Both Llance and Lori share that Milly was a generous and wonderful person. "There was a real strength about her" continues Lori," and I didn't see her cry very often."Again, Milly had wonderful qualities about her even after major setbacks . Lori's mother and father had four children and raised them in the Seattle, WA area. Lori's youngest brother, is developmentally disabled which, Lori says, "it gave our family a different dynamic. All my mother wanted was the best for her kids. I think of how hard my mom worked to just give us a normal life, in spite of the challenges." So in honor of Milly, they named their soups after her.The broths came to fruition because Lori was a long time teacher and for years would bring a bouillon to work with her and add hot water for a nutritional snack. That's when Llance said, I'm going to try and make you something more nutritious and with less salt. And the creation of Millie's Sipping Broth had it's beginning.I don't know if you're familiar with the podcast "How I Built This" with host Guy Raz. Well I listened to an episode and Llance was a guest on the show. Guy also had an entrepreneur cohost, Jim Koch, Founder of Samuel Adams Beer. The two hosts talk through a business venture idea with each caller and give advice. Well Llance got some great feedback from both gentleman and things really seems to be taking off for Milly's Sipping Broth.Llance created a discount code for SHLTMM podcast listeners. The irony of this training is the fact that I am writing the script while flying on a private plane from a secluded island in the Bahamas after spending 3 days spearfishing, eating, and hanging out with friends and clients. That was a moment of privilege. Spending your days with continual electricity is a privilege. If you are listening to this talk, you have privilege. Privilege is “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group”. A more direct definition is to be “exempt from an obligation from which others are subject.” How do you know if you are in a class of privilege? Others shoulder a burden you don't have to shoulder. It wastes our time to try and determine if we are privileged, and instead to ask “because we have privilege, what does that mean?” In the barren desert of the middle east, a man hears a message. “I will bless (privilege) you so that you can be a blessing (offer privilege to others).” This training is about the so that. When you have privilege that goal is not to consume the privilege you have, but instead to inventory the privilege, proximity yourself among those who do and don't have your privilege, and then offer privilege to others in a way that allows them to follow the same reinvestment strategies. The problem with privilege is that we tend to see it as terminal; either it stops with us (because we consume but don't re-invest, OR it stops with the direct person we share it with because they consume but don't re-invest). Brian Fikkert co-authored an aptly named and important book “When Helping Hurts” that opens our eyes to understand that when we have privilege, we want to share that privilege, and too often the privilege we share ends up doing more harm than if we would have just kept the privilege ourselves. It would help to redirect the privilege discussion back into the context of Executive Leadership and tie privilege back to our definition: proximity to motivate a team to pursue the named future you see. Let's look at consuming and deploying privilege through three lenses of our definition. First, privilege can bring proximity. There is a template for leveraging the privilege of money to influence friendships. Of course, we are not condoning nor suggesting bribes or payoffs. Instead, you can choose to deploy your money in places that provide you proximity for connection. We were at a resort with our family, clearly a place of privilege…it was a once in a lifetime type of trip. This resort puts us in immediate proximity to people who had the same or more privilege than we had. We get to talking with some of the other vacationers and over time get the direct email of a very well-known and influential music industry executive who has put some of the greatest acts in the world on the stage. We sat and watched a World Cup match with he and his young son and developed a relationship. The inanimate tool of our money provided us with “a special right…granted or available only to a particular person or group.” It is good to consistently ask, “how can the privilege I have provide proximity to bring that privilege to others, or to provide new relationships that breed new privilege.” Secondly, privilege can breed motivation. When you have access to privilege you often have something someone else would like to have but is unable to attain. Think about the privilege of a well-known athlete who is willing to step down from his throne of notoriety and sincerely show up to read a book to a Kindergarten class, or visit patients at a hospital and offer encouragement. The athlete has the privilege of notoriety, influence, and voice…they offer that to those who do not and thus bring a unique motivation that might help that Kindergartner grow up to have a unique impact, or provide the motivation for the mental fight that a patient will need to conquer their disease. Privilege reinvested breeds new and novel privileges that can be perpetuated. Privilege consumed breeds bitterness, expectation, and myopic arrogance that pushes the privileged to think they are the ones responsible for their own privilege ignoring all of the investment of privilege that has been planted into their own lives. This training exists in part because we don't want you to slowly become that. You are too generous, and you are too intentional for your life to slowly devolve into arrogance and self-importance. Thirdly, privilege helps to jump the various hurdles on the way to the named future that you see. I enjoy Guy Raz' How I Built This Podcast…it is a fascinating look at the emotional inside of some of the world's most interesting businesses. Towards the end of each podcast, he asked a staple question, “Does your success have more to do with luck, or with skill?” I love the podcast, and I hate that question. Remember the old adage, “the harder I work, the luckier I get.” When we have moments of momentum and success that we cannot explain we tend to call it luck. Pausing to reflect we can actually align our “lucky moments” to moments of privilege; privilege that you had that connection, or were in that specific location. There are things we coordinate or manipulate for our benefit, and there are things that “just happen”. Pay close attention, ask yourself, “would this have happened if I did not have access to a certain privilege that others don't.” One day I might meet Carrie Underwood… it would feel like “luck”, but a short audit of my relationships and privileges reveals that I had the privilege of being a paying member of a mastermind group, that mastermind group offered me the privilege of meeting and getting to know a very talented guitarist and Dobro player, and that very talented guitarist had the privilege of being the Dobro player for Carrie Underwood. What looks like “luck” to most is actually privilege dressed in a lack of awareness and context. History's wealthiest and wisest person whose privilege was well documented once declared, “all is vanity and chasing after wind.” When we make privilege the end game, we become the walking dead. When we look at privilege as an investment to enjoy and reinvest… we make time for what matters most. Finally, privilege can and will be a load to bear. Share that load with people who have wisdom. The word “team” has its roots in the concept of a team of pack horses…a unified group pulling heavy loads in a specific direction. Privilege requires building a team to help advise, direct, and hold account your privilege so that it remains a value to all, and not just you. A business owner had accrued a significant sum of money in a profit account that he had setup to build up as his business grew. As we were reviewing progress I told him, “Congratulations on how you have grown that account.” He looked at me with a blank stare and responded, “just one more problem I've got to handle.” When you have resources, it is your responsibility to manage those resources. Of course, most people are bent to desire more instead of less, and the more you have, the more you are required to distribute. The ultimate question you must answer is “what will you do with what you have” knowing that your response to that question will reveal the desire and state of your ultimate motivation. Be mindful, slow, and wise with the privilege that you have.

The future of thrifting is here, and I couldn't be more excited! Payton, Brigit, and the entire Fomeno team are innovative business women and I'm stoked to see where this venture takes them. But, they're also visionaries for much more than their business - I'm inspired by these ladies to pursue my passions, even if it does challenge some societal norms! Last week Payton and Brigit came on the show to tell me more about their award-winning business and how they are making secondhand fashion more accessible for all. Their app is getting ready to launch this fall - consider me first on the list to download it! This week, they're telling me more of the background story (like how they got the name you're probably wondering about) and also how they stay motivated to keep hustling even while balancing busy school and athletic schedules. You came here for the thrifting info, but you're going to leave feeling motivated to pursue your wildest dreams. This is women inspiring women (and men!) and I am allll about it. Make sure you follow along with the Fomeno journey so that you can thrift Fomeno soon AND so you can keep being encouraged! What’s it all about? Going Double Unicorn in 5 years, and still knowing you are still only at the beginning of the journey! I speak to tech founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Greg Jackson about how he used tech as the platform to disrupt one of the industries most resistant to, and in need of disruption- energy supply. With a focus on technology solving problems, and driving down costs, AND a focus on creating cultures which support and empower people to be their best and most creative. I hope you enjoy this slightly longer than usual episode. About Greg Jackson: Greg is an experienced digital entrepreneur, passionate about making the green energy revolution affordable through technology. He’s founded a number of successful businesses, including e-commerce company C360, built HomeServe’s innovation business and is an angel investor in a wide range of tech start-ups. He also served as Director of several innovative businesses, including Zopa, the world’s first peer to peer lender, which has now lent almost £2bn fairly and responsibly whilst generating excellent interest rates for lenders. Greg founded Octopus Energy in 2015. It uses technology to be highly efficient – empowering customers with a full digital experience, and then using the same systems to provide the highest standards of support to its customers by phone, email and chat. This technology allows Octopus to challenge normal energy models, bringing transparent, low pricing to new and loyal customers. Octopus is a recognised innovator, delivering time-of-use tariffs at scale, driving EV adoption and helping make the smart grid a reality. About Octopus Energy In the UK, Octopus now stands at 2 million customers, growing by 2500-3000 per day, and is the only energy supplier recommended by consumer champions Which?, for four years in a row. Following significant investment from Tokyo Gas and Origin Energy in December 2020, Octopus became a tech ‘double unicorn’ valued at well over £2 billion. With operations in the US, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, Octopus expects to expand its platform into many more markets over the next few years. There’s a three-step framework to user onboarding. And you can apply to your marketing efforts as well — to ensure that your brand is top of mind to your audience. Adapted from psychologist BJ Fogg’s habit-forming framework, Ramli John, Managing Director and ProductLed and author of the new book, “Eureka,” explains how it applies to user onboarding journeys: Make it easy. (Create helpful content that can grow your organic traffic.) Increase motivation. (Explain the outcomes you give your customers.) Add prompts. (Remind customers of your value.) Listen to the episode to learn how to apply it to your content and user onboarding strategy. You’ll also learn: User onboarding done right The importance of saying “no” How Ramli secured his first podcast sponsorship for Growth Marketing Today. Larissa Barabasch from Vienna is a Climate-KIC Master Label student label at the University of Copenhagen. As an economics and business student, her curiosity led her to question the model of growth and use it to address soil diversity and waste management. After changing her studies from economics to climate change, together with other participants from the Madrid-Valencia Journey she is currently working on a modular school program for 10-14 year old school kids. The modular system of different courses, panel discussions, events and other diverse activities, allows for direct climate change incorporation into the school curriculum without being a huge burden for the teachers. Find out how this hybrid program will allow school kids to connect with topics of climate change and the problems from and around it. Calling in from San Diego, Shawn Walchef is a true maverick when it comes to scaling a restaurant digitally. Since the pandemic, his restaurant Cali Comfort BBQ has been three times more profitable than ever. Within 12 years, it’s gone from $300,000 losing money each year to making $3.3 million in 12 years. His secret? The smartphone. It’s common for people in hospitality to work 80 - 100 hours a week, but it just didn’t sit right. It’s time for restaurants to be reconfigured. Digital hospitality has a huge opportunity for all of us to harness. As we learn from Shawn, it takes consistency and time to learn how to craft your digital story to who you serve. Madison Anaya is the host of the Fearless Chase podcast and a content strategist who discovered early on the importance of chasing after your dreams. She’s pivoted in her own life and is a ball of fire! Madison has incredible strategies and tools when it comes to recognizing what you should be saying in your content in order to speak directly to your ideal client. Madison has built The Fearless Chase community which is filled with female entrepreneurs who are some of the most supportive and encouraging women out there. We are talking about content strategy as well as imposter syndrome and Madison getting candid with us on her own experiences with imposter syndrome. Let’s start focusing on serving instead of impressing! What we’re talking about Fearlessly Chasing Your Dreams Getting Past Imposter Syndrome Content Strategy & The Importance of Being Yourself Fearlessly Chasing Your Dreams Madison’s life was on the path to suburbia with her middle-school sweetheart and a corporate career in communications. That all quickly changed when in the span of less than two years she totaled her car, her father-in-law passed away from cancer, her house was flooded by hurricane Harvey, her mother-in-law got cancer and her parents got a divorce. Suddenly, she felt like she was drowning and needed to figure out who she was as a person. In her corporate job, she discovered that she enjoyed social media, so she took a semester off of school and created The Fearless Chase podcast. Listening to how others chased their dreams, she interviewed Micala Quinn and decided to start offering virtual assistant services. Ultimately, Madison was able to take her side hustle and go full-time and realize her sweet spot was in content strategy. She pivoted and decided to hone in on that particular skill, along with launching events. Getting Past Imposter Syndrome Imposter syndrome can creep in with thoughts of “What if people figure out if I don’t know what I’m doing?”. Madison was insecure with how young she was and questioned whether anyone would listen to what a 24 year old had to say. As a teen, she was part of a Christian group of kids who were leaders in training. In that group she was always reminded that she was in training, no matter what position she was in and that has stuck with her throughout the years. Madison says that if you want to grow, you have to allow yourself to be a beginner and be in training. Let the world know that you are learning along the way and see how that humanizes you in the eyes of others, ultimately making you more trustworthy. Content Strategy & The Importance of Being Yourself Focusing on serving instead of impressing is what is going to take your content to the next level. The biggest hurdle is narrowing down who you are talking to and most people skip this step. You can’t serve them well if you don’t know who you’re serving. Combine who you’re talking to with what you offer and what your brand consists of. Take that combination to create 3-5 topics that you can speak on a regular basis. Madison suggests you look at what people are telling you and your competitors and reply in their own lingo. So often we want to use our industry lingo, but that doesn’t resonate with those who want and need our services. If it did, then they wouldn’t be hiring you! Explain it in their terms and they’ll want to work with you because they understand you. Lastly, be yourself. Talk and create content as if you were talking to your best friend. Chances are that your dream client is likely a version of yourself...past, present or future. Is your content serving your audience? My guest this week is Alex Mittal, co-founder of Funders Club. Following past guest Jeremiah Lowin, Alex is my second elementary school friend to appear on the podcast—a trend I hope continues. Funders club is a unique venture firm, because it is build around a network of investors and entrepreneurs who submit deals for consideration and invest together. But as you’ll hear, Alex and his co-founder Boris aren’t just building an open platform for early stage investing: they also then take a very traditional venture approach, making investing decisions themselves when it comes to building a centralized portfolio. Our conversation is about what Alex has learned investing in almost 300 early stage companies over the past 7 years. Please enjoy. For more episodes go to InvestorFieldGuide.com/podcast. In this episode of the Grow or Die Mid-Week Checkpoint, we examine a short clip from NPR’s How I Built This Podcast. Guy Raz interviews Howard Schultz, Executive Chairman of the Starbucks Corporation. While walking the streets of Milan, Italy, Howard began to recognize the culture and community surrounding coffee. Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review Break Out of Your Comfort Zone "Why is it so easy to do the same thing over and over again if you're not happy? Why stay in repeat mode if you're not getting no where near the result you want? If you're unhappy with your weight or your health, then there has to be a change." - Rob Dionne On this week's episode of the Open Sky Fitness Podcast, Devon and I are sharing how you can break out of your comfort zone and begin to live a healthier life. When you're brand new at building a healthier lifestyle, going to the gym or learning how to cook healthy meals can be stressful and intimidating. However, leaving your comfort zone can easily be accomplished. We'll explain what is a comfort zone, how optimal anxiety can help you grow, and the benefits of breaking through your comfort zone. What is a Comfort Zone? "A comfort zone consists of a series of routines, behaviors and patterns that minimize the stress in your life and puts you into a state of mental security. There's no risk because you're basically on autopilot." - Rob and Devon Dionne When we're in a comfort zone, everything is normal on a day-to-day basis. We're not challenging ourselves, but that's okay because what we do the same thing every day without any changes or obstacles. If we do try to leave the comfort zone to do a new workout, order a healthier meal, or even learn how to cook, it can feel really strange. How Optimal Anxiety Can Help You Grow "In order to actually maximize your performance, you have to be in a state of optimal anxiety." - Devon Dionne When you begin to break outside of your comfort zone, you want to be fired up yet still be able to perform your best. If you feel anxious at the idea of learning how to cook or join a gym class, just remember that 'anxiety' is only a word that is used to describe a feeling. In fact, a slight amount of it as optimal anxiety can actually be a good thing. When you challenge yourself, you can build upon an enhanced amount of productivity that allows you to do more than you possibly ever thought you could. Seek Assistance to Leave Your Comfort Zone If you are stuck or in need of some help, don't be afraid to ask or seek assistance with accomplishing your goal. There are people out there and different wellness communities that are eager and ready to you can help you break through your goal. One great example if you want to learn how to cook healthier meals at home is Blue Apron. They provide you with the ingredients and measurements that you need to prepare your meal so you don't have to wander around the grocery store trying to figure out what to buy. However, you'll still need to learn how to prep and create the meal yourself, but Blue Apron is a good stepping stone to help you learn how to cook. The Benefits of Breaking Through Your Comfort Zone "When you think of your health, fitness, and general lifestyle and if it seems overwhelming to you, it's because you're trying to think of it all at once. You're trying to think of how to fix everything at once when in reality all you have to do is be willing to step outside the comfort zone and take baby steps towards that first thing that's going to have the biggest impact in your life." - Rob Dionne You don't have to try to leave several comfort zones at once because that can create the large amount of anxiety that we want to avoid. To reach optimal anxiety and challenge yourself to help improve your life, just pick one thing to do on a daily basis until you get comfortable with it. Expand your horizons by focusing on the biggest thing that will change your life and remember to start small. Today’s guest on the show is musician and content creator Willard Hill. We met up at Ink48, a Kimpton hotel in the heart Hell's Kitchen and talked about growing up in New Orleans, how culture is a gumbo, his process of making music, the music industry, group think, corporate culture, overcoming creative roadblocks, art being a reflection of the times and much much more. That’s enough intro for one show, please enjoy. I’m going to close out today’s episode with Will performing his song Future Fresh at The Gumbo NYC. And I’ll see ya’ll, next Tuesday… Lord Willing.
