Fuuuuuhriends! You know what I'm talking about, come on, don't bust balls, come on now.Today the Friendsmen welcome our friend Cam (@AnnaDelveyPP), affectionately known as ADPP. Cam is new to the show Friends, a blank slate. We practice immersion therapy by exposing him to as much of the Friends Televisiotronic Universe (FTU) as his brain can handle before he attacks us in a primal rage.I just invented a word, we need a word like 'Cinematic Universe', but for TV. “Mr. Jack Allison was it?” asked a lithe-looking black man wearing wire-rimmed frames and a long white Doctors lab coat. “Ayup.” Said Jack. “Follow. I'll give you a tour of the facilities.” The Doctor said and they were off, through the entryway and out into the main lab which was abuzz with activity. Various lab-coated individuals flitted about the space, wearing safety goggles and testing things: some with tubes and vials, others with a dropper, slides, and a microscope, in all cases accompanied by another technician with a clipboard. “Welcome to ADPP industries Mr. Allison. I hear you're interested in my serum.” “Interested?” Said Jack, speeding up to walk side-by-side with the Doctor. “Hell, more than interested Doc. We need this for our men in the field, yesterday. It'd give us a real leg up over the other merc outfits in the market right now.” “Ah yes, for your... Slurpee Group.” The Doctor mused. “Slurp Squad Security Inc.” Jack said, maybe too forcefully, as the Doctor abruptly stopped walking for a moment and shot him a look. “Respectfully,” Jack added with his hands up in a placating gesture. The Doctor made an audible harrumph but they continued walking, silence as their new companion. Once they reached the elevator, Jack watched the Doctor undergo a brief retinal scan and fingerprint scan, then he watched him input a special code. Once done the elevator hummed to life. Jack didn't know how many floors raced past them as they shot up the transparent tube, but he knew they exited on the top floor. The Doctor then led him to his office door, where a similar biometrics and keypad tango played out to gain access. With the door unlocked and the two of them inside, the doctor motioned Jack to sit down in either of the twin leather seats, before taking his place behind a massive, brushed aluminum and glass desk. When both were seated, the Doctor leaned down on his right to input a code into a panel Jack couldn't see. It must have been a safe because after the keypad beeps, Jack heard something hiss and click before the Doctor reached in and withdrew something. A neon-red liquid sample in a glass vial, which swirled with highly active bubbles. He set it on the desk followed by his two elbows as he leaned forward, hands steepled, eyes centered on Jack. “You've heard of the Berserker state, I presume?” He asked, “that trance-like state of rage first recorded by the Vikings? A state in which could make any man immune to all physical blows, fear, compassion, causing them to transcend in totality into the perfect killing machine? Well, ask yourself, what is it that makes a man truly angry?” Jack could tell the Doctor was loving this, really enjoying hearing himself speak. “And how do we not only harness that emotion but maintain it? Those questions, we believe have been definitively answered with the synthesis of the serum before you.” Jack stared awe-struck at the swirling vial. “Does it not scare you, Allison?” asked the Doctor, “To be in the presence of rage incarnate? ” “Hell no, I ain't scared,” said Jack and to prove it, he shot out of his chair, uncorked the vial and downed it, paying no heed to the doctor's shrill protests. “You fool!” was the last thing Jack heard before his world went dark. After some time, it could have been seconds, minutes, hours. Jack opened his eyes and saw red, the entire world drenched in the bloody shade. He looked at the doctor who had at first been crouched over him, but was now backing away from him, slowly. Curiously, the doctor had two voices, one that was far off, muffled as if Jack's ears were covered in cloth. He thought he could make out words like “Stop!” and “Get away!” and “Security!” But Jack couldn't be sure, and besides, he wasn't interested in the muffled voice. He wanted to confront the one that was clear as day. The one that was grating his nerves. The one that was saying foolish things like, “Ducktales is Canon!” Roaring with fury, Jack charged.

The Boys are joined by Cam to talk about washing dishes, a theme park of our dreams, and our final wishes that our Sims live on with out us.

[Jack wakes with a start and runs to the mirror, he reaches to stroke his once unfamiliar long, white beard only to realize it’s gone! He examines his face from every angle, and looks down at his stomach: sizable but not rotund! A jaunty Christmas tune begins to play in the background as Jack runs into the kitchen to see his beautiful wife looking sad and cooking eggs. Jack skips to her and grabs hold of her waist spinning her in a dancers twirl.] Jack: “Cait! Cait! Get out the decorations, it’s Christmas Eve!” Cait: “But Jack you banned all Christmas from the house, the night before last!” Jack: ”That’s in the past Cait! I had this wonderful dream last night you see, and you were there and Kenny was there and...Bah! Who cares it doesn't matter now, because, I..I..” [jaunty Christmas tune gets louder] Jack: [singing] “I think that I love Christmas, more than yester-year! And I don’t want a Christmas, to miss us! This year!” Cait: “Wait what’s going on here, are you singing right now? Where did that music come from, and [gasps] those decorations! Jack how are you doing all this?” Jack: ”It's all gravy Cait-y! Just got a little holiday magic left in me is all, and we’re gonna need every bit of it y’know! [whispers] For what comes next...” Cait: Wait! What comes next? Jack: “Well the second verse of course! “ Cait: ”Now hold on just a sec—“ Jack:[singing] ”So bring out all the presents!...“ Cait: “Woah where did those come from, and did you just wrap these!?” Jack:[singing] “Loved ones and good cheer!...“ Cait:”Mom? Dad? And all my friends!? Where did you...How did you all just?—“ Jack[singing]: “Cus I don’t want a Christmas, to miss us! This year!” Cait: “Okay! this is all just too much, where’s Kenny? I need to lie down.” Jack: “No Cait! We need you to sing, the last verse requires all of us!’ Cait: “What does that even mean? Besides I don’t even know the words!” Jack: ”You do Cait, they’ve been in your heart this whole time. I’m sorry I broke your Christmas spirit, but that was the old Jack! So please, won’t you let the new Jack help you fix it?” Cait: [nods] Jack: “Okay then, take my hand and close your eyes.” Everyone: [singing] “For in our hearts there’s ringing, joyful loud and clear! The flags at the JackAm studios are flying at half mast today to recognize the loss of a very important woman in Cait’s life, Grandma Besse. In honor of this very special lady and her dazzling legacy, to those reading this I would ask that if you have parents/a parent that you’re on good terms with, and you have yet to call or text them this week, please take a moment and just do it! Your phone’s probably in your hand right now anyway, so what do you have to lose? Oh and while you’re at it, reach out to all those close friends you can’t live without, and don’t forget those siblings, who’ve done you no harm but you don’t talk to all that often. And for just a little while set aside your insecurities and just...speak up! Let those important ones in your life hear that you care for them! Too sentimental of an approach? You stride through the busy streets of 18th century London, getting lost in the hustle and bustle until you happen upon a young street-urchin, of a size barely cresting the silver pommel of your walking cane. The young chap looks up at you with cupped hands and asks, “Please sir...may I have some bud?” Moved by his need, you open your traveling purse and withdraw a dank nuggy dropping it into the lad’s waiting palms. He gasps and stares at the sticky-icky, tear-filled bright eyes behind lazy brown curls,  “for me, sir?” You nod at him smiling and ruffle his dirty hair.  “Why don’t you run along now” you say, pointing your walking cane in the direction of a young yellow-haired lass, who was trying her best to stay hidden,  “and go share that with your little girlfriend over there, eh lad?”  The boys cheeks flush crimson and he stammers, “Cait? She’s not my girlfriend! I don’t fancy her sir, honest!” “Right you are lad!” you say with a wink and a chuckle. The ADPP is currently on a broken computer induced hiatus, but that’s given us some time to think about our content. This is a bit of a ‘workshop’ episode between Matthew and Colin of ThePodcastHost.com and Podcraft.

If you’d really like to start making your own Audio Drama, but you have 101 reasons why you can’t just yet, then this episode is for you.We’ve got two guest segments. The first is from Brian Mock who has literally just started his own Audio Drama production journey. Brian has started a zombie apocalypse show Z-Poc Nation, and he’s encouraging you to get over the many fears and doubts in your mind as you ponder starting your own show. Brian’s message is simple, getting set up doesn’t need to be difficult, or expensive.The second is from creator of The Fall Audio Drama and man of many voices Dayn Leonardson. In Dayn’s piece he’s going to explain how he voiced multiple characters in his show, and offer you a few tips and tricks for doing the same in yours.We also have a splendid trailer for Audio Epic’s Witch Hunter Chronicles. A = Anthology or Serial?What kind of series would you like to make? Doing a serial with ongoing story arcs and characters will give your listeners that extra reason to come back for more. But if you’re the type of person who comes up with five different story ideas a day, maybe the anthology is the route for you. For more discussion on this topic check out our episode ‘Should I make a serial or anthology series?’ B = Balancing/Blending inYour story is going to be told entirely by a collection of different sounds. You might have an actor recording lines her a bedroom in San Diego, whilst another records his in a basement in Madrid. You might have recorded some sound effects in your kitchen, and have others from a professional stock library.The point is that these must all be balanced and blended together in a way that they become one performance. Take time to make sure nothing jars the listener – if something sounds odd or alien to your mix, you need to sort it or replace it. C = CharactersWrite each character with a lot of thought. Who are they? What do they want? Why do they want it? And what stands in their way?Make your characters real people, not one-dimensional caricatures who only serve the purpose of furthering a particular plot aim. Explore their lives, their feelings, their interactions. Build relationships and conflicts. And treat ‘minor’ characters with respect – they may work well enough that you want to build future stories around them and their own lives. D = DAWA Digital Audio Workstation is the software you’ll use to build your Audio Drama. There are several great options out there when it comes to choosing one. Audacity is free and can get you started, but if you think you’re going to stick at audio production you will eventually find it quite limiting. Reaper and Audition are two popular DAWs in the Audio Drama production space. Our advice is to pick one and stick with it, better to master one than be reasonable with three or four. E = EditingContrary to popular belief, making Audio Drama isn’t all flash cars, champagne, and pool parties. Expect to find yourself hunched over a computer screen for hours on end, carefully crafting the tiniest nuances into your soundscape that literally no one is even going to notice – but at the same time you break out in a cold sweat at the thought of leaving them out. F = Final MixThis term is a misnomer in Audio Drama. Nothing is ever really finished. You will always listen back and hear missed opportunities. “Why did I not include the sound of a curtain blowing in the open window across the street?”. Get used to this.When you think you are finished though, you need to listen to your show in as many different ways as possible. Yes it sounds great through your fancy headphones, but does it still work through the laptop speakers, car speakers, or cheap earbuds? I know it’s sacrilege that people will consume your masterpiece this way but that’s just the harsh reality of the world we live in.Never do your final listen sitting at the computer staring at the multitrack, if you do this you are ‘listening with your eyes’. Take your show for a walk, literally. Go out with the earbuds in, and if you notice something missing, or a bit too low/loud, or maybe a piece of dialogue just isn’t hitting the right beat, go back home and adjust it. G = GenreWhat kind of world do you want to live in? The beauty of Audio Drama is that it is completely limitless, you can set your show anywhere. Build fantasy kingdoms, sprawling space stations, decaying post-apocalyptic cities, or set a comedy show in the living room of your own house.We often use this quote from our interview with Dirk Maggs, but it sums up the freedom of this medium wonderfully.“You can do so much more in audio, you can go anywhere. Use your imagination; go from the top of Everest to the depths of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. Travel to new worlds. Go inside someone’s head… go inside and live in their head…you can go microscopic…you can go cosmic.Good radio drama, good audio drama, is ‘go and make a world’, go and paint a picture in sound, which makes the imagination create huge fascinating pictures… even huge fascinating pictures of tiny things. If it’s a man locked in a cell for twenty years, and you are just with him in that cell, you can still explore everything about the human condition, and you can do it with colour, and texture, and light.And you’re just working in sound.” H = HostingUnless you’re reading this in 2004 you’re probably going to want to release your Audio Dramas free as a podcast series. Incidentally, if you’re thinking of charging for your shows, have a read of this post.But back to podcasting; a good podcast series needs a good media host behind it. We recommend hosting your shows on Libsyn (use coupon code ADPP for a months free hosting with them). For more information on this, have a listen to ‘Where to host your show’ with Dave Jackson. I = InteractionWhen you’ve been putting out shows for a while you will start to build a fanbase. In that fanbase will be listeners who will actually take the time to get in touch with you, to say hello, and to thank you for entertaining them.Make sure you take time to interact with these listeners. Ask them if they make a show themselves, and if you can have a listen to it. Find out more about each listener and become friends with them. You will start small, so take the opportunity to build these relationships while you can. This will create a loyal band of listeners who will share and promote your content for years to come. J = JargonAudio production and writing are the two towers of Audio Drama. Both are absolutely bursting with jargon, terms you’ve probably never heard before, terms that sound extremely complex. You won’t learn everything overnight. In fact, you won’t learn everything in five, or even ten years. Don’t try to master everything at once. Pick and choose your battles, work at them, and absorb information in a slow and patient manner.The internet is full of great tutorials and resources, and there are many excellent books on writing and audio production. Be wary of information overload. Don’t read three books in a row when you’ve yet to take action on a single thing mentioned in the first one. You’ll just be filling up your short term memory with information that will soon be discarded or forgotten. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint. K = Kbps, Hz, & File TypesSo anyway, here’s some jargon. Whilst you should record as, or request all your audio material in WAV form, you will want to mix down the final version and release it as an Mp3. This makes it a smaller, more practical size to be downloaded by people all over the world.When you mix down your finished show as an Mp3 you’ll be asked to set the ‘kilobits per second’ (Kbps) of your file. To put this simply, the higher the rate, the higher the sound quality, but also the bigger the size of the file (remember, people need to download these).128kbps is considered ‘CD quality’ – you can go higher than that if you like, but we’d advise against going any lower. This is a good level to shoot for if you’re releasing content through a podcast feed. You can always sell or give away copies with higher rates (256 or 320kbps) as premium content too.On top of that, you’ll also hear sampling frequencies like 44100Hz and 48000Hz being bandied about. Again, higher means better with these numbers, but shoot for 44100Hz with your final mix, for the same size/download reasons we’ve already covered. L = Loudness/LevelsThere’s a long running debate in the audio/podcasting community about how loud things should be. The most important thing to keep in mind initially though is how loud your loudest sound is in relation to your quietest. Your levels and loudness should all be in proportion to each other, and work together as a finished piece.Nobody should ever have to touch the volume button when listening to your show, so if you have a huge explosion, and a scene with two characters whispering, bring them as close together as you can in the mixing stage.For more information on this, Kbps, and more, check out ‘Loudness, bit rates, and audio production’ M = MusicAlongside dialogue and sound effects, music is an integral part of your soundscape, and a powerful storytelling tool. There are some great Creative Commons licensed resources out there that you can use without permission (always check the terms of each license when selecting a track, and remember to credit the composer) but one disadvantage of this is that you’ll hear the same music tracks again and again in different Audio Dramas.If you want to add that extra dimension of individuality to your story, try hooking up with or hiring a composer who would have the ability to custom score your production. For more on this, check out ‘Composing music for Audio Drama’ and ‘Working with composers’ N = NarrationYes you can use a narrator in your show, many great Audio Dramas do. But try to resist relying too heavily on this ‘crutch’ of allowing a disembodied voice to tell the listener things you can create for them using your sound effects, music, and dialogue.Use the vibrant story world to fill gaps with vital story detail, those snippets of background conversation. The TV or radio playing a news broadcast under the conversation of two characters. The trainee or apprentice being told the ins and outs of the company he or she has just joined.
