In September, The River cafe will be 36 years old. One of the pleasures of having a restaurant for so long is watching the second generation—now even a third generation—of our early customers grow up. Adwoa Aboah's parents, Charles and Camilla, have been part of the River Cafe Family since we opened. And Adwoa has gone from a child eating pasta, butter and cheese, and then playing on the garden outside, to only one of the world's foremost fashion models, but a formidable woman focussed on the political and social issues so relevant now, especially to women. After her own struggles with mental health, she founded the organisation Gurls Talk —a safe space for girls to access resources, share experiences, create community, and feel less alone. It is both moving and exciting to have her here today, past and present, child and adult, friend and family. "Everybody is just trying to be cool, but there's no such thing as cool," said Karissa Mitchell, Senior Beauty and Fashion Editor of Teen Vogue after hosting a panel of changemakers in the beauty industry. Karissa said she put the panel together "...to inspire the teenagers that are coming up in today's society that you're fine just the way you are. And just don't panic when it comes to beauty. Everybody's having the same struggle, even the people you're trying to impress." The theme of this year's summit was "celebrate, collaborate, create!" and it featured some of the industry's favorite creators, changemakers, and ceiling-breakers. Following the midterm elections, our digital producer and "Senior Gen-Z Correspondent" Zachary Bynum stopped by the Summit for some post-election takeaways on politics, culture, fashion, and self-care. Carli Whitwell is an award-winning journalist with over 10 years experience. She started her career working in newspapers, then moved into the magazine world. She worked at Hello! Canada while freelancing for national publications including Chatelaine and Canadian Health & Lifestyle. In 2015, she moved to ELLE Canada where she served as acting health and beauty editor, eventually stepping into the role of managing editor in early 2018. This past July, she started at Refinery29 Canada as Deputy Editor. With a background that spans news, beauty, fashion, culture and lifestyle, Whitwell’s resume is varied, but with one crucial consistency: She always strives to empower women. She’s interviewed some of the biggest names in fashion, beauty and celebrity circles, including Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, Adwoa Aboah, Elle Fanning, Jessica Alba, Mandy Moore, Behati Prinsloo, Lana Condor and more. Niki and Carli chat like old friends and Carli opens up about finding her career in journalism, it’s perfection.
Today's guest is someone I fell in platonic love with by reading her work. Julia Samuel is one of the country's leading psychotherapists but she is also well-known as an author. Her first book, Grief Works, was a Sunday Times bestseller and is routinely cited as one of the most helpful and compassionate books on bereavement you will ever read. Her second book, This Too Shall Pass, Stories of Change, Crisis and Hopeful Beginnings, was published just before lockdown and could not have been a more insightful guide to the uncertain times we all found ourselves in. Adwoa Aboah called it 'one of the most valuable books I've ever read', while my hero Esther Perel, said it was 'a remarkable portrayal of how we need to understand ourselves to truly heal'. She joins me to talk about failing exams, failed jobs, her self-perceived failures as a mother and the impossibility of putting our emotions through a logical system. We also touch on imposter syndrome, quitting things you aren't good at, being a twin (she is one!), her close friendship with the late Princess Diana (plus what kind of godmother she is to Prince George) as well as the discomfort she feels talking about herself, rather than being the one to ask questions of a client. I am so honoured to have Julia on the podcast. Her integrity and intelligence, forged through 30 years as a working therapist, shine through absolutely everything she does. Her work has been crucially important to me personally and I'm sure it will be to you too. As Julia says: 'We are brought up thinking life is an upward journey, a stairway to a better place, each step higher than the last. but the reality is far less certain: there are ups and downs, and the only certainty that exists is that there will be change.' * Julia's latest book, This Too Shall Pass, is out now and available to order here. * I've written a new book! Failosophy: A Handbook For When Things Go Wrong is out in October. It's a practical, inspirational and reassuring guide to the seven principles of failure I've developed since doing this podcast. Packed full of contributions from loads of former guests, as well as listener stories, it is also beautifully illustrated by Paul Blow and I would love it if you wanted to pre-order a signed copy here. * How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Naomi Mantin and Chris Sharp. Russell and Robert meet Edward Enninful OBE, editor-in-chief of British Vogue. Over the past two and a half years as editor-in-chief of the famed publication, he has helped shape a new vision for fashion media — not just in the UK, but globally — where he has placed a “diversity of perspective” at its core.Enninful has described his vision for British Vogue as “about being inclusive. It’s not just the colour of your skin but the diversity of perspective.” He has made art a priority including interviews and features with artists as varied as Lubaina Himid, Steve McQueen (who is Vogue's Contributing Editor), Luchita Hurtado, Celia Hempton, Anthea Hamilton, Lorna Simpson, Mark Bradford, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Frank Bowling, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Howardena Pindell, Bridget Riley, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Rosalind Nashashibi, Maggi Hambling, Huguette Caland, Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry and Rachel Whiteread. He has also profiled curators and museum directors such as Zoé Whitley (Chisenhale), Maria Balshaw (Tate) as well as writer Zadie Smith and photographers including Nadine Ijewere, Tyler Mitchell and Campbell Addy. In 2019, Enninful presented the Turner Prize, in an historic year where all four nominees won the prize.Ghanaian-born Enninful began his career as fashion director of British youth culture magazine i-D at age 18, the youngest ever to have been named an editor at a major international fashion title. After moving to London with his parents and six siblings at a young age, Enninful was scouted as a model on the train at 16 and briefly modelled for Arena and i-D magazines including being shot by artist Wolfgang Tillmans.Inspired by London’s club scene in the 1980s, Enninful’s work during this period captured the frenetic energy and creative zeitgeist of the time. It was also during this time that he befriended many of his future fashion collaborators, including Steven Meisel, David Smins, Pat McGrath, Craig McDean, Mario Sorrenti, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. For British Vogue, Enninful ’s covers have consistently featured strong women who promote messages of empowerment: Stella Tennant, Oprah Winfrey, Adwoa Aboah, Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, not to mention his September 2019 edition guest-edited by Meghan Markle HRH Duchess of Sussex, which featured 15 trailblazing female changemakers including Greta Thunberg and Jane Fonda on the cover.Enninful was awarded an OBE for his services to diversity in the fashion industry, and in 2018 he received the Media Award in Honour of Eugenia Sheppard from the CFDA in recognition of his career-long contribution to the fashion industry.Follow @Edward_Enninful and @BritishVogue. It's the first ever episode of Telegraph Fashion Unzipped -- all the fashion desk chat, none of the deadlines. Emily Cronin, Bethan Holt, Charlie Gowans-Eglinton and Lisa Armstrong dive into The Fashion Awards, discussing the night's best-dressed guests, why the world needs more sequins right now, and what we can learn from Stella McCartney, Adwoa Aboah, Virgil Abloh and more of the night's big winners.
It's been a great week for sexism. Swedish model and artist Arvida Bystrom was threatened with rape, after she appeared in an Adidas advert with hairy legs; a senior writer at Vice's women's channel, Broadly, was fired after leaked e-mails revealed that he had been lobbying alt-right ‘media personality' Milo Yiannapoulos to bully ‘fat feminists'; and then, well, there's Harvey Weinstein. The 65-year-old American producer, considered to be one of, if not the most powerful man in Hollywood, has been fired from his own company, dumped by his wife and dispatched to ‘sex addiction rehab' (obviously) after it was sensationally revealed by The New York Times and a dizzying further array of publications, that he had sexually harassed dozens of women in Hollywood, from A-Listers such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, to journalists, assistants and models. You'll never look at a pot plant in the same way again…. How was Weinstein's behaviour tolerated, as an open secret, for so long? Why are women expected to come forward, more than men? Was he fired because he sexually harassed women - or because the public found out? And, as we discuss at length, will the demise of Harvey Weinstein finally lead to the dismantling of the systemic sexism upon which Hollywood's very foundations are built? Time can only tell. On a trivial note, did you know pesto pasta has more salt than a McDonald's burger? Pandora's happy, veggies not so much.
