast fashion, plastics in our oceans and electronic waste. His current work lies at the intersection of fantasy and photography and combines everyday objects with shocking statistics.  It has attracted the attention of corporations, like Starbucks, Dell, and Nike and has generated over 100 million views highlighting various environmental issues, such as climate change or biodiversity loss. He was also most recently named one of Adweek's 11 content branded masterminds. His projects come together thanks to large-scale collections by an army of volunteers, resulting in spectacular installations designed to capture the imagination and provoke radical changes in our perspectives and our behaviour. Still carving his own path, and always with the same infectious smile and inspiring energy, he has made it his mission to make positive impact unforgettable. When passion meets intention and happens to be guided by purpose, it's an obviously potent and impactful mix. It it possible to change the world? Can one picture make a difference? If you take it from Von Wong's vantage point, I can assure you the answer is an engaging 'Yes'. You can connect with Ben via Instagram(@vonwong) or his official website(www.vonwong.com). Story's greatest power is not in its ability to simply convert, but its ability to connect. If you want to play the long game you must lead with connection first. In this episode, we dip into the archives of a recent Round Table conversation with Ben Stewart, co-founder of Louder Agency, Brand Messaging Strategist and Copywriter, Janelle Traister, as well as Artist and Activist and longtime friend of the STORY Community, Benjamin Von Wong. When we think about impact investing, art isn't the first thing that comes to mind for most of us. Yet investors have used art to store and grow wealth for millennia. And few of us would deny the incredible power that art possesses to change hearts and minds and to motivate us into action. Who among us wasn't touched deeply by Amanda Gorman's spoken word poem, “The Hill We Climb” at Joe Biden's inauguration earlier this year? But few of us, artists included, consider carefully how we might use our artistic talents to create, or our capital to finance, art as a force for social and environmental impact. In this episode of the podcast, I sit down with art activist and changemaker Benjamin Von Wong. Von Wong's work lies at the intersection of fantasy and photography and combines everyday objects with shocking statistics. Our guest today is the ultimate jack of all trades. A scientist, journalist, award-winning filmmaker, and most recently, tech entrepreneur — Meet Anjali Nayar. Anjali began her career as a scientist before realizing that it wasn’t the lack of facts that prevented change, but the lack of hope. This led her first into journalism, and then documentary filmmaking for award-winning films like Gun Runners and Silas, which demonstrate the human potential for transformation. One of Anjali’s latest feature documentary, Silas, highlights citizen reporters that are using smartphones to expose the land-grabs and corruption in their countries. In fact, Silas is the whole reason TIMBY came about in the first place.TIMBY, short for “This is My Backyard,” is a suite of encrypted tools created by Anjali. It is used by communities and NGO workers to document and share human rights violations in order to hold companies and governments accountable. TIMBY is used across the world by governments, the United Nations, OXFAM, WWF, and many others. In this episode, host Benjamin Von Wong speaks to Anjali about the responsibilities of storytellers around the world, how we need to re-think aid in the context of empowering communities, and how we as individuals can fight against corruption. By developing TIMBY while telling the story of Silas, it provided a long-term system to help locals solve their own problems.TIMBY operates on a SAS model, which mainly relies on revenue from subscriptions. The tool has spread to so many different countries and organizations that the TIMBY team works with whoever wants to use it to build it to work for them. The point of most tech developments is to empower people to do what they want to do quicker and better — TIMBY shows that:1. There are ways to use tech to adapt to different circumstances to help humans across the globe.2. You don’t need a background in tech to build something amazing.

In this episode, he brilliantly articulates how to create for something bigger than yourself. In this episode, we discuss:  How to shift from creating for the sake of creating over to creating because you want to have an impact. Why once we start seeing something we can’t unsee it. How fantasy can ignite a sense of curiosity, give new permissions and bring our attention back to an important issue that we’ve looked away from. Mermaid Swims in 10,000 plastic bottles as a metaphor for how plastics have impacted our lives and health. The great Pacific garbage patch. HOSTFollow Jesse Oxford, Founder and Creative Director of OX Creative@jesseoxford@oxcreateswww.oxcreates.comGUESTFollow Benjamin Von Wong@vonwongINTRO:JO: I first met Ben at the Story Conference in Nashville. He and I were both presenting there. And later on that year, we had the opportunity to collaborate together on an art installation. And as we spent time in our studio and here in Chicago, in between all the days of fabricating, of just trying to figure out creative challenges and just spending a lot of hard work and trying to build this thing. One thing that stood out to me about Ben was that he didn't just want to create work that he was proud of, but he wanted to make work that really made a difference in the world.QUOT-ABLES:BVW: There's a difference between output and outcome. And so when a brand hires a storyteller to tell a story, they're looking for an output. They just want that piece of content that they can spread. But I think when you get into the impact space and you start caring deeply about what that piece of work is going to do, it doesn't become about the output, it becomes about the outcome.  So let's take a company, Patagonia, for example. It's got this amazing brand that has done great things for the environment, they're all about environment first. But besides the people who buy a Patagonia branded jacket, to say, "I care about the environment and my money is going a little bit further, because I know it's being reinvested into something that I love, the outdoors." Why have stronger communities not spawned as a result of that?JO: Robert McKee, he wrote the book, Story, and he had a quote that says, "Stories are the currency of human relationships." And when I heard that for the first time, I was like, "Wow, stories is a currency." Is it true that there's no poverty when it comes to stories? And if that's a currency that, everybody's on the same page, everybody's equal. What comes to your mind?BVW: That's interesting. I think, my first reaction was actually the opposite of yours. So your reaction was, "If we all have the power to tell stories, then we're all equal." I went the opposite direction and went, "Well, we all might have the power to tell stories, but not all stories get the same chance to be heard. Not all stories get the same opportunities." And in which case, distribution matters, people with louder voices get heard more, not because they're better storytellers, but just because they're louder or better at using the systems in which they take place.BVW: I do think there is the common thread, regardless of language, is emotional timber, right? We have all felt love. We have all felt loss. We have all felt grief. And so if you do have the opportunity, let's remove those polarizing elements for a second, there is truly an opportunity to connect. Should we take the time or have the opportunity to, and from there can come a sense of understanding and there is no better way to do that, than story, right?BVW:  There's a difference between output and outcome. And so very much when a brand hires a storyteller, a studio, or otherwise to tell a story, they're looking for an output, they just want that piece of content that they can spread. But I think when you get into the impact space and you start caring deeply about what that piece of work is going to do, it doesn't become about the output. It becomes about the outcome. So what is the outcome of the project that you've created? How has that moved the needle in one direction or another, and why? And I think that question is the one that's missing from the general narrative. People focus very much on the output, companies measure outputs. They're all quantitative, and occasionally qualitative, but very much still driven by output as opposed to the outcome.

This is just one of the many ground-breaking concepts manifesting in the form of the World Wild resort designed by architect Bill Bensley. Bill is a renowned architect who has created some of the world’s most iconic hotels, resorts, spas, homes, and even palaces, but perhaps more importantly, he has a heart for conservation and bridging the gap between luxury and sustainability. In this episode, Bill talks to Benjamin Von Wong about his process of purchasing the property for Shinta Mani Wild and what he did to craft a one-of-a-kind experience for guests — including building the longest zip line in Southeast Asia — offering guest breathtaking views of the Tmor Rung River. As listeners will hear, both the environment and community have benefited greatly from the job opportunities created by the resort, with poachers and loggers now being recruited as rangers and able to provide for their families. Bill gets into the White Paper he wrote on the pillars of sustainable design, the kind of conversations he has with hotel owners and developers who have only profits in mind, and how he came to have a say in how the properties he designs are operated. You can also look forward to hearing Bill discuss the value of curiosity, recreational painting, and the environmental goals he hopes to achieve in the future. How is your work impacting others? Here’s the simple answer: you don’t really know for sure. We might have metrics — profit margins, Google analytics, retweets — but that’s reach, not impact. How is what you do really connecting to other people, changing them and affecting them on a heart level? Part of the reality of living in the liminal space of creativity means learning that while we’re all connected, most of those connections are invisible. That’s something Benjamin Von Wong understands really well. Von Wong’s work lies at the intersection of fantasy and photography and combines everyday objects with shocking statistics. It has attracted the attention of corporations like Starbucks, Dell, and Nike and has generated over 100 million views for causes like ocean plastics, electronic waste, and fashion pollution. Most recently, he was named one of Adweek’s 11 content branded masterminds. Don’t miss this episode of the STORY podcast where we sat down to talk to Benjamin about connection, isolation, and the thin lines between the two, and so much more.

Benjamin Von Wong is Canadian mining engineer turned social artivist/photographer who designs campaigns around social impact and has succeeded in raising over 100 million views for different causes including plastics, fast fashion and electronic waste. He has a Guinness Book Record, a community of over 500,000 followers and tries to change the world through amplifying positive impact. *Who is Benjamin Von Wong?* Von was born in Canada and his parents are first-generation Chinese Malaysian immigrants. With something of a “chaotic” childhood - he went to 13 different schools in 3 different countries - there was nothing in his background that suggested that he would end up with an artistic career. Instead, he became a mining engineer in Nevada. Until one day, driven by a breakup, he purchased his first $100 camera from Walmart. A purchase that set him down the crazy, artistic trajectory he is currently on. I just woke up one day and realized that I didn't want to be an engineer for the rest of my life. *Becoming a Photographer* The transition into being a full-time creative wasn't immediate, and some of the things we discussed included: * Why quitting his engineering job was less a question of courage, and more out of “fear” * Why photography ended up being the thing that drew him in for the long term; * How he first got his start in the industry, and the most popular platforms to use at the time; * How he ran a Kickstarter to fund his Von Wong Does Europe Tour; * Some of his projects including the 365 day project; and * Von's 3 most impactful work prior to entering the social impact space. Within 3 years, Von obtained the highly sought after global campaign with Huawei where he had to create an angel with fire wings. *Entering the Social Impact* After the Huawei campaign, he felt empty. And this signified another pivotal point in his life, only this time it was into the social impact space: * Why was it so hard to enter the social impact space? * Why was the mermaid with 10,000 plastic bottles project so successful? * How does he measure the impact of art? * Does he worry about alienating potential clients after entering the social impact space? * What is his metric of success? If you’re interested in hearing the full podcast, check out these links:Listen on Google PodcastsListen on Apple PodcastsListen on SpotifyThe power that social movements have for orchestrating change can’t be overstated, and the unique skills that artists bring to them means their help is always welcomed. For today’s discussion, we talk about the intersections between artists and movements with Will Mezner, a youth engagement leader at World Vision, Australia’s largest development NGO. Will kicks things off by giving listeners some insights into the process of how change happens in society and also talks about some of the dominant models for organizing it.We hear about how social change initiatives can scale from petitions to campaigns and then start to take on a life of their own once they become full-blown movements. Will has a bunch of great information to share about the ratios between supporters and resistors of a cause, how these change as a movement grows, and what happens at the tipping point. Our conversation then turns to the role artists can play in these movements and we talk about art’s unique power as well as consider some logistical questions about how artists can partner with NGOs to combine powers. Will makes a strong case for the concept of making good art first. By this, he means that art can make the most impact if it is already firmly rooted in a cause, rather than being tacked onto the cause of the NGO as an afterthought. He also speaks about his own experience in working on campaigns that collaborate with artists, and at which points in a movement’s growth an artist’s help can be of most use. In the end, the overarching message is that all parties who involve themselves in a cause for change should realize that they are participating in something communal because it is only in numbers that people can take a true stand!Key Points From This Episode:• Four strategies for organizing change: ‘cup of tea’, place-based, online, and distributed.• A quick study of movements that acquire a life of their own after an initial spark through the research of Saul Alinsky• A reflection on a commencement speech by Neil Gaiman that talks about the critical importance of an artist to Make Good Art.• Erica Chenoweth and the two key ingredients to a successful movement: majority and active support.• A brief introduction to Bill Moyer’s ‘movement action plan’ and the strategic frameworks that describe the 8 stages of a successful social movement.•The Inner Game and Outer Game of how artists can collaborate with campaigns through a distributed organization strategy.

Four More Years, Four More Years……… For those who do not know, FroKnowsPhoto launched on June 1st 2010 and June 1st marked the four year anniversary of the site.   Wow, I have never lasted in a job longer than a year let along four years at the same place.  I owe so much to you guys out there you continue to support all of the content. I read your e mails, I see your comments and I truly appreciate all of the support.    I took some time during this weeks show to discuss the future and where I think things are going for me and the site.  I answered questions about the last four years as well as read some of your favorite moments.  Regardless of wether you have been a reader since day one or you just found the site this week, THANK YOU.    So here is a HUGE THANK YOU for your support and to the future where ever it takes FroKnowsPhoto.com.   In honor of the four year anniversary I am going to give you a code worth $5 OFF your order of $19 or more at Store.froknowsphoto.com. The code is "4years". This sale will run until June 7th 2014. The code is good towards regularly priced items. So if you are trying to purchase a combo deal the code will not work.   I am giving Heidi control of 40 FREE thingies to randomly give away in orders. There will be a BlackRapid Strap or two, Lens Cloths, DVDs, Winter Hats, Mouse Pads and anything else she want's to give away randomly. Be sure to leave a comment in the comment section with why you should get one of those 40 random pieces of goodness.   Stephen hits us with his photo news as he has for almost a year at this point before we jump into a really interesting interview.      A few weeks back when I was in Israel I sat down with Mr. Benjamin Von Wong.  His work is “tremendous”, thought out and full of quality and imagination.  There are very few photographers out there who can think and see the world the way Von Wong does. I think you will glean some really important information from this interview.         Enjoy the show and don’t forget to subscribe on iTunes and YouTube.
