EPISODE 86 - “ANNA MAY WONG: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 5/5/2025 Anna May Wong was once the most famous Chinese woman in the world. The trailblazing actress, philanthropist, and fashion icon appeared in over 60 films and was a celebrated star, yet, at the time, she was not allowed to kiss a Caucasian man on screen, which limited the roles she could take, and she was not allowed to buy a house in Beverly Hills. A strange dichotomy, indeed. In recent years, she has enjoyed a much-deserved resurgence. Known as a Trailblazer and a cultural icon, she paved the way for generations of Asian and Asian American actors by proving that talent and perseverance could transcend racist casting conventions. Her life and career continue to influence conversations about diversity, representation, and the politics of race in Hollywood. This week, she is our Star of the Month. Another busy week saw The Mariners remain in the play-off hunt with a defeat at fellow promotion contenders Crewe followed up by a victory over struggling Morecambe at BP. Chris, Helen and Liam begin by discussing the absence of talisman Danny Rose on Tuesday night and how his return on Saturday underlined his importance to the team. They then dissect the win over the Shrimps, the comfortable nature of the result (in the end!) and the impact of a rejuvenated Kieran Green. The other big news story coming out of the club this week was the announcement of the 25/26 season tickets and the price increase that has split opinion within the fanbase. The panellists debate the pro's and con's of the decision and speculate as to the potential fall out between the club and the Mariners Trust as a result. In Part Two Rhys Howell from The Yorkshire Post helps preview what will undoubtedly be a big game next weekend for both Grimsby and Harrogate, albeit due to differing reasons. +++ Hosted and produced by Chris Mills with guests Helen Walker, Liam Wood and Rhys HowellSubscribe to our mailing list for weekly bonus content - https://mailchi.mp/41dfa5ea31ac/view-from-the-findus Find all the latest VFTF news, archive episodes, written articles and panelist bios on our website - https://viewfromthefindus.wordpress.comFollow us on X or Instagram; the handle for both is @VFTFindus or get in touch with the show via email - viewfromthefindus@gmail.com Supported by Message in a Bottle - https://www.miabcleethorpes.net or @miabcleethorpes Intro / Outro music - "Fight The Feeling" by Kid Spirit. EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Her bubbly Northern voice is a treat to listen to, and I know you are going to get so much value from this episode.Taking Reels by storm, Helen brings comedy and her straight talking approach to the forefront to tackle the topic of selling and being visible - something she finds a huge proportion of women in business have huge fears around. Helen empowers women to lead incredible lives, through creating highly successful businesses and flipping the switch on the mindset of female entrepreneurs, particularly those who are telling themselves they are not worthy of their true dreams, they are not good enough and nobody wants to buy from them.In this episode we cover:Believing you aren't boringBecoming more visible online Why selling isn't sleazy Tackling hang ups about showing your face Being your own influencerHow to earn £5-£8k a month Why you aren't your product How wigs became her strategy Why Reels should be part of your marketing mix Impact online v IRLSociety's expectation of being a womanAnd just how to bloody sell more! EPISODE 51 - “Richard Conte (Star of the Month) ” - 09/02/2024 ** This episode is sponsored brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** In the great film noir classic Thieves Highway, a gripping drama that takes on the dirty underbelly of the trucking industry, the spectacular RICHARD CONTE plays Nick Garcos, a world-weary, jaded, World War II vet who returns home. After finding his family's produce business in shambles and his father crippled, he seeks revenge against the crooked rival produce dealer who caused his father's accident. In his gripping portrayal, Conte shows his strengths as an actor. With his square shoulders, cleft chin, and intense eyes, Conte gives the impression that he means business. Conte was just as comfortable playing mobsters and street hoods as he was playing charming, sympathetic leading men. He always projected manly strength, and you knew he was no one you wanted to mess with. So say hello to our Star of the Month, RICHARD CONTE. For this Paramount 1945 episode, we look at a couple of male melodramas: The Man in Half Moon Street, a Gothic B-movie starring Nils Asther, "the most beautiful man who ever lived," according to Elise, as a scientist who becomes unscrupulous in his pursuit of eternal youth, and Salty O'Rourke, a Raoul Walsh-directed hit starring Alan Ladd as a racetrack gambler who manipulates an unruly young jockey. The movies also boast fairly substantial love interest parts for Helen Walker as a socialite who sympathizes with Asther's Ubermensch impulses and Gail Russell as a schoolteacher who's caught up in Ladd's schemes. We dive into the question of how to create audience sympathy for a villain-protagonist and the curious nature of the Ladd phenomenon. Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s: THE MAN IN HALF MOON STREET [dir. Jenna and Veronica sit down to discuss both versions of Nightmare Alley – Edmund Goulding's noir take from 1947 starring Tyronne Power, Joan Blondell, Coleen Gray, and Helen Walker, and Guillermo Del Toro's recent release starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Toni Collette. Veronica loved the newest version and then felt middling on the '40s movie. Jenna loved the '40s version and felt middling about Del Toro's. But then again, she always feels that way about Del Toro movies and isn't completely sure why. In this episode, Jenna and Veronica hash it out – both their differing opinions on these movies, the necessity of random violence in film, and an attempt to get to the bottom of Jenna's issue with Del Toro films. They also touch upon other directors who dazzle but can leave certain audiences flat.
Welcome to the Speakeasy! Nightmare Alley is a 1947 American film noir directed by Edmund Goulding from a screenplay by Jules Furthman.[2] Based on William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel of the same name, it stars Tyrone Power, with Joan Blondell, Coleen Gray, and Helen Walker in supporting roles. Power, wishing to expand beyond the romantic and swashbuckler roles that brought him to fame, requested 20th Century Fox's studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck to buy the rights to the novel so he could star as the unsavory lead[3] "The Great Stanton", a scheming carnival barker. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speakeasy-noircast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/speakeasy-noircast/support

Pretty actor Tyrone Power comes back from WWII and wants to play more serious part. So here he is as a carnival worker who rises through like as an increasingly successful con man. Until he doesn’t. Great noir visuals and wonderful performances by the underseen Helen Walker, and the can’t-be-overseen Joan Blondell. Host Shelly Brisbin with Annette Wierstra and Nathan Alderman.

Te Mata Figs' Murray Douglas and Helen Walker were left with piles of fig waste once they'd made their fig molasses. The waste was initially given to cows as a feed but knowing its nutritional value they've found other uses for it.
Is it horror? Is it film noir? It's THE MAN IN HALF MOON STREET (1945, Murphy) starring Nils Asther and Helen Walker! With a powerful score from Miklós Rózsa and a plot from Barré Lyndon, this certainly is A Film To Watch! Context setting 00:00; Synopsis 18:31; Discussion 30:29; Ranking 43:21
What is technology trying to tell us in an emergency? James Bridle, in conversation with Serpentine Galleries CTO Ben Vickers, discusses 'New Dark Age' and the dark clouds that gather over our dreams of the digital sublime. As the world around us increases in technological complexity, our understanding of it diminishes. What is needed is not new technology, but new metaphors: a metalanguage for describing the world that complex systems have wrought. We don’t and cannot understand everything, but we are capable of thinking it. Technology can help us in this thinking: computers are not here to give us answers, but are tools for asking questions. Understanding a technology deeply and systemically allows us to remake metaphors in the service of other ways of thinking – without claiming, or even seeking to fully understand – and to ask the right questions to guide us through this new dark age. The discussion, presented in collaboration with Serpentine Galleries and the Goethe-Institut, also featured a performance by artist and writer Erica Scourti and a screening of We Help Each Other Grow (2017) by They Are Here, a collaborative practice steered by Helen Walker and Harun Morrison.
There is no question that our world is becoming increasingly complicated as our down time diminishes. Because we are being pulled in so many different directions with little time to process our experiences it is easy to feel disquieted. In extreme cases this can develop into full-blown social anxiety. In this conversation Helen Walker talks about how we can identify the roots of social anxiety in this sense of overwhelm and disconnection from what is important in life. If you are are feeling overwhelmed by your day you will find what Helen has to offer very helpful.
In this podcast, our guest is Helen Walker who is a Physio for Athletes. The reason I wanted to get Helen on the podcast today is because she's been doing screenings for the number of my swimmers because they want to get checked up if they're inflexible in any areas or if they need to strengthen any parts of their body to make them a more well rounded and complete swimmer so that they not only swim better but avoid injuries.
We're on the road in Preston at the UK's National Astronomy Meeting. Our first special show describes what NAM is and what happened on the first day. In our second show we catch up with Chris Wareing who announced results about the wakes left by dying sun-like stars as they pass through the interstellar medium. On the third day David Boyce (University of Leicester) and Paul Steele (University of Leicester) join us to chat about the various sessions that took place. We find out about the organisation of the conference from Dr Stewart Eyres, chat to Dr Monica Grady and find out about the International Heliophysical Year from Dr Lucie Green. On day four Neil Phillips (University of Edinburgh) joins us in our attempt to coherently link interviews about the dangers of solar ejections to astronauts, the possibility of making force-fields to protect them, the Hubble Space Telescope repair mission, the Herschel Mission, the fiftieth anniversary of the Sky At Night and exoplanets. The last day of the NAM sees us talking to Dr Chris Davis about the STEREO mission, Dr Helen Walker about Mars Express and Prof Mike Bode about RS Ophiuchi.
