It may be episode 169 (nice), but the topics of these chapters are distinctively Not Nice! They're actually quite sad! Sam flies a plane (notably, without a license, which stresses Erin out) to drop Hearth, Magnus, and Stone Blitz off in Alfheim, to see a guy about a hot stone. The guy with the hot stone is unfortunately Hearth's abusive father. We hate Mr. Alderman. He would probably be into the Alpha Male culture if he was a human. We get to learn a lot about elf culture and society, and get a glimpse into Hearth's not-so-nice childhood. Let's get started! ----------------- The Hidden Dangers of Being Too Nice Is it possible that being too nice can actually harm you and negatively impact those around you? While it might sound counterintuitive, especially since being nice often feels like the right thing to do, excessive niceness can cause significant problems in your life. Let's explore how this happens and what you can do to shift this pattern. When people think of being nice, they associate it with positive traits like kindness, compassion, and consideration. However, niceness often stems from fear—fear of upsetting others, fear of rejection, and fear of conflict. This fear-driven niceness leads to several significant issues: Difficulty Saying No Being overly nice often means you have a hard time saying no. You accommodate everyone's needs and requests, leaving yourself overcommitted and burnt out. When you constantly say yes to others, you neglect your own needs, leading to stress and resentment. Over time, this can damage your relationships as you may feel unappreciated and taken for granted. Suppressed Emotions Nice people tend to suppress their true feelings to avoid conflict. You might avoid expressing when something bothers you, which leads to bottled-up emotions. This suppression can cause chronic stress, physical ailments like headaches, stomach problems, and even a weakened immune system. Research shows that emotional suppression can increase your risk of all-cause mortality by 4x over 12 years. Living in Fear Constantly worrying about others' opinions creates a fearful existence. This fear of disapproval or conflict can lead to chronic anxiety, making everyday interactions stressful. This background anxiety drains your energy and affects your overall well-being. Negative Role Modeling If you have children or are in a position of influence, your excessive niceness can model unhealthy behaviors. Children learn from observing adults, and if they see you constantly putting others' needs above your own and avoiding conflict, they may adopt these same behaviors. This can lead to them struggling with self-advocacy and personal boundaries in their own lives. Embrace Authenticity Over Niceness The solution isn't to become a jerk but to embrace authenticity. Being authentic means expressing your true feelings and needs honestly and respectfully. Here's how you can start: Set Boundaries Learn to say no when necessary. Setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining your mental and physical health. It's not selfish; it's essential for self-care. Express Your Feelings Practice sharing your thoughts and feelings, even when they might cause discomfort. This honesty builds trust and deeper connections with others. Challenge Fear-Based Thinking Work on recognizing when fear is driving your actions. Remind yourself that you can handle others' reactions and that their approval isn't necessary for your self-worth. Be a Positive Role Model Show others, especially younger people, that it's okay to prioritize self-care and to speak up for themselves. This modeling helps them develop healthier relationship dynamics. Take Action Today If you want to delve deeper into breaking the pattern of excessive niceness, check out my book Not Nice. It provides practical steps to help you embrace your authentic self. For more actionable advice, my book Less Nice More You offers a direct approach to making these changes. For those seeking significant, life-changing transformations, consider joining my 12-month mastermind program, The Unstoppable Confidence Mastermind. This program is designed to radically boost your confidence and assertiveness in every area of your life. Learn more at draziz.com. Final Thoughts Being too nice can be detrimental to your well-being and the well-being of those around you. Embrace your authenticity, set healthy boundaries, and express your true self. By doing so, you'll not only improve your own life but also set a positive example for others. Until we speak again, may you have the courage to be who you are and to know on a deep level that you are awesome.

In this week's conversation, we speak with Lance Foster, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. You know when you hear an idea and it hits you like “Oh my gosh, of course”? Well, that was my reaction when I heard Lance Foster talking on NPR about the work he is doing in gaining rights and legal standing for natural entities, like rivers. Yes. Rivers. And specifically like the river he lives near, the mighty Missouri! Lance walks us through what this all means, and why gaining civil rights for natural entities isn't just about protecting their health against pollution and climate change, but because of what systems like rivers are; beings that hold within them a whole world. A world much like our human bodies. An entity with Spirit. Thanks so much to Lance for his depth of insight and for offering us a new (or not so new) way of seeing the world. Seeing rivers, mountains, forests, and even, our trucks. Lots of Love. Show Notes: Documentary “From the Heart of the World” “It's Not Nice to Fool Mother Nature”

Have you ever wondered why being 'too nice' can sometimes backfire, especially in your closest relationships? It might seem counterintuitive, but excessive niceness can actually harm your connections with friends, romantic partners, and even colleagues. In this episode, Dr. Aziz uncovers the ironic truth about our attempts to foster better relationships through being overly accommodating. He explains why this strategy might seem effective on the surface but fails to bring genuine intimacy or understanding. As we explore this concept, Dr. Aziz relates it to his upcoming virtual event, 'Not Nice Live.' If you've been inspired by his books "Not Nice" and "Less Nice, More You," but struggle to implement real changes in your life, this episode is a must-listen. Discover why understanding the theory of 'being less nice' is just the first step and how actual transformation requires more than just intellectual grasp. Dr. Aziz shares a powerful personal story about his uncle, drawing a compelling analogy between his uncle's smoking addiction and our own habits of niceness. This episode will make you question: Are there behaviors in your life, akin to smoking, that you continue despite knowing they're detrimental? Dr. Aziz's insights into the parallels between these habits and our approach to relationships are eye-opening. Moreover, he dives into a real-life example from his practice, illustrating how niceness can erode the foundations of a relationship. He uses the metaphor of 'AR glasses' to explain how we often don't interact with the actual person in front of us but rather with a version colored by our past experiences and fears. But it's not all about identifying the problem; Dr. Aziz guides you towards the solution. He challenges you to ask yourself, "What is the mature, psychologically healthy way to behave in this situation?" Whether it's with a partner, a friend, or in a professional setting, understanding and acting on this question can be the first step toward healthier, more authentic relationships. This episode is not just a discussion; it's a call to action. Dr. Aziz invites you to join him at 'Not Nice Live' for a deep dive into transforming your patterns and truly embodying the change. He emphasizes the power of support and community in making significant life shifts - something books and solitary learning can't always provide. So, if you're ready to break out of the 'nice' cage and embrace your true self, this episode is your gateway. Tune in, challenge your perceptions, and start your journey toward more genuine and fulfilling relationships. Remember, being authentically you is the key, and it's never too late to start. Join us, and let's explore how you can be less nice and more you!

Summer House Discussion ~1hr 29 min markDeepti, Haley and Larkyn are back to talk all things Scandoval and Danielle/Lindsay/Carl with Summer House! They briefly chat about how great the new Netflix show Jewish Matchmaking is (new PCP episode on JMM will be up this week!) and how compared to Sima Auntie on Indian Matchmaking, the Jewish Matchmaker is a WHIZ! Larkyn decided everyone is going to need an addiction intervention for Vanderpump Rules when the season finally ends b/c it's still SO good and just keeps getting better. They discuss how it can be that Ariana did NOT know about the affair; what is HAPPENING in Raquel's head and loads of thoughts on her pageant life; why Katie does not deserve THAT much ire anymore; how Lala TOTALLY redeemed herself in the last couple episodes; that James Kennedy is SO HYSTERICAL and Deepti thinks he deserves an Emmy for his humor (but Deepti IS NOT condoning any past problematic behavior!); and of course what would an episode of PCP be without talking at length about how HORRIBLE both Toms are. On Summer House, it is just very difficult/compelling to watch Danielle LOSE HER MIND over the Carl & Lindsay of it all. The way she is handling it has entered crazy land, despite the fact that she "deserves" to feel hurt by Lindsay. Kory likes garbage right wingers on social media - YUCK. And also, Lindsay and Carl should not invite most of the cast to their wedding b/c they are just NOT NICE to them!

Questions are one of the most powerful mindset tools that we have in our arsenal… and yet many of us are letting this tool go on autopilot. Which… our autopilot as a perfectionist is NOT NICE! In this episode, Nicole walks you through 11 of the most powerful questions that she asks herself on a regular basis and she encourages you to take 3 that work best for you! The Questions: How can I have fun with this? If I was required to think outside of the box to achieve this goal, what would I do? Is this actually important/needed to move the needle forward? Is this a 20% task or an 80% task? Am I going after this with urgency or gratitude? Why do I feel like this needs to happen right away, what if I trusted the process and let go of my own time table? What if this was easy? Am I rushing for a valid reason or a made up one? Does this align with my values? Why do I feel like this needs to be perfect? Why do I feel like I need to be perfect? What would future YOUR NAME believe about this / believe about herself/himself/themselves? Is this worth me buying my time back? What am I grateful for? It's Not Nice to Lie in a Pleading Earnest A. Davis sued a car repair shop, its manager, and his car insurance company alleging they engaged in a ploy to damage his convertible Porsche so that he couldn't afford to repair it and another customer of the repair shop could purchase it. On appeal, he challenges the trial judge's rulings sustaining the defendants' demurrers and dismissing his lawsuit in its entirety. In Earnest A. Davis v. Government Employees Insurance Company et al., E074317, California Court of Appeals, Fourth District, Second Division (August 15, 2022) the trial court gave the plaintiff four chances to plead a cause of action against the defendants although he admitted to accrual and a suit filed after running of the statute of limitations. FACTS Before his claims were dismissed on demurrer, Davis filed four complaints over the course of his litigation. For a short time-to defend against the first round of demurrers-Davis was represented by counsel. For the remainder of the litigation, he represented himself, as he does on appeal. The First Amended Complaint (FAC) The FAC, filed on July 2, 2018, makes the same basic allegations of misconduct against Walter's but asserts a total of 12 causes of action. Like the original complaint, the FAC did not name GEICO as a defendant or make any allegations of wrongdoing against the insurance company. Rather, Davis alleged only that GEICO had authorized and paid for the repairs, and later, had declared the car a total loss with the DMV in reliance on misinformation from Walter's. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/barry-zalma/support

I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. There are many leadership principles for emerging leaders to choose from as they embark on their leadership journey. And while each of the principles has their own unique take on how to lead, there are many overlays. Such as: Be honest, be fair, be transparent, be kind.Emerging leaders often feel overwhelmed in their new role, trying to balance the team goals, their own personal goals, the team dynamic, etc. In the midst of this balancing act, there is often team conflict, and most often, the emerging leader will be overly kind, trying to ‘kill' the conflict with kindness. The thing is, this tactic rarely works, and so, in this episode, you'll hear from Dr. Marcia Sirota, a board-certified psychiatrist, author and professional speaker who will talk about Ruthless Compassion as a Kindness Leader. We'll hear how emerging leaders can create a space where compassion and kindness are principal team attributes of cohesive and effective team. If you find it hard to be assertive, directly ask for what you want, or say "no" to others, then you just might be suffering from too much niceness. In this book, world-renowned confidence expert, Dr. Aziz Gazipura, takes an incisive look at the concept of nice. Through his typical style, Dr. Aziz uses engaging stories, humor, and disarming vulnerability to cut through the nice conditioning and liberate the boldest, expressive, authentic version of you. You'll discover how to: => Easily say "no" when you want to and need to. => Confidently and effectively ask for what you want. => Speak up more freely in all your relationships. => Eliminate feelings of guilt, anxiety, and worry about what others will think. Being nice does not come out of goodness or high morals. It comes out of a fear of displeasing others and receiving their disapproval. "Not Nice" by Dr. Aziz Gazipura is what I recommend for you. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-kaagee-mante/message

This time around we have what a 1980s television marketing whiz would call a “Very Special Episode” of the podcast. And that’s because what is normally the intro is actually half the show – and there’s an important reason why. It’s because Melissa has had some things she’s been wanting to say for a while about kindness – being nice – and those things came to the fore this past week in the form of vaccine side effects and a particularly icky email she received from a clearly unhappy person. So in addition to the usual than-yous (and a dynamite discussion on one of America’s longest-operating travel-stop businesses), during the first half of this episode Melissa holds forth on an important fact of life – that kindness is the fuel of any well-lived life. And how much the kindness of you Tip-Sters means to her and Producer Mark. The second half – this week’s case – is about the tragedy of three friends – two of whom were murdered only because they happened to be friends with the third. Gail Moody and Lori Arrowood were both raped, strangled to death and tossed into the woods, three years apart, in two separate but nearby towns in Souhern Georgia. Gail’s body has never been found. But three years later, when Lori was murdered, her body was found. And it didn’t take long for law enforcement to focus on, and arrest, a former corrections officer named Ken Lumpkin, who confessed, was convicted of Lori’s murder and sentenced to Life Without Parole. And during the Lori Arrowood murder investigation, an unexpected connection to Gail Moody’s death was revealed. Turns out that Ken Lumpkin had a wife – Shelly. And Shelly had been friends with both Gail and Lori. And unknown to Shelly, her friendship with the two women cost them their lives – at the hands of a man she never imagined to be a killer. Get ready for a fast-paced, engrossing and downright stirring visit with Melissa as she not only shares some of her most dearly-held thoughts – but relates the ultimate story of a very bad man being very Not Nice.

World Kindness Day is November 13th and has been celebrated in many countries around the world since 1998. World Kindness Day was developed to promote good deeds in communities and focus on how kindness binds us together. Around the world are efforts to encourage “random acts of kindness” for others and acting in a more kind way. We decided to look at kindness in general through a behavioral science lens. Webster’s definition of “kind” is “of a sympathetic or helpful nature; being gentle.” In other words, kindness is basically doing something nice for someone. A Mother Jones article about World Kindness day, by Daniel King, states, “Don’t worry, kindness is not niceness,” so we looked at how the University of Santa Clara differentiates between KIND and NICE. They used an example of how holding the door for others can be described as either “nice” or “kind.” If the underlying motivation is to create a favorable impression for the purpose of asking for a favor later, then the action can be considered NICE due to its pleasing effect. On the other hand, if the motivation is to spare the other person from extra effort or inconvenience, then the action can be considered KIND (as well as nice) if it pleases the other person. We encourage each and every one of you around the world today to show some act of kindness to a loved one, friend or stranger. And we hope you enjoy this episode. © 2020 Behavioral Grooves Links Science Made Fun: Celebrating World Kindness Day: https://sciencemadefun.net/blog/world-kindness-day/ World Kindness Day: https://worldkindness.org/be-involved/ Mother Jones: Kindness Day is Actually a Day: https://www.motherjones.com/recharge/2020/10/world-kindness-day/ World Kindness Day in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Kindness_Day Psychology Today: The Importance of Kindness: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/pieces-mind/201712/the-importance-kindness Time: Random Acts of Kindness make Marriage Better: https://time.com/4674982/kindness-compassion-marriage/ Rewards of Kindness Hui, B. Do you struggle with being assertive? Do you find it hard to strike up a conversation with someone? Hard to voice your opinion at work? Do you find it difficult or impossible to get motivated. Well dang you have come to the right place today because we are talking all about confidence. On this episode we chat with Dr. Aziz Gazipura a Clinical Psychologist and Confidence Coach. Dr. Aziz has not always been a confidence expert, in fact, he spent years stuck in social anxiety and shyness. It was facing some of his challenges head on that led him to building his skill and building his practice of supporting others in building their own confidence. Dr. Aziz was on an episode of the Lessons From a Quitter Podcast with Goli (my first guest) and I loved the interview so much and wanted to discuss more. He is the author of several books including The Solution to Social Anxiety, The Art of Extraordinary Confidence, Not Nice and his newest book On My Own Side which we chat about today. We all know someone who exudes confidence. Sometimes too much is off putting but there are some people who do it well and that is what we usually envy. As an extroverted person, I can sometimes be mistaken for being confident because I am not shy. But the fact of the matter is, I am a hot mess and often hide behind humour. Some days, I can face anything. But most days, I question everything I do, I never think that I or my work are good enough, and can experience debilitating anxiety. But one thing I k now for sure though, is that confidence is not just a personality trait based on your upbringing or birth month or socioeconomic status. It is a skill that can be practiced and learned. Just like other skills, some pick it up quickly, others may need more practice and support. From dating to public speaking, self esteem and inner critics we cover a lot of topics and ways to build up your confidence and become a more authentic you. You deserve to be your happiest, truest self so let's lay out a road map of ways to get there! On this episode we chat: The threshold that took him from shy guy to the pursuit of confidence Ways to develop motivation Social anxiety & self esteem His new book On My Own Side And so much more! Dr. Aziz Gazipura is author of a great book, Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty... And Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, And Unapologetically Being Yourself. What does it mean to be a "good person?" If someone asks you to do something, do you have to do it? If someone invites you to hang out, do you have to make the time? If someone shares an idea, do you have to pretend to like it? Some people think that to be a "good person," you have to be “nice.” You can’t make someone upset. You can’t hurt their feelings. So you withhold criticism, you don’t express what you want. Eventually, you start to forget who you are, what’s important to you, and what you truly want to get out of your life. You'll be a better person if you aren't too "nice" If you’re going to love your work, you need to be authentic. And that’s hard to do if you’re too busy people pleasing to think about what it is you want. To be a good person, you don’t have to be “nice” – at least not in the way many people think about what it means to be nice. In fact, to be a good person, you can’t be too “nice." How being treated "not nice" led to a breakthrough in my career I can think of a time when someone was not “nice” to me, and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was trying to come up with an idea to present at the SXSW conference. I wasn’t famous for anything, but I had a number of accomplished friends who were authors or ran successful businesses. So what do you do when you have no credibility, but you know people who do? You put together a panel. You get well-known people together, and moderate a discussion amongst them. So I came up with an idea for a panel, and I pitched it over email to one of my accomplished friends. He got back to me almost immediately. I still have the email. It said, "Hey man, I appreciate the intro but I don't think this is the best fit for me.” I was really devastated for the rest of that day. But the very next day, I looked back over this email, hated my life, and sighed. I really felt like a loser. Finally, I said to myself, “okay, enough bellyaching. Time to come up with a different idea.” This sounds like I’m making this up, but I swear this is 100% true. The very next moment – the very next idea I had – was for me to do a talk called “Design for Hackers.” Through the process of pitching that idea to SXSW, I got my first book deal. To write a book called Design for Hackers. That launched my career as an author. That changed my life. That took me from being just another nobody to a respected, published, best-selling author. It was all possible because my friend was not “nice.” He didn’t try to protect my feelings. He didn’t try to go along with something that wasn’t right for him. He was authentic. By being authentic, he freed me up to be authentic. If he hadn’t been honest, or if he had gone along with my first idea, just to be “nice,” I would have been caught up doing something that wasn’t right for me. By doing what was right for him, my friend allowed me to do what was right for me. Do what's right for others, by doing what's right for you But how do you find the courage to do what’s right for you, even if it might upset people in the short term? I loved Not Nice so much. It really helped me see the ways I am too nice in my life. It helped me see how that doesn’t just hurt me, but it hurts others, too. More important, it helped me see the fear and desire for approval at the root of my motivations to be too “nice." In this conversation, you’ll learn: Dr. Aziz says, only apologize "when you act out of accordance with your own values.” Easier said than done? Dr. Aziz will show you how to start with an “apology fast." Dr. Aziz says "someone having hurt feelings does not automatically equal you doing something wrong…. You could hurt someone's feelings by giving them a compliment.” Learn how to let go of “over-responsibility.” You’ll be more authentic, and you’ll ultimately help others get what they truly want. Dr. Aziz says "If you haven't asserted yourself very much...the idea that you're going to somehow glide into this really smooth way telling people no and asking for what you want, is a fantasy that's trying to deny the growth that's needed.” Learn what you can do today to start getting comfortable saying no, ultimately have clearer boundaries, and living a more authentic life. “Here’s the thing. You are not responsible for other people’s feelings. They’re not incompetent children. They’re adults who can handle their own feelings. They can work through disappointment, hurt, anger, sadness, and upset. In fact, doing so will make them stronger and healthier in the long run. You cannot stop others from feeling all discomfort, or all pain. It is an impossible task, a fool’s errand.” ― Aziz Gazipura, Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty... And Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, And Unapologetically Being Yourself There are four main models of how anxiety is caused. The first three are fairly obvious: Exposure — we get anxious about the things we avoid Cognitive — our irrational thoughts can make us more anxious Biological — changes in our biochemistry can make us more anxious The fourth however, is a little harder to grasp: "The hidden emotion model." This model stipulates that we can get anxious because there are very obvious things in our life that we are not addressing. The hidden emotion model, is really just another way of saying "niceness." When we are "nice" we let things slide, we don't speak up, we suppress our emotions, we make sacrifices we wish we hadn't... All of this can lead to suppressed feelings, and ultimately anxiety and depression. This used to be me, until I started consuming information by Dr. Aziz Gazipura. At its core, being nice is about being liked by others by making everything smooth. No waves, no friction. It’s based on this (woefully inaccurate) theory: If I please others, give them everything they want, keep a low profile, and don’t ruffle feathers or create any discomfort, then others will like me, love me, and shower me with approval and anything else I want. ― Aziz Gazipura, Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty... And Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, And Unapologetically Being Yourself Dr. Aziz is someone who has all the charisma of someone like Tony Robbins (who he trained with), but has a PhD in clinical psychology. What does this mean? His work is both entertaining and scientifically sound. Dr. Aziz has many profound insights about life, psychology, and transformation, but he specialises in social confidence. In this episode, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Aziz. Here’s what we discuss in the episode of the HighExistence Podcast: Why he focuses so much on "niceness" in his work. The role of trauma healing vs. self-optimisation. The importance of Shadow work, and how to do it. Finding balance between being assertive and compassionate. Dr. Aziz's transformation out of shyness. How to express yourself unapologetically. And much, much more... LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. AZIZ Read his book Not Nice (highly recommended) Podcast: Shrink for the Shy Guy Website Youtube channel

We all care what other people think, even if we pretend like we don’t. A healthy relationship with other people’s opinions is actually needed. It teaches us what works in communities and what doesn’t. It keeps people accountable to each other. However, so many of us, myself included, let the obsession with what other people think run amok and control our whole lives. We’ve been raised to be nice and not make any waves. Especially in the corporate setting, we place value on being a team player and suppressing your own needs for the greater good. Over time, that completely hinders our lives. We play small, keep quiet and make sure that other people’s needs are met over ours. It can cause an unbearable amount of stress and sadness. Ultimately, it leads to us not living lives on our own terms. This is glaringly evident when it comes to staying in a career you hate. So much of what keeps us stuck is our fear of what other people will think or say, how our family/friends will react, how upset our spouse will be, etc. If you’re going to find the courage to go after a life you love, you first have to learn how to stop people pleasing and be your authentic self. On this week’s episode, I’m so excited to have on Dr. Aziz Gazipura to talk about his book Not Nice and how we can go about limiting these toxic tendencies we’ve picked up. Dr. Aziz is the world’s leading confidence expert. He helps people break free from hesitation, fear, and self-doubt so they can rapidly grow their businesses, become more powerful leaders, and enjoy outstanding relationships. He completed his doctoral training at Stanford and Palo Alto Universities and is the founder of the Center For Social Confidence. He has a large online following with his podcast and YouTube videos and is the author of two additional best selling books: The Solution To Social Anxiety and The Art Of Extraordinary Confidence. Here is what we chat about in this episode: Why niceness isn’t rooted in goodness but rather in fear How to deal with the long view of changing your view to being more authentically yourself How to handle other people’s emotions in reaction to you speaking up for yourself Why it is necessary to be authentically yourself even if it hurts the people closest to you.
