"Strategic planning is creating certainty in an uncertain world." – Tim Fulton Strategic planning is essential for success in any business, yet many companies either overlook or struggle with the process. In this episode, Trace Blackmore welcomes back Tim Fulton, President of Small Business Matters, to explore the fundamentals of strategic planning and how businesses can chart their course for success.   Tim shares insights on why strategic planning matters, how to involve the right people, and how to create a plan that actually works. Whether you're a business owner, manager, or part of a team, this episode provides valuable takeaways to help you navigate uncertainty, set clear objectives, and execute effectively. Why Strategic Planning is Critical Strategic planning helps businesses stay focused in an unpredictable world. By analyzing past performance, assessing the present, and setting future goals, companies can adapt to changing markets, industry trends, and emerging technologies like AI. Who Should Be Involved in Strategic Planning? Successful planning requires input from leaders and key employees at different levels. Involving the right people fosters collaboration, avoids blind spots, and ensures that the plan is practical and actionable, rather than created in isolation. The SWOT Analysis: A Tool for Understanding Your Business A SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) helps businesses understand their position. Identifying strengths and weaknesses within the company, along with external opportunities and threats, provides a clearer strategy for growth and risk management. Executing the Plan & Measuring Success A strategic plan is only effective if it's executed properly. Setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) ensures clarity, while quarterly reviews and color-coded tracking (Green, Yellow, Red) help teams monitor progress. Methods like the 12-Week Year and OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) keep businesses on track and accountable. Why Having a Third-Party Facilitator Can Make a Difference An outside facilitator brings an objective perspective, helping businesses stay focused and engaged during planning. Leaders who try to both facilitate and participate often struggle to balance these roles. Involving an expert improves discussions and strengthens team buy-in. Common Mistakes in Strategic Planning & How to Avoid Them Many businesses fail in strategic planning due to poor communication, lack of follow-through, and ignoring potential risks. A strong plan must be actively maintained throughout the year to ensure long-term success. Tim Fulton joined Trace Blackmore to deliver essential insights into strategic planning, emphasizing clarity, involvement, accountability, and the power of facilitation. This episode challenges listeners to create meaningful strategies, fostering organizational resilience and success in any environment. Setting SMART goals--Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound is important. I once designed a website for an emerging brand. Initially, they weren't setting SMART goals, like 'get lots of viewers'. We switched that vague goal into something SMART like 'achieve 10% more site viewers over the next month.' Lo and behold! Not only did this improve their traffic, but it also helped them target their marketing efforts effectively. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/buildyourdifference/support

Are you holding yourself back from your goals due to self-doubt? Learn how to overcome self-doubt by taking things one step at a time. In this podcast episode, Adam Hill discusses how to rise above limiting beliefs of self-doubt through incremental growth and goal setting. Listen in as Adam shares his story of how breaking through barriers can start with simple baby steps. He also explains how focusing on small wins and SMART goals can help you make steady progress towards your dreams. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The paradox of self-doubt for high achievers  Reframing doubt as a signal rather than a barrier The story of Jesus walking on water and Peter's doubt Setting SMART goals for incremental improvement Celebrating small wins to build confidence Episode Highlights: [03:29] The Paradox of Self-Doubt for High Achievers Self-doubt is a natural response for those pursuing big goals. When we take on large challenges, self-doubt kicks in as a defense mechanism to make us question ourselves. The very nature of wanting to accomplish significant feats that are "far out there" will inherently cause doubt, since we have no track record of past success at that level. However, this doubt should not prevent action. While it's normal and expected to have uncertainty about lofty goals due to our human limitations, addressing doubt through strategies like incremental progress can help override it as a limiting factor and allow one to continue pursuing their dreams. [15:33] Conquering Doubt Through Baby Steps Adam shares how breaking down his big goal of an Ironman triathlon into small, incremental steps helped him overcome self-doubt and achieve what once seemed impossible. When he first set his sights on an Ironman, the 2.4 mile open water swim was his biggest fear due to being an inexperienced swimmer. Rather than let doubt paralyze him, Adam got strategic by breaking down the massive swim into mini-milestones like learning to float and then swim 25 yards continuously. By chipping away at his fears step-by-step, Adam was able to steadily build confidence through a sense of progress and small wins. Facing each manageable goal in turn helped Adam overcome doubt with determination and perseverance, ultimately gaining proof that he was capable of more than he imagined. [24:25] Setting SMART Goals for Incremental Improvement SMART stands for goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Adam recommends breaking big goals down into smaller, SMART goals that can be accomplished within a 90-day period. For example, rather than a vague goal of "improve my swimming," one might set a goal of "Swim 100 yards without stopping in 30 days." Adam notes that setting clearly defined, short-term goals helps create a roadmap towards long-term success. It allows you to celebrate small wins that build confidence as you progress step-by-step towards your larger vision. Having time-bound goals also keeps you accountable and motivated to keep chipping away at limitations. In today's episode, Mathew and Chris discuss why New Year's promises are better than resolutions, why most people abandon them after about 4 to 6 weeks, and tips to stay consistent with your goals. Whether it's Chris's promise to stretch or Mathews' promise to hit the gym, the guys are right there with you, fighting through the struggles and celebrating the achievements. Thankfully, there are some things we can all do to set ourselves up for success!  First, expect it to get hard. It's not if, but rather when the temptations to give up or get complacent will strike. Look at the conditions that have led to failure for you in the past and identify what you can do this time to overcome those challenges. Next, be honest with yourself about why you are making the promise. Is it out of tradition, outside pressure, or a real desire to change? Every day is a chance to do something new, and there is no reason to wait until January 1st. Any time you are ready to commit is the perfect time to start. Setting SMART goals and maintaining a good mindset are also essential to keeping our promises to ourselves. Chris walks us through the science of goal-setting, and Mathew talks about avoiding comparing our journeys to those of other people. No matter what, keeping the promise we make to ourselves is what is most important. If you need to, alter your goals to make them achievable, sustainable, and realistic. Don't take on too much or let perfection get in the way of progress. Just 10 minutes a day can change your whole life! Parts of this episode contain discussion about addiction and/or substance abuse. If you or someone you know is dealing with addiction or substance abuse, there is help: Substance Abuse National Helpline 1-800-662-HELP (4357)How's your phone? Good? You might just have it in your hand right now, right? Well, if you're in the camp that feels your phone behavior is getting in the way of, you know, living your life, the community comes to the rescue today.Along the way, Pete has a bit of a rant on using the word "Addiction" when describing our use of technology. Yes, he feels strongly about it. No, he's not an Addiction expert. But he does have some people who are experts who are as frustrated as he is about the use of the word. Our collective hope today, though, is that you hear a different perspective that might give you a new lens through which to view your own use of technology without reducing your agency when it comes to getting it under control.Special thanks to Matt Raekelboom for giving us permission to use the audio from one of his TikTok videos in this week's show.
