Stardom Road was Marc Almond's first release since his near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2004. It was a long, dark path to recovery that left him unable to write songs and he required singing lessons to find his voice again. Once over that hurdle, Marc returned to the studio to work on a covers album, the concept being that the selected songs contained a narrative relating to his life. Stardom Road was over two years in the making, the project growing from humble beginnings to full orchestral productions of some well-known classics and several obscure, lesser-known tracks. We talk about each song individually, delve deeper into the track selections and discuss how Marc's versions compare to the originals, culminating in an album rating out of ten from both of us. We made a Spotify playlist of the original recordings, which creates an enjoyable comparative experience. You can listen here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/74cWCP3yhNbgJ296XLDfNB?si=1ae316ca2fac49f8 We also had a lovely message from Katarina Kovac, who explained how she discovered Marc Almond before going on to record this incredible cover of his song 'Only The Moment': https://youtu.be/EuY9-oa5iDI?si=IknKS0-hF0ibYCE8 Our review of the UK singles and album charts for the week of release in June 2007 noted a tangible difference between the artists and styles, with the singles chart full of nightclub-friendly heavy beats and samples from the likes of Akon, Gym Class Heroes, Hellogoodbye, and Mutya Buena covering Bob Marley and the Whalers, Supertramp, Avril Lavigne, and Lenny Kravitz respectively. The album charts were much more band-centric and featured singers with musicians, rather than electronically generated sounds, such as Amy Winehouse, Maroon 5, Pigeon Detectives, Kaiser Chiefs, Michael Buble, and the Arctic Monkeys. Our Top 3 picks for this episode were our favourite duets. The Clause are a four-piece from Birmingham who bring together the swagger of the 60s, the rolling groove of the 80s and the riotous verve and attitude of the 90s.  Pearce Macca (front man), Niall Fennell (drummer) Jonny Fyffe (bassist) and Liam Deakin (guitarist) effortlessly combine huge hooks with gritty verses, indie sensibilities and rhythm and blues groove and melodies to create an altogether different beast. The music defies categorisation, rolling seamlessly from crashing percussion to huge, swinging bass. There are epic singalong choruses destined for stadiums and packed festival main stages, and darker, edgier moments evoking late night cruises down dingy back streets. The band have been together since they were kids and they have matured into one of the UK's most exciting new bands. They have hit the road throughout the autumn and winter of 2022 supporting The Reytons, on their sold-out nationwide tour, following main support slots for the Pigeon Detectives, DMAs, The Enemy and The Snuts. The band completed a 16 date solo national tour in March 2022 and then embarked on a series of gigs to finish the year with a seven date solo tour culminating in a sold out 1300 capacity home town gig in Brum at the O2 Institute in late December. The live work now continues with a tour of major cities in spring 2023 including London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester. The band have been featured, to date, on Radio 1, 6, X and XS as well as Soccer AM & Clashmusic.com. They were also honoured to play on Radio 1's Big Weekend last year. In 2022 they have released the single ‘Electric', which has been played across BBC Radio Leicester, BBC Radio Derby, BBC Radio Nottingham, Student Music Network and more, and they followed this with their summer release ‘Forever Young' in July. Previous to this, two singles have reached No1 in the iTunes rock chart and just outside the Top 20 on the main chart and they have been playlisted by Spotify on All New Rock, Deezer's Hot New Rock and YouTube's Your New Alternative Playlist. The last three singles have witnessed real growth with over 4 million streams and 65k monthly listeners. There are plans for a release in early 2023 with a high-profile collaboration in the offing later in the spring. Watch this space! The Clause have had extensive support across all media – Soccer AM, BT Sports, This Feeling, Gigslutz, Band of the Day on Maximum Volume Music and Scottish Music Network among many others, plus a cover feature in the Sunday Mail and two-page interview on the Daily Record. They have also recently been awarded the BMA ‘Best Band' for the second year running, as well as ‘Best Indie and Alternative' act. #NewMusic #Interviews #Stories #SocialMedia

The Wombats have defied all UK press scepticism (and cynicism) to become one of the country's biggest indie pop bands. Big streaming audiences, huge social media followings and a multi-generational fanbase now pretty much guarantee the Wombats will hit no. 1 on the album charts, as new album ‘Fix Yourself Not the World' has proved. They also secure headline festival slots and sell out shows and tours, not just at home but even in the USA.  Having come to know and admire the band's songcraft on their previous record Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life In 2018, I'm fascinated by The Wombats' story. How did the band defy the critics and cultural trends (indie has hardly been in cultural favour for the past 20 years) to become every young bands dream: independent, popular, commercially successful and on a seemingly unstoppable creative roll? The answer is multi-faceted of course. The band is a close knit, collaborative unit of multi-instrumentalists, all trained in music and sound production at Liverpool's LIPA. They have ridden a wave of ‘pop as the new indie', adjusting their sound to be something way beyond their early post-punk/grunge guitars of the early 2000s. At the core of their success are those songs - catchy, bouncy, poppy earworms - some of which have topped 100 million streams. When I was reading through the reviews for The Wombats' latest album Fix Yourself, Not the World, it was The Guardian's Alexi Petridis who put it best:“Scroll down the Wombats' Spotify page and you come to the section headed “Fans also like”. It features a selection of their mid-00s contemporaries, fellow strivers in the league of what was cruelly dubbed “landfill indie”: the Pigeon Detectives, the Kooks, the Enemy, Scouting for Girls”.In my conversation with Dan Haggis of The Wombats for The Art of Longevity, I didn't want to be the one to bring up the phrase landfill indie but I didn't have to...Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

We're a little late this week, apologies for that, but, hey, who can blame us, we're having to dive back into one of our least favourite scenes in musical history; the indie landfill boom of the mid-00's. This week we look at the fourth album from Leeds based indie nothing-men The Pigeon Detectives, released on the 29th of April 2013.  You might feel that, having already discussed the likes of Razorlight, The Vines, The Enemy and The Twang there isn't much gas left in the tank from Steve or Remfry when it comes to yet another one of these artists, but, actually, one of us is particularly wound up by the bands bland, jaunty noodlings. Having had a number three UK hit in 2007 with their debut album Wait For Me, The Pigeon Detectives seemed to make it their life mission to hang out with as many appalling and objectionable people as possible. This meant a record number of performances on Sky's risible flagship football banter show Soccer AM, going on tour with fellow hometown tossers The Kaiser Chiefs, allowing one of their gigs to be filmed by the internet TV company of gormless everyman and Sunday Brunch presenter Tim Lovejoy and inviting lunatic former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino up onstage with them to piss all over Jimi Hendrix's Hey Joe. So far, so easy to hate.  Unsurprisingly the band suffered badly as the 2010's quickly re-evaluated the artistic merits of the indie scene, and We Met At Sea was their first album not to chart, was savaged by the critics and even the band themselves struggled to formulate a coherent sentence to justify their existence. But is it really that bad, or is it just really dull?... well… it's kinda both actually.

2020 has affected freelancers in so many different ways and in this week's episode, we focus on the musical career of singer-songwriter, Paul Henshaw. Paul had a goal to build a business as a performer and to be entirely self-sufficient from it. All was going well having released a new album towards the end of 2019, but we all know what happened soon after. So how did lockdown affect him, as a performer, as a human, and as a business person? What did he do to mitigate the damage? What are his goals for 2021? During this episode, Paul gives us an exclusive performance too. We also finish the podcast with a festive treat, the lyrics of which are at https://freelance-heroes.com/podcasts/. About Paul Henshaw With a catalogue of albums encompassing Henshaw's solo and full band work including the highly acclaimed "Five Compass Lighthouse" released in November 2019, and the 2020 release of the Henshaw & Booth (Dan Booth of Ferocious Dog) duet album “Revisit”, the growth Henshaw has experienced is clear. His songs are written from the heart with life experiences and stories clearly having the biggest influence. Paul Henshaw albums are always a roller coaster of emotions. As a songwriter, Henshaw's lyrics have been likened to poetry, painting scenes that take you on a journey to the very place or situation being sung about, from the sad story of a young man who took his own life or going to an Iron Maiden concert with his 76-year-old Nan. Whether playing solo, with the backing of his band (The Scientific Simpletons) or as the Henshaw & Booth duet, he knows that an exciting and energetic live show is the key to making a performance a personal and memorable one, a message echoed over and over by his established and ever-growing following. Henshaw has shared stages with the likes of Mark Chadwick (The Levellers), Ferocious Dog, Pigeon Detectives, Newton Faulkner, Tony Wright (Terrorvision), Gary Stringer (Reef), and has played numerous festivals including the 2019 Glastonbury Festival. Paul Henshaw is a committed, professional, and experienced songwriter and performer who strives to make interesting music with songs that are deep and drenched in honesty.
