Machine learning has helped shape just about every aspect of our digital lives, whether it's deciding which Netflix show or YouTube video to recommend to us or even teaching cars to drive themselves. One of the most innovative uses for machine learning, however, is in creating music. Just recently Google released Blob Opera, a machine learning tool by David Li that “pays tribute to and explores the original musical instrument: the voice.” There's a link below for you to try it out for yourself: all you have to do is direct each of the singing blobs by sliding its range up and down with your mouse, and listen as they compose their own harmonies. https://experiments.withgoogle.com/blob-opera (https://experiments.withgoogle.com/blob-opera) This sort of musical collaboration between humans and computers has been evolving for a surprisingly long time. There's some debate on just when the first electronic music was created, but the oldest recording comes from 1951. It's a sample of three songs created by Alan Turing's Ferranti Mark 1 computer, which filled up a whole room; the melodies were programmed by Christopher Strachey, a computer scientist who also drew upon his experience as a piano player to teach the computer how to play music. This early melding of art and science would pave the way for similar fusions of musical and scientific genius over the years. Want to hear the Ferranti's groundbreaking music for yourself? Now, thanks to machine learning and the development of artificial neural networks, computers can compose their own songs with hardly any human guidance at all. Here's a link to “Mister Shadow,” a song entirely composed and performed by Sony Computer Science Lab's “Flow Machines” AI system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcGYEXJqun8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcGYEXJqun8) They can even mimic human voices, using deep learning paired with existing recordings to study and then duplicate a particular kind of voice. In 2019 Yamaha used its new VOCALOID:AI vocal software to recreate the voice of legendary singer Hibari Misora on the 30th anniversary of her passing. What does machine learning really mean, and what does it mean for the future of the audio industry? The answer lies in patterns, and a computer's ability to recognize patterns and then generate new ones. Computers don't really know what music means, or even that they're making music. But by studying thousands and thousands of different songs, machine learning allows them to create a profile of all the different elements that those songs have in common, much the same way that facial recognition programs use thousands of pictures of people's faces to teach them what to look for. Then the computer takes everything it's learned about those songs and tries to create something new that fits the same profile. The first try probably won't be very good, but computers work fast, and each failure gives them more to learn from for their next try. With enough samples and enough feedback, the results start to sound less like noise and more like real music, even real singing. For Google's Blob Opera experiment, David Li recorded 16 hours of audio from six different opera singers and used it to teach the program how to sing opera. What we hear when we play it, however, doesn't come from any of those...

David Li is a pioneer in the maker community in China. In 2010, he co-founded XinCheJian, the first hackerspace in China to promote open source hardware. He is the current Executive Director of Shenzhen Open Innovation Lab, which facilitates collaboration among global hardware entrepreneurs to build innovative, eco-friendly products along the Belt and Road. In this episode, we unpack the notion of a “maker space” and how this concept is applied to China, especially in places like Shenzhen. David Li explains how one particular innovation, low speed electric vehicles (LSEVs) are critical, and even more important, than the electric sedan. LSEVs are experiencing a breakthrough moment, with the GM-backed Wuling Hongguang selling 15,000 units, at $US 4,000 each, within only 20 days after hitting the China market. China accounts for more than 50% of the global EV market, yet EVs make up roughly 5% of China's total auto market as of 2020. If you look back just under 40 years ago, the global Information Technology sector was completely different, from the perspective of the dominant countries and companies, from what it is today. However, it is exactly at that time that China started building a city that plays an extremely important role in the global supply chain of electronic goods and especially mobile phones. In this podcast, David Li, who works in Shenzhen, explains how the Chinese government selected Shenzhen, a rural fishing village of a few thousand people, 39 years ago as one of its Special Economic Zones. This decision, along with other factors that David elaborates on, led to Shenzhen today being responsible for over 60% of the global mobile phone market. One of the other highlights of this episode of The Tefo Mohapi Show is that David explains how Shenzhen's open innovation model differs from how things are done in Silicon. Part of this model is how Shenzhen technology ecosystem endeavors to turn high-tech into a commodity and as such has become a supplier to some companies that are creating technology products for underserviced communities like we have in parts of Africa.

Hacking China: Shenzhen, Shanzhai & the maker movement. Silvia Lindtner is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the School of Information. Silvia’s research and teaching interests include transnational networks of innovation and entrepreneurship culture, DIY (do it yourself) making and hacking, science and technology studies in China, and Internet and digital cultures. She is currently writing a book on the culture and politics of “making” and transnational entrepreneurship in urban China. Her research has been awarded support from the US National Science Foundation, IMLS, Intel Labs, Google Anita Borg, and the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation. Her work has appeared at ACM SIGCHI, ACM CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing), ST&HV (Science Technology & Human Values), Games & Culture, China Information, and other venues. Together with Professor Anna Greenspan and David Li, Lindtner co co-directs the China-based Research Initiative Hacked Matter, dedicated to critically investigating processes of technology innovation, urban redesign, and maker-manufacturing cultures in China.

Over the past 20 years, David has started several open source software projects and contributed to many others. David shares his insights on the maker-manufacturer scene in China – a particular type of grassroots innovation led by makers and Shanzhai manufacturers through informal and open source systems. The term Shanzhai originally referred to cheap copy cats of brand products and particularly mobile phones in China's hardware manufacturing center Shenzhen, but as David argues, has become way beyond copying.
