The 1995 book became a runaway hit: It was translated into 30 languages, sold more than seven million copies and stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for two years. A new set of journal cards for the next three weeks is available for you here. Questions from the audio: What new leaf do you want to turn over? Are you wasting the autumn? What are your authentic wants? What do you want more or less of in your life, so that you can love the life you're leading? Are you open to change? Do you love the life you're leading? EP117: The idea for this episode was triggered by my own aha moments while reading some of the May entries in my book "Simple Abundance" by Sarah Ban Breathnach. I had never thought about how our environment, the house we live in and the items contained in it are indicators of authenticity AND how this authenticity, or lack of it, impacts a feeling an abundance. Wow. Wow. Wow. She has some great questions you need to ask yourself as you are playing the role of "dispassionate detective" while walking around your house. It made me think about past houses and belongings that made me feel inauthentic. What surrounds you daily that you need to get rid of? What mementos of your past help or hinder your movement into the future? Do you have your own sacred space that makes you feel happy and whole? If you're anything like me, it will make you think about your house in a different way and perhaps make some positive changes to bring more authenticity and abundant feelings into your life.! Since I just covered the topic of authenticity in my free "Ignite Your Second Half Soul" training, this subject aligned perfectly with that which is maybe why it resonated so deeply. EP111: In this episode, I pulled from a series of excerpts in a book I'm reading called "Simple Abundance" by Sarah Ban Breathnach. The excerpts are from her March readings really stuck with me when I read them (the book has 365 messages of abundance for each day of the year) because of the quotes she used to introduce the various topics that center around the authenticity, acceptance, and self care - the bottom line being: to celebrate the beauty that is within and love on it every day.  I captured the quotes below for those who like reading better than listening. :) "Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be content with what you have." -- Doris Mortman "We are not born all at once, but by bits. The body first, and the spirit later. Our mothers are racked with the pains of our physical birth; we ourselves suffer the longer pains of our spiritual growth." -- Mary Antin "So many women just don't know how great they really are. They come to us all vogue outside and vague on the inside." --Mary Kay Ash "Beauty is an internal light, a spiritual radiance that all women have but most women hide, unconsciously, denying its existence. What we do not claim remains invisible." --Marianne Williamson "Seek not outside yourself, heaven is within." --Mary Lou Cook "Most of us think of other women as beauties, never ourselves. But every woman was created by Spirit to be a genuine beauty. We learn how to reveal to the world our unique radiance only after we acknowledge it ourselves. Today, take as your personal mantra: "I am what I am and what I am is wonderful" --Sarah Ban Breathnach "Any little bit of self-nurturance is very frightening for most of us." --Julia Cameron "If you want to find the answers to the Big Questions about your soul, you'd best begin with the Little Answers about your body." --George Sheehan "Self-development is a higher duty than self-sacrifice." --Sarah Ban Breathnach Now, TAKE ACTION: Today, spend one hour on self care. Sarah suggests a nice long bath with candles and some good-smelling oils. Then, when done, reflect and take inventory of 20 things you like about yourself. Write them in your Gratitude Journal. Start with 10 things you like about your physical self and then 10 things you like about your personality. If you have trouble making a list of 20, it's ok. Start with less but make a goal of doing this every day and soon you'll have your 20 and probably more. As Sarah says: "Seek only to be gentle and loving to yourself in small ways and watch your self-care increase." (There's a 10th quote!) And so will the realization that you REALLY ARE GREAT!!! Instead, it promotes “generating a network of women” to support each other's businesses It provides entrepreneurial training including mastermind groups, utilizing Zoom effectively, and developing personal growth “Impact focus” or making a difference in a positive way is an essential part of membership Commonly heard-- “I had no idea there are women out there that are willing to support me.” The WPN aims to dispel that belief Women tend to be very helpful to each other given the opportunity The WPN fosters “Coopetition” rather than competition Speaking is one of the highest paid professions. Why aren't there more women doing that? Nancy had a major failure at the beginning of the recession in 2007. The idea was good, but the execution was flawed. She lost a lot of money, but then she met someone that helped her start it up again. This time-- the right way. Her book, The One Philosophy, says that we all should treat everybody as if they are “the one” [who has the power and resources to change your life for the better]. BOOK OF THE WEEK My friend Katie Taylor (IG: @_katietaylor) changed my life a little when she sent me this book as a gift earlier this Spring. Simple Abundance is a daily devotion type of book that shares messages of creativity, spiritual practices, and reflections for a living a more authentic self. I don't just have books on a shelf - I have book children so it's hard to pick a favorite, but the fact this one rarely is sitting on a shelf and instead, in whatever room I was last in tells you how much I love and how often I read this one. Sarah starts each day with a short title and a quote dating back from the 1600s or all the way up to Lady Gaga, so if you're at all a quote person, you'll love it just for that. If the size of the book intimidates you - don't let it. Each "chapter" ranges 1 -3 pages, so totally do-able to read daily while your coffee brews or while you let the dog out. At the end of each month, she shares practical ideas for implementing the topics from the month. For example - November she had themes of following the Light, so one of her "Try This at Home" tips was to create a Caution Closet that had a portable light and other items needed in an emergency situation. Right after those, she shares a list of "Simple Abundance" ideas to make your life easier or better in some way - like having a battery drawer that's fully stocked so you never get frustrated because you don't have a battery for the TV remote or your child's favorite toy. The ebb almost feels like something is wrong, you're not doing it right, it shouldn't be this way, and can become a desperate attempt to get into the flow - upbeat happy and blissed out phase where everything is going great. There's no shortage of books helping us get into and then stay in the flow and be happy. But there's good stuff in the ebb too, even though it usually doesn't feel like it in the moment. Helicopter Parenting (0:00:00) For those parents that are listening, we all want the best for our children, so naturally we get involved in their lives to support them where they may need help. But what does it look like when this involvement goes a step too far? Maybe you've heard the term “helicopter parenting” before, which describes this phenomenon that seems to be on the rise. But what does it mean to be a “helicopter parent”? Today we are joined by Dr. Kristin Moilanen, a professor of Child Development and Family Studies, here to talk with us about the effects of helicopter parenting. Simple Abundance (0:15:28) The book Simple Abundance has been instrumental in helping the more than 7 million people who bought copies to find joy and balance, and with us is the author, Sarah Ban Breathnach, to teach you how you can do the same. Christmas Candy Windows (0:35:22) A classic Christmas activity for many is admiring the Macy's candy window displays—preferably with a hot chocolate in hand. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to the giant, elaborate ornaments purely made of candy that decorate the Macy's display cases. I stand in awe of the creativity and dedication required to make each unique ornament, and I've always wondered what it really takes to make one. Joining us is Pam McMurtry, expert crafter and creator of candy window displays, to share what it takes to make these 100-pound ornaments, as well as give us tips on how to use candy in our decorations. Pets and Mental Health (0:50:36) There are some researchers out there that believe that having a pet can make you happier—but is there any truth to this? Here to dive a little deeper into the subject with us is Hal Herzog teacher, researcher and anthrozoologist. In Praise of Nurses (1:07:09) There are many professions that are staples of our society that primarily go uncelebrated. Teachers, social workers, and healthcare professionals just to name a few. One woman wanted to celebrate her twin sister, a labor and delivery nurse, who had undergone a tough shift. In October, Laura McIntyre posted a picture of her sister Caty Nixon. In the picture Caty is depicted wiping her tears after sharing about her day. She had worked 50+ hours in 4 days and had just helped deliver a stillborn. In the post, Laura praised her sister for working hard for little to no recognition and said, “Caty (& all other nurses) you are SPECIAL. You bless your patients & their families more than you will ever know.” We are lucky to be joined by both Caty and Laura as they share their experience with this post going viral and what it means to nurses everywhere. Weekend Review (1:23:39) Lisa and Richie share what new movies are coming out this weekend and tell us about fun events happening across the country.

A writer of remarkable wisdom, warmth and compassion, Sarah Ban Breathnach (pronounced “Bon Brannock”) has become a trusted voice to women around the world. Sarah is the author of thirteen books including the #1 New York Times bestsellers Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy and Something More: Excavating Your Authentic Self and she is the creator of The Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude. Sarah’s work celebrates quiet joys, simple pleasures, and well-spent moments. By reminding us to search for the small and the sweet in our daily round with appreciation and awe, we find the beauty in the everyday. Sarah’s ground-breaking book, Simple Abundance, has sold over five-million copies in the US, topped the New York Times Bestsellers list for two years and has been translated into 28 languages. Simple Abundance is also responsible for introducing two concepts—the “Gratitude Journal” and the term “authentic self" into the American conversation. Sarah’s follow up to Simple Abundance, Something More, debuted at number one on the bestseller lists of the NY Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and Publisher’s Weekly and has sold over 1.2 million copies to date. Sarah also became the first author in the history of the Wall Street Journal’s weekly compilation of best-selling books to appear in both the Number One (Simple Abundance) and Number Two slots (The Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude). Sarah’s other titles include: The Best Part of the Day (her first foray into children’s books), Peace and Plenty: Finding Your Path to Financial Serenity, The Peace and Plenty Journal of Well Spent Moments, Romancing the Ordinary, The Simple Abundance Companion, The Illustrated Discovery Journal, A Man’s Journey to Simple Abundance, Moving On, The Victorian Nursery Companion and Mrs. Sharp’s Traditions. Oprah Winfrey has called Sarah’s work “life-changing” and Sarah has been a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show and OWN’s Super Soul Sunday. Additionally, Sarah has been a contributing editor of Good Housekeeping and a nationally syndicated columnist for The Washington Post Writer's Group, and was named as one of the 50 women redefining what it means to be fifty today by MORE Magazine.  In 1995, Ban Breathnach founded the Simple Abundance Charitable Fund, which has aided over 100 non-profit organizations by awarding over one-million dollars in financial support. Time Magazine has called Sarah, "the Martha Stewart of the soul" and Deepka Chopra has said "Sarah Ban Breathnach is a one-woman women’s movement, an awakener of awareness whose simple message has timeless roots…She exemplifies a surging social movement much greater than herself.  This is just the subversively cosmic voice society needs." Author of the international phenomenon “Simple Abundance,” Sarah Ban Breathnach opens up about the spiritual lessons she learned from earning a multimillion-dollar fortune and eventually losing it all. “Simple Abundance” is a collection of comforting, practical and simple essays written for women who want to live their most authentic lives. The 1995 book became a runaway hit: It was translated into 30 languages, sold more than seven million copies and stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for two years. The book’s success made Sarah a multi-millionaire but the wealth didn't last, and a little more than a decade later, Sarah found herself alone on her sister's doorstep with nothing but a single suitcase and her beloved cat. In her memoir, “Peace and Plenty,” Sarah shares the story of her rapid rise and fall, the truths she discovered about herself, and her journey back to health and happiness.

Tea with a Titan: Conversations Steeped in Greatness |Achievement | Olympics | Olympians| Success | Athletes | Entrepreneurs

What we cover: "What the world needs now is love, sweet love." -- Burt Bacharach   About three weeks ago, my four-year-old, JouJou had her first ballet recital with North Vancouver’s stellar organization Pink Petal Ballet, designed less to teach young girls the perfect arabesque, and more to teach young girls concepts like self-love and kindness. The recital concluded with 300 young girls on stage singing in questionable harmony the classic lyrical genius of Burt Bacharach: “What the world needs now, is love sweet love,… it’s the only thing that there’s just too little love.” However, thanks to artistic visionaries and thought leaders like Wendy Williams-Watt who sees opportunity for beauty and self-expression all around her, the quantity of love shown and received and felt is growing exponentially around the world. Love for oneself, love for community, love for country, love for the planet. In fact, her most talked about project to date Big Love Ball now has a home on every continent globally. If you’re not familiar with Big Love Ball, it is the incarnation of the glue that holds societies, countries, and families together – the most powerful single-word in any language, love – written in simple type across the width of a ginormous 5-foot in diameter to be exact, inflatable ball. It’s been called inflatable sculpture; an enormous beach ball that says the one thing we most want to say and hear and feel. Love. Wendy Williams-Watt is a neat person, and the reason this conversation is so important is two-fold. One, we talk about love. Why we’re so afraid to show it. What it feels like when we’re missing it. What it feels like when we’re in it. But, we also talk about what it means to not just have ideas – which, when you’re as creative a person as Wendy is, is kind of like breathing – but actually doing something about them. I say it all the time: “The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers, but most of all, the world needs dreamers who do.” Wendy is a dreamer who does, and this episode is an invitation to you too, to be a dreamer who does. Small admin note: I typically credit that quote as having come from Eleanor Roosevelt, but alas, I went to verify it the other day and I learned it was Sarah Ban Breathnach, writer of Simple Abundance. For years, Wendy was respected in the city of Vancouver for her role concepting and operating the go-to lifestyle destination shop called Liberty – it was a place to go and just lose yourself in the awe of the finely curated pieces. The energy in that space for me, nearly 20 years ago, as a junior copywriter just starting out and living across the street from it, was the feeling of “one day…” It was like walking into a dream. When Wendy transitioned from being the décor expert, the entrepreneur with the thriving enterprise, she experienced an epiphany one day when the battery of her mouse died and she saw the words: “connection lost” across her screen. Her daughter had just moved out, a relationship had come to an end, and Wendy realized she had too much stuff and not enough love and people. She let herself walk through the pain and the loneliness and when she came out on the other side, a whole new articulation of love waited for her on the other side. If you have not seen Big Love Ball, and Wendy’s other love-enhancing, love-expressing projects like Pink Ring and Writing on Ribs, please – no, really, please – check out MJDionne.com and check out the podcaster tab. You need to see this work. I hate to say it, but I’m going to anyway. There is perhaps an underlying feeling that to talk about love is a "female" thing to do. That it’s somehow not cool for guys to engage in dialogue this potentially vulnerable in nature. Which is why, I invite you all to tune in – love is as universal as it gets. And this is a talk for us all. In this time of a particular president talking about walls, and travel bans, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, and we have fear in London in light of last week’s London Bridge attack, and in Manchester after the Ariana Grande concert terror attack, what the world needs now, is love sweet love. Wendy talks about what it was like touring the Fire Halls around ground zero on the anniversary of 9/11 last year, and the reaction of these big, burly men – as soon as they saw Big Love Ball, it became an invitation to talk and connect and share. When they brought Big Love Ball to ground zero and invited people to pen a loving note on the ball itself, Wendy describes this feeling of eutopia – love doesn’t see religion, gender, nationality.  She was back in New York this week, with her latest project, Big Love Button as seen on Good Morning America – congrats to you on that, sister.
