Okay so I'm going to level with you... I was PETRIFIED to leave the safe, unhappy comfort of my 9-5 job. I couldn't even imagine being self employed, running my own business or having freedom and flexibility over my time and location. I had a dream it would happen, but I didn't really think it actually would. And that's because I was scared. I was so scared of what life after the corporate 9-5 looked like that I didn't dare visualise what it could be like. It was only when I got over my fears, backed myself and took a leap of faith and quit that it all started falling into place. Co-founding JFDI.Asia, Southeast Asia's first startup accelerator, gave Hugh Mason the chance to work with and invest in the ideas of hundreds of local entrepreneurs, just as the regional startup scene got going. He's also worked with some of the biggest multinationals in the region to inspire corporate innovation. Now with the freedom to reflect on what makes some ventures succeed and others not, he's partway through a PhD that's helping to reveal the underlying psychology of startup founders, the networks they need to succeed and what his own career as an entrepreneur was all about. "The conclusion I've come to, which academic research also shows, is that a well-run accelerator does make a difference by attracting great talent. The aggregation of great talent and the community you build around an accelerator are more important than any kind of process. There isn't a magic selection process to pick out winners and ensure success. We created a community because we wanted to bring people together. If you think of trying to get chemical reactions to happen, you put some molecules in a box and shake it and try and bang them into each other." - Hugh Mason “The theory that I'm trying to explore through my Ph.D. is that when we are stuck on the level of operational or immediate activities in front of us, we can't see the big picture. The key is reframing what you're trying to understand and control, knowing where that's in conflict, and reframing things to remove the conflict. Pivoting is about reframing. If there's no way to do that, it means that's a good time to close down and move on.” - Hugh Mason Read the transcript here at: https://www.bravesea.com/blog/hugh-mason WhatsApp Daily Insight: https://chat.whatsapp.com/CeL3ywi7yOWFd8HTo6yzde Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu/featured Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464 Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau?lang=en Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau Visit our community at: https://www.bravesea.com
EP309: In this episode I share my experience of having my human design chart read by a human design expert from the School of Human Design. This is something I've been wanting to do for over a year and I finally just friggin' did it! If you're not familiar with human design, it is unlike anything I've ever encountered that helps individuals truly understand their authentic selves and know when they are not showing up as the person they were born to be. It also explains the areas where we are likely to be most inauthentic and susceptible to conditioning by others. I discovered my own human design a little over a year ago but only touched the surface with it, not understanding the many nuances about it because a chart is very complex. Think of it like the operating manual for your conscious and unconscious aspects of yourself and it really takes an expert in the field, to read and interpret the human design language for you. In this episode I share: The five human design types and why knowing your type is important information to have. How many centers a type has and what it means if a center is defined or undefined. How you can tell when you're not being your authentic self and examples from my reading. A big aha I got during my chart reading about how I've incorrectly been interpreting my feelings of excitement. If you'd like to find out your own human design, you can get a free copy of your chart at the International Human Design School site which has a ton of free information and is also where you can book a Foundational Analysis which is a reading with an IHDS Certified Professional. You may want to check out the official book on Human Design: The Definitive Book of Human Design, The Science of Differentiation by Ra Uru Hu which has detailed explanations that can help you understand your chart so it's a great first step before getting a reading. EP302: Today I'm sharing something I started one month ago today, on January 14th. (This was recorded on 2/12/23 but it's being published on 2/14/23.) This something has been on my To Do list for ELEVEN MONTHS but I've kept putting it off and putting it off. So of course that qualifies it for my "Just Friggin' Do it" episode for this month because I finally just friggin' did it!!! And it wasn't something I did once, it's something I've done for 30 consecutive days! Listen in to see what it is that I've done - it's actually TWO things that have contributed to the amazing way I feel - and as a result have lost almost 10 pounds. When you feel great, you have more energy, and when you have more energy, you feel younger so I can say that spending the last 30 days of my 63rd year focused on my health, was the best birthday present I could have given myself. And I refuse to revert back to the sluggish, feeling crappy, "average" grandma I had become. It creeps up on you slowly, as you repeat bad habits day after day, until one day you realize, holy crap, what has happened?! But that is behind me now! I've stopped a couple of bad habits and am on the right track. Thank goodness for my "Just Friggin' Do It" series because if it weren't for my commitment to you to show up with an example once a month, I might not be feeling this amazing. I'd probably still be procrastinating. So thank you! I hope this example inspires you to do something similar as you are approaching your next birthday, or any big milestone that will motivate you in a deeper way to show up as a healthier you. EP297: In this week's episode of Living Your Sparked Second Half, Christie Miller comes back on the show to talk about her cancer diagnosis which has given her even more clarity about her purpose path. Christie is a fun-loving, action-oriented, business mentor. She first shared her story in Episode 39 about the obstacles she faced with her family, her career transitions, and overcoming all of them to become the successful business owner she is today. But today, she shares the shocking news she received last June and the health journey she's walked since we last talked - something she describes as her biggest gift in life. In this episode, Christie talks about: How following her intuition, which came through a dream, led to her decision about her cancer treatment The stories of her visualizations coming true What she's learned about herself during the healing process and a new hobby she's begun. Her advice for workaholics Her winning mindset and visualizations have proven to be very effective. In fact, she tells the story in Episode 39 about how she's won THREE cars in her lifetime and uses powerful manifestation techniques to reach all her goals, including crushing cancer. EP292: I've invented this thing called a "Gwish" list and it's the first step in my 2023 planning process which I share in this episode. Gwish is a term meant to imply a combination of goals and wishes because sometimes we get so caught up in the goal-setting process that we don't realize some of our goals aren't aligned or may even conflict with our deep desires. In my experience, goals are more logic-based and dreams are more heart-based so I've found that this process, as you keep going and adding to the list, culls out more fun and exciting things you want to do that come from the heart instead of the brain. As your Gwish list grows, dreams you may have been suppressing or hadn't thought of until now start to appear. But the #1 rule is you need to pretend you are limitless, meaning you have no money restrictions, no family obligations, no fear, and all the time in the world. Play with it! Have fun!!! You'll also learn the other 3 things I did this past week besides my Gwish list as I was looking at what I want to attract into my life this year. These are all things I teach in the Second Half SPARK School and they work! They are all part of the manifestation process and how to express your desires to the universe. So now JUST go and FRIGGIN' DO IT!!! :) If you'd like to connect or reach out to ME, you can find me at: Email: lauriewright@notyouraveragegrandma.com Website: www.notyouraveragegrandma.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/LaurieColvinWright Instagram: www.instagram.com/not_your_average_grandma Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NotYourAverageGrandma Note: Not Your Average Grandma is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.
EP284: I was excited to bring you this episode where I talk about some non-conventional healing modalities that I've recently learned about - things that most western medicine doctors won't suggest or prescribe because, unfortunately, it's not what they're taught and it's not what pays their bills. I made this a part of my Just Friggin' Do It series because I finally got serious about my health after over 3 years of dealing with mysterious stomach issues that can't be explained by my primary care doctor, I was first pointed down this path by Christie Miller, a health coach, who I had on my podcast in June 2020 (See Episode 39). What's interesting is that even though Christie is a Health coach, she openly admits that she wasn't living a healthy lifestyle, and in early July found herself sitting in an oncologist's office being told she had an aggressive form of breast cancer. So Christie went into action-mode which was researching everything she could about cancer, the treatment protocol her doctor was recommending, and talking to cancer survivors. Then she decided she was going to document her journey and start a blog and that's what caught my eye... I saw her post a link to her blog on social media and I clicked through to read it out of curiosity. This is what I call a nudge from the universe. Nudges often begin with interest... something that's placed in front of you that makes you want to learn more. After I read through Christie's first 2 blog posts, I felt my intuition screaming at me to check out the things she was sharing. At that moment, I decided it was time to just friggin' do it... to make good health a top priority and begin the process to solve my long term stomach issues. So, in this episode, I'm sharing the things I've started doing to PREVENT cancer because I had a strong feeling after reading Christy's experience that I was headed down a similar path if I didn't make some serious lifestyle changes. My body has been sending me all the signals for 3+ years and I haven't been taking them seriously. I talk about: IV Ozone therapy, what it is and my experience with it. Juicing and the concoction I've been drinking every day for almost 2 weeks. The top anti-cancer supplements. Chris Wark, survivor of Stage 3c colon cancer and his Square One program. I'll be having Christie back on my podcast soon. She wants to share her story and I'm excited to give her this platform to do so. And like I said on the episode, if either you or a close friend or family member is struggling with cancer, it's YOUR journey to navigate and you must pick what works for you and allow your friend or family member to choose theirs. We must be supportive of each other and not try to force what we think is right on someone else. What I believe is most important is that we share information we come across that may be helpful so that people have the knowledge they need to make the best decision for them. So my hope is that this episode is both informative - that it makes you stop and think about your lifestyle and where it might be leading you - and that it provides someone, whether you or someone you love, with options that can really help. EP273: This month's “Just Friggin' Do It” episode was recorded right after my weekend with my college besties when I was still feeling so energized and filled up with love from being with people who get me like no one else. They are my soul sisters. I've known these women since the late 70s when we all met at Old Dominion University in Virginia. My connection with each of them was instant from the get-go, and although we've been through many ups and downs as we've navigated our different lives with spouses and raising children, we've managed to be better for it and love and understand each other on an even deeper level. In this episode, I share the 3 key things that these friends give to me and why I believe these things are what we should look for in the people we surround ourselves with. I hope you have your own soul sisters in your life, and if you do, when was the last time you saw them? If not recently, don't you think it's time to just friggin' do it? And if you're realizing you don't have friends like this, who lift you up and support and encourage you, then don't you think it's time to go friggin' find some?!?! It doesn't matter how old you are, new connections can come at any age. All you have to do is be open to receiving them! EP265: Today I'm sharing something that one of my students FINALLY just friggin' did... She bought her dream car!!! She first put it on her Vision Board in March of 2021 and now it's parked in her driveway giving her a little spark every time she sees it and especially when she gets to go out and drive it! In this episode I share why she almost put the purchase on hold and how what she did is so common for us to do. It might even be something you are doing right now with something that you desire. Listen in and hear how my probing questions led her to the aha moment she needed and the reason that was keeping her from taking the action she really wanted to take. Finding the answer that was inside of her all along was key because it allowed her to move forward, not stay stuck in inaction, and build the confidence she needed to know that she has all it takes to make her own decisions and go after the things she desires. And by now having this lived experience, she's inspired others with her example! In this fifth and final episode of the special IT Experts Podcast mini-series, we dive into the 36 powerful ideas and talk about finally taking all you learned into action to scale your MSP with confidence. These 36 powerful ideas to scale your MSP comes from a resource that we have where you can actually download right HERE and is spread out into the five key episodes in this mini-series. As usual, I briefly share with you what this mini-series is about, how it came together, how many episodes this consists of, and a recap of the previous episodes. In this episode of the series, we finally take all the lessons learned from the previous four episodes into ACTION and get results. Time to finally take your MSP through the 7-figure barrier. The first thing that you need to take into account is balance. It's important to make sure that you have got a balance in running your MSP. I share with you the analogy of the three-legged stool to help you understand why this is now the time to put some action. I also ask you the six powerful questions that I want you to spend a good 2-30 minutes on for you to fully have a think about and understand where your business is right now. I want you to write down these questions and answer them with your thoughts and initial response. On a scale of 1-10, how satisfied are you with how your IT/MSP is growing in line with the vision and hopes you had for it? Be honest with yourself. If scoring less than a nine or ten, what specifically about the business is causing you to feel this way? It may be more than one thing or area of the business… What is the consequence of not addressing what came up in 2)? If you could address what came up in 2) what difference would it make to your business and/or life? What one thing could you do that would allow you to start to address this? What would success look like if you fully addressed it? The second idea that is important in your action planning is to learn and understand the most important relationship ever. It's called cause and effect. The choices that you make cause and create effects in your life and in your business. Next is all about JFDI, like Nike! And the good old accountability. It's around going the right things in the right order at the right time. And this is what scaling your MSP is all about. I also tackle potential over performance. The achievement of real success comes from focusing on your potential with your business as well as your performance. Then I remind you of the importance of pausing and taking stock to get some perspective. It's always a good thing to clear all the clutter in your mind in order for you to move forward and work through your plan. JFDI with The Two Lauras | For Freelance Social Media Managers
The news is grim; whenever you turn it on, you're faced with more doom and gloom. Prices are increasing, and it feels harder to win clients. But the good news is that it is still totally possible to make money in an economic downturn if you know how. In this episode of JFDI with the two Lauras, we're sharing how to make money in an economic downturn, including: ➾ What you need to do to stop worrying about losing your clients. ➾ Who you should be working with and marketing to when the economy isn't doing well. ➾ Why you shouldn't lower your prices, even when times are tough. ➾ The two services you should add to your business to make more money in an economic downturn. ➾ You'll hear directly from the horse's mouth that savvy business owners are not cutting back on their marketing; quite the opposite.
EP256: This episode, as many are, was inspired by my own recent experience where I had a thought to send a card, but then I stalled on getting that nice gesture done. Do you do this too or am I the only oddball?!?! Fortunately I didn't stall too long, or worse, follow through at all! I GOT IT DONE! But as I thought about my experience and how often I actually DON'T act on these thoughts, I realized it was a perfect example of something that fits into the category of "just friggin do it!" Sending a thoughtful note seems like such a simple thing, a minor task that shouldn't take much time and means so much to the receiver, yet so many of us don't put that thought into action because we get caught up in our busy lives and bigger tasks that, in the end, probably don't matter as much! So my ask of you today is to FOLLOW THROUGH on that nice gesture you've thought of but may not have acted on yet... Get that card, take a few minutes to write that message you've been thinking about, and drop it in the mailbox! If you'd like to read about Christie Miller's cancer journey and why I felt compelled to send her a card, you can find her blog at: https://http://christiecrushedcancer.com/. And, if YOU get a thought to send her a card, do it! :) If you'd like to check out my episode with Christie, it's Finding True Purpose At Midlife, After Many Career Changes. EP250: In this episode I share something new that I've begun that I'm super excited about… I'm learning to play the ukulele! It's been quite the journey to get here but I've finally arrived and I'm committed, excited, and practicing daily. I've always wanted to learn to play an instrument but I told myself I didn't have any talent for it, that I was tone deaf and I have a terrible voice so somewhere along the way I just decided it was too hard because it didn't come naturally to me. All really silly reasons to not take action on something you desire to do - and what I've come to realize are just more of those limiting beliefs! Recognizing these limiting beliefs were preventing me from doing something that was really a deep desire, because it kept coming up in my head, was my first realization. Then I started to pay attention to the signs that began appearing… Signs that told me it's time to JUST FRIGGIN' DO IT! For me, the signs appeared in the following ways: One of my students shared that she began playing a ukulele and doing performances with a friend for the elderly in Assisted Living centers. A ukulele instructor recently joined my business coaching mastermind I've been in for 3 years. I decided to do this series, and as I was brainstorming ideas, playing the ukulele was one of the things that came to my mind. Another one of my students shared that she picked up a ukulele that had been sitting in the corner since her husband died 15 years ago and she just did a little mini-concert in our student community which just further inspired me. The funny thing is that I GAVE AWAY my ukulele I had purchased back in the fall of 2018 to my grandson. I took 1 local lesson and then NEVER PRACTICED! The difference this time is that I feel inspired, I have accountability, and I found a system that feels fun and doable. And I have a beautiful new ukulele that I love taking out of its case to play. (If you're in the market for a ukulele, check out the Concert Ukulele I ordered on Amazon. It comes with a tuner!) Listen in to this episode where I share not only my recent journey to finally just friggin' start playing the ukulele but my attempt at age 13 to teach myself how to play the piano and how that turned out. If you'd like to meet my teacher, listen to my interview with Matt Parkin, on Episode 240, which came out on July 12th, exactly ONE MONTH AGO! “What's the worst that can happen?” Jenn Sherman asked herself when she sent an email to John Foley, who was looking for people to join his new company called Peloton. She thought the last thing anyone in the youth-obsessed fitness industry would want was a 40-something mother of two. She and John hit it off instantly, and soon she became Peloton's original instructor. The Peloton community is equally drawn to her warm, approachable nature, and her willingness to show that she isn't perfect. The resulting fame has its challenges, but it's far outweighed by her blessings. Jenn never expected to have a second career. She simply fell in love with “spinning.” It combined her two competing obsessions: exercise and music. The rest was putting one foot in front of the other. She encourages anyone who feels stuck in life to JFDI (Just F***ing Do It). Living the life of your dreams is closer than you'd ever imagine, you just have to take a chance on yourself. Join Jenn and Lindsay in conversation to hear the difference between a big connection and a big following, living a life unexpectedly in the public eye, and Jenn's eternal love for Rob Lowe. Quotes • “I didn't have to create a brand, this was the brand: very into pop culture, music, all things happening in the world, very much like a talk show kind of vibe. That's kind of the personality that I am.” (31:03-31:24 | Jenn) • “The one piece of Peloton that I've gotten used to but I am still not comfortable with is this public piece, honestly. I've taken some missteps at Peloton. I've said the wrong thing or done the wrong thing– I'm human– and I was not prepared for the onslaught of what happens.” (34:40-35:11 | Jenn) • “I've just tried to keep some things for my family and not have everything be out there, but for the most part, this Peloton journey has brought me so many blessings that I don't even feel comfortable complaining.” (38:07-38:33 | Jenn) • “It's so meaningful to me to be able to show my kids that I could do this. At 40 years old, playing tennis and meeting my girlfriends for lunch just isn't cutting it anymore. I want to do something. What am I good at? What do I love? Let me do this. Let me give it a shot.” (40:13-40:31 | Jenn) Connect with Jenn Sherman: Jenn Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/pelotonjenn/ Peloton Instagram | http://www.intagram.com/onepeloton Peloton Website | https://www.onepeloton.com/ Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! EP237: In this month's episode of my "Just Friggin' Do It" series, I share a long-dreamed-about random act of kindness that finally came to fruition. You may wonder why it took me so long to do something so wonderful, and that is part of the reason I wanted to do this episode because it is the same question I've asked myself. If I can dissect what held me back, then perhaps my reflections will help you take action on something you've been thinking about but not taking action on… My curiosity about why it took me so long to do this random act of kindness led to the following questions and some answers, which I dive into in this episode: Why did I hold back on taking action on something that kept coming up, even if it was just a simple, random, act of kindness? Why were my feelings more important than the impact of my action? Why did I finally act? What made the difference? The feeling that I got from doing this was amazing and of course confirmed what I preach and teach: the magic is on the other side of our comfort zones. And that is the truth we all need to keep front and center whenever we procrastinate an idea that keeps coming up! So let me ask you, have you been stalling on an idea that keeps popping into your head, but you continue to push it away, find excuses not to do it, or talk yourself out of it for no good reason? Can you take a minute to imagine the rewards (aka magic) that action will bring? If that idea has again appeared in your consciousness as a result of hearing this episode, let this be your call to FINALLY Just Friggin' Do It!!! Side note (from mention in intro): Here's the past episode where I share my first midlife pivot that took place in late 2006: EP29: A Second Chance At Love 27 Years Later If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and subscribe to (or follow) the podcast (if you haven't already) so you don't miss any new episodes. EP229: In this month's episode of my "Just Friggin' Do It" series, I talk about the 4 biggest actions I took that led me closer to the life that I believe I came here to live as the most authentic version of myself. All of them came from my gut, meaning something deep inside of me pushed me to do them, while my brain was, in most cases, trying to talk me out of them. . These were actions I had never done and all of these life shifts have happened in the last 16 years of my life, after I finally, at age 47, admitted to myself that I was not living the life I wanted to. Looking back, I know my gut had been sending me signals of dissatisfaction in both my marriage and my career for a long time, but I ignored them. Then one day I found it more scary to keep living the life I was settling for than to start taking action and figure it out. Little did I know where it would lead! And little did I know that that confused, empty, unlit version of me was totally misaligned with my authentic self and the person I was supposed to be. Now in my 60s, I am finally living from the most authentic version of myself, listening to my gut, and using the gifts I didn't even know I had. The 4 biggest shifts that ultimately led me to finding the real me, that I share in this episode, are: Reconnecting with an old boyfriend (after years of denying that that love was still very much alive within me) Signing up for my first, high-priced online course (after pushing through the fear that it was way over what I could afford at the time) Finding and hiring a coach who has taught me so much about life and creating the business I never dreamed was possible. Learning my inborn personality and, in so doing, finding a mentor who helped me realize the gifts I was born with. And now, with the experience I've gained from this amazing journey to find myself, I get to help other people find out who they are so they can make the rest their best. It is an unbelievable treat that I will be eternally grateful I was able to discover! So let me ask you, are you acting on your gut instincts or are you letting logic (your brain) make all the decisions? And if the latter, are you feeling like the old me, dissatisfied, empty, and unlit about your life? If so, maybe it's time to lean in, let your gut lead the way, and just friggin' do it!!! In this Monday bitesize episode we draw inspiration from one of the women in the community on her fitness journey and the approach she took to help her with the lifestyle she wanted. She's a powerhouse and this phrase spoke a thousand things to me it was too good not to share. Some will resonate with this more than others.
EP221: Yep, this episode is a doozy!!! I'm really stepping out into woo woo land with this one! I go into a lot more of my backstory than I typically do in my episodes which, including the telling of this amazing experience, makes this one a bit longer than most. I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this appointment with a Medium. All I hoped for was that my mom would be able to connect with the love of her life and get something from it and boy oh boy did that happen in spades! This is an example of something that I wanted to do for a long time. I began thinking about it before I ever met Gail, the Medium. And as I said in the episode, I believe I attracted her into my life, and perhaps my dad had a hand in that. But however it happened, the desire of my mind was enough to bring the opportunity into existence, and for that I'm immensely grateful. It was an experience of a lifetime. It will be hard to match it. It was unbelievable that I actually got to communicate with my loved one who is no longer physically here. And for any skeptic out there, I know it was him because his personality came through exactly how he was. It was uncanny. And I was able to get questions answered and the thoughts I've had about my mother's situation and how he would feel about it were validated. So I finally JUST FRIGGIN' DID IT! I took this thought of mine and put it into action. It was a crazy thought, a scary action (for many reasons), and it was so easy to keep putting off, once I met Gail and knew she could make this happen for me. And now it's become one of the most magical experiences of my life. How about that?!!! So let my example be an inspiration to you to just go out and JUST FRIGGIN' DO IT!!! Take action on it today! EP213: Even though this episode may be about a topic you have no interest in, think about how it may apply in other areas of your life where you are resisting doing something that keeps coming up, either from conversations you're having or internal thoughts that keep arising. Often resistance is just our ego pushing something away because that thing is outside of our comfort zone. Pay attention to the resistance. It's often fear in disguise. And once you overcome the resistance, magic happens. I'm having SO.MUCH.FUN doing Reels. Check them out if you're on Instagram and let me know what you think! It's so crazy how I used to think how uncreative I was, and now, I'm having such a blast thinking up ideas for funny videos that I hope people make people smile, as well as stop and think! What have you been resisting? Is it Reels? Or is it some other kind of technology? What is it that you are making up silly stories about in your head, like I did, that really aren't true? The truth is that you won't know until you just friggin' do it!!! Here's the TEDx talk that I mentioned: "The Magic of Words - What We Speak Is What We Create" by Andrew Bennett It's soooo good! Robin, where are you hanging out? Robin Waite 00:24 I'm down in the southwest of the UK, England. So, if you can imagine a chocolate box or biscuit, 10 of like, what England is like, I'm in the middle of England in the Cotswolds. It's lovely here! Rolling hills. Tom Poland 00:34 Yeah, I've only had beautiful things about the Cotswolds. So, Robin's on top, I'm down under. What we're going to do is rock and roll here. We've got a terrific little interview around, not underselling yourself, which is a plague upon humanity, and probably has been for 1000s of years. And with Robin's help, we'll put a bit of a dent in that in a moment. But for those of you who don't know him, apart from being one of Britain's best chocolate biscuits, he is a dedicated husband and father, a multiple, best-selling author. He's also the Founder of Fearless Business Accelerator. And I just love the theme, Robin, that you bring through, which is around stepping up and stepping into destiny and backing yourself. You'll say this a lot better than I could, so we'll get on with the interview. The title is, “How to Stop Underselling Yourself”. Robin, our seven minutes, sir, start now. Question number one, who is your ideal client? Robin Waite 00:37 So ideal client is coaches, consultants, and freelancers who are typically selling time for money, either hourly rates or day rates. Tom Poland 1:26 Perfect! Question two, sir. What's the problem you solve for them? Robin Waite 01:32 Essentially, what we do is we help them to get out of selling time for money. So, stop selling by the session or by the hour and package up whatever it is that they do, and then get them very heavily focused on the results or outcomes which they deliver. So rather than selling features, we get them to focus on the remarkable outcome that they deliver for their clients. And generally speaking, when they manage to do that, and they can articulate their value a bit better, they can double, triple, quadruple their price. We've even had somebody go out there and 10x their prices. Tom Poland 02:06 Wow! Robin Waite 02:06 So, you can, it's one of the fastest ways to grow a business. If you can get to grips with packaging up your services, and then confidently charging a bit more for it. Tom Poland 02:14 Music to many coaches' ears and consultants, I'm sure! Six minutes left, sir. Tell us about some of the typical symptoms that your ideal clients are experiencing prior to working with you. What's going on in their life or their business that would kind of give the listener a heads up that they should be listening even harder? Robin Waite 02:31 Yeah, well, that's the obvious stuff. So, generally speaking, they're very intelligent people. They get amazing results for their clients already, but what they haven't figured out is, you know, they get to the end of the month, and I'm scratching my head and going well, “Where's all the money? I've done all this work this month.” So, things that typically happen with our coaches and consultants is they'll work out how much money they want to earn on an annual basis. And then they will divide it by 2000 hours, which is the typical number of hours that you can work in a year, so about 160 hours a month. And the challenge with that, though, is that- well, there are several challenges with that. So, the first one is that they haven't taken into account the fact that they've also got to do marketing, admin, sales, and all of the other good stuff that comes around running a business, instead of just client fulfillment. And so inevitably, what that means is their kind of working about 40 or 50 hours worth of, you know, deliverable work to a client, charging out at, say, 50 bucks an hour. And then that means that they've inadvertently gone and limited their earnings potential. So, one of the ways that we have to look at it is, first of all, it's just a process of working out the economics of a running small business. So, let's just say, for example, a business owner wants to earn $100,000 a year, okay? And what we might do is we'd say, “Okay, well, you know, how are you currently charging?” And they might say, “50 bucks an hour.” Okay, cool. So that means that you need to sell somewhere on the order of, you know, 4000 hours this year in order to earn $100,000. And then they start going, “Well, that's just a ridiculous number. I couldn't possibly sell that many hours.” So, we can already see that supply and demand is just a bit sort of out of kilter. And the second mistake, which we see people making, biggest mistake, or symptom, which we see people making is they're just a bit burnt out, really. You know, they're doing all of this great work, and they feel just, you know, unjustly unrewarded for it so, or justly- you know what I mean? Not justly rewarded for it. Tom Poland 03:11 Indeed. And it is unjust. Robin Waite 04:13 There we go! And so eventually, just their energy levels start to deplete. They get, you know, this thing which they started off doing, that they're sure incredibly passionate about. A couple of years down the line, they're starting to lose their passion for it, which obviously creates this sort of vicious cycle, if you like, of, you know- just really, it just breaks business owners. And, you know, the thing is, like, I've done corporate, by the way, in terms of like from a coaching perspective. And for me, I love the impact that small business owners make. So, getting one-man bands, you know, into creating highly profitable businesses really fills me up with joy because you can see the immediate impact when they get pricing. Tom Poland 04:59 Perfect! Thank you, sir. Let's get to question five, a top tip, a valuable free action. We've got this cultural consultant who feels a bit trapped with the time for money, wants to break out of that, needs to shift to a more benefit-orientated value proposition, looks at pricing, etc. How could they get started on this? What's the top tip you can give them that's really going to take them a step forward, might not solve the whole issue, but it might take them a step in the right direction? Robin Waite 05:24 Yeah, so the typical way people price sort of services is they look at their competitors. And they assume that their competitor- well, the mistake is assuming that their competitors know what they're talking about. The reality is like, there are three ways to price a product– you can either be the cheapest in the market, the middle of the road, or the most expensive. So cheap is the way people choose because they think that's the way to acquire clients. But the reality is if you're copying somebody else's business model, and they're cheap, it means that they're probably not very profitable. Why would you copy a broken business model? It doesn't make sense. So, you've got to rethink the way that we charge, you know, for products or services. So, the other option is you go middle of the road, which is what everybody else is doing. So, it doesn't really differentiate you in some aspects. And then the third option is, well, you could be the most expensive in the marketplace, but there are actually some clues here. The reason people don't choose to be the most expensive is that they believe it'll put people off buying their products or services. But the reality is, in every industry, there's somebody out there who is the most expensive, and the clues are, they've got the most reviews. They've been around the block a bit. They've got enough clients, and they're still able to make, you know, healthy profit margin because they're the most expensive, and they're still able to acquire clients. So, when it comes to actually like productizing service, how do we get out of these hourly rates that are trapped. There are three levers at work, which we have to bear in mind, so this is- Tom Poland 06:37 Real quick because we've got 90 seconds left, and still two questions to go. Robin Waite 06:40 That's cool. No, I'm on it. Don't worry. We can do this! So, the three things we've got to do when we productize a service. Number one, we need to focus on the remarkable outcome or result we're going to deliver for our client, okay? So, you need to go to articulate that. The second thing that needs to be delivered over a fixed period of time. So, say three months, six months, 12 months, however long it is. And the third thing for a fixed fee. And if you can nail those three things, you've managed to successfully productize your service and you can charge more for it. Tom Poland 07:07 So, define the transformational benefit, articulate that, set a period of time for the transformation to occur, and then set the price based on that value within that time frame. Perfect! Thank you, sir. Robin Waite 07:18 Articulated it better than I! Tom Poland 07:20 Not sure I did, better in my mind. 35 seconds left, one valuable free resource. I'm going to say this for the sake of time. Fearless, as in no fear, fearless.biz/tys. Real quick, what will people find there, Robin? Robin Waite 07:34 Yeah, they're going to find a free download of “Take Your Shot”. Or if there's a bit of ethical bribery in there and maybe some beer tokens, then I may even sign a copy and paste it wherever you are in the world as well. So, a free copy of the book, Take Your Shot. Tom Poland 07:45 12 seconds left. What's the one question I should have asked you? Real quick. Robin Waite 07:49 The one question you should have asked me. Oh gosh, we're only going to get six seconds. What's the one piece of advice that I would have listened to if I'd listened to myself years ago? And the answer to that is JFDI. If you're thinking about putting a price up, if you're thinking about starting a business, just effing do it. Life's too short. Tom Poland 08:05 If you're thinking about it, do it. That is such wise advice. And you'll tap into a whole string of intuitive consciousness in doing that, folks. Robin Waite, thank you so much for your time and over-delivering. Even if we did go but over time, it was well worth it. Thank you. Robin Waite 08:18 It's my pleasure. Thanks, Tom. Tom Poland 08:21 Thanks for checking out our Marketing The Invisible podcast. • I noticed this about my personality, is that, maybe you can relate... I set a goal, set an intention, I do my morning mindset, I really feel into it, and then you know when that goal comes to fruition, when I'm experiencing that goal, I'm on to the next goal. And while that's good, I'm always setting goals and I'm excited to see what shows up and manifest new things, and I'm excited about manifesting my goals, but I've noticed this about me and maybe with age comes more wisdom, but you know... But throughout a lot of my life, I haven't really taken the time to sit and appreciate what is already manifested, to really give thanks and really step into appreciation, and I've been really working on doing that a lot, a lot more than I ever have before. (5:33)• Or constantly be in this creation mode, I guess, and just leaning back even more and more and more and of course, as we know from the Mindset Chick podcast, the more you lean back, the more you take your hands off the wheel, the more that God, the Universe can guide you and bring you the right people and things that match your desires. Really that's how it works. So the more control we have and the more we're in a kind of I gotta do this, I gotta do that, I can do this. Even the manic manifesting like, Oh, I got to manifest. That kind of energy is going to limit your results. (7:26)• I just decided I'm going to be in silence, and I really appreciated the silence, and in that silence, I was driving, just thinking about all the things that have already happened in my life, all the things that I once desired to manifest. I was driving my Cadillac, and as a lot of you guys know, I manifested this Cadillac through the beauty business that I do. And so I'm driving my Cadillac Escalade, and I'm just thinking about the time when I was dreaming about driving this car, now I'm driving this car. I was thinking about dreaming about starting a podcast, and now I have a podcast. I was nervous to put myself out there, but like JFDI. Just freaking do it. Kristi did it. I was dreaming about having a very successful business where I could help inspire, mentor, coach and support people to be the best version of themselves, have a freedom-based lifestyle, moved to a home with a pool... All these things that have already happened, and I don't know if I've really taken that time to just sit and appreciate all those things. (8:51)• You can work through that, but if you're feeling like, Man, I'm feeling like this thing that I desire to manifest isn't showing up in time or not showing up the way that it should be, then you can come back and just take a little break and look at it from a different perspective and say, Okay. Well, what is showing up for me? What is coming into my life? What are the blessings that I already have? You know what's already there? In my beauty business... We have customers and we have business partners, and I coach a lot of my team, and when they say, I'm really working on this goal, this income goal or this business goal, and I feel like it's not showing up is not showing up. We go back to counting all of the customers, all the business partners, all the sales, all the income that they've already made in the business that they've already manifested, and it really shows them... They realize, Wow, I do have so many things to be grateful for. (12:17)• That story is beautiful, and it's just a symbol of what we can do in our own lives when we bless things, when we give things, when we have gratitude. When we sit in awe and appreciate everything we already have instead of running to the next thing and running to the next thing and running to the next thing, but just really even taking a moment, taking a day, taking a week, taking some time, and just sitting in appreciation. Sometimes people think, Well, gosh, I'm just sitting in appreciation, I need to be doing... Doing doing, I need to keep going. Yes, activity is great, but sometimes just being and staying in a state of appreciation is also doing... You're just doing it in a different way. You're doing it with your mindset way, when you're in a state of appreciation and gratitude, you're allowing great things to flow to you, you're just doing it with less effort. • You know how I feel about failure, I've talked about that on my podcast, about I don't feel like you really fail, it's just perception. But whatever that that looks like, however you want to label it, you know that failure or that past struggle or expectation that didn't go, well, that was a learning process. So it's like jumping in and maybe you don't do it, you didn't do it exactly how you wanted to, but you learn from it, you grow, and then you find new ways, and then you keep going and you keep going and you keep showing up. That consistency will actually help you to feel more confident. (3:40)• Having that routine, going to the gym or whatever, and you have that goal. It doesn't happen overnight, it's that consistency, it's creating those habits, creating those new thinking habits, it's creating those new physical habits where you're showing up. I talked about it last week, showing up for the job that you want, not the job you have. And it becomes a habit, and that can totally change everything for you in your life, and will allow your goals to manifest. (5:45)• And you know, I was thinking too, it's like baby steps. I think sometimes we have these goals, these desires, we think, Oh wow, I've gotta go from A to Z. But, just like baby steps and just taking one little step every day towards your goals, getting in that habit, it doesn't have to be this huge step. And then appreciating those. Start saying, Wow, look, I showed up today, I got out of bed, I did my gratitude, I did my morning mindset, I dressed for the job that I want and I spoke kindly to myself today. Those are amazing things to be proud of yourself and congratulate yourself, and be like, every day, I'm getting closer and closer to my goal. That's my mantra, every day I'm getting closer and closer to my goals and just appreciating that... Appreciating even the baby steps. (11:57)• It was pretty amazing actually. And I think that a lot of times, all the steps that you're taking, like what we talked about, lead you up to your big moment, right? And I prayed about it, it was one night I was on my bike ride and I prayed about having a divine direct intervention kind of thing, like a divine direct message to point me in the right direction of where my heart was kinda telling me where to go. (14:23)• When we have those limiting beliefs, when we tell ourselves the old stories you like to talk about on your podcast, then yeah, when you don't really go for what's in your heart and what you really should do, no matter what you're feeling. You lose out on that opportunity and the world loses out on what you have to offer and say. Anyway, that was the story and I jumped. I love that you jumped and you continue to jump despite the fear, and I can resonate with that, and I'm sure you can too listening, despite that fear, just jumping and saying, Yeah, I love that. When you're like, Victoria, if I have this much fear, if you have this much fear, then there's something, then you're meant to do this, there's something so big and great on that other side, you don't have to be attached to the fear of the story, it doesn't have to be you, you can release that, you can jump into a more empowering story. Making Conversations Count: Honest, relatable conversations with business leaders
Making conversations about copywriting count! Joining Wendy in this episode is copywriter James Daniel. He describes himself as ‘That old guy who writes copy – you know, the beardy one with glasses.' We should point out there could be other old guys with beards and glasses out there! It's easy to like James style of writing because he's a conversationalist who realises that people don't speak geek or tech. He doesn't talk jargon when he explains great copy. Talking with James' about his pivotal moment peels back some interesting layers that some would shy away from... Today in the studio, I am joined with James Daniel. He is EarthMonkey Media and does copywriting. So, James, it's good to have you here. Tell everybody how we met. James Daniel: Thanks, Wendy, it's great to be here, thank you. The first sort of contact that we had, I think, was via LinkedIn, wasn't it? You'd been reading some emails that I send out every week with copywriting tips and marketing ideas, and I heard from you and I know you were particularly taken with one email that had some totally bizarre suggestions about a hippopotamus, I think, wasn't it? Wendy Harris: Yes, I remember that clearly! It certainly made me read the email when I saw hippopotamus in the text, which meant I had to reach out. I actually thought, that's really clever, since I post generally on a weekly basis about hippos somewhere along the line; I squeeze my love of hippopotamuses in for everybody to share with me and I thought you'd written it especially for me. James Daniel: I had, yeah! No, it's a funny thing, that injecting a little bit of humour and some vague stuff that doesn't really seem to naturally fit with business, it just gets people reading, so you draw them into your content. That's how I like to write emails. But, yeah, that was our first contact of course and since then, we've just been chatting and thought it would be a good idea to have this talk about how I sort of got to where I'm at now in my copywriting career. Wendy Harris: It's purely that conversational style over that email. I'd seen some of your posts, which is why I'd subscribed in the first place, because I thought, here's somebody who really gets it, who understands that having a conversation through copy is the way to build relationships; so, I subscribed and I've just been a lurker of those emails really. When that one was just for me, I know because it said something about hippos, I'm going to take it that it was just for me, I just had to reach out because that is what copy is meant to do; it's supposed to speak to people. James Daniel: Yeah, it's the power of conversation. My first book that I wrote is called, "Do you talk like that at home", and it's based on a conversation that I had with somebody once. This is not what I want to talk about with you -- Wendy Harris: This is not your pivotal moment? James Daniel: No, this is not, no! Wendy Harris: But, interesting about a conversation. James Daniel: Yes. Somebody at work who was talking, we used to spout all sorts of corporate garbage and we were talking about a process or other that was going on, something that needed to change, and he said to me, "Yes, I endorse that". And I said to him, "Look, I've got to ask you, do you talk like that at home? If your mum says to you, 'Do you want spaghetti hoops for tea?' do you say, 'I endorse that', or do you say, 'Yum, that sounds good to me, mum'; which is it?" It's conversation. We're not robotic machines, we're human beings. We talk like this in natural sort of warm, human language, as if you're sat in a coffee shop with your friends; not writing a letter to the Bank Manager. And, that's an obsession of mine, is that conversation is key to everything. As soon as you can make people feel that you are talking to them one to one, exactly as we're doing here, exactly as your whole podcast is about, then you instantly build bridges; you build a relationship, a connection with them. It's based on, I say, that human, that sort of warm touch and it's incredibly powerful. What you say is every bit as important as how you say it. Wendy Harris: That must be the common thread through everything you do, through running a business and helping your clients with what you do in business as well? James Daniel: Absolutely, yeah. I mean, I've sold everything from hearing aids and mattresses to skin care treatments and an industrial safety harness, you know. Wendy Harris: I'm glad you said that, because I was waiting for you to say, "Snow to Eskimos". James Daniel: Oh, no. Wendy Harris: And, "Sand to camels". James Daniel: No. If you try to sell snow to, it's an Inuit, isn't it now? If you try to sell snow to somebody who's surrounded by snow, then you don't understand sales. You should be looking to try to sell elsewhere. I've worked in this wide range of industries but, whoever is reading your copy, whatever sort of hat they happen to be wearing that day, as a consumer, as a business buyer, they're still a human being. You might alter the tone of your conversation a little, just the same as I might talk to my best friend in one way and, say, my auntie in another way, or something, and client in another; you'd alter that. But, it's still conversation so it still needs to be the natural voice that you would adopt in that conversational environment, rather than thinking, oh, I'm writing now so it needs to be something different, like when they did English essays in school. Wendy Harris: I understand completely; that tonality. When you have to put your posh voice on, because you pick up the phone and you need to say this … My best friend, when I ring her, she answers the phone, "Yes, hello?" James Daniel: Like Hyacinth Bucket? Wendy Harris: Yes! So, it's just a standing joke now that when she rings me, I answer the phone, "Yes, hello?" and it's meant to be off-putting to the person if they're trying to sell something, or get something, because they don't really know you; that puts them off. But, it's still that conversation, isn't it? If I was to just say, "Yeah, hello?" it's a bit more inviting. James Daniel: It's having less pretence, really. We're human beings. Whatever your religious stance, we're basically all shaved monkeys underneath. We take ourselves too seriously and if you recognise that whoever you're talking to, we're mostly a meritocracy these days, whoever you're talking to, they're no better, no worse than you are; they don't deserve reverence; they deserve just basically politeness and curtesy. You talk to them just one to one, just the same as you would talk to anybody; that's so effective. Wendy Harris: I think you've just conjured up the phrase to me that we come into the world and go out of the world in exactly the same way as each other, and it's just what happens in between that makes us different. I'm going to have to look up that word that you just said. James Daniel: Meritocracy? Wendy Harris: Meritocracy; I'm going to have to look that up. That's not a word I've come up against, so well done the copywriter. James Daniel: Well, no, that's a cardinal sin for copywriters actually to use a word that somebody doesn't know, because you've failed in your job then! Wendy Harris: Listeners, send in your comments; what's your interpretation? James Daniel: By meritocracy, I mean that we get where we get on merit, rather than through advancement that isn't naturally due to us. Obviously, there are big conversations going on around the extent to which we have a meritocracy even today. But, I don't think anyone would deny that we're far closer to meritocracy now than we were, say, 100 years ago, 200 years ago; we're certainly edging in that direction. My point in that really is that the days of having to treat people with reverence because of status that they were born into, I think is long gone. Wendy Harris: Do you think that that's a little bit like, "Do you know who I am?" James Daniel: Yes. Wendy Harris: Yes, it's that, isn't it? James Daniel: Yes, it's entirely that. Yes, I do. You're a human exactly the same as I am. Wendy Harris: You're somebody that I've been talking and chatting to over time and is successful, however you measure that, to the point that I can't now actually get anywhere near to have a conversation, and you just go, "Well, you're still the same person"? James Daniel: Exactly that, yes. Wendy Harris: Interesting that this should come out today. So, James, conversation clearly is something that matters an awful lot to you? I think you could probably adopt my strapline of "Making Conversations Count", in all the things that you do in your copy. Every guest that comes on, I ask them to share one pivotal moment for the listeners; so, now's your big moment? James Daniel: Do you know, I struggled with this, because I narrowed it down to about two or three. So, there is one that is absolutely pivotal that I will share with you, but it was painful to sort of whittle down the list; I can tell you that. Wendy Harris: You're not on your own! James Daniel: So, you're kind of like, do you remember Roy Plomley from Desert Island Discs? He would say, "You can have one luxury and that's it", and he would be really vicious about it. Wendy Harris: Yeah, it is hard, isn't it? It's hard to think of that one thing. James Daniel: It really is. But, the one I've settled on is a conversation that I had back when I worked in the corporate world with the MD of the Welsh region where I was working. So, I live in Cardiff and I was working in the cable industry. I'll give you a little bit of background before I get to this. So basically, I've been a writer for 32 years now, between journalism and writing for radio, TV, children's books, etc. And writing, particularly in the early days, doesn't pay especially way. As you become more established, you can make a living but through those early days, really you can make a part-time income at best. When I got married, I was working as a journalist and decided, no, this isn't working for me; I'm not particularly enjoying it; the money's terrible. So, I decided to take a sales job just to make some decent money and I could focus on my writing work in my spare time. I was trying to break into writing more for TV, that sort of thing. So, I did that in the cable industry and I spent two years working door to door, just knocking on doors, saying that, "We've brought the cable network into your area; let me tell you about what we can do with your phone and your TV, etc". Wendy Harris: It's a tough job. James Daniel: It is, yeah. I mean, in good weather, when you're going into a new area where everybody wants it, it's fantastic; but, when you're in an area that's already been marketed several times before and it's raining and it's dark and it's cold, that's a hard slog, you know. But, surprisingly, I was doing quite well with this, because I'd never seen myself as a salesman at all, but I am good at tailoring solutions for people. But, anyway, I digress. So, I'd been thinking a lot during this time around how we can improve the business, and one thing that really occurred to me was, when we were going into these new areas, we were sometimes the enemy, because the engineers had been in to put the network into the streets; they'd dug up the streets; they'd made a bit of a mess; there'd been a lot of upheaval. And then, we were coming in to say, "Okay, now can we sell you something?" So, it occurred to me that what we should be doing is building ties with the community before we begin the sales process. And, we had a community TV channel at the time, called On TV. So, it seemed to me that we could use that channel to strengthen ties, and it could be as simple as, we're going into this area so let's go to the local high school and see if we can film their school's sports day, or their school play, or something like that; or, some kind of event that's happening in the heart of the community. Then, first of all, we build up good vibes with these people and secondly, we're actually putting something on the channel that they could only get through the cable network, so we were also giving a reason to take the service. Wendy Harris: Reason to switch on, yeah. James Daniel: And, I think the intangible good will is the more powerful aspect of that, but you know. So, it just occurred to me that would be a good thing to do. And, by this time, after two years of selling, I was also thinking, wouldn't it be great if they could give me a job running that channel locally. Wendy Harris: Just a quick question though, James; was it VHS then? Could they record the channel onto a video cassette? We're going to blow some people's minds with that. James Daniel: Well this was back in the late 1990s, so it was probably all still done on Betamax or steam, or something like that; I'm not sure. No, it was still the VHS days. So, I put a proposal together. Now, our MD, Terry, still is the most amazing leader that I have ever known. He was incredible and he had 600-odd people working there for him and any one of them would have walked through fire for him. He didn't bully his way through business; he just inspired. He had an open-door policy. I walked up to him one day when he'd given a talk to the sales team and said, "Could I make a time to come and see you; I've got a couple of things I'd like to discuss with you?" He said, "Yeah, brilliant, absolutely". And I took this proposal to him. He loved the idea, but more than anything I think he loved the way of thinking. So he said, "Look, I don't think that we'd be able to get a budget to do something like this, as much as I like it, but I really like what you're thinking of here and I like the way you're approaching the issue; that you've identified a problem and come with a very detailed solution to it. Everything's fully costed and loads of programming ideas". He said, "Leave it with me". Ten days later, I was called in to see my immediate boss, who was the Sales Director, who said to me, "Okay, so we want you to go onto a three-month secondment to our Head Office in Farnborough. Like I said, I'm in Cardiff; Farnborough is two to two-and-a-half hours away. It's a long commute, as I found out, because I spent eventually seven months driving back and forth from Cardiff every day; that was fun. I got to know every pothole on the M4. He said, "Look, we've got you this secondment", and it was Terry, the MD, who'd had this chat with my boss and said, "Okay, let's keep an eye out for opportunity". As it happened, we had a new Marketing Director in corporate, who decided that the marketing team's approach there was all a bit ivory tower, and they wanted somebody from the ground level, who could come in and give a different perspective. Wendy Harris: What you're faced with when you knock the door? James Daniel: Exactly, yeah, rather than keeping things abstract and clever and witty, as corporate marketing often does. So, there were about 1,000 advisors around the country, you know, sales advisors, so to be picked out of that, I'll be honest with you, it was very fortunate; the timing of knocking on his door and saying, "Here's a proposal" just when that opportunity was about to come up. I was very, very fortunate with the timing there. But, the result was I got the three-month secondment. At the end of that, they actually gave me a job as a National Project Marketing Manager, so I was on a different career path. After about four months there, I was moved back down to Cardiff, thankfully, and it eventually became sort of Business Development Manager, eventually covering half of the UK network as the company grew. We took on acquisitions, other cable companies, so eventually I was managing half the network across Belfast and Glasgow, and across the north of England, all from that one conversation. So, it's thanks to that conversation that I have the house that I live in today and that I started to learn so much more about the marketing and the business development process. It's just from having the initiative really and recognising that opportunities do not land in your lap, as such; you've got to go out and make them. And, I acknowledge that I was fortunate to an extent in this, but it's only because I made something happen in the first place. Wendy Harris: Yeah, initiative's a good word, I think, James, because a lot of people don't probably value the initiative that is needed. And, on the face of it, that idea that you had that you went in with didn't happen, so it doesn't matter how good the idea is, it's just the start or seed of an idea that grew into something else. James Daniel: Yeah. Wendy Harris: It's a bit like planting something and not knowing whether you're going to get tomatoes, potatoes or onions. It really doesn't matter what it is that's going to grow, it's the fact that you've put yourself out there to say, whatever happens, I'm your girl, or I'm your man, or whatever? James Daniel: Yeah. It's sowing seeds, it's making connections, it's showing people what you can do, rather than hoping that they're going to sort of say, "Right, who wants to do this?" because, if that had have just been put out right across the country, then I would have been one of hundreds and hundreds of people putting myself forward for it. But, yeah, I think there is a good lesson for anybody in a career or in business which is, you've got to knock down your own doors; knock down the barriers yourself and pick what you want and start having those conversations. Wendy Harris: The standout for me is you said that you left a journalist job and went into sales. I bet it wasn't half what you thought it was going to be and it was hard work to get even near the money that you wanted? James Daniel: I mean, in my first month in sales, I earned three times what I'd earned as a journalist, and it was only about 20% as stressful. Wendy Harris: Really? James Daniel: Yeah, absolutely. I hated my life as a journalist, so that would be one of the reasons; but also, the money was just so much better. It was a relatively easy product for me just because I'm a lifelong telly addict and I just like talking about it. Wendy Harris: There's not many people that would say, "Hands up", at school, "I'm going to be in sales". You would say, "I'm going to be a journalist". But, take the money aside from all of that, it's interesting that the skills that you had as a journalist have actually helped you shape into this new career path as well. So, don't ever underestimate the skills that you've got. James Daniel: Oh, no, not at all. In fact, that was the thing that made it work, because when I began the secondment, the first thing they asked me to do was to find out why customers were leaving, so it was a project. Why are they leaving us, either by disconnecting or by running up a bill so that we switched them off? I said, "Well, okay, I'm completely new to the business environment here. The only thing that I have that I can apply is my journalist skills. So, if I treat this as an investigation, I can do it and I can report everything back to you". Wendy Harris: Was it what they thought, or was there another reason? James Daniel: There were different people dotted around the country who had different theories and it was my job to travel around the country and talk to everybody and compile their theories on what it was, and then look at the data and see how that aligned to the different theories and try and make some rational sense of the whole thing. Like I say, it was a completely new kind of fact-finding exercise for me; nothing I was used to at all. I'd never even used PowerPoint at the time and had to put it all into a presentation. Yeah, it seemed to make a different, because then the senior managers had me travelling all around the country again delivering the presentation and delivering recommendations off the back of it. So, it was very much to do with the journalism side. And of course, when I left that job after nine years, everything I'd done previously in journalism married with all the stuff that I'd been doing in that job really to take me into the next part of my career. In fact, this was the other conversation I was going to try and sneak in. Wendy Harris: Go on then, James! James Daniel: The second most influential conversation is one that I had with a recruiter not long after I left the cable industry. He looked at my CV; I was about 36 at the time. He looked at my CV and said, "It looks to me like I'm talking to two 30-year-olds, because I don't know what you are. Are you a writer, a creative person?" By this time, I'd had a few TV shows on as well. He said, "Are you this creative person, or are you a sales, marketing and business development person?" That really hit home, because of course I'd had very little sense of direction in my career. I'd just been, I like writing, I'm good at writing, this is what I'm going to do, and I was just drifting. This was where I finally settled on becoming a copywriter. But, it's the only thing that makes sense of that diverse background that I'd almost fallen into. Most copywriters come to it as a second career. It's not a good first career; you need experience in either sales or journalism or marketing, and I'd managed to pick up experience in all three. Wendy Harris: A golden shape? James Daniel: Yeah, exactly. So, I decided to retrain, add qualifications and then start the business. But, that second conversation there was all about, okay look, choose a direction now, use what you've done, focus, move forward. So, that was also pivotal. Wendy Harris: Yes. Well I would agree with why you would choose that as a backup to everything that you've done. Certainly, with the way the conversation has gone now, is that you've laid all your skills out, but everybody's encouraged to do that, aren't they? Put everything down, put everything out there, tell them what you can do. But, if that then leaves you with a confused picture and you can't tell the story in your head about how to then utilise those skills going forward, it was a great comment and remark for you to go, "Hmm, I hadn't realised I was giving that image off of myself"? James Daniel: Exactly. And now, when I tell my own story, if I'm meeting a client and they say, "Tell me about yourself", or if I'm writing a biography, I will very often start with that conversation with the recruiter; that critical moment. Wendy Harris: James, it's been a blast having you on the show. Thank you so much for sharing your story and your pivotal moment. James Daniel: Thank you. Wendy Harris: If people want to pick up the conversation with you, where can they find you? James Daniel: They could go to my website, which is jamesthecopywriter.co.uk and you can get a free copy of my latest book there which is called, "Before you JFDI". It's about, you know, everybody's telling you to just jump in and do something, anything; and I'm saying, well, look before you leap. A little bit of planning before you strap on a blindfold and say, "Okay, let's try this", will go a long way. Jamesthecopywriter.co.uk, NOT .com, because another copywriter called James beat me to that one by an hour to register that domain, so don't go to him! Wendy Harris: Oh, no! James Daniel: Don't go to him; it's .co.uk. Wendy Harris: But, you're on LinkedIn as well under jdcopywriter as well? James Daniel: That's right. Wendy Harris: We'll put all the links in the show notes. Thank you so much again, James. For the listeners, don't forget to send us your comments; we do reply to every one of them.
