In this episode with Dr. Jonathan Welch (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary), we discuss the legacy of the song story column in Worship Leader Magazine and what it can tell us about how worship songwriters imagine God's participation in the creative act. Welch encourages worship songwriters to know that God is present in the process, even if we aren't feeling some special divine anointing in the moment! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-worship-nerds/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-worship-nerds/support

Calvin Nowell's testimony about his struggles with weight produced one of the most vulnerable and powerful episodes of The Walk that we've ever released. We're so proud to put this out in honor of all of those who struggle with the weight of sin. It's time for us all to put that sin at the altar and move past it, one step at a time. His scripture reference of Hebrews 12 is such a powerful reminder that, like Jesus, we all need to choose to run the race with endurance and through repentence, prayer, and the support of others, we really can lay down our weight and RUN! He endured the cross for us to be able to set aside our sin. Praise the Lord.Hebrews 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.- - - - - -Sponsor InformationSong Discoveryhttps://www.songdiscovery.com/- - - - - -Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. This episode of The Walk features worship artist, songwriter, and worship leader Patrick Mayberry and his wisdom could apply to anyone leading a team in any setting. He brings a great combination of practical advice for those on worship teams, as well as some great inspiration based on 2 Corinthians 10.2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (ESV) For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…For those of us in leadership, having a grasp on the vision God has given you for your business, church, or ministry, and passing that vision along to your team can not only inspire, but it can motivate your team to pursue excellence in the practical applications of their giftings. The abilities that God has given us, when used for Kingdom purpose, destroys lies and attacks set against us in the spiritual relm that manifest in the physical realm. Use your “weapons” today, whether that be leading worship, doing taxes, or fixing cars, for God's glory and you'll see strongholds destroyed, in the mighty name of Jesus. - - - - - -Sponsor InformationWorship Leader Institutehttps://www.worshipleaderinstitute.com/coaching- - - - - -Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. Cookeville, Tennessee native Patrick Mayberry first fell in love with worship music at a Passion conference in 2006. Twelve years later the worship leader, singer, guitarist and songwriter signed his first publishing deal with Centricity Publishing (publishing home of Lauren Daigle, Jordan Feliz, Katy Nichole, etc.), and recorded and released his independent EP, Joy, followed by Live In My Living Room in 2019. Along with Centricity Publishing, Centricity Music (record label) caught the vision of Patrick's artistry and signed him as an artist as well, which led to the release of his EP Holy Spirit Come in 2021. The title track hit the Top 15 at Christian radio, and recently the Top 200 on CCLI's Top 2,000 US chart; and “Breakthrough Miracle Power” made a significant splash as well. This launched Patrick into his first two nationwide tours in 2022 - the Songs & Stories Tour with Cory Asbury and the My People Tour (along with Crowder, We The Kingdom, Anne Wilson and more). Mayberry is currently in the studio recording songs for his next project to be released in 2023.In addition to writing and recording his own music, Patrick has penned songs that have been recorded by Passion, Josh Baldwin, David Leonard, Chris Renzema, Mack Brock, Pat Barrett, North Point Worship, among others. He's also garnered sync placements with T-Mobile, NBA, the “TODAY” show and more. Mayberry, his wife Jenny, and their four children live in Franklin, Tennessee.
God is so good and so loving and we are blessed to be his children. In this episode of The Walk, Gatherhouse worship leader, pastor, and songwriter Ryan Kennedy talks us through the life-changing experience he had when he achieved his dream at 17 of getting a show produced Off-Broadway.At least, he thought it was his dream. So many of OUR dreams come from experience with what our culture tells us our dreams SHOULD be. There are few scriptures as powerful and as poignant as Galatians 2:20, which Ryan references in this episode.(ESV) I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.In our “me” culture, the idea of no longer having an identity that YOU control seems oppressive, but once you learn the truth of how good our God is and how much he loves us, it's easier and easier to live a life of faith in the Son of God. Ryan's testimony in this episode of The Walk is powerful and a great devotional to start off our year with. Let's all commit to walking away from “flesh” and running toward “faith” in 2023. Our God is good, all the time. In this episode Benjamin William Hastings asks the question, does God sometimes allow the storms to come? His question is linked to a journey through the streets of London during a literal storm, but the metaphor is relevant to us all. How many times have we cried out during a challenging season in life only to get to the other side and realize how much that season caused us to press in and build a deeper relationship with the Father?“The only way through it is to Hallelujah!” Is a lyric from Benjamin's song that he sings with Blessing Offor called That's The Thing About Praise. He couldn't be more right…we just need to praise our way through the storm, even when we don't feel like it's making a difference. Today we say, “Hallelujah,” for those that are struggling with illness. We say, “Hallelujah,” for those that got laid off. We say, “Hallelujah,” for those dealing with the pain from the loss of a loved one. On it goes until we are singing praises to our King no matter the storms we face. What Christian hasn't asked the question, “did I not pray hard enough?” One of my first questions for God when I get to heaven will be, “what took you so long!?” God's timing and our timing don't often align in the exact way we would wish. Given the expectation we have in our culture of faster is better, waiting on the Lord to answer while enduring any sort of pain or discomfort is not something that we usually handle well.Justin Warren, a recording artist and worship leader, talks us through a journey he went on that made him doubt his calling. He was challenged by God to press in and wait on the Lord for an answer. Through that process a beautiful new song was written and spiritual growth happened and he'll share his story with us on today's episode.- - - - - -Sponsor InformationWorship Leader Institutehttps://www.worshipleaderinstitute.com/- - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. There's no question that walking through something as painful as watching your child suffer will cause you to question your faith in God. Jordan St. Cyr, Canadian Worship Leader and artist, tells us about his daughter, Emory, and the health trials she's encountered since joining us here on this earth.Jordan's testimony is actually one of encouragement for all of us who have or are currently walking through a time of testing. He addresses that difficult time frame right between the blessing or miracle and when we're just believing in faith for that miracle. It's a beautiful place to exist, but it can cause us to fall away or draw closer to our Creator.Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”- - - - - - Sponsor InformationWorship Leader Institutehttps://www.worshipleaderinstitute.com/Additional Linkshttps://www.jordanstcyr.com/https://www.instagram.com/worshipleader/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/https://authenticmedia.company/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/our-host/- - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. It's so easy in our world of social media to fall into the comparison trap. Sarah Kroger, an accomplished worship songwriter and performer, gives a personal testimony of walking through that trap and stepping out into the freedom that comes when we embrace God's love. Her personal story will translate to all of us as no human has ever walked this earth and not had the thought that someone else has it better. We've all said, “I wish I were more like her/him,” or “I wish I had what they had,” or “My life isn't good enough without what they have.” But God says…Psalms 139 13-16For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.- - - - - -Sponsor InformationPlanning Centerhttps://www.planningcenter.com/Additional Linkshttps://www.sarahkroger.com/https://amzn.to/3EjBrra - The Life of the Belovedhttps://www.instagram.com/worshipleader/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/https://authenticmedia.company/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/our-host/- - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. In this episode of The Walk; a devotionals podcast led by worship leaders, Steven Fry addresses one of the most common side effects of full-time ministry. We enter with passion for the ministry, but in our human failure that passion turns those serving into slaves of the ministry instead of servants of the almighty God.Steve is a pastor, worship leader, artist, playwright, and author. In his 50 years in ministry he has served in almost every role you can imagine. His wisdom for how to stay focused on what's important, which is his personal relationship with Jesus, over what's tangible and feels important, the daily work of the ministry, has been the key to sustaining him for those 50+ years. He pulls from a story that isn't often preached and comes from Ezekiel 44 and surrounds the Levitical Priests called the Sons of Zadok. This episode is sure to challenge and encourage anyone, whether you serve in full-time ministry or not. In essence, we are all ministers in whatever role we fill our daily lives with, so listen and please respond with comments and shares. We would love to see this amazing message reach more and more people who are falling into the temptation of striving for the world instead of abiding with Jesus.- - - - - -Sponsor InformationPlanning Centerhttps://www.planningcenter.com/Additional Linkshttps://www.thegate.cc/https://Stevenfry.orghttps://amzn.to/3UOyCF4https://www.instagram.com/worshipleader/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/https://authenticmedia.company/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/our-host/Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. There are so many times we mistake “greatness” for something that we as humans do and achieve instead of realizing what it really is; the “anointing” of the Holy Spirit on someone operating within their God-given gifting. In this episode, Gospel artist, songwriter, worship leader, and co-writer and performer of Rapha, Jason Clayborn, tells a story of his first encounter with “greatness” and how he learned that those who carry a higher calling on their life and submit to the will and authority of Jesus are able to carry his presence in the form of a Holy Spirit anointing. Once we recognize that all Christians carry some form of this, how do we reconcile our differences and how does this calling on our lives draw us closer to Jesus, while also introducing others to Jesus through us? These questions and more are touched on in this exciting podcast episode from this seasoned artist and worship leader in Jason. We're thrilled to have him as a guest and we encourage you to comment below, review our podcast, subscribe to our show, and please share our content as we believe this show is “anointed” with the purpose of equipping and building up those on worship teams and who volunteer in churches all over the world. - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. We've all walked through experiences where we've been asked to do something that we didn't feel prepared for. Those situations often cause us to be stretched beyond what we believe we're capable of. The U.S. Navy SEALs have a saying: "Get comfortable being uncomfortable." Now, we're not all called to become Navy SEALs, but as followers of Jesus we are automatically members of the Lord's army. That means we're faced with embracing the uncomfortable situations of life that Jesus puts us in. In this episode, we travel back with Dustin Smith to his early days of ministry and learn about how he became a worship leader that could also play the piano. That led to an anointed career as a songwriter, musician, worship pastor, and now senior pastor at Hope UC in Nashville. Romans 3:23 (NKJV) says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” That includes Pastors and those in full time ministry. We are all sinners and constantly need salvation, grace, repentance, and realignment with the way of Jesus. Worship Leader, songwriter, and worship artist Stephen Mcwhirter has a story that may seem “extreme” to some of us, but to God is just another example of a lost sheep finding its way back home to the Father. It started with abuse, which led to a lifestyle of seeking to escape the pain of that abuse, then to radical salvation, and to an even more radical transformation. This episode is inspiring, to say the least, but it also includes a roadmap that all of us can be encouraged by, which surrounds learning to love Jesus when nobody else is watching. Psalm 91:1 (NKJV) says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” A daily practice of visiting with Jesus and building that intimate relationship with the Creator leads to a life that can reshape a radical transformation that starts with a one-time event, but sustains through an entire life. Matthew 6:1 (NIV) “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. Here at Worship Leader we consistently see artists and worship leaders referencing a mentor or a coach that steps in at just the right moment and gives us a piece of advice or drops some scripturally based wisdom on us that changes our lives forever. In this episode of our devotionals podcast, The Walk, artist and songwriter Evan Craft tells a story of his first tour of South America, how it all “fell apart,” but how God used the chaos and the struggle to realign Evan's heart with his true purpose in ministry. James 1:2-4 (ESV) Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Be encouraged today that you are a part of something much bigger than yourself, and thank God for that as we all fall short of the glory of God. Be encouraged that you are really a soldier in God's great army and his sovereign will reigns supreme. In spite of what challenges may be in front of us, we can trust and know that in the testing we will develop the steadfastness needed to take on each day and fight the good fight. Be willing to be a good soldier that obeys the commands of your King. - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. "For All My Life" singer, songwriter, and worship leader TAYA is our guest in this episode of The Walk. She tells a story of how she has consistently chosen the way of Jesus in the midst of really difficult seasons. Her faith in God's goodness and mercy led her through a redemption process even though she continues to face the same hurt and letdown over and over and over again. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Along the journey and through those broken relationships she mentions, TAYA also tells of her father stepping away from the church and the deep hurt that caused her. But her constant companion of scripture, prayer, and worship are at the center of her faith journey. TAYA teaches us all, through her suffering, that God will comfort the broken hearted and is working all things for his glory. Psalm 34:18 (NIV) 18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. Who is TAYA Gaukrodger? Long before TAYA became one of UNITED's most acclaimed and impactful vocalists, with over one billion streams and numerous world tours over the last decade, her journey with Jesus began in the small town of Lismore, Australia. Her mother led her in the sinner's prayer at age five and she attended a small community church with her family where her father was an elder & worship leader. The singer grew up listening to the local radio stations, her father's record collection (Fleetwood Mac, Beatles) and classical music. After starting to lead worship in her high school years, TAYA cried out to God to use her: “I love to sing but whatever you want God.” After that, she couldn't shake the strong feeling she associated with singing faith-based songs. TAYA left Lismore for bustling Sydney at the age of 21 with only $200 dollars to her name and a very specific goal: to make music her career. Not wanting to just attend a church, TAYA began serving as a youth leader in her local church on Friday nights when she was off from her retail job. Her church began offering her opportunities, culminating in UNITED longtime producer & guitarist, Michael Guy Chislett, inviting her first to sing backing vocals on a recording project (which turned into UNITED's Zion album) then singing lead on the song that became the group's record breaking worship anthem of the decade, “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail).”
That’s what Freud said: Our spiritual longings are simply frustrated sexual desires. The opposite is actually the reality: Our sexual desires, all our desires, are frustrated spiritual longings. Then, if you’re anything like Perry and Shawna what you think is your deepest longing is never your deepest longing. Next, can you look yourself in the mirror, face the good, the bad, and the ugly. Face your worst failures, the skeletons in your closet. And then say, “Abba I believe you love me?” Because that’s what the gospel offers us. Then, God can do more in a moment of surrender than you could accomplish in a lifetime of striving. Last, we see our flaws and sins and failures and think “that’s how my world must see me.” But because the light of Jesus is in us, our world sees him way more than they see how flawed we are. An assist from worship leader Jon Reddick. Perry’s content is based on John Eldredge’s Knowing the Heart of God. Christian musician, worship leader, songwriter, and painter Jon Reddick is the guest on our episode today and what may seem like a random start to his story about his lawn lands home with a message that is always relevant. Our Father in heaven loves us so much that his light, beauty, and glory can literally cover over any of the “spots” we've allowed to develop. Whether those spots are on our lawn or in our heart, our God's grace is sufficient and our true power is shown in him working through our weaknesses. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV) 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. Who Is Jon Reddick? “Jon Reddick has been my worship leader for over eight years now,” shares TobyMac about Reddick. “He's not only a gifted singer who expresses soul and emotion as well as anyone I've ever heard, but also a songwriter whose lyrics awaken my heart to hope through God's love.” Growing up the son of a pastor and the church pianist in Memphis, TN, and brother to six siblings -- including his sister, Janice Gaines, who herself went on to become a Stellar Award and GMA Dove Award nominated recording artist for Motown Gospel. The Reddick family was infused in music. It was woven into Reddick's DNA from the start. Eventually, Reddick and his family made their way to Nashville, where God kept putting unlikely people in his path. He has had the opportunity to work on songwriting with artists like Matt Redman, Tommy Sims, Josh Kerr and Sheryl Crow. He is also one of the worship leaders at Church of the City working alongside Chris McClarney and led by pastor Darren Whitehead. In addition to being a talented musician, Reddick is also a creative visual artist. In a fusion of his artistic and musical sides he has painted the artwork for each of his music releases. For me, art is a way for me to get my words out. It gives voice to what I'm feeling, allows me to say something in my own way. It's okay to let people interpret it how they interpret it, because it's something bigger. I just want to be a conduit to help people reconcile themselves with God and each other,” Reddick says. “I want to bring people together. I consider it an honor and a privilege to get to lead people in the transparency of worship.” His song, "God Turn It Around," charted top 5 on BOTH airplay/audience charts for the four consecutive weeks In 2020 Mandisa recorded and released a version of his song "You Keep Hope Alive" which became a Top 15 Billboard Christian Airplay and AC radio single and Top 50 single of the year. He has also performed at LakeWood Church, multiple IF Gatherings, the Unite to Fight Poverty event, the Experience Worship Conference and the fall 2021 TobyMac Hits Deep Tour alongside Tauren Wells, Jordan Feliz, We Are Messengers and label-mates Cochren & Co. and Terrian.

As a young married man, Perry’s dad looked out the back window of his house across the field to the house he grew up in and thought, “Is this all my life is going to amount to?” Man, was he in for a surprise. Then, Shawna shared her deepest fear with a friend. Her friend said, “That could happen.” Shawna’s first reaction to that was nausea. The next was peace. Next, Darren Mulligan of We Are Messengers says, “If we make our music all about us, no matter how spiritual it sounds, we’re just worshipping ourselves.” Then, worship leader Taya says, “Worship looks like giving up what’s most precious to me, to find a greater Precious. Next, ask Jesus to open your mind to understand his word. Last, maybe the story of Jesus is just a myth. Has that ever crossed your mind? Perry says, “Yup.” Audio for Darren Mulligan and Taya provided by Sound Bites from Worship Leader Magazine.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode our guest, worship leader and artist Lydia Ignegneri, talks about how God used her worship ministry as a creative training ground to raise up her immensely talented, yet overactive and frustrated son. Being a mom and raising kids while running a full-time ministry isn't easy. Add in homeschooling four children, and it's a wonder that Lydia has time for anything at all. But her beautiful story of God speaking to her about the way in which to bring up her son Dominic should is a testimony to all of us about how we should approach this next generation of young leaders. Our faith communities are having a real issue with keeping our youth engaged with the Church. Two-thirds (66 percent) of American young adults who attended a Protestant church regularly for at least a year as a teenager say they also dropped out for at least a year between the ages of 18 and 22, according to a new study from Nashville-based Lifeway Research. So, it's more important than ever that all of us “look over our shoulders,” as Lydia said, and put real focus on allowing the young generations to take some ownership of our worship services, ministries, and the works of our Churches. As Psalm 145 says, “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. 5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. 6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. 7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.” - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. Mentorship and coaching is seen all throughout the Bible, but what is not talked about often is the sacrifice needed from both the mentor and the mentee. In this episode, Matt Maher takes us through a story of embarrassment and shame that shaped his faith walk and identified his need for a mentor. The biblical reference in the episode is based on Deuteronomy 34. 4 And the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” 5 So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord… Then to verse 9 - And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. Moses had sinned against God and, even though God had said all along that he would use Moses to lead his people to the promised land, he didn't allow Moses “into” the promised land. God showed Moses the completion of his vision, but didn't allow Moses to see it through himself. He used Moses's mentee, Joshua. What would that look like for you? Would you be okay if God had given you a vision, but didn't intend for you to complete that vision? Only to instigate it and be a part of pushing it along? We all assume we're the hero of our own story, but when we realize we're a small part of a much greater story, we release expectations and are more able to mentor and guide others, which is the way of Jesus. He mentored 12 through his entire ministry and in order to complete the vision God had for him he was required to die, much in the same way that Moses did. Of course, the people of that day thought that the vision died with Jesus, but for those of us who are followers of The Way, we know the good news that happened three days later. But, to the point of this episode, those that Jesus mentored founded the very church that still exists today. So, leaders, reflect on who has a similar call and vision to your own that you can mentor. For those who don't have a mentor, seek one out through prayer. We can also help be a resource for you as we provide mentorship and coaching through the Worship Leader Institute. Here's a great scripture to close us out: 1 Corinthians 3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. You know Jesus. You have for a long time. But maybe it’s time to rediscover who he really is. Jesse Reeves is church planter and a prolific songwriter. Among his songs, How Great Is Our God, Lord I Need You, Indescribable, Our God, and I Speak Jesus. Jesse toured with Chris Tomlin for 17 years. After that he helped plant Austin Stone Church a mega church in Austin, TX. Then he helped plant Passion City Church in Atlanta. But in 2017 the Lord challenged Jesse through his wife to reboot his life in Jesus. First, when Jesse’s wife Janet said: “Jesse, you’ve been paid to be a Christian since you were 15; you need to quit going to church for a year to rediscover who Jesus is.” Then, Jesse says, “We have everything in the west, mega-churches, vast resources to reach people for Jesus, but it’s not happening. What if we stripped everything down?” Next, Shawna admits, “I’m so busy, even with Jesus stuff, but I can miss making Jesus the center of my life.” Then, Jesse Reeves explores why hundreds of thousands of people in America aren’t coming to know Jesus. Next, if you’re a follower of Jesus, you’re a priest, you’re a bridge from people to God and from God to people. This has the power to change your ordinary life into the extraordinary, and bring spiritual awakening to America. Last, Umar went to a church in Nigeria intending to kill Christians, but Jesus had something entirely different in mind. Our culture celebrates things like “life hacks” and “faster is better” and “multi-tasking your way to success,” but all Jesus wants from us is to receive his Love and Abide with him. To develop a personal and intimate relationship with him takes time and a commitment to actually focusing on getting away and drawing close. In this episode of The Walk, worship leader and songwriter Aaron Williams tells a story about a very difficult situation that he had to walk through and that forced him to the intimate places to meet Jesus on a deeper level. Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” It's an incredible reminder that the disciples that actually walked this earth with Jesus had another level of authority given their intimate relationship with him. The gift of the Bible and the Holy Spirit mean that we still have access to study with and understand the living God, while actually talking with him and developing that personal relationship with him. These phrases “personal relationship” tend to bring with them the baggage of being overused “christianeze,” but that doesn't make them less true. Thank you to Aaron for this great episode and his challenge to us to find revival through building that intimate relationship with Jesus. - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more infor mation and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. This episode is brought to you by the Worship Leader Institute. When is the last time you spoke the name of Jesus over someone? Has God ever asked you to do something radical like walk away from the Church for a year to rediscover him? In today's episode, we feature a remarkable story followed up by an uncomfortable challenge surrounding our “priesthood” from Jesse Reeves. He's a church planter and a prolific songwriter with hundreds of titles to his name including How Great Is Our God, Lord I Need You, Indescribable, Our God, I Speak Jesus and a bunch more. He bases his challenge on this verse from 1 Peter. I Peter 2:9-10 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." It's important to note that both Jesse and all of us here at Authentic Media and Worship Leader are massive fans and supporters of the local church. There's no question that rest and rejuvenation are built into God's daily routines for us. In this episode we hear from pastor, author, and entrepreneur Curtis Zackery who tells an intimate story of when he was confronted with the need to rest. Most of us can relate to a situation where we were forced to stop due to our inability to listen to the father and slow down. It's almost built into the DNA of our culture to work so hard we end the day having nothing left. What if we could operate from a place of unending joy and vitality? Does God run out of energy? He does not, but even God took a sabbath day as he knew the value of rest. Exodus 31:17 NIV “17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'” He built it into HIS system for us that we have broken because we have been pursuing the world's system. Our way of life needs to be completely God centered. We should reorient our world around him leaving the things of this world, including stress and anxiety, behind. Let's all pursue rivers of living water today. John 7:37-39 ESV “37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” - - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. How good are you at listening to that still, small voice? Jenn Johnson from Bethel Music challenges us to be radically obedient to the voice of God in our daily walk. As a songwriter, artist, and record label executive, Jenn wears a lot of hats and the only way to do that successfully is by allowing the Holy Spirit to guide her every step. And, as a part of developing the listening ears needed to hear God's voice, Jenn reminds us to remove distractions and to simplify our lives. This great devotional podcast episode reminded us of when God revealed himself to Elijah. It wasn't through fire or earthquakes as it says in 1 Kings. 1 Kings 19:11-12 - Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. What are you doing to position yourself on a daily basis to hear the voice of God? What are some of the most memorable times in your life where you've heard His voice? God can work through any situation. That means a major career setback, financial stress, and even challenging personal relationships can all become opportunities to see God's hand in our lives. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself the question of what is the “God thread” in my life? Who has come before me and laid the foundation or created the path for me to be introduced to Jesus and what was that story? In today's episode of The Walk, Anna Golden recounts some of her very special family faith history involving a neighborhood Memphis church and its pastor and how that community gifted her family with Jesus. “Before they ever started asking them to come to church, they just started serving them.” How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” Isaiah 52:7 ESV This is a true “hands and feet of Jesus” story and we think it will really encourage you today. So many Worship Leaders are so concerned about being accused of “performing” and not actually leading worship. Questions like “are we doing it well?” and “how did we sound?'' come before the important question of “did we see lives changed?'' and “did people meet Jesus?” There's a tension that exists between the space of worship and the space of performance. Accusations of “that church just puts on a show” are prevalent within the western Church and our megachurches have spent lots of tithe money on creating a highly produced Sunday service. One might even say that the light show on Sunday helps keep the lights on the rest of the week. Elias Dummer knows a thing or two about this topic of worship versus performance. As a former successful CCM artist and lead singer of the band The City Harmonic and as a songwriter and Worship Leader for his local church, he has a unique perspective based on his years of experience. In this episode he addresses this issue by bringing us back to the basics of how we were created. Hopefully, through this episode, our tribe will be able to remove the fear of creating a performance culture and just focus on doing worship well and connecting the congregation with God. God can walk us through anything. In Cheri Keaggy's case it was the death of a parent. This episode makes me ask, how would I walk through a tragedy like that? Hopefully, as Cheri did, I would walk through it with scripture, prayer, and faith. Her testimony on how God brought the right Word at the right time is an important reminder for all of us. We limit how much the Holy Spirit can speak to us if we don't really know our Bible. In addition to comforting us during times of trials, like in Cheri's case, she also references the importance of knowing the Word of God in times of celebration. These two emotions of joy and pain are both a blessing when they are partnered with scripture and God's grace. For Cheri, those scriptures are also a guiding light in her songwriting process. "The Christian life is a fight against a never ending struggle against evil. It is not an earthly military campaign, but a spiritual battle." Can you imagine being in jail and knowing that you are “at the end of your journey?” Paul was awaiting his death and looking back at his life and taking stock when he wrote 2 Timothy. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 This episode is an encouragement to all Believers to finish the race and keep the faith. Charles encourages listeners to first recognize that there's a daily battle going on for your soul. Put on the armor daily. Next, to run towards the presence of God and live in the moment with the Holy Spirit as your guide. Let's not leave this world with regrets, but instead run the race for Christ as if each day is your last so we can “finish well.” The Walk is brought to you by Worship Leader Magazine , an Authentic Media brand. Kurtis Parks is a father and husband, a church planter, a worship leader, an author*, and a songwriter. We are blessed that he had the time to share this incredible devotional with us all about faith. Christians can always use a little bit more faith and it's a topic that, no matter how many times it's covered in any format, it's relevant. Sometimes God rewards our faith with tangible experiences that we can't deny are a result of His intervention. This episode has just such a story and it will truly blow your mind. God is so good and so alive. Today's episode is one of those worth listening to…twice. More about our podcast can be found on Worship Leader's website. https://www.kurtisparks.com/bio Scripture References Hebrews 12:26-29 About Our Sponsor - Next Sunday https://bit.ly/3P71uFw Will future generations find a church worth fighting for? A great reckoning is underway in the church today: a naming and exposing of the exclusivity, abuse, racism, patriarchy, and unchecked power that have marked evangelical Christianity for far too long. What kind of church will emerge on the other side? Like many families, the Beaches have been wrestling with this question. Together, Nancy and Samantha represent two generations: Nancy, a boomer, was a key player in the megachurch movement that revolutionized global ministry during the '80s and '90s, while Samantha, a millennial, is willing to abandon those massive buildings and celebrity cultures and find out whether the foundation holds. Each chapter offers their individual experiences and perspectives on a challenge facing the church and considers the way forward. Filled with deep introspection and keen insight, Next Sunday is a vulnerable conversation about what the church has been—and what it can be. Charles Spurgeon says of this psalm that "this is a good lesson for us to learn from the past experience of the Lord's people. God and God alone did deliver his servants in the past and herein is our confidence for the present and the future; our help is in the name the revealed and manifested character of Jehovah, the Creator of heaven and earth"Today we get to sing Psalm 124 as written by Wendell Kimbrough. In this bonus episode, we talk with two researchers working on a new project related to the changes in the "life curves" of recent top songs: how fast they rise on the charts, stay there, and ultimately fade out of use. We discuss the data and what it might mean for worship leaders who steward the song repertoires -- and consequently the faith -- of local congregations. Jump to Links and Resources When we gather together, it feels like the Lord is with us more than when we're not together. It's not that He's not with us, it's just a different kind of belonging. Transcript This is Cirina Catania with OWC Radio. Steven Reed of Worship Leader Magazine is here with me. And I am fascinated by what you do and who you do it for. So can you tell our listeners exactly what that is? And then tell us about your recent trip. Sure. So excited to be here and thankful you guys are doing a podcast like this. So my name is Steven Reed, and I'm with Worship Leader Magazine. I'm with several other people at different times, my wife and I, and our family, do some music and travel, and do consulting for churches. But then we also take all of that knowledge, all that experience that we've had over decades of leading worship and being involved in churches and doing that consulting work and put that into Worship Leader Magazine, which is an online resource that has just so many decades. It's basically 30 years of magazines and conferences. And we host a podcast of our own that we do with different worship and church influencers. And then we also get to go to different churches and preach and teach and lead people in worship. So it's been an amazing journey, for sure. And you're also an author. I also write a lot, obviously, write for Worship Leader Magazine, and I've written a book that is about ready to be published. I'm writing another book that was written later, but it's going to be done before delegating because a lot of church people are struggling with learning how to delegate to other people. And so that's exciting to be getting that out. I've written plays, I've written all kinds of different stuff, and it was kind of funny because I felt like I struggled in English class, with grammar and all those things. So I'm thankful for spell check, thankful for my wife, who knows some grammar. And the AP Stylebook, right? That's right. Yeah, I think it's interesting. Delegating is a problem that all businesses have. It's very difficult for someone who is either an alpha or very creative or the leader of a team. Sometimes teaching people how not to micromanage can be very, very valuable. That's awesome that you're doing that. So you're multi-talented,

Zac Hicks is the author of The Worship Pastor (Zondervan, 2016). Modern worship leaders are restless. They have inherited a model of leadership that equates leading worship with being a rock star. But leading worship is more than a performance, it's about shaping souls and making disciples. Every worship leader is really a pastor. The Worship Pastor is a practical and biblical introduction to this essential pastoral role. Filled with engaging, illustrative stories it is organized to address questions of theory and practice, striving to balance conversational accessibility with informed instruction. He grew up in Hawaii, studied music in Los Angeles, trained in Philosophy and Biblical Studies at Denver Seminary, and his current doctoral work is in the theology and worship of the English Reformation. Zac's passions include exploring the intersection of old and new in worship and thinking through the pastoral dimensions of worship leading. He is a songwriter, having recorded seven albums to date. Zac has contributed articles and posts to Worship Leader Magazine, Reformed Worship, The Gospel Coalition, and Doxology & Theology. Zac Hicks, (D.Min. candidate, Knox Theological Seminary; M.Div., Denver Seminary; B.A., Biola University) is Canon for Worship & Liturgy at Cathedral Church of the Advent (Birmingham, AL). When you sing the hymn I Surrender All, do you really mean it? Do our lives measure up to the songs we sing in church? How do we enter into authentic worship when the lyrics don't match our feelings? In a conversation sparked by a Worship Leader Magazine article called The Lies We Sing, Greg Thomas, David Ham, Harry Vaughn and Jessi Carrasco discuss these and other provoking questions on Music with a Mission.
This year when Worship Leader Magazine published their best of 2012 issue, the Worship track at Cedarville University was on the list. Behind much of the growth of Cedarville's program is a humble, kind, and very talented man named Roger O'Neel. Dr. O'Neel serves as the Director of the worship program. He has served the local church for over 20 years, including full-time worship pastorates in Texas, California, and Oklahoma. Dr. O'Neel has published articles on church music and leadership, blogs on worshipblogger.com, and is active as a worship leader, conference presenter, and worship consultant. Today we discuss the most important things that are missing from Modern Worship, we hear thoughts on worship from the next generation, and just have a great conversation in general.Voices In My Head is a Podcast dedicated to covering things like comics, movies, books, music and various other things that get stuck in the head of pop culture, but with a Theological lens.
