Hey Weirdos! Kicking things off after a little break for the school holidays, we are back with the amazing Emelye Parker from Bean. Em is Queen of all things pink and owner of independent & quirky shop Bean and plant-based cocktail bar The Black Cat - both in Falmouth in Cornwall. She's a big fan of all things fun, colourful and gay, and she is an absolute poster girl for being authentic and running a business that is true to you, to the core.I've wanted to get Emelye on the podcast for ages to talk about the insane negative 1* Google review her shop received, and how she turned it into the best publicity opportunity, including press, merch and a cult following that came to support and strengthen the brand and community she has so amazingly built. This is a true testament to the 'all publicity is good publicity' mantra, and shows that by those who are clearly NOT your customer speaking up, it brings forth tenfold those who are.As well as this juicy tale turned success story, Em shares how she built the brand, supports and stocks artists and creatives that align with her values and how she uses her storefront as a political and social lighthouse to beam out her messages and beliefs and stand true to the causes and organisations that she believes in. We discuss how activism and personal beliefs can exist in your business, both online and IRL.We also discuss how to un-beige your life and business, how to stay true to your niche and how neurodiversity plays a part in business planning. There's also plenty of hun culture references, lots of pink and a large dollop of authenticity, sprinkled with more pink! Thanks so much Emelye for being our fabulous Professional Weirdo!EM'S LINKSBean Instagram - www.instagram.com/beanfalmouthBean Tik Tok - https://www.tiktok.com/@beanfalmouth?_t=ZN-8uIoqWtnbMo&_r=1The Black Cat Instagram - www.instagram.com/theblackcatfalmouthAbout THAT Google review - https://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/23858594.bean-hive-sea-falmouth-one-star-google-review/MENTIONEDHey Hun it's Nicole - www.instagram.com/heyhunitsnicoleVictoria Essie Studio - www.instagram.com/shopvictoriaessie Hosted on Acast. Hey Weirdos! It's time for another Professional Weirdo! Today, I have the absolute pleasure of introducing an extraordinary woman, Kate, an Eco-chic warrior, who turned a life-changing event into a powerful mission. Five years ago, Kate survived a subarachnoid brain haemorrhage, an experience that made her realise how precious life is and that tomorrow is never promised. This sparked her passion to create Flotsam Flo, inspired by her beloved late Granny Florence, where she upcycles broken wetsuits, lifejackets, inflatables, banners, and other hard-to-recycle materials into stunning, eco-friendly bags and accessories. Kate's incredible work has earned her a Judge's Commendation for Circular Economy at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards, and her commitment to sustainability extends beyond her creations—she also runs workshops to inspire others to think differently about waste. In this episode, Kate talks about her journey, how tragedy and pain inspired her to grab life by the horns and be her true self, as well as chatting to us about how she gets waste, her process, incredible companies she's partnering with, what she's up to and how she's flying the flag for sustainability. Hey Weirdos! It's another solo episode this week, and would you look at that, she's only gone and got the duration down to 20 minutes! She's in her Efficiency era! It's a fun and light episode today, all about a juicy topic - Signs from the Universe. How does it all work? What in the incense stick am I talking about? Is it all a load of tosh or is there any truth in this?I personally believe that signs from the universe, (or 'Life' if you prefer to be less woo), can lead us in the right direction, give us pointers, affirm our current beliefs, change our course or even give us the answer to a big decision. In this episode I talk through 3 short stories of how I've used signs from the universe - 2 that came out of the blue that lead to big actions, and one that I asked for in making an aligned decision. Manifestation comes from the action we take after opportunity, so it's important that we first look for the magic in opportunity in order to take the course that is meant for us. I'll give you tips on how you can work with signs from the universe to give you the guidance you need in life and business, because as we all know, they are so interlinked. I'm a firm believer in fate, destiny, but also co-creating our reality and using a positive mindset and perspective to shape our future. I hope you enjoy listening along and I would LOVE to hear about any signs from the universe you receive or request. If you've enjoyed this episode, please rate, review or share to your socials. Hey Weirdos! I am buzzing this week to welcome such a character (or should I say characters?) to the podcast, the Incredible Queen of Wigs, Visibility Strategist, Helen Walker. Helen is on a mission to show women how easy attracting dream clients and making sales really is, by getting confident with video and standing out from the crowd. In her Instagram bio it says 'I'm the weirdo who actually loves sales', so she is literally THE perfect guest for this show, and I've also had the pleasure of experiencing her larger than life personality in real life. Her bubbly Northern voice is a treat to listen to, and I know you are going to get so much value from this episode.Taking Reels by storm, Helen brings comedy and her straight talking approach to the forefront to tackle the topic of selling and being visible - something she finds a huge proportion of women in business have huge fears around. Helen empowers women to lead incredible lives, through creating highly successful businesses and flipping the switch on the mindset of female entrepreneurs, particularly those who are telling themselves they are not worthy of their true dreams, they are not good enough and nobody wants to buy from them.In this episode we cover:Believing you aren't boringBecoming more visible online Why selling isn't sleazy Tackling hang ups about showing your face Being your own influencerHow to earn £5-£8k a month Why you aren't your product How wigs became her strategy Why Reels should be part of your marketing mix Impact online v IRLSociety's expectation of being a womanAnd just how to bloody sell more! Hey Weirdos! I'm braving it this week by putting out my first solo topic episode where I discuss a juicy topic with tips + advice. Something I'd planned to do more of from Autumn, integrating around interview episodes, but that I was compelled to spontaneously record after a recent experience with internet trolling!Join me as I share my first experiences of negative comments online as a Millennial teenager, as we navigated the internet as Digital Natives, graduating the experience by discussing dealing with your first troll in your business. To some, getting your first troll can be a good thing (“Look Mom, I made it!”), but the reality for many is that it can also be a negative or stressful experience - especially for Neurodiverse or emotionally sensitive business owners. I'll share my experience of what happened to me last week when I unwittingly outed myself as a blonde, middle aged jilted ex-wife to over a million people (note: I'm a happily married brunette 30 something), when I was simply trying to show appreciation to a fellow industry supplier. How did I put my foot in it so badly, what did the trolls say, and what did I do to fix it? Tune in to find out. Whether you're dealing with a troll at present, you've had your share in the past, or it's something you've yet to experience, I hope my episode helps you to feel like you're not on your own and gives you the invisible weaponry to tackle those keyboard warriors head on! It may not be the answer you think! In true ADHD style I also enjoy a side topic discussing goal setting and accountability and how the internet can be a great place for a community of likeminded folk who will have your back. Just make sure you're prepared if a troll slips in the back door! Here's that Red Cross Twitter faux pas article if you were interested too: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/red-cross-rogue-tweet_n_824114Keep being your amazing weirdo self, and don't let those trolls get you down!
