In this episode of the podcast, I chat with Fujifilm X-Photographer, Bryan Minear, a passionate documentary and landscape photographer whose creative journey is as inspiring as it is instructive. Bryan shares how he rekindled his love for photography by focusing on landscapes and personal projects that resonate deeply with his life experiences. Learn from his meticulous trip planning to White Sands and the emotional significance of his project with his son.THE BIG IDEASFind Joy in Creativity: Embrace the beginner's mindset to discover the joy in every shot. This mindset can transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary captures. Pursue Personal Projects: Personal photography projects provide a deeper connection to your work, fuel creativity, and can teach you unique lessons about storytelling. Value Planning and Spontaneity: Balance meticulous planning with the flexibility to embrace unexpected moments. Both elements contribute to capturing authentic, powerful images. Emotional Resonance: Aim to create images that evoke emotions and tell a compelling story, adding depth and meaning to your portfolio.PHOTOGRAPHY ACTION PLANBegin a Personal Project: Choose a theme that resonates with your life experiences or passions. Plan a detailed roadmap, setting milestones and goals to guide your progress.Focus on Storytelling: Identify the story you want each image to tell before pressing the shutter. Include elements in the frame that support and enhance the narrative of your photo.Schedule and Plan Shoots: Research and plan your photography trips meticulously, including contingency plans for unforeseen circumstances. Use tools like maps, apps, or online forums to scout locations and understand the best times for optimal lighting and weather conditions.Embrace Spontaneous Moments: Stay flexible and ready to capture unplanned, authentic moments that may arise during your shoots. Keep your camera accessible and practice taking quick, candid shots in various settings.Reflect and Review: After each shoot, take time to review your work, noting what worked and what could be improved. Gather feedback from peers or mentors and use it constructively to refine your approach and technique.RESOURCES:Visit Bryan Minear's Website - https://bryanminear.com/traveler/Follow Bryan Minear on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bryanminear/Learn What Camera Settings to Use in our free guide!https://perfectcamerasettings.com/ Start Building Your Dream Photography Business for FREE with CloudSpot Studio. "I never thought I would live to see 42" Alison's story is one of ultimate perspective. In her first episode on this podcast we dived into a story filled with creative perspective and intentional, thought provoking heart. Before Alison found her wedding photography on the covers of major magazines like Martha Stewart Weddings chalking up awards and international attention from a few of the largest photography brands on earth she was a grieving teenager processing the loss of her mom at 42 years old by learning to develop old film negatives of her alongside her dad in a makeshift darkroom in their house. At 13 she found out she carried the same genetic heart disorder and what she thought would be an inevitable expiration date ticked closer and closer this last year. We interview Alison on a "bonus day" in the 200's. That's 2/3 of a year after she survived the unthinkable, setting her camera aside and undergoing a full heart transplant after her heart hit nearly 100% failure. Perspective is a powerful thing. Sitting down with Alison for this interview felt altogether different and yet somehow familiar. This is still the brilliant artist with the big smile and remarkable purpose behind her work but now with literally a new heart beating inside of her chest. Don't miss this opportunity to hear her story, to lean into the lessons she's learned about how important the photos of the people we love are, and to simply listen to her process her own story and learn to accept that this new lease on life is one she never knew she would have. Alison Conklin is a Philadelphia (area) based wedding and commercial photographer. She is a Fujifilm X Photographer and her work can be seen here https://www.alisonconklin.com/ or via her Fujifilm profile page here https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/photographers/alison-conklin/ She can also be found over in the large group for the Photographic Collective, a community packed with positive, purpose filled photographers from around the globe. You can't expect yourself to power through week after week without fatigue. You can't be all things to all people. You can't perfect a process professionally and not expect it to affect how present you are personally. You can't grow without rest. This week's episode is all about your health. We're taking a mental health break from loads of amazing advice from a few of the world's most affluent artists and photographers to bring it all back to center for a moment. We all know that we are the most vulnerable to impostor syndrome, insecurity, fear, and ultimately failure when we're stretching ourselves too thin and diluting the magic that makes our work special in the first place. So this week I'm alone just talking through some of the lessons I've learned lately. What it's like to take time to hear my kids giggle, to see my wife smile, and to spend a little of the money I work so hard to earn. We've got to find balance and community if we want to grow healthy businesses that empower us to live bold, intentional lives. Step outside of the business and the editorial and the perfectly polished photoshopped images that clutter up Pinterest and nearly every magazine and blog and repost site on the internet and you're left with this one question. WHY? Why does photography matter? Why do photographers matter? Is there depth and purpose to spending a life pursuing capturing the lives of the people around us and if so - why? Alison Conklin is not only a Fujifilm X Photographer, an award winning Philly based wedding photographer with over 20 years of experience, she is also one to totally wear her heart on her sleeve. Her story as a photographer started after the tragic loss of her mom as a child and that early experience has informed so much about the value of the photographs she is asked to capture for her clients. This interview was a personal one for me filled with emotion and depth and even a few tears but more so with the vulnerability of an artist who has devoted her life to helping preserve moments for other people and a keen sense of why all of that matters so much. This week's interview is with Bobbi Lane, who has said memorably, "If you don’t have a concept then you don’t have a picture." What she means is that all the photographic technique in the world isn’t going to do you any good if you don’t have an idea for your image. Bobbi is an award-winning commercial photographer specializing in creative portraits on location and in the studio. Her corporate and editorial work includes corporate websites, annual reports, and hundreds of environmental portraits for a wide variety of magazines. She's also an amazing teacher of photography and was once my teacher. It’s easy to shoot a million pictures in digital but that doesn’t mean that you have to.  -- Bobbi LanePhotographs nowadays live amid a vast ocean of their fellow images. We consume them like potato chips, quickly flipping to the next set on Instagram. This has changed the way we consume images but not the way we make good ones. As Bobbi explains to her students, the path to making a memorable image is to be aware of everything in the frame. Don't rely on post-production too much -- get the image you want when you snap the shutter. You have to love your project. If you don't love it, why shoot it?Bobbi is a Fujifilm X Photographer and does presentations for Fuji around the country. She teaches at the International Center for Photography in New York City, Los Angeles Center of Photography, and the Light Factory in North Carolina. With her husband, Lee Varis, she teaches daylong workshops at Hunts Camera just outside of Boston four or five times a year.On the call, Bobbi and I talk about her trips to Venice for Carnival -- this year was her eighth trip. She does a regular series of photo travel tours. This summer she's taking a small group to Tanzania during the wildebeest migration. In September she's headed back to Iceland for her second photo trip. Next January she will be returning to Myanmar for her second trip. In February, she'll be back in Venice. She and Lee have a website (http://bobbiandleesphotoadventures.com/) and it lists all their upcoming workshops and events, and has a variety of image galleries about places they've been. Her Instagram is worth a look. It has a pretty rad icon of her holding a falcon. Thanks for listening,Lee Get full access to 500 Words at 500words.substack.com/subscribe

This week since I'm not feeling that great, rather than have no episode, I decided to rerun one of our earlier shows with an interview with photographer and podcaster, Marco Larousse. Tom and I interviewed Marco over two episodes but I glued them together to make it just one show. Yes, that means Tom is back! Here are the show notes from those episodes: Marco started taking pictures as a young teen and has never looked back. Digital and film are part of his repertoire and despite some of the differences shooting in Germany versus the U.S. (particularly with privacy laws), Marco and the Switch to Manual guys find they share the same passion for capturing images from the street. His striking photography along with his Fuji X Files blog (where he shares techniques, tips, and reviews of Fujifilm's great X-series cameras) helped him gain a rare slot as an official Fujifilm X Photographer. Marco's work can be found on his website where you can also check out his Fuji X Files blog. In each episode, they introduce you to an inspirational photographer of the month and also share an inspirational photo book of the month.

In recognition of our B&H Photography Podcast FUJIFILM X-H1 Sweepstakes (and because we were at Podcast Movement 2018 this week) we are presenting an encore episode of our Dance Photography episode with the incredible Lois Greenfield and FUJIFILM X-Photographer Omar Z. Robles.  Follow the link above to enter our sweepstakes for a chance to win a FUJIFILM X-H1 Camera with the FUJINON XF35mmF2 R WR Lens or the FUJIFILM X-E3 Camera with the FUJINON XF23mmF2 R WR Lens and enjoy this insightful conversation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are dance and photography natural enemies? Of course not, but one art form is about the still, captured moment, and the other about choreographed movement and fluidity, yet anyone who truly understands photography knows the importance of timing, grace, and harmony, and a dancer must also recognize the relevance of rest and static. Sculpture, or perhaps gesture, is their common bond and our two guests know well the significance of gesture and the conflicting and compatible characteristics of dance and photography. They join us on the B&H Photography Podcast to talk about their distinctive work and shooting styles. Lois Greenfield is one of the recognized masters of the craft, having developed a singular style sought by the world’s most renowned dance companies, and Omar Z Robles, an official Fujifilm X-Photographer, brings a fresh take, blending aspects of documentary and street photography. Enjoy this episode as we discuss improvisation, inspiration, dodging taxis and, of course, lighting systems and camera and lens choices. Guests: Lois Greenfield and Omar Z. Having photographed in Egypt, Tibet, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives, Philippines, Malaysia to name a few, it is clear Matt doesn’t have an issue with travel.Matt is also a key member of the International Guild of Visual Peacemakers, he’s on the advisory board for Focus for Humanity and on the design board for Think Tank Photo, a camera bag manufacturer. Matt is also proud to be a Fujifilm X-Photographer.Amongst the topics discussed were the importance of the human form in composition, how to meld in with the crowd, what elements contribute to stronger photos, how to create narrative depth through layering of various elements. Join the Switch to Manual guys for the second half of their interview with Hamburg-based street shooter, Marco Larousse. This week, Tom and Antonio single out some of their favorite images from Marco's work, eliciting some background anecdotes and insights from the photographer himself. If you like to shoot on the street (or want to and are trying to muster the courage), these two episodes are for you! Marco started taking pictures as a young teen and has never looked back. Digital and film are part of his repertoire and despite some of the differences shooting in Germany versus the U.S. (particularly with privacy laws), Marco and the Switch to Manual guys find they share the same passion for capturing images from the street. His striking photography along with his Fuji X Files blog (where he shares techniques, tips and reviews of Fujifilm's great X-series cameras) helped him gain a rare slot as an official Fujifilm X Photographer. Marco's work can be found on his website where you can also check out his Fuji X Files blog. It's a  wonderful resource if you own a Fuji X camera and if you don't own one, you'll probably going to want to get one after reading it. Marco can also be found on Twitter and on Flickr.
