In 2019, I moved into “Mummy Daddy”'s House to save BIG for my retirement. I recently got into FIRE and was looking for a way to cut down on housing costs while living in the Bay Area. Though I was on the fast track to early retirement, my parents were barely on track for normal retirement. The culprit? A low savings rate. My parents spent too much money on things they did not care about. The would regularly spend $300 on groceries at Costco despite both of them eating very little. When I realized that criticism was not working, I decided to help them calculate their net worth and spending. We found that outside of her 401k contribution, my parents were saving very little. If dependency is not a bad word, nobody told Michelle and me. Since we were children our mom has implanted us with the mantras: “You must be independent”, “Never depend on a man”, etc. Immigration to the United States of America probably self-selects for the most independent-minded people and we were brought up in an entire family of freedom lovers. Independence has served us well. We were eager to start working and provide for ourselves. We were eager to learn about financial independence. Did someone say we could be free from even outside sources of income? Count us in. So what's the only problem with independence? The fact that none of us are truly independent. We rely on others for social support, mentoring, financial security, diverse perspectives, new ideas, inspiration, and more. In the book Attached, the authors discuss how depending on another person like a romantic person can provide security that can allow for more creativity and adventure. Ironically, the sense of safety that comes from relationships provides us with more freedom in our lives. This week Michelle and I discuss how dependence can be beneficial and how actions like being vulnerable and expressing your needs can help create a mutualistic relationship. I remember reading Shonda Rhimes's Year of Yes shortly after moving to San Francisco. In the book, Rhimes discusses how she spent a year saying yes to every invitation, request, and opportunity to play with her children that came her way. She found the experience brought her so much joy as well as new friendships and opportunities. What did I feel when I read this book? Guilt. I felt guilty because I did not want to say yes. I was tired. At that time, I had a total three-hour commute and loads of paperwork after the workday. The last thing I wanted to do was say yes to anything extraneous. Michelle and I have realized that life comes with seasons of expansion as well as seasons of contraction, seasons of yes, and seasons of no. In our seasons of yes we bring in new friendships, new hobbies, new opportunities, and new experiences. We remember these seasons fondly as times when we were exploring. Just as important is the season of no. Derek Sivers puts it eloquently in his piece “No yes. Either Hell Yeah! or no”. Seasons of no are about clearing the calendar, the mind, and the home. No to everything extra! Hell yes or no is minimalism applied to our lives. Our “no's” create moments of stillness, quiet, and boredom where new insights and ideas grow and flourish. We see this with the collective calendar clearing brought on by COVID-19. Many people report they found clarity in their purpose and direction when they were forced to do less. What season are you in right now? Yes or no? What insights are you finding from this season of your life? Comment below. Show Notes:No yes. What if you could change from the negative to the positive without changing anything about your circumstances? No, this is not a multi-level marketing scheme! The key is changing our perspective. I remember when I was in my early twenties I would rarely have more than a few hundred dollars and I never felt any scarcity about this. When I think back on this I'm shocked. A flat tire, a broken arm, an unexpected night at a hotel could have demolished all my wealth, and yet I was walking around with no sense of insecurity. Reflecting on my twenty-year-old self, I realized that our sense of financial security exists solely in our minds. What if I could re-channel the abundance mindset that I naturally carried in my twenties? This week Michelle and I discussed strategies to change our perspective so we can radiate abundance and draw in all forms of wealth. My sabbatical has been a journey inward. I deeply appreciate how we arrive at this “earth school”, Byron Katie's words, to break the disruptive thought patterns that otherwise play out repeatedly. For many years, I've enjoyed meditation in calming the mind and recognize thought patterns, but sometimes I need a little extra help when I am deep in my emotions. This is where I have found The Work of Byron Katie extremely helpful. Byron Katie uses four simple questions and their turnarounds to help us discover how we may be thinking in a way that brings us stress. Before answering the questions write down your belief and sit in the moment where you most strongly experienced the negative emotion. Is it true? Can you absolutely know that it's true? How do you react when you believe that thought?Who would you be without the thought?Turnarounds: Then turn the belief around in as many ways as you can. We received this piece entitled “Millennials want to retire by 60. Good luck with that.” from Michael, a listener of this podcast who wanted to know our thoughts. This piece, published in USA Today, reflects the click-bait content that is out there to scare people while not providing guidance on how to make changes. In this episode, Michelle and I go through this piece and point out the flaws in the article. We also talk about how to think about whether we can retire or not using well-studied research like the Trinity Study and data about our individual spending and saving patterns. We target this piece, not because it is unique, but because so much information is out there that is meant to inflame without benefitting the reader. A sabbatical can change our perspective on time and money, changing how we perceive work. Since being on my sabbatical, I now prioritize my time over income. Of course, there may be jobs that provide me with both free time and a solid income, time freedom is the priority. When considering your priorities and options after a sabbatical, here are some key factors to think about:Time: How much time do you want to dedicate to work versus other activities or interests?Income: What level of income do you need or want to sustain your desired lifestyle?Location Flexibility: Are you open to working remotely, or do you prefer a job that requires you to be in a specific location?Travel: Is travel a priority for you, and do you need a job that allows for flexibility in this regard?Unconventional Schedule: Are you looking for a job with non-traditional hours or a flexible schedule?Interests: What types of work align with your passions and interests?Show Notes:No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.Community TimeCongratulations Carla on getting her Student Loans Forgiven!!April 30th is the final deadline to consolidate student loans. Air passengers in the United States have very few rights when it comes to flight delays or cancellations. If you are flying in Europe you have many more rights and could be paid for your inconvenience. There is a service that can help acquire that compensation and help you if you are stranded. This episode I speak with Eric Napoli, Vice President of Legal Strategy and Leader of the Tech & Innovation team at AirHelp.com to talk about your rights and how they can help. When I started calculating my net worth in 2019, I felt like a complete fraud. I had -$164,000 in student loan debt and I knew I would continue to have this debt until my student loan forgiveness period is completed in April 2025. Previously, I also assumed that my net worth would be negative until the loans were forgiven. This is where I was completely wrong. As I started tracking I found that with my deliberate saving and investing my net worth was rapidly increasing DESPITE still having -164k in student loan debt. Inspired by the change, I started saving and investing even more and in Jun 2020 my net worth was positive for the first time. The plan I had created for myself worked and it worked really well! I never admitted this out loud, but on that day I set an even more aggressive goal- to become a millionaire by the time my loans are forgiven. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure I will reach this goal, but I have already received drastic life-changing benefits from the wealth I have. I already get to spend my time the way I want to and, because of that, I am happier and healthier than I've ever been.Show Notes: Net Worth: What It Is and How to CalculateIt by Investopedia Not an advertisement: Our favorite savings account- Capital One Performance 360 SavingsCommunity TimeAirHelp: Partner For This EpisodeCheck out our partner for this episode, AirHelp. One silver lining of COVID is that it gave me a new appreciation for in-person gatherings. In November 2021, Michelle and I came up with a concept called “Death Clock”. We were driving back from my job interview in the middle of the desert when we started pondering scenarios involving our own mortality. If we had a timer next to our head that said we only had ten more years to live, would we change anything? If the timer said five years or one year, what would change? This thought experiment shed light on the perceived and real limitations that were preventing me from making changes. At that time, the death clock exercise made me realize that under no circumstance would I stay at my current job in San Jose because it was both taking up all my time and paying less than my future job in the desert. I ended up taking the desert job. We moved to the middle of nowhere. A radio tower fell on our house. Michelle started working two jobs related to her interests and now is writing regularly. I ultimately quit my job to take a sabbatical and now we are living in South Carolina. Life moves fast when death clock is on the brain. Today, we discuss how the concept of death clock has impacted our lives and how death clock brought clarity to the life changes that needed to be made to live more closely in alignment. Budgeting, or planning how your dollars are going to be spent in the future, is more tricky than simply tracking each expense. I've always marveled at zero-based budgeting software like YNAB, You Need a Budget. With YNAB, you take every dollar from your income and assign it to a job. Some money gets set aside for rent, groceries, savings, etc. However, as someone with a high savings rate, zero-based budgeting strategies seemed a bit overkill for my needs. Not working complicated all of this. Budgeting and tracking my expenses is so much more important when you don't have a job. At the same time, you can't “budget” a non-existent paycheck. Was I supposed to assign each dollar of my net worth a job? That seemed insane and very difficult to predict so early on in my life. Michelle and I took time this week to discuss simpler ways to budget. Our friend and fellow podcast listener, Arjun, told us that he has a general idea of what he spends on most things each month, so he knows how much he typically spends. We took this concept and combined it with tracking your spending. First, we calculated our monthly fixed expenses; rent, utilities, health insurance etc. For me, this number is around 1600-1700. Next, we use data from tracking our spending to track our other spending categories and costs. As an example, my typical spending categories are groceries, gas, hanging out with friends, home supplies etc, which can range from about $800-3000. Spending at this rate would result in an annual spending of about $43,000. I can use my typical monthly spending to estimate my next month's costs and consider any extra expenses I might have- travel, Christmas, etc. When I see how much I spent at the end of the month, I can tell if I am above or below my average spending which helps me decide if I am still on track. Though this method may not be as accurate or stringent as zero-based budgeting, Michelle and I found that it helped paint a realistic picture of our spending which relieved money anxieties and our scarcity mindset. Listen to today's podcast for the details of our method. How do you all track your expenses and budget? Are you on a break from work or self-employed, how do you manage your spending? Let us know in the comments below. What are you telling the universe? If the universe sent a little scribe down to record everything you are thinking and doing, what would this log look like? Imagine if a genie could turn that story into reality – would this story bring you satisfaction? If you continue doing the same actions that you are doing today, what will be the end result? These thoughts and actions become our reality, so we must be deliberate about them. James Clear talks about “Identity-Based Habits”.
