Morgan Housel once looked back at his twenties as a carefree, simple time, living in a beautiful apartment with his wife. But she quickly reminded him how anxious he truly was. His nostalgia had erased the uncertainty he once felt, just like how investors look back at past market growth and assume success was inevitable. In this episode, Morgan explains why the past is never as clear as we remember and why the future won't be either. He also shares how entrepreneurs can build wealth despite uncertainty, the key to long-term success in the stock market, and practical strategies for sustainable financial planning. In this episode, Hala and Morgan will discuss:  (00:00) Introduction (02:14) Why Most Financial Resolutions Fail (04:06) Balancing Saving and Spending Habits (09:15) The Power of Long-Term Investing (13:30) Navigating Startup Risks Wisely (15:49) What Sets Genius Entrepreneurs Apart (18:50) Why Doubt Is Necessary for Entrepreneurs (22:23) How Hindsight Can Misguide Investors (29:22) Wealth Inequality in the Social Media Era (34:36) Turning Anxiety About the Future into Action (40:23) The Financial Mistakes We Keep Repeating (48:38) Elon Musk's Extreme Risk-Taking Strategy (50:42) Embracing Failure for Lasting Success (53:55) How Rumors Shape Financial Markets Morgan Housel is an investor, partner at The Collaborative Fund, and author of the New York Times bestsellers The Psychology of Money and Same As Ever. Are you following the truth or are you following incentives that may cause you to turn your back on Christianity and throw Jesus under the bus? On this midweek podcast episode, Frank continues the conversation on the powerful incentives that often prevent us from denying ourselves and picking up our cross for Christ as we go through our daily lives. He'll answer questions like:What does FOMO (the fear of missing out) reveal about our underlying motivations? Why does the question, "If Christianity were true, would you be a Christian?" often reveal a non-believer's true intentions and desires? What did Norman Geisler mean when he said, "Fraternity will almost always overcome theology."?What are some examples from the Bible when people follow incentives instead of following Christ?Near the end of the program, Frank addresses two listener questions related to this topic--one from an Indian American who is struggling to commit to Christianity because his family wants him to embrace his Hindu roots, and the second from a Muslim seeking clarification on some differences between the Quran and the Bible. There's no doubt that following Christ is ever an easy decision to make, and even Christians are susceptible to falling off the rails for the sake of convenience and not ruffling any feathers. But we hope this episode will encourage you no matter where you are on your journey with Jesus!Truth or Incentives? Have you ever taken the time to reflect on what it is that primarily motivates all of us to make decisions? Is it based on what's objectively true or what we find attractive? Are we following facts or are we more inclined to follow our desires and self-preservation?It's a brand-new year, and since many of us set goals for 2025, Frank is kicking things off with an investigation into how incentives can often lead both Christians and non-Christians away from the truth. Listen as Frank answers questions like:Is it possible to pursue your self-interests and reason at the same time? What are the 3 incentives that cause people to sin and what makes them so powerful? Are incentives inherently wrong? How do "normal" people become proponents and active participants of genocide?Where do we see examples of incentives in our schools, workplace, and health care system? What is the root cause of bad economic policy here in the United States and all over the world? What's the 2nd most important truth in the Bible for our culture today? Why do many pastors avoid talking about controversial issues? What's the driving force on social media that often causes both kids and adults to throw Jesus and Christianity under the bus?Let's face it, we're all tempted to do the wrong thing for what we tell ourselves are good reasons, but in reality we are incentivized to lie to ourselves. When incentives push you to lie or follow what you find attractive, will you be committed to denying yourself and following Christ? Or will you conform to the cultural norms, compromising the truth for comfort and acceptance like so many people of the past and present? Tough question that even Peter failed to answer rightly. Could the financial strategies that appear flawless on paper be leading us astray in the real world? We're peeling back the layers of investment principles to reveal why some inefficiencies might just be your portfolio's best friends. Taking a page from Morgan Housel's "Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes," we delve into the unexpected virtues of financial buffers and the fallacy that cost always equates to value. Discover how the pandemic's strain on just-in-time manufacturing shines a light on the need for slack in our systems, and why the presence of an emergency fund during economic highs could save you during the lows. Plus, we discuss the underrated advantages of investment advisors, challenging the penny-pinching mindset to embrace quality that pays off in the long run. Then, we shift gears to a provocative study that upends conventional retirement planning wisdom—should you stockpile equities all the way to your golden years? We dissect the enticing, yet nerve-wracking notion of an all-equity portfolio and confront the harsh truths about our own risk tolerances and financial aspirations. It's not just about the potential gains; it's the psychological rollercoaster and the necessity for a tailored asset mix that fits like a glove. As I advocate for a well-rounded investment strategy, consider this your invitation to explore how aligning your portfolio with your personal narrative could be the smartest financial move you make. Social media can lead to inflated expectations and feelings of inadequacy. Envy and the pursuit of status and success can hinder happiness. Unforeseen consequences and tail risks play a significant role in shaping our lives. Personal experiences can shape our perception of risk and influence our decision-making. Economic forecasts are in high demand because they reduce uncertainty, even if their track record is poor. Calm periods in the economy or markets can lead to instability and eventual crises. Simplicity and endurance are key to successful long-term investing. Charlie Munger's legacy lies in his wisdom and willingness to share it with others. A kiss can be very powerful. It can make you feel wonderful and connect you to a person – or it can really mess things up. This episode begins with some interesting intel about the power of a kiss, both good and bad. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-we-kiss/ Change is sexy and exciting – and it can also be your worst enemy. On the other hand, there are some things that never change. You can count on them. And perhaps paying more attention to things that stay the same can be a huge benefit to your life and well-being. It is likely better than trying to predict what changes are coming since humans are particularly horrible at such predictions. Here to make the case for embracing things that stay the same is Morgan Housel. He is a partner at The Collaborative Fund and author of the book Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes (https://amzn.to/3SwWn6u). This is a conversation that will bring you a new perspective on how the world works and how people live. Complaining about the healthcare system is easy. Many people feel it is really hard to develop much of a relationship with their doctor when visits are so short and it's often hard to get an appointment. So perhaps it is up to us – the patients - to squeeze out as much as we can from the healthcare system to get better care and a stronger doctor/patient bond. Joining me to explain how to best do that is Ken Redcross, MD. He is author of the book, Bond: The 4 Cornerstones of a Lasting and Caring Relationship with Your Doctor (https://amzn.to/461Zh6l) and founder of Redcross Concierge, a personalized medical practice designed to enhance the patient-doctor relationship. Listen and you will be much better equipped to interact with the healthcare system. Having little kids is actually good for your immune system. In fact, the more kids the better. How can that be? To figure out what will happen in the future, we typically make guesswork predictions and look to particular periods in the past that seem like potential parallels. My guest says that to figure out what will happen next, and how best to navigate that coming landscape, the best things to consider are those that have been true in every time, and will be true until the end of it.Morgan Housel is a venture capitalist and the author of Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes. Today on the show we talk about ideas and principles that never change that can help you be successful in an ever-changing world, including how the biggest risks are those you can't see, how the idea of compound interest applies beyond your finances, how your expectations can sabotage your happiness, why you need to learn to accept that things are supposed to be hard, and how success can lead to failure. Morgan also shares his rubric for choosing your reading, what genres of books he finds most useful for improving long-term thinking, and two books he especially recommends for broadening your perspective.Resources Related to the PodcastMorgan's previous appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #659 — Do You Want to Be Rich or Wealthy? My new book, Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes, is out today. Books are hard, a multi-year slog from start to finish. But I'm excited for you to read this. I think it's the best writing I've ever done. And it was fun to write! My hope is that you enjoy reading it half as much as I enjoyed writing it. My first book, The Psychology of Money, was really about how you, the individual behave. Same As Ever is about how we, the collective, behave, and what we keep doing over and over. It's 23 short stories about what never changes in a changing world. I've been thinking about this book for my entire career. I've always been skeptical of forecasts, because the world's track record on predicting the next recession, the next election, or the next technology is so bad. That should draw you to the question: What's never going to change? What do we know for certain is going to be part of our future?

Today, we are going behind the scenes with a master of his craft, Morgan Housel. In the investing world that Matt and I are from, there are few – if any – who make better content than Morgan. His blog has been a personal favourite for years and his first book, The Psychology of Money, just crossed 3 million sales. So we reached out to see if he'd take us behind the scenes. Where does he write, when does he write, how much is art, how much science. To get into those details, we took a blog Morgan wrote in late 2017 called The Freakishly Strong Base and used that as a case study to explore his craft. It's one of my favourite pieces he's written and focuses on compounding in nature, business, and investing. At this point you might like to hit pause and read, or re-read, The Freakishly Strong Base on the Collab fund website. Then come back here to learn how Morgan writes magic like this. For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here. ----- This episode is brought to you by Scribe. Scribe is the presenting sponsor of this episode of Making Media and the magic behind the Colossus transcripts. One of the best decisions we made at Colossus was transcribing all of our audio into a searchable transcript library. We had been using another provider up until the summer of 2022 but we were constantly having issues with accuracy if our audio was just the slightest bit impaired. Whether it's training sessions, internal Q&As, or for media purposes, the value of transcripts is huge. And we are not alone. Scribe is the transcription service that powers all of S&P Global - like CapIQ - and the client list includes our friends at Tegus.
