Send us a Text Message. We continue our conversation with Richard Summers, a theoretical biologist and emeritus professor at the University of Mississippi, to learn more about his career journey. Richard's first science spark moment hit him very clearly when he was a young high schooler– he experienced first hand a lunar eclipse with his friends and this experience instilled in him a wonder for the natural world and the interconnectivity of all things. As a high school student, however, his mind was not focused yet on a potential career path; he just wanted to be cool. Once Richard entered college, he dedicated his time to find a suitable career path and spent weeks reading countless books in the college library. After reading hundreds of pages, Richard was still undecided. But he came to a wonderful conclusion: “I did realize one thing. I was limited in my understanding of what was in any of those books only by the amount of mathematics I could understand." This drive to fill in the gaps of his knowledge led Richard to pursue a degree in mathematics with a minor in physical chemistry. From his undergraduate coursework, Richard also gained an appreciation for the role of the observer within biology and this inspired him to go to medical school. His first week in medical school, however, came as a shock, when he realized there were no equations in his anatomy textbooks. After Richard graduated medical school, he had a full career as a doctor and academic. Although he has written many peer-reviewed articles throughout that time, it was not until much later in life that he considered writing books to share his ideas with broader audiences. When Richard reflects back on the many influential mentors who impacted his journey, he is grateful for two mentors he had as a post-doc after medical school. His mentors helped him to understand how to think and reason, which are lessons he carries even to this day. Now that he is retired, Richard notes that the best and worst thing about retirement is waking up and having to decide what to do everyday. Currently his family and grandchildren help him to fill the time and truly feel fulfilled in life. Listen to the episode to hear more!In this episode, Richard will share with us:The defining moments that inspired his scientific pursuitsThe impact of mentorship in developing a new way of thinking about the worldWhat to look forward to once you reach retirement You can find Richard's latest book here: Science as Natural Philosophy and Finding our Place in the UniverseReach out to Richard by email: rsummers@umc.edu If you enjoyed this episode, also be sure to check out: From Post doc to Assistant Professor: The Journey Reach out to Fatu:www.linkedin.com/in/fatubmTwitter: @thee_fatu_band LoveSciencePodcast@gmail.com Reach out to Shekerah:www.linkedin.com/in/shekerah-primus and LoveSciencePodcast@gmail.com Music from Pixabay: Future Artificial Intelligence Technology 130 by TimMoorMusic from https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Holmes: Hotshot by ScottHolmesMusic

Send us a Text Message. In this episode of We Love Science, Fatu and Shekerah explore a world that few modern-day scientists have explored, the intersection of science and philosophy. Today we are speaking with Dr. Richard Summers, a theoretical biologist and emeritus professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His career spans from chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine to vice chancellor for research. Richard has also led cutting-edge research to understand how the human body responds to zero-gravity environments, and has even worked directly with NASA. Throughout his career, between his lab research and academic leadership positions, Richard has co-authored more than 300 publications and books. His most recent book is “Science as Natural Philosophy and Finding Our Place in the Universe”. This book explores the rich history of the origins of science as a way of creating our worldview and understanding our place, as humans, in the world–natural philosophy, as it used to be called. The origin story of science is not only about how we as humans observe and experience the world; interestingly, it can also be deeply influenced by religious perspectives, especially during times in history when religious authorities strongly influenced what was accepted in broader society. “We think of science, philosophy, and religion as being completely separate and conflicting schools of thought. My book connects the dots between the scientific perspective and those of philosophy and religion–on a broad scale,” explains Richard. An overarching theme of all three is to have a better experience and understanding of our world. When it comes to writing, Richard believes that good writing just has to flow, and this means writing can be slow, arduous, and often frustrating. However, this also means that it's important to sit and try every day. Listen to the episode to learn more about Richard's work and his book. Tune in to hear Richard explain:The evolution of science from observation to experimentationWhat it means to think of science as a natural philosophy The surprising interconnectedness between science, philosophy, and religionThe strong Mississippi tradition of StorytellingWhat it takes to write a good book about scienceYou can find Richard's latest book here:Science as Natural Philosophy and Finding Our Place in the UniverseReach out to Richard: rsummers@umc.edu If you enjoyed this episode, also be sure to check out:Ep 8: The Pen is Mightier than the Pipette: The WorkEp 23: The Accidental Discovery of Penicillin Reach out to Fatu:www.linkedin.com/in/fatubmTwitter: @thee_fatu_band LoveSciencePodcast@gmail.com Reach out to Shekerah:www.linkedin.com/in/shekerah-primus and LoveSciencePodcast@gmail.com Music from Pixabay: Future Artificial Intelligence Technology 130 by TimMoorMusic from https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Holmes: Hotshot by ScottHolmesMusic

It's 2002. I've just come up with a brilliant idea with someone I met at a networking event. We're in the right place at the right time as this idea involves the creation of a software application that's never been done before. We get the greenlight to develop this software application for TED. But there's a problem... As a technologist who has written books on Flash programming, I have a vision for how this might work. Yet I'm not a designer. However, I happen to be running a technology conference and know that the best designers and developers in the world are right there! So we ask for the best to come on board and help this idea take shape by creating an email titled, “Want to Play?” in the subject line. Eight weeks later, we unveil this back-of-the-napkin idea to HUGE success! And it is 100% because of the design, interaction with the software, and what the experience felt like for clients. My special guest today, Ryan Ford, has over two decades of experience as a professional, award-winning designer influencing the stories of products, companies, and brands. And today on the Storytelling School Podcast, he joins me to talk about how the world of design and the world of storytelling intertwine. So if you're curious to know: What's the difference between people's perception of design and its reality? How can you cater your story to different audiences when pitching ideas? How does the design process itself parallel storytelling? Then tune in as we cover it all. And along the way, you'll be treated to stories involving anime, outcasts, an ice cream cone-licking sloth, and one movie studio's ability to drive your emotions better than most businesses you'll encounter. What you will learn in this episode: Why design and storytelling go hand-in-hand Why you should look at audience first, then story second How you can successfully reposition a long-told story with a simple change Who is Ryan? Ryan Ford is an accomplished designer and leader with over 24 years of design experience. He's built design teams and helped businesses that have had significant cultural impact such as Chime, Deviantart, and Crunchyroll. Among his many other acknowledgements, he received recognition from the California Senate for contributions to eco sustainability through design. (Badriya - Poetry) In this episode, I had the honour to have Badriya as my guest. She shared with me her interest in poetry as her hobby. Definition: Poetry (derived from the Greek poiesis, "making"), also called verse, is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language − such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre − to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, a prosaic ostensible meaning. A poem is a literary composition, written by a poet, using this principle. Wikipedia contributors. (2022, July 6). Poetry. In Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. I'm in a San Francisco hotel room trying to dress up as a geisha for Halloween in 2006. I've already made many attempts to apply my own makeup, and it's just not working out. I resemble Batman more than a geisha, so I decide to let a professional makeup artist do it instead. Off to the mall department store I go and my husband Mark comes along to see me undergo this transformation. And I swear, once the pro is done with me I look like I could've stepped out of the 1800s of Japan. We go on to have a great time that night and arrive back in our hotel room. I'm looking at my phone at around 2 o'clock in the morning when I come across something surprising. Unbeknownst to me, Mark has posted a behind-the-scenes picture of me in the makeup chair. And I don't look good at all! In fact, I look like a zombie. So I ask him to take the photo down immediately. But remember: this is back in 2006 when Twitter is still new. You can't delete photos off it yet. Mark is trying to tell me this but I'm in a bit of a panic, thinking there has to be a way to remove this picture. Somehow, a way gets found because it's gone three hours later. Marriage saved! Now, my guest today, may or may not have as dramatic a story to tell as that. But Violeta Meyners does impressively create real-life modern-day beauty through both the lens and lashes and helps women feel and look beautiful at the same time. In this episode, she answers questions like: How does she do it differently than other entrepreneurs? What was the narrative that she, as a woman in her industry, wanted to change? And how can you establish a connection with clients? What you will learn in this episode: What's necessary to capture the story of beauty within images Why over-curating curbs your ability to uplevel your storytelling How perfection brings out your imperfections Who is Violeta? The beauty business and dreamy ocean living wasn't always the case for Violeta Meyners. She came from next to nothing, arriving in the U.S. from Romania with no friends or family and less than $500 in her pocket. All she had was big dreams, a burning desire to turn them into reality, and a will to do whatever it took. While going to school, she worked four jobs, transmuted back-on-forth from jobs to school by foot, and ate for nearly $1.25 a day. Violeta freelanced as a makeup artist for a decade until six years ago when she considered how her approach to makeup artistry made women feel. She wanted to capture their beauty, freshness, and empowerment in a permanent way, using the lens. That's when she took her passion for photography and turned it into a full-fledged career where she now helps women own and celebrate their beauty and worthiness. Megan Chng was always told by doctors that dancing can be damaging to one's body and that injuries are inevitable. One not-so-fine-day, she sprained her ankle, badly. She was advised not to dance anymore or risk aggravating her injuries. As a theatre practitioner, that was naturally disheartening to hear. Yet, Megan has kept dancing and performing since. And she's done so, without picking up any serious injuries. On this episode, Megan joins us to share how fitness training changed her life, and why her perspective of success always changes. Everyone is deserving of compassion. However, it is okay to be spiritually selective and appreciate from a distance without judgment and callousness. We don't have to intertwine with everyone's life. Instead, we can direct our sensitivity to our friends and family, those closest to us. Unlike our Supreme Best Friend, we have a limited amount of compassion to give. We don't have to act on everything. Sometimes the best thing for us to do with spiritual realizations is to sit down, reflect, contemplate, and surrender the greater plan to God.
AP correspondent Shelley Adler reports on the D-Day remembrance in Normandy.
At age 22, Jonathon Haddad had become the youngest banker promoted to director at Quicken Loans. By 27, after helping build out their online chat service, Jonathon was promoted to Vice President. Now, at age 30, having transitioned from retail-to-wholesale over 2.5 years ago, Jonathon leads a team of 80 employees and is using his marketing and SEO expertise to bring in 250+ organic leads a month. Jonathon admits that leaving Quicken was not all “rainbows and butterflies” but at the end of the day, they did what was best for business. Utilizing the AIME and Brokers Are Better platforms, Jonathon wants to share his expertise and leadership style with the entirety of the Wholesale Channel. Jonathon wants to give back to other brokers and believes this to be the ultimate opportunity to do so. He wants to teach those green to the industry that the broker space is the place to be and make sure that everyone knows that brokers are here to stay. WIth custom drip campaigns, proper data-tracking efforts and a $300,000 budget for his marketing team's salaries alone, Jonathon's major push is for the combination of marketing efforts and realtor referral relationships. His head of marketing, a former content creator for ESPN, the NFL, and the Superbowl, leads an 8-person team of videographers, editors, and SEO experts. Operating under the idea that “you don't know what you don't know,” Jonathon and his brokerage's marketing team welcome new realtor partners by offering to help them with any weaknesses in their marketing plans. Instead of just getting a cup of coffee with a realtor, Jonathon comes to the table with multiple marketing packets for different types of realtors and finds the best marketing plan to match each realtor's weaknesses. Jonathon's greatest passion within the broker space is leadership. He is addicted to helping others and, in this podcast, shares advice for both fellow trainers and their trainees; Give more, expect less, and adjust your training style to fit the trainee, not the other way around. Provide visual, auditory, and hands-on training, and do your best to give everything you can to every employee, realtor, and homeowner. Knowing guidelines and how to close loans is simply the barrier to entry into this industry. If you don't go above and beyond to set yourself apart you're going to fall behind. You have to show up each and every day expecting roadblocks and speed bumps, so don't just prepare, but embrace these hardships. “My life has not been easy, it does not matter,” Jonathon shares. Independent originators have options. They have full control of their destiny. That's what makes brokers better. I'm flipping the TV channels when I see something that makes me have a flashback to my childhood. I remember standing next to my best friend Jeff Babko in the backyard near a kiddie pool. We loved putting on skits and performing at his house as kids. Then, we got older and lost touch as I got into softball and moved to Hawaii for college while he studied music in Miami. So imagine my surprise when I stopped on Jimmy Kimmel's show one day and saw a very familiar face. It was Jeff! I had to invite him on the show for a walk down memory lane. And he's got plenty of stories to share about his musical career and travels, working with other musicians, and especially collaborating with comedians like Steve Martin and Martin Short. We talk all about it, as well as performance (whether it's music, improv, or storytelling) and key elements necessary for making a connection with your audience. What you will learn in this episode: What role music plays in comedy and storytelling Why your audience matters in every performance How you can best experience your own storytelling Who is Jeff? Born and raised in southern California, Jeff Babko has lived on the West Coast for his entire career of television, film, and live performances. After graduating from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, he began touring internationally with Julio Iglesias, then joined the group, Toto, to tour Europe. He's also recorded and toured with musical stars like Smokey Robinson, Yo-Yo Ma, Frank Ocean, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, and John Mayer, among many others. On the TV side of things, Jeff's most significant work has to be the past 18 years as the musical arranger, co-composer, and house band member of Jimmy Kimmel Live. But he's always kept his toes dipped in comedy too. His TV work actually began on Martin Short's syndicated talk show at the turn of the century. In fact, he still regularly performs with Short and Steve Martin. Jeff has also been on the Emmy award-winning Wayne Brady daytime show and even worked as an Emmy show composer, arranger, and orchestra member for three years. People have enjoyed his performances at the 2012 Democratic National Convention and the White House for the Obamas and the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel. His work is even featured on the musical scores of several movies like Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, and Pixar's Luca. But today, Jeff and his wife, violinist Songa Lee, produce music from their studio in the San Fernando Valley and regularly perform as a duo in Paso Robles, CA Links and Resources: Jeff Babko Storytelling School Website @storytellingschool on Instagram @storytellingSchool on Facebook
In the summer of 1980, Dorothy Jane Scott would disappear into the California night without a trace. There is nothing more chilling than an unsolved case where a person seemingly vanishes into thin air. Intertwine that with a self-proclaimed killer committed to haunting the aftermath and you have the stuff nightmares are made of. But how do you solve a crime that wasn't even a crime while it was happening? Do all secrets fray with time? Let us set each detail out like a giant puzzle on a dining room table, in the hopes that a whole image emerges as we examine all the ways it may fit together.
