EP262: This week my guest is Dr. Lotte Valentin, “The Intuitive Physician”, who is a Naturopathic Physician (N.M.D.), author, medical intuitive, evidential medium, ancestral healer and an international keynote speaker. Dr. Lotte has authored Med School after Menopause, The Journey of my Soul, which is an inspirational story about transformation, healing and spirituality, which won 1st place in the category of Spiritual Leadership in August 2021 from Living Now Book Awards. Dr. Lotte is also the creator of Healing Your Ancestral Mother Wound, which she produced in collaboration with Hemi-Sync. To add to her long list of qualifications, she is also trained in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement for women. She treats menopause, peri-menopause, endometriosis, PCOS and other menstrual issues.  In this episode, Dr. Lotte and I talked about: Her two near death experiences which turned her from skeptic to believer. How the discovery of her gifts led her down a new path to medical school and writing three books. The difference between a dream and what she calls 'soul journeying.' As an N.M.D., Dr. Lotte understands the importance of healing not just the physical body but on an energetic, emotional and spiritual level.  Her near death experiences have been spiritually transformative visits to “the other side” and have left her with certain spiritual and psychic gifts. She believes these experiences were lived to lead her to become a physician, author and spiritual healer.   To learn more about Dr. Lotte and her work, you can go to: Medical Websites: www.DrLotte.com Spiritual Website: www.DivineSpiritualEssence.com Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DrLotteValentin Instagram https://www.instagram.com/dr.lottevalentin/?hl=en YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC42wTMb1j-VlDOZOcxVpnTA Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-lotte-valentin-41110020/   If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at:   Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com              Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright                Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma              Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma   Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@grandmawhoisnotaverage     Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

    The Lesson In Being Present

EP261: In today's episode I share how valuable it was to be present as I vacationed with friends at the beach last week and the 4 examples that are so simple, yet most of us rarely do and when we do, we don't really tune in and appreciate those experiences. Listen in and hear the other 3 things that truly made me feel so much more connected to the people around me and, more importantly, to myself.  I came back from this short 5 day trip more relaxed, more peaceful, and continuing to be more present than I've felt in awhile. This experience made me realize that these present moments are all around us all day, every day, so I find myself, in my day to day, much more aware of when I feel myself too focused on what's ahead and hasn't happened yet or fretting about what's already happened. And since I'm now so much more aware of how good it makes me feel to be focused on the present moments, I can more easily shift my mind there. EP259: This week's guest is Jen Kline Clark, a lawyer by trade with a curvy path through service, charter schools, nonprofits, advertising/marketing, and now as a coach for business owners helping them design their dream business that's profitable, her journey has been filled with passion, love and community. Her biggest career pivot was when she decided to sell her lucrative advertising business and be a full time coach when she realized her true passion was helping clients who came to her for ads in her advertising business, but stayed for her business guidance, that's exactly the moment when she decided to put her focus on their success. In this episode, Jen and I talked about: Why her dad called her the “black sheep” of the family and how that label impacted her. Her pattern of always choosing logic vs. following her heart and how it affected her path in life. Valuable lessons she's learned about why businesses aren't profitable and the one thing all business owners need to make the money they desire.   As the black sheep of her family, she says we're trained to believe the road less traveled is to choose wrong, but she has found her gifts and true blessings in fully owning her own unique and less traveled road. Jen's superpower is her ability to see where her clients are headed, reverse engineer the ways to get there, and stay beside them step-by-step so they can achieve success and increase their personal income.   To learn more about Jen and her work, you can go to: https://jenklineclark.com/site  Click here to book a discovery call with Jen: https://jenklineclark.com/book-discovery-call1649257537142    If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at: Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com            Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright             Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma            Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@grandmawhoisnotaverage             Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

The Lesson In Making An Assumption

EP258: In today's episode I share a recent experience where I made an assumption that was totally incorrect about my husband. As you listen, let it be a reminder to you to always be aware of how your thoughts about a situation or person may in fact be absolutely incorrect, even if you don't believe them to be. The definition of assumption is "a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof." But we THINK we have proof b/c we think our thoughts are fact. How could your life improve if you began questioning your thoughts and giving others the benefit of the doubt? Listen in as I share 5 tips that will improve the quality of your relationships and likely decrease conflict if you apply them when catching yourself in an assuming state of mind. Here is the blog post I referenced on the episode: https://motherhoodcommunity.com/how-to-stop-making-assumptions-in-life-relationships-work/ And here is the quote I shared from Don Miguel Ruiz in his book "The Four Agreements" that I felt was so on point with this topic: "We have the tendency to make assumptions about everything. The problem with making assumptions is that we believe they are the truth. We could swear they are real. We make assumptions about what others are doing or thinking - we take it personally - and then blame them and react by sending emotional poison with our word."  If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and subscribe to (or follow) the podcast (if you haven't already) so you don't miss any new episodes. EP256: This episode, as many are, was inspired by my own recent experience where I had a thought to send a card, but then I stalled on getting that nice gesture done. Do you do this too or am I the only oddball?!?! Fortunately I didn't stall too long, or worse, follow through at all! I GOT IT DONE! But as I thought about my experience and how often I actually DON'T act on these thoughts, I realized it was a perfect example of something that fits into the category of "just friggin do it!" Sending a thoughtful note seems like such a simple thing, a minor task that shouldn't take much time and means so much to the receiver, yet so many of us don't put that thought into action because we get caught up in our busy lives and bigger tasks that, in the end, probably don't matter as much! So my ask of you today is to FOLLOW THROUGH on that nice gesture you've thought of but may not have acted on yet... Get that card, take a few minutes to write that message you've been thinking about, and drop it in the mailbox! If you'd like to read about Christie Miller's cancer journey and why I felt compelled to send her a card, you can find her blog at: https://http://christiecrushedcancer.com/. When Greater Purpose Comes With A Wheelchair, with Sandie Roberts

EP255: This week's guest is Sandie Roberts, a Disability Advocate and model. After becoming suddenly disabled in 2019 and struggling to come to terms as her life was turned upside down, Sandie found joy through acceptance and recognizing that disability is not a bad word.. Sandy has spoken on television and radio, as a body confidence advocate and expert, a number of times. She has modeled for multiple household names on social media, television and in London Fashion Week. In this episode, Sandy and I talked about: The health challenges she experienced starting at a young age. How she dealt with the news that she will be paralyzed for the rest of her life. How her perception of what it means to live in a wheelchair has evolved.  How she's shifting perspectives about the kind of transformation a disability can bring to one's life. When Sandy became a full time wheelchair user at the age of 48, it was obviously a major turning point in her life, but as she says, it was not for the worse - it was for the better!  People only see the negative aspects of disability and not the ways it can transform your life for the better.  Sandy hopes to inspire listeners that adversity can be seen as the driving force for evolution rather than something that has to be merely "overcome". For her, being gifted with the force of life comes with a responsibility to use her difficulties to fuel personal growth, for the purpose of helping those whose lives she is lucky enough to touch.   To learn more about Sandy and her work, you can go to: Website: www.searchforsilverlinings.co.uk  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_searchforsilverlinings/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SearchForSilverLinings  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/SandyRoberts   If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at: Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com          Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright           Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma          Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma          Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@grandmawhoisnotaverage           Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

EP250: In this episode I share something new that I've begun that I'm super excited about… I'm learning to play the ukulele! It's been quite the journey to get here but I've finally arrived and I'm committed, excited, and practicing daily. I've always wanted to learn to play an instrument but I told myself I didn't have any talent for it, that I was tone deaf and I have a terrible voice so somewhere along the way I just decided it was too hard because it didn't come naturally to me. All really silly reasons to not take action on something you desire to do - and what I've come to realize are just more of those limiting beliefs! Recognizing these limiting beliefs were preventing me from doing something that was really a deep desire, because it kept coming up in my head, was my first realization. Then I started to pay attention to the signs that began appearing… Signs that told me it's time to JUST FRIGGIN' DO IT!  For me, the signs appeared in the following ways: One of my students shared that she began playing a ukulele and doing performances with a friend for the elderly in Assisted Living centers. A ukulele instructor recently joined my business coaching mastermind I've been in for 3 years. I decided to do this series, and as I was brainstorming ideas, playing the ukulele was one of the things that came to my mind. Another one of my students shared that she picked up a ukulele that had been sitting in the corner since her husband died 15 years ago and she just did a little mini-concert in our student community which just further inspired me. The funny thing is that I GAVE AWAY my ukulele I had purchased back in the fall of 2018 to my grandson. I took 1 local lesson and then NEVER PRACTICED! The difference this time is that I feel inspired, I have accountability, and I found a system that feels fun and doable.  And I have a beautiful new ukulele that I love taking out of its case to play. (If you're in the market for a ukulele, check out the Concert Ukulele I ordered on Amazon. It comes with a tuner!) Listen in to this episode where I share not only my recent journey to finally just friggin' start playing the ukulele but my attempt at age 13 to teach myself how to play the piano and how that turned out. Unfortunately, many of us fall into the DOING that keeps us on the hamster wheel of life which certainly will not bring us the life we desire. Because if it could, wouldn't we have it by now? So it's time to try something new!!! And that is to start following the BE, DO, HAVE model that says you first must BE the future version of yourself that has the life you desire. When you step into that version of yourself, your actions are those that will attract the things you want so that you will HAVE them. The mistake most people make is that they are behaving the way they've always behaved which is operating from an identity that has created their current reality. And they think that if they keep DOING the things they think need to be done, like work two jobs and run around frazzled and frustrated, they may eventually get what they want. But operating with the same identity you've been operating with up until now, will not get you closer to your goals. You must change who you are BEING.  Be the person who will attract the life you want. Get off the damn hamster wheel. And adopt the following behaviors that will attract what you want into your life: Write down what you want. Make it clear to the universe so it knows and can help you  Affirm what you want every day. State your desires as if they are already a part of your reality. Have a clear picture of the future reality you desire in your mind and visualize that picture regularly. Believe the universe has your back and wants to help you get what you want. You don't have to do all of the heavy lifting. The more heavy lifting you do, the more likely you are to slack on the internal work that is necessary to create the reality you want.  If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and subscribe to (or follow) the podcast (if you haven't already) so you don't miss any new episodes. The Lessons Of The Invisible Staircase

EP246: In this episode I share a concept I learned from the book “You Are Awesome” by Neil Pasricha. I loved hearing his explanation of the invisible staircase and how we tend to get stuck because we can't “see” the steps ahead of us.  Neil backs this concept up with facts, sharing studies that have been done that explain how our human brain works to keep us from thinking positively about the future when we hit a roadblock in life. As he also explained, it's helpful to look back and see the steps we've already taken and how we kept climbing in spite of past roadblocks which is something I encourage you to do after listening to this episode. I also explain a concept I came up with when thinking about sharing this today… The staircase landing!  Think about what a landing is… A stop on the way to the next step. It's quite possible you've found yourself lingering for too long at a point on your staircase of life, hesitating on taking a step forward due to fear of the unknown. I know I've done that!!! Because if we can't “see” what's ahead, it must be bad, right?!  And maybe this concept resonates because you find yourself on a landing right now… Listen in and learn the valuable lessons of the invisible staircase and how you can use it to understand that the faster you take the next step, the sooner you will get out of that bad place you may be standing (or sitting!) in.  It's just as Neil says: You are simply doing a crappy job of picturing what lies ahead! Because we ALL do that! So how about you start the practice of picturing the things you WANT in your life? What a great idea! After hearing this lesson, you'll likely realize how obvious it is that when you have faith that better things will come and you create a positive picture of the things you desire, the more quickly you'll take the next step.  So don't delay on taking that next step on your invisible staircase of life!!! Amd enjoy the climb! If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and subscribe to (or follow) the podcast (if you haven't already) so you don't miss any new episodes. Brenda's dream transformation didn't go as planned - when she quit her job to go full time in her coaching business, everything went wrong. She eventually ended up being homeless for 2 years and couch surfing, but through her mindset and perseverance, she now IS living that dream life she had envisioned, with a place of her own 2 blocks from the beach and seeing the business she loves growing and thriving. In this episode, Brenda and I talked about: The story of her growth trajectory and how she shares her lived experience in her coaching The biggest lessons she's learned in life, especially from her homeless experience How her perspective on money shifted, as she focused on abundance, even when it seemed she had very little Why she decided to start a podcast about people-pleasing Her life struggle is an inspirational message about perseverance, tenacity and possibilities. EP243: I start this episode by talking about the downloads I received - the thoughts that came to me when I got silent as I was contemplating how to share this breakthrough with my listeners. These downloads were about: How I see the pursuit of purpose as two important steps and why so many of us stop after the first step, leaving their purpose at just the inkling stage without any real pursuit, which is really sad. The three key components of the "finding purpose" puzzle that I explain and how they led me to finding my later-in-life purpose, so you have a real life example. I finish the episode by explaining the aha that came to me, after my coach pointed my blind spot, which had to do with why I had veered away from talking about my purpose. It's a common blind spot among business owners who want all of their clients to succeed so if you're a business owner who has already found your purpose, this part of the episode may be helpful to you. The great thing about breakthroughs is that, once that obstacle is cleared, the downloads come, along with so much clarity! So no more piddling around, talking about things that don't truly move the needle and speak to the incredible transformation my program provides which is finding the spark that will get you started down the path to a purposeful second half of life. I ran across this book recently and it looked decent so I downloaded it with one of my many Audible credits and I am LOVING IT. In fact, I'd say this book about being awesome is awesome!!! lol! I love finding great books that shift how we can look at things and this is one of those, taking a simple sentence and switching its punctuation so it turns from a negative into a positive. Just brilliant! I much prefer reading a book vs. listening, but I'm loving the author's voice and the way he presents the material in this audio book, like he's right in the room talking to me. Listen in and see if replacing a period - for a recent setback or obstacle you are currently facing that you may be using in your sentence of your life story - with a dot dot dot, gives you new hope for what may unfold in the future and helps you to keep moving forward because change will come, and I believe having this little mindset hack will get you over the “feeling in the dump” hump sooner. His virtual school was his reaction to the pandemic, which means it's one of the positive outcomes because Matt is now able to take his expertise anywhere in the world and awaken the musician in those of us who have always wanted to learn to play an instrument. After playing in “dodgy” rock bands in the late 80's and 90's, Matt moved from the UK to Andalusia to raise his 3 children and chickens and to make furniture. At the age of 45, he discovered a love of teaching, by pure coincidence, which led him to go back to school and get his degree. When the parents realized how much fun their children were having, he started teaching them too. And now, after taking his ukulele teaching talents to the internet, he has a thriving multi-six figure business teaching adults worldwide how to play what he calls “the easiest instrument ever!” In this episode, Matt and I talked about: His evolution from professional rock musician to music teacher. His transition from in-person to online teaching and how the medium accelerates the learning process.  How learning just one song has so many positive benefits and how anyone, at any age, can do it. The importance of having fun and doing what you love. Matt hopes to inspire you that it's never too late and you are never too old to do what you want to do, whether that's learning an instrument, setting up a business or going to Nepal. And THAT led to the inspiration for this episode, as well as a new process I just came up with while brainstorming this subject - the 4 Ws. (I love it when something amazing happens from inspired action!) In this episode I talk about how I've learned to shift my thoughts when I don't get what I want. I used to dwell on the negative instead of looking for the lessons. But now I'm able to pull myself out of that negative energy so much more quickly. It's made such a difference and given me so much insight on what I now don't ever perceive as failures. I also share a specific example of a failed goal from 4 years ago that turned me towards a completely different path, but ultimately towards a more a more fulfilling life that I now know was the right path, even though I couldn't see it in the midst of that failure at the time. Below I've listed the 4 Ws that will help you remember what to ask yourself after you experience a situation where you don't get what you want. Use them to help you move you into a more proactive and positive place instead of a reactive and negative one.  WHAT WINS WHY WHETHER To get the specifics of what each W means and the process to go through, tune into the episode! EP238: This week's interview is with Ryan Lesser, Co-Founder and Life Coach at InnerShift. I met Ryan through his partner, Alex Paulos, who invented a unique personality typing methodology where your genetic characteristics are “read” to tell you who you were really born to be. This reading includes an overall assessment of your general character as well as your unique personality traits, and lets you know if you've been operating in alignment with your inborn personality type or if you've been operating with a chosen personality that you've adopted, thinking it will help you more easily navigate life. What happens when you don't operate as the person you were born to be, you aren't living in your truth - it's like you are walking around with a mask on - which will take you off course and away from your true path and purpose.  People who operate from a chosen personality often find themselves frustrated and feeling stressed, which will ultimately cause health challenges due to the impact of constant stress on the body. One must live from a place of authenticity, knowing who they are and the ways in which they are gifted, in order to find true fulfillment in life. When I first heard about this methodology, I jumped at the chance to have a reading and found that I had been living most of my life out of alignment with my inborn personality, which I've since learned is about 70% of our population!  The discovery of this unique methodology has made such a difference in my life that I've since been personally trained by Alex Paulos and have incorporated these sessions into my Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School™ to ensure that my students are creating their goals and dreams in alignment with their most authentic self and not from the imposter they may be operating as.  Being able to witness the transformational experiences my students get in finally becoming who they are meant to be has been a coach's dream. So I thought it would be fun and inspiring to invite Ryan on to talk about some of the recent transformations we've seen.  In this episode, we talk about: How Ryan first got interested in personalities, got introduced to Alex, and started InnerShift. What the “typing” experience is like and what happens during a session. Sharing real stories of the before and after shifts that occurred with a few of Laurie's students after learning about their inborn personalities and traits. EP237: In this month's episode of my "Just Friggin' Do It" series, I share a long-dreamed-about random act of kindness that finally came to fruition. You may wonder why it took me so long to do something so wonderful, and that is part of the reason I wanted to do this episode because it is the same question I've asked myself. If I can dissect what held me back, then perhaps my reflections will help you take action on something you've been thinking about but not taking action on… My curiosity about why it took me so long to do this random act of kindness led to the following questions and some answers, which I dive into in this episode: Why did I hold back on taking action on something that kept coming up, even if it was just a simple, random, act of kindness? Why were my feelings more important than the impact of my action? Why did I finally act? What made the difference? The feeling that I got from doing this was amazing and of course confirmed what I preach and teach: the magic is on the other side of our comfort zones. And that is the truth we all need to keep front and center whenever we procrastinate an idea that keeps coming up! So let me ask you, have you been stalling on an idea that keeps popping into your head, but you continue to push it away, find excuses not to do it, or talk yourself out of it for no good reason? Can you take a minute to imagine the rewards (aka magic) that action will bring? If that idea has again appeared in your consciousness as a result of hearing this episode, let this be your call to FINALLY Just Friggin' Do It!!! She says you'll most often catch her playing on the computer dressed in one of her favorite t-shirts imprinted with a cartoon character. Jill's been an avid follower and practitioner of personal development for 50+ years, long before it was a popular topic. She says she realized, about 10 years into her full-time teaching career, that her heart was not into teaching children and that she wanted to organize and run women's retreats.  Retirement has not slowed her down one bit. In fact, it's allowed her to fulfill her dreams of advocating personal development to her now adult students. She recently held her 14th retreat.  In this episode, Jill and I talked about: The story behind her brand “The Geeky Grandma”   Why she transitioned from teaching 2nd graders to adults Her persistence to personal growth and development and how it led her to a love of retreats. Her realization about what caused her constant sore throats and lifelong addiction to cough drops One of Jill's favorite quotes is from Steven R. Covey: "Begin with the end in mind." She is a firm believer in not waiting until midlife before you start designing your dream. Don't get stuck by believing you have to know all of the steps. Just start with what you're curious about and take one step towards doing something that feeds that curiosity.   Jill says: “Even if you are mired down in a choice that doesn't feel so great, you can always start dreaming, planning, and preparing for that dreamlife right where you are.”   To learn more about Jill and her work, you can go to: Email: mmccar1@twcny.rr.com  Podcast: https://anchor.fm/jill-mccarthy  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1834109433336492  Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/jill.mccarthy.585  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/owning_your_power/  Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/empowering_women/_created/    If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at: Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com               Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright               Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma               Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma                  Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

EP235: This "lessons learned" episode was inspired by a download I had this past week about regrets that nudged me to share a couple of my own personal experiences with them. One I share was a big regret for a long time, but fortunately it was diffused over time and is now no longer a regret at all. Another one was destined to be what I call a "deathbed" regret that I nipped in the bud because I finally took action to prevent that missed opportunity from happening. As you can hear in my voice, I'm pretty passionate about this subject because I don't want you to get to the end of your life with ANY regrets! So start thinking about potential regrets you MAY have based on something you desire but haven't pursued. And tune into why you desire them to ensure it's a desire of the heart because those will become the biggest regrets. Perhaps the examples of scary actions I took to avoid future regrets, that have worked out pretty well for me, will inspire you to take action to avoid your own future regrets. Her online courses, The Bump-to-Baby Roadmap & Expecting 101...You're Adopting™ have helped hundreds of families (and grandparents!) prepare for life with their newborns.  Over the past 8 years Valerie has been helping hundreds of parents adjust to their new family so that they can approach the newborn stage with as much calm confidence as possible. And so that they know what to do with their little newborns. In this episode, Valerie and I talked about: Understanding what a Doula is and what they do How she learned about postpartum and birth Doula and how she started Best qualities to look out for if you want to be a Doula Necessary tips for grandparents to best help our children navigate new babies Many people are probably not familiar with what a postpartum doula is. The Lesson About Our Perception Of Time

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 16, 2022 17:48

EP233: This "lessons learned" episode was inspired by my recent free training and the questions I've received by some who've attended. It got me thinking about how, when we are trying to make a decision - especially when it's something we want (but something that may be a bit scary and out of our comfort zone), we use time as an easy excuse. And when we do this, it's through a lens of lack vs. a lens of abundance. We look at what taking this action will COST us in time vs. what we will GAIN from the time we put in. Will it take time from our already busy schedule and cause more overwhelm, or will the time we take give us more quality of time in the future? Two completely different perceptions when changing the lens we look through, right?! Let's use some example questions to show the difference when looking through the lack vs. the abundance lenses. (I'll use questions related to enrolling in the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School since they are what inspired this episode and the best examples I can think of at this moment). The questions posed through the lack lens might be similar to these:  How much time will this take? How long are the lessons?  How much time will the homework take? How long will the calls take? Can I make this work if I have two jobs (aka not enough time)? The questions when looking through the abundance lens tend to result in more helpful answers. (I'm reminded of the quote: The quality of your life depends on the quality of your questions!) How will this give me more time? How will this improve the time I have?  How will it help me feel less frazzled / overwhelmed / exhausted? How will this improve my relationships?  How will my life become happier and more fulfilled?  Do you see how these questions lead to answers about what is desired? More QUALITY time! And maybe when the time you have is improved, you'll actually FEEL like you have more of it!!! (Funny how that works!) Can you see the difference in what you learn by asking questions through different lenses? As I said in the episode, most of us want what more quality time will bring us, but we aren't looking through the right lens and asking better questions that will actually help us make better decisions! Manu of us are so quick to invest a dollar to get five back when it comes to putting coins in a slot machine in Vegas or spending it on a lottery ticket, but investing real time, which most of us don't have enough of, to 5x the quality of it? Nah!!!  Unfortunately, only the ones who are lucky enough to be so sick of the stuck place we are in, stumble into this realization AFTER THE FACT, that the time we put in was sooooo worth the return on our investment. So my suggestion for you today is to take this awareness with you and start questioning your perception of time when making important decisions about what you want in life. Don't ever rule out what you want because of time because you'll never get the time you want with that lens. EP232: My special guest this week is one of my amazing Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School™ students, Denise Hughes. Denise shares her story of signing up at a very low point in her life, when she was suffering from “long” Covid with very little energy and very far from living her best life. But fortunately, like all of my students who decide to take action, she was finally ready to do something about it and she knew she couldn't do it on her own…  Denise's story is nothing short of remarkable as it shows how our path to the dream life we desire is not always what we think it will be. But Denise shows how once we shift our internal energy by changing our mindset, we begin to attract what we desire.  She is also a testament to how staying in abundance, no matter how hard your journey gets, and continuing to apply the tools she learned in the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School™ brought her to where she is today, with more balance and happiness than she's ever had. In this episode, Denise and I talked about: What caused her to sign up for the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School™ Her pretty strong skepticism that it would work for her How her relationships have all improved and her friends and family have noticed How almost everything she wrote down as “dream” goals when she was going through the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School™ lessons, that she thought were pipe dreams at the time she wrote them, have come true - including her dream job. I know the story of Denise will inspire you because it has inspired me! This lesson was a great reminder to me that downloads aren't just messages that are for us but ones we are meant to share. It was so amazing to receive this download and then to turn it into a lesson for others and see it shift perspectives and make an impact. So which of the 3 Ds, if any, are you most guilty of?  It was wonderful to receive another example of how nudges, if we pay attention and act on them, lead us to where we are meant to go and teach us beautiful things - and often create a ripple effect. And because I love alliteration, let me end by saying... Downloads are downright delightful and definitely make a difference!

Fred - a 72 year old divorced mom of adult children, and a grandma, who recently celebrated 24 years of sobriety - recognized she had reached a new low point in her life where she had no direction, no focus, and sadly, no desire. In her words, she felt stuck, stagnant and miserable.  Shortly after admitting to herself that she needed help, she stumbled upon the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. Once she made that commitment, she was ALL IN, and by following the program to a “T”, she got the breakthroughs she needed, becoming an inspiration to her fellow students. In this interview, she shares: How she came upon me and the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School™. Why she decided to invest in herself. [JFDI #3] Life-Shifting Actions That Led To The Real Me

EP229: In this month's episode of my "Just Friggin' Do It" series, I talk about the 4 biggest actions I took that led me closer to the life that I believe I came here to live as the most authentic version of myself. All of them came from my gut, meaning something deep inside of me pushed me to do them, while my brain was, in most cases, trying to talk me out of them. . These were actions I had never done and all of these life shifts have happened in the last 16 years of my life, after I finally, at age 47, admitted to myself that I was not living the life I wanted to. Looking back, I know my gut had been sending me signals of dissatisfaction in both my marriage and my career for a long time, but I ignored them. Then one day I found it more scary to keep living the life I was settling for than to start taking action and figure it out. Little did I know where it would lead! And little did I know that that confused, empty, unlit version of me was totally misaligned with my authentic self and the person I was supposed to be.  Now in my 60s, I am finally living from the most authentic version of myself, listening to my gut, and using the gifts I didn't even know I had. The 4 biggest shifts that ultimately led me to finding the real me, that I share in this episode, are: Reconnecting with an old boyfriend (after years of denying that that love was still very much alive within me) Signing up for my first, high-priced online course (after pushing through the fear that it was way over what I could afford at the time) Finding and hiring a coach who has taught me so much about life and creating the business I never dreamed was possible. Learning my inborn personality and, in so doing, finding a mentor who helped me realize the gifts I was born with.  And now, with the experience I've gained from this amazing journey to find myself, I get to help other people find out who they are so they can make the rest their best. It is an unbelievable treat that I will be eternally grateful I was able to discover! So let me ask you, are you acting on your gut instincts or are you letting logic (your brain) make all the decisions? And if the latter, are you feeling like the old me, dissatisfied, empty, and unlit about your life? If so, maybe it's time to lean in, let your gut lead the way, and just friggin' do it!!! The Lesson In Trying

EP227: Today's lesson in trying came from a recent direct message I received from someone on Instagram, who shared with me that she's very unhappy with her life but told me she was "trying." Over the course of the conversation, it became apparent to me that all she was doing was thinking about taking action but never really doing anything to make changes. So I took that as a sign to add this topic as a great "lesson learned" topic! Like I mention at the beginning, the word "try" isn't always disempowering. It depends on the context with which it's used. The point I'm making is we often use it as an excuse to get out of something we need to get done. So listen in to what I've learned, as both a user of the word myself and hearing it often as a coach, how it's one of those words you need to watch for, and my best tips for what to do when it crosses your lips which I include here as follows: Start to be aware of how often you use it and notice when other people use it. Why did you feel the need to use it? Are you really making it a maybe? What are the chances you'll actually do it? What is behind the lack of commitment? Dig into that! (Listen to my examples of possible reasons that may be causing this.) Are you "trying" a lot but not getting much done? Then I suggest you start replacing "I'm gonna try to do it." with "I AM going to do it." and see how that feels. Don't be afraid to commit and get the damn thing done! It WILL make a difference in your life!!! P.S. The book I mentioned is called "Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life: How to Unlock Your Full Potential for Achievement and Success" by Brian Tracy. I read this book a few years ago and it was a game changer for me as I began setting big goals for my second half. The Lesson In The F Word

EP225: Today's lesson is actually more of a realization that came up when I was creating a Reel, a newer feature on Instagram and Facebook that I've learned, where you can do short videos using different kinds of audios. I've been having a blast with them because they let me share what I think are valuable messages but in an informal and often silly way - because I love using humor. The world is too serious so the more I can make someone laugh, while also making them think, the better! So I came across this audio that I really liked but it had the F word in it. And because I don't normally use that word and I've NEVER used it on social media, it gave me pause. And it made me really afraid to use it because I was worried about what others would think. (I know I shouldn't care but the  human in me got in my way!) The lesson arrived as this realization that the F word triggers me based on my belief system. Of course!!! So many words our ears hear do this to us! So I decided to explore my reaction and share my observations in this episode which were: application of the F word is so very different based on the generation as well as the environment you were brought up in. (The F word is built into our belief system from childhood just like most beliefs!) judgement is usually placed on the person using the F word, or any trigger word for that matter, instead of examining the belief behind the trigger. if I find that using the F word in some specific cases, like the Reel I did with the audio I shared on the episode, is effective and useful, then others will too. So I embraced it and let it fly! And in so doing, I found that the act of posting that Reel came with such freedom, acceptance and understanding. It was such a great lesson and reminder for me that we all just need to be who we are and know that there is so much more to a person than the silly words they use.  If you'd like to check out the Reel I did, you can find it on Instagram or on my Facebook page. EP221: Yep, this episode is a doozy!!! I'm really stepping out into woo woo land with this one! I go into a lot more of my backstory than I typically do in my episodes which, including the telling of this amazing experience, makes this one a bit longer than most. I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this appointment with a Medium. All I hoped for was that my mom would be able to connect with the love of her life and get something from it and boy oh boy did that happen in spades! This is an example of something that I wanted to do for a long time. I began thinking about it before I ever met Gail, the Medium. And as I said in the episode, I believe I attracted her into my life, and perhaps my dad had a hand in that. But however it happened, the desire of my mind was enough to bring the opportunity into existence, and for that I'm immensely grateful. It was an experience of a lifetime. It will be hard to match it. It was unbelievable that I actually got to communicate with my loved one who is no longer physically here. And for any skeptic out there, I know it was him because his personality came through exactly how he was. It was uncanny. And I was able to get questions answered and the thoughts I've had about my mother's situation and how he would feel about it were validated.   So I finally JUST FRIGGIN' DID IT! I took this thought of mine and put it into action. It was a crazy thought, a scary action (for many reasons), and it was so easy to keep putting off, once I met Gail and knew she could make this happen for me. And now it's become one of the most magical experiences of my life. How about that?!!! So let my example be an inspiration to you to just go out and JUST FRIGGIN' DO IT!!! Take action on it today! EP220: This week's guest is Donna Yates Ferris, a yoga and transformation coach as well as the writer of a “I-can't-put-it-down” book that I had the chance to read before our interview. It was so fun to do this interview because I felt like I was talking to a friend.  In her memoir “We've Got to Stop Meeting Like This,” Donna shares her path to inner peace, one that was sidelined by repeated difficulties - divorce, grief,  illness, addiction, and more. She openly shares the details of a short period in her life that began with the dissolution of her 20+ year marriage after discovering her husband's affair. This was just the beginning of a 3 year roller coaster that led her to become an expert on resilience.  If you feel overwhelmed and maybe even defeated by life's changes and challenges and need some inspiration by hearing a true story that proves you never know what the future has in store for you, this conversation is for you. In this interview, we talk about: what prompted her to write a memoir and share her story some of the things she went through without trying to give away too many of the jaw-dropping details the idea of burning karma battling addiction and how yoga therapy and a dog helped her Once I picked Donna's book up, I couldn't stop reading it so if you're looking for a juicy story that has just about everything in it - from extramarital affairs to navigating divorce with teens to online dating to changing jobs/careers late in life to exploring a new passion to sudden loss to recovery and ultimately to a happy ending, this book is a must have. EP219: This episode is a continuation of the previous two "Lessons Learned" episodes (215 and 217) so if you haven't listened to those, you may want to check them out too. This one, just like the others, are great lessons independent of the others but they are related in that they are lessons about the way we talk to ourselves and how we can improve that language.   In this one, I talk about certain words that need to be removed from our vocabulary completely because they cut off any hope of a solution, and how simple word changes in a question send completely different messages to our subconscious.   It's a pretty simple but useful trick, and if you try it, the quality of your life is guaranteed to improve! I even share a terrific quote that you will probably want to write down and post on your mirror as a daily reminder for how important it is to ask yourself better questions!   If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and subscribe to (or follow) the podcast (if you haven't already) so you don't miss any new episodes.   If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at:   Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com       Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright       Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma       Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma           Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

EP218: This week's guest is Cindy Williams Schrauben. Cindy lives in Michigan where she writes books for kids that range from the truly serious to the seriously silly. Her debut picture book, This Could Be You was released on April 1, 2022. Becoming a published author at 63 has inspired Cindy to empower other mature adults with the mindset that it is never too late to dream. When not writing or connecting with other authors, Cindy might be found dissecting her grandsons' shenanigans for story ideas, reading on the floor in the bookstore, or eating ice cream… ideally all at once.   In this episode, Cindy and I talk about: how she became a children's author her book writing journey - from start to finish the fear of failure that hindered her from pursuing writing for far too long  how her life has changed now that she's doing what she loves   Cindy admits she's NOT always been one to persevere – in fact, when she was younger she often would quit when things got difficult. But she's living proof of the George Eliot quote: “it's never too late to be what you might have been!” Listen in as she shares her perspective on what worked, what didn't, and how she finally persevered despite challenges.   To learn more about Cindy and her work, you can go to: Website: www.cindyschrauben.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cindy.w.schrauben  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cindyschrauben/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/CindySchrauben  Book: https://cindyschrauben.com/product-2/   If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at: Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com                  Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright                Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma                 Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma            Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

EP217: This is a twofer episode because I'm sharing TWO Lessons Learned instead of just one! The first is a lesson I learned earlier this week from renting an Airbnb "apartment" that turned out to be not what I expected... I decided to add it to this episode at the last minute, while it was fresh in my mind, because it's a great lesson in paying more attention to detail and I thought it may be helpful to someone who is planning an upcoming trip! The second lesson learned is the one I planned to do, which is an exercise I did at a recent business retreat. It's a bit of a follow up to the one I did last week so if you missed my episode on the Inner Critic, check it out here. Make sure you actually DO the exercise and don't think just by listening to it, that suffices as doing it! Unlike most episodes, this one requires extra EFFORT! ;) I promise that going through the process as I describe is super effective. What came up for you? How do these statements tie back to the Inner Critic exercise you did? Are there parallels or did new stuff come up? I'll be sharing one of these episodes every Friday, with the exception of the first Friday of the month, which is when I'll be airing my "Just Friggin' Do It" monthly episodes.  In these "Lessons Learned" episodes, I'll be sharing something I have recently learned that I believe will provide you with new insight or a learning opportunity, maybe with an exercise - like this episode - or simply inspire you to look at something that has happened, maybe a mistake, as a great lesson. In today's episode, I share an exercise that I did at a recent business retreat that focused on mindset. The exercise is a great way to uncover those unhelpful messages from the "Inner Critic" who unfortunately resides in all of us and controls a lot of our thoughts and decisions, keeping so many of us from achieving our full potential. Listen in and do the exercise to discover how to catch those negative messages and turn them into affirmations that will diminish your Inner Critic's voice and remove some of the perceived blocks you may be experiencing. Pay attention to the resistance. It's often fear in disguise. And once you overcome the resistance, magic happens. I'm having SO.MUCH.FUN doing Reels. Check them out if you're on Instagram and let me know what you think!
