Rewind: Alfred Johnson of Crux on Creating a Clean Energy Tax Credit Marketplace

Consensus in Conversation

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2024 47:01

Just over one year ago, the IRS published its final rules and guidance on the transferability of clean energy tax credits. Not only did transferability solve a major flaw in the Inflation Reduction Act's plan to support clean energy infrastructure development, but, as many founders correctly foresaw, it was about to create an entirely new financial market. This week, we're re-releasing our conversation with one of those visionary founders: Alfred Johnson, CEO and Co-Founder of Crux Climate, in advance of next week's live follow-up with Alfred at American Clean Power Association's 2024 CLEANPOWER expo where we'll look in on the impact of the clean energy tax credit market in its first year. Crux is a software startup revolutionizing clean energy tax credit management, and Alfred is well-suited to break down clean energy tax incentives, share founders' lessons, and talk about the rapidly growing clean energy market, which is expected to receive $3 trillion in investments over the next decade.A Stanford grad, Alfred Johnson worked for the U.S. Treasury Department and BlackRock before launching his first software company with co-founder Allen Kramer. That company was acquired in 2020, leaving Alfred and Allen ready for their next adventure. And, in 2023, they launched Crux Climate to develop online solutions for organizations to buy and sell clean energy tax credits, helping ensure that capital goes to the impactful startups that need it to scale, and that credits go to those that can actually use them. Hear Alfred Johnson talk about the founding idea for Crux, how to find an ideal co-founder, and why he thinks tax credit transferability is one of the most influential government policy choices ever made.Episode Highlights00:00 Conor introduces ACP CLEANPOWER 2024, Alfred, and Crux03:04 D.C. upbringing, Stanford, and the intersection of private and public sectors12:27 The startup bug and launching Crux Climate18:03 Crux's core business, finding buyers and sellers, and building scale 26:16 The tax credit marketplace, a new asset class, and the near-term future32:02 ESG, aligning purpose with profits, and creating sustainable impact 38:51 Advice for young entrepreneurs, leaving a legacy, and finding motivation45:57 Where to learn more and end creditsIf you liked this episode, stay tuned for next week's live follow-up with Alfred, and in the meantime, listen next to Jonathan Goldberg of Carbon DirectMore on Alfred Johnson and Crux Climate:cruxclimate.comlinkedin.com/company/cruxclimate linkedin.com/in/alfredjohnson01Connect with Conor Gaughan on linkedin.com/in/ckgone and threads.net/@ckgone Have questions, or a great idea for a potential guest? Hello, my name is Jonathan Goldberg and I'm the creator of the Land Whale Murders, which is a madcap comedy podcast following the adventures of bumbling scientists turned private investigators as they unravel a sticky sweet mystery in Gilded Age New York. Releasing bi-weekly the Land Whale Murders is a fast-paced alternate history comedy podcast in the spirit of Mel Brooks and Monty Python. The show is inspired by real events and people but with the silliness and absurdity cranked up to 11 making for a surreal and amusing audio experience. The show explores issues of capitalism, self expression, love, loss, fear and hope through a zany world with plenty of weird characters. The second season picks up where the first left off, but it also a stand alone story that can be enjoyed by any listener. So we'd love to present for you … season 2 episode 1. On the path to net zero, carbon credits are a critical instrument in a broad toolkit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some say carbon credits should, first, go to nature-based solutions to protect biodiversity before investing in industrial carbon reductions or removals. It was great meeting Jonathan over the phone.  He has a very interesting story.   Here's a little background:Jonathan grew up in a Messianic Jewish home. But he made his own choice to follow Yeshua. One evening, while on a pre-army trip with a friend in 1981 – Jonathan was curious to know: If there was a God, why the world was in such a mess? The answer, when it came was quiet and simple… As he sincerely internalized his guilt in the mess, he was overwhelmed by the understanding that the great Creator-of-the-universe loves him wants him and KNOWS him – And so, that night, he gave his Maker EVERYTHING – whoever he thought he was; art, sports – EVERYTHING – he gave Him the “keys” to his life. He put his faith in Yeshua and handed his life over to Him, as his Master. He was AMAZINGLY transformed!Jonathan and Faith Goldberg serve in Haifa Israel.

South Africa's employment equity laws are set for a major shake up. The National Council of Provinces recently passed the Employment Equity Amendment Bill. The Bill is in its final stage of promulgation as it has been sent to the President for signing. The Bill will amend the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998. The bill promises a shake-up of the country's existing employment equity laws and will give the minister of Employment and Labour the power to speed up transformation in specific business sectors. It does this by empowering the minister to set sector-specific employment equity targets across most of South Africa's major industries. But many businesses say this will have the opposite effect and indeed retard growth and employment However, mere compliance "box- ticking" with these requirements will not produce an inclusive, thriving economy with sustainable empowerment. The precursor to this is quality education and skills development and of a course economic growth To discuss the EE Bill Michael Avery is joined by The Chief Director of labour relations for the Department of Employment and Labour Thembinkosi Mkalipi; CEO of Global Business Solutions, Jonathan Goldberg, a leading voice in Labour Law, Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment and Gerhard Papenfus, CEO of The National employers Association, NEASA…

In this Documentary Photography Review podcast we talk with Jonathan Goldberg about his two projects centred on Transition Towns/the Transition Network.  Transition Towns are a response to issues such as climate change, peak oil and economic instability and centre around creating resilient and self-reliant communities. One project broadly documents the activities of the Transition Town in his neighbourhood, Kilburn, whilst the other focuses on Grow Heathrow, a part of ‘Transition Heathrow’. Grow Heathrow are a group of people are living in a collective, self-reliant community out at Heathrow. We discuss Jonathan’s personal interests in environmental and social issues, his experience of staying cold nights with the community living at Heathrow and reflect on the challenges of documenting a community in transition. We also discuss his evolution as a photographer and recent success using film; Jonathan’s ‘Shake the Tree’ won the 2013 Environmental Photographer of the Year prize for Best Short Film.
