In this Thursday “10 Things” episode of the Earn & Invest Podcast, Doc G shares his personal list of the ten biggest reasons he believes he successfully built wealth. Inspired by a recent conversation with financial historian Joseph Moore, Jordan begins by acknowledging the privileges that helped shape his path, including being born in the United States and growing up with professional parents. But he emphasizes that a series of specific habits and decisions—some simple and some unconventional—ultimately accelerated his financial journey. First, he credits relentless consistency. Inspired by Nick Maggiulli's philosophy of “just keep buying,” Jordan invested throughout his entire career regardless of market conditions. Even when he made early mistakes—buying individual stocks or expensive mutual funds—the habit of consistently purchasing assets eventually led him to the simplicity and power of broad index fund investing. Second, he explains why he never relied on a traditional budget. Instead, he and his wife automated their finances by living off one income while sending the entirety of the second income directly into savings and investments. This approach allowed them to build wealth automatically while avoiding the stress of tracking every spending category. Jordan also discusses why he stopped worrying about financial minutiae. Rather than chasing small optimizations like credit card points or the highest-yield savings accounts, he focused on the big financial moves—saving large portions of income, investing consistently, and building a profitable business. Throughout the episode, he highlights several other mindset shifts that shaped his success: ignoring people who said something “couldn't be done,” redesigning his medical practice into a low-overhead concierge model, and thinking in decades rather than weeks or months when pursuing long-term projects. He also shares the importance of embracing failure through experimentation, adopting an abundance mindset, losing interest in accumulating material possessions, and forgiving himself for inevitable financial mistakes along the way. In the last episode with Dr Jordan Grumet he differentiated small-p purpose from big-P purpose. And put most of the emphasis on small-p purpose, which is the daily activities that truly light you up. This is where I want to focus right now. What lights you up? What gives you energy? What inspires you? But don't jump to your appetites. I imagine like you, I have a lot of things that are a pleasure for me. A dopamine hit. I appreciate those things greatly. But that's not what we are talking about here. Think about it this way; you have apps on your phone that give you a dopamine hit. Social media or games. They are fine. But as you are playing them, you deplete the battery on your phone. What “lights up your phone” is plugging it in. So we're looking for the things that you participate in that charge you up. What Jordan is leading us to is the massive value of these activities. Let's help understand these better. Purpose is one of the most overused topics in the self-improvement world. Everyone is talking about it. But as we look at the culture, we see more apathy and depression then ever. It's similar to all the talk on being healthy and happy and we are just getting sicker and sadder. Why? With purpose, why are we constantly talking about it but not finding and experiencing it? I have with me, Jordan Grumet, and you are about to hear a very different look at what purpose is and how we can start experiencing much more of our purpose. Jordan is a medical doctor turned hospice doc. He is host of the Earn & Invest Podcast. He's author of Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life, the book that landed him here on my show the first time. Now he is back with a new book titled, The Purpose Code: How To Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, And Leave A Lasting Legacy. And we breakdown and dissect purpose. What it is, why we are missing it as a culture, and I'll give you what to me is the big takeaway, right here in the intro: you will find much more of your purpose in the day to day activities that light you up, than pursuing the big, grand purpose of saving the world. It's a very different approach to purpose that I found to be much more relevant, realistic, and attainable. Does a hard life automatically mean you're destined to struggle with finances? On today's show, we're all about mindset and how adopting the right mindset can set you on the path to financial success—and how having the wrong money mindset can hinder your financial progress. We're honored to invite Tiffany Grant down to the basement to share her real-life experiences and struggles, and how having the right mindset helped her overcome the early disadvantages. Doc G from The Earn & Invest Podcast joins us to share his formative-years experiences with a hard life, and how his mother's scarcity mindset affected him. And our resident gold bug, Len Penzo joins us to explain why he insists on preparing for economic doomsday by hoarding gold and cash.We discuss the role habits play in mindset formation, as well as the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and influences. In the second half of the discussion, we dive into how you can make the necessary changes in yourself to improve your life situation. Spoiler alert: gratitude plays a big role in your quality-of-life.And finally, Doug brings the heat with some trivia about a well-known budget-friendly food. With two of our regular contributors MIA, will Len use that to his advantage and inch ahead of Paula Pant? Will our guest of honor flex her budget-friendly food knowledge and give her soul-sister Paula the lead for the first time, I think, ever? Will Doc G throw OG a lifeline and the impetus to start a 4th quarter rally to emerge from the cellar? Three enter, only one will emerge victorious (unless there's another tie). Tune in and find out what everyone many a few nerds will be talking about until next Friday.FULL SHOW NOTES: https://www.stackingbenjamins.com/fri-roundtable-mindset-tiffany-grant-1400Deeper dives with curated links, topics, and discussions are in our newsletter, The 201, available at https://www.StackingBenjamins.com/201Enjoy! I have a very unique episode for you today that will hopefully help you take action in your life. I am joined by Jordan Grumet, hospice care doctor and host of the Earn and Invest Podcast. Throughout his years as a hospice care physician, Jordan has had many conversations with individuals whose lives are coming to an end. Through these conversations, he has been able to pinpoint what people value in life and what people tend to regret at the end of their lives. I really relate to Jordan's message through my dad's story and his story is part of the reason that I decided to leave a corporate career and spend part of the year in Costa Rica. Don't live a life that you'll regret. Take steps now to pursue your passion and make a financial plan that allows this. Tune in today to hear valuable insights from Jordan on life, personal finance, and pursuing your passions. What you'll hear in this episode: [2:55] Introduction to Jordan [4:34] What led Jordan to realize that his dream career was not actually what he was passionate about? [8:24] How Jordan began to find meaningful experiences working with hospice care patients. [10:20] What are some of the key lessons that Jordan learned about life from his hospice care patients? [21:10] What are some of the different structures and archetypes for building wealth? [36:50] What is Jordan's advice on maximizing your time to get the most out of every moment? Sammie and Michelle launched this podcast dissecting that same quote and over 100 episodes later, Doc G brought them onto the Earn & Invest Podcast to ask what a life in alignment really means. We discuss how we went from being spendy in SF to frugral in a small town, the joys of a sabbatical, how to find your passion, the benefits of boredom and even dive into Michelle's dating "bounty". What can the dying teach us about money? Turns out, it's a lot. It's an interesting question that, if you're like me, you don't think about a lot on a daily basis. Sometimes it's even hard to imagine that one day I just won't exist anymore. Not to get too morbid with you, but as they say, the only two truths in life are death and taxes. So, I think we can learn a lot about the role money should play in our life from someone who is dying. Our guest, Dr. Jordan Grumet, you may know him as Doc G host of The Earn and Invest Podcast and author of Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life, had a front-row seat into many of these important money and life lessons and is sharing them with you in this episode.
