Jesse Reeves is a songwriter, musician, church planter, and father. As a songwriter, he has co-written several songs that are sung in the church around the world today including “How Great is Our God,” “I Speak Jesus,” “Our God,” “I Will Rise, “Lord, I Need You,” and more. As a musician, Jesse spent 17 years leading worship, touring and playing bass guitar in the Chris Tomlin Band. As a church planter, Jesse and his wife, Janet, have been a part of planting The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Tx and Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He and Janet have four children and live in Austin, Tx, where they pastor a network of house churches called KingsPorch. In this episode, I sit down with Jesse to talk about his rise to success in the Christian worship world, his burnout and dechurched experience, and how God rebuilt a robust faith and love for the church in Jesse's heart. This episode is brought to you by the Worship Leader Institute.   When is the last time you spoke the name of Jesus over someone? Has God ever asked you to do something radical like walk away from the Church for a year to rediscover him? In today's episode, we feature a remarkable story followed up by an uncomfortable challenge surrounding our “priesthood” from Jesse Reeves. He's a church planter and a prolific songwriter with hundreds of titles to his name including How Great Is Our God, Lord I Need You, Indescribable, Our God, I Speak Jesus and a bunch more. He bases his challenge on this verse from 1 Peter. I Peter 2:9-10 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." It's important to note that both Jesse and all of us here at Authentic Media and Worship Leader are massive fans and supporters of the local church. Please listen to this episode through the filter of iron sharpens iron and don't be afraid to reevaluate the status quo. After hearing this episode we challenge you to pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance and just see what God says. We are rooting for you and believe in local bodies of Believers living out the way of Jesus in community. Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. This podcast is brought to you by Authentic Media and Worship Leader Magazine. Our host is Joshua Swanson and the show's co-producer and editor is Matt McCartie. More episodes can be found here. People often ask my husband and I how we got our boys so interested in music, instruments and singing. That question is kinda hard to answer, because it's something that happened very organically. In short, it happened through family, friends, church and more.  In episode 31: Cultivating Music in Your Home, guest Ivory Doublette shares her story around her grandmother, mother and family cultivating music interest in her. Ivory describes how her mother would take cassette tapes and record gospel quartets on their visits to Chicago and then bring them back home to Alaska to listen and practice together as a family. Now, Ivory and her family have their very own family quartet called, SeVy. As a teaching artist with the MacPhail Center for Music, Ivory gives advice to parents/caregivers on how to make music come alive in their home.  Start at any age exploring music with your child. It's never too early or too late. Lead with PLAY & FUN!  Let instruments and music be fun and don't turn it into a job/chore for children or start thinking about them getting a college scholarship. Introduce to them music/instruments from other cultures and countries. Focus on who they are right now and show as a parent/caregiver that you are invested. Ivory and Sondra want to encourage you in this episode that cultivating music in your home is not work. Music is very bonding and the power of it builds confidence and spans across many generations. Don't assume that because you aren't very musical that your child won't be, either. Right now, Ivory has a few virtual music classes for which you can sign up you little humans today! See links below to sign up now.  So, like Ivory suggests, go pull out some kitchen spoons, plastic containers, pots and pans, and start making music in your home. It doesn't have to be an expensive investment to get started making music and memories.  Get to know Guest Ivory Doublette Ivory holds a Bachelors in Theater Arts from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She has performed regionally with MainStreet Theatre, The Marriott Theatre, Penumbra Theatre, Children's Theatre Company and many others. But believers anticipate a resurrection of their bodies to be glorified and reunited with their souls to enjoy the presence and fellowship of the Lord Jesus Christ forever, because He has secured. Greta’s personality is one of loving a super challenge and she has very strong faith in God and that God will make things wonderful. We get to hear about her youth and the way she wanted to get a new life at the age of 17, her hidden apartment. She grew up Catholic but moved to the Christian faith. Greta felt called to help kids, so her and her daughter started fostering. Greta was a nurse and so she took care of the kids that were hurt. One of the things Greta wanted is to get someone for her daughter (at first she thought little girl but a little boy came along), and Anthony was adopted him and about her daughter. I feel you should hear the interview, a lot was covered and it was a great open honest testimony. Greta said she wanted control (in her youth) and she sometimes bumped heads with her mom, but when her mom got older Greta had taken care of her mom and they moved in together, and she tells the story of that time in her life.
