Leila Slimani is a highly acclaimed French-Moroccan author who has written some absolutely fantastic novels over the last few years. She burst into the mainstream consciousness when she won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in France in 2016 for her second novel Chanson Douce, which was translated into English in 2018 as The Perfect Nanny in the US, or Lullaby in the UK. She followed this up with non-fiction work as well as a fantastic trilogy which is two-thirds finished, called  “Le Pays des Autres” (The Country of Others) in which the second novel “Regardez-nous danser” (Watch Us Dance) has just been translated into English. In today's episode, Leïla and I discuss, as always, the four books which have most influenced her writing – spanning all the way from early childhood literary beginnings, all the way to some very contemporary picks.

Imagine having an idea so engaging that you make Anjelica Huston want to talk about Tupperware. Well, hello journalist Annabelle Hirsch, whose book, A History of Women in 101 Objects, is a fascinating walk through female history via, well, 101 objects.  The book came out last October and is well worth your eyes, but if you like to get your ears involved and the voices of Helena Bonham Carter, Leila Slimani, Olivia Colman, Margaret Atwood and Meera Syal, to name but a few, tickle your pickle, then the audiobook of Annabelle's work is a thing of joy. Annabelle's chatting to our Mick in this week's podzine about how objects – some everyday, some remarkable – can provide a deep dive into women's lives throughout history.  There's more herstory this week, as Jen's been chatting to documentary makers Rachel Ramsay and Victoria Gregory about COPA 71, their new feature documentary in which the pioneering footballers in Mexico's unofficial 1971 Women's World Cup tell their remarkable story. It was a tournament that witnessed record crowds, but has been largely written out of sporting history and the stories of it – and indeed the stories behind the making of this documentary about it – are compelling.  There's more compelling this week, in the form of Glenn Close and John Malkovich, doing some magnificent work in Hannah's Rated or Dated pick: 1989's Dangerous Liaisons. Any excuse for Mick's French-via-Delboy accent, eh? Plus, drop shots, cheap shots and poor form all round in the Bush Telegraph.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

My guest today is the prize winning author, Leila Slimani. Leila was the first Moroccan woman to win France's prestigious Prix Goncourt for her spine-tingling novel Lullaby. She has since written three more novels, including Watch Us Dance, the second in a Moroccan trilogy loosely based on her own family history, and two works of non fiction including The Scent of Flowers At Night, about art and motherhood and daughterhood.Leila was born in Rabat in Morocco and moved to Paris at 17, where she stayed until lockdown drove her out of the city. As it did so many people. She and her family now live in Lisbon.Leila joined me to talk about growing up across cultures and building her own identity, How women's lives have changed across generations - and how they haven't ... - and the mystery of how your life ends up exactly like your parents, no matter what you do to avoid it! We also discussed how she worked out what sort of woman she wanted to be, how to teach your daughters not to be afraid, the power of I don't know, and why she really - REALLY - just wants a break! I'm guessing you'll know how that feels...If you enjoyed this episode you might also like the episodes featuring Elif Shafak and Isabel Allende. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Scent of Flowers at Night and Watch Us Dance by Leila Slimani, and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Productions. In 2016, French-Moroccan novelist Leila Slimani won the Prix Goncourt for her provocative thriller, The Perfect Nanny, which was named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review and is currently being adapted into a limited series starring Nicole Kidman. Slimani's 2020 novel, In the Country of Others, was the first of a planned trilogy – an intergenerational family saga set in Morocco after the Second World War. The forthcoming second volume, Watch Us Dance, takes place during the late 1960s and early '70s, a time when political repression and social optimism were coming head to head.

In Watch Us Dance—Leïla Slimani's effervescent new novel—we rejoin the Belhaj family in 1968 a dozen years into the life on an independent Morocco. Amine and Mathilde have completed their journey from peasant farmers to paid-up members of the local bourgeoisie. Their daughter Aicha is in Strasbourg training to be a Doctor. They have just built a private swimming pool, and Amine is exploiting his position of a man of power to have extramarital affairs across the city. But these are turbulent times: students and workers, in cities all over the world, are in revolt, the consumer society is being born, and the Americans are preparing to put a man on the moon. And then there are the hippies, many of whom are washing up on the shores around in Essaouira hoping to expand their minds, and avoid the draft, during their stay in this Moroccan port.Watch Us Dance, throbs with life and colour, and Leila Slimani navigates between the macro and the micro with extraordinary authorial dexterity. It's a novel that somehow sweeps readers up in the tides of history, while never shifting their attention from the minutiae of grievances, but also affections, that criss-cross every family.Buy Watch Us Dance: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/product/7955500/watch-us-danceLeïla Slimani is the first Moroccan woman to win France's most prestigious literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, which she won for Lullaby.

Mínimo Necesario te invita a conversar. Today I'm excited to welcome my first guest from Scandinavia: Danish publisher Marie Vinter. Marie is founder and publisher of Vinter Forlag, which she started last fall. Among the different Scandinavian markets, the Danish publishing market in particular has seen many changes in recent years. Imprints were discontinued, publishers merged or were bought by publishing groups, streaming saw an impressive and quite aggressive growth, and several new publishing houses were created, both independently like Vinter Forlag, and under the umbrella of publishing groups. We're taking a deep dive into the Danish publishing market, and we'll discuss the impact of the pandemic of course, but we also talk about how Marie came to found her own publishing house (spoiler alert: it involves one of my favorite authors!), the rise of audio and much more... Show notes Marie's book recommendations: - The Discomfort of Evening by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld - Living Autobiography Book Series by Deborah Levy About Marie: Marie Vinter's publishing career spans more than 20 years working with both bestseller-driven publishers and smaller literary publishers. She began at Borgen Publishers, an independent art-loving publishing house, where she stayed for 10 years, first as editor of poetry and French literature, and then as editorial director and co-founder of commercial imprint S&S (publishing Devil wears Prada). From 2014-2019 Marie was senior editor at Rosinante, one of Denmark's leading publishing houses, building their list and acquiring bestselling authors, such as Sally Rooney, Rachel Cusk, Maggie Nelson, Ottessa Moshfegh, Rebecca Solnit, Zadie Smith, and Leila Slimani. In 2020, Marie founded Vinter Forlag, a new independent publishing house dedicated to translated literary fiction and essays. She has taken an active part in the literary scene as board member, festival organizer, co-founder of a magazine and a vibrant live scene, and is always on the lookout for new talented, female voices.

Show Notes: Ursula's review of Guest House for Young Widows, a book about women who joined ISIS, appeared in the last issue of The Point magazine. It references a few other books, such as Dunya Mikhail's  The Beekeeper of Sinjar (which gathers the testimonies of Yazidi women enslaved by ISIS) and David Thomson's The Returned, about French jihadis. Ursula's review of the Moroccan-French author Leila Slimani's latest novel, Le Pays des Autres, will be out soon in the New York Review of books. Slimani's The Perfect Nanny was an international best-seller; her new book is part of a planned historical trilogy set in Morocco. Adel Kamel's long-forgotten, now-remembered classic Malim al-Akbar recently appeared in English as The Magnificent Conman of Cairo. A special section on ArabLit marks the launch. Literary detective Mohamed Shoair is author of the acclaimed 2018 popular history Children of the Alley: The Story of the Forbidden Novel, which follows the story of Naguib Mahfouz's most controversial novel. A chapter of Shoair's book appears online in Samah Selim's translation. Mahfouz talks briefly about the Harafish, his circle of literary friends, in Naguib Mahfouz at Sidi Gaber: Reflections of a Nobel Laureate, 1994-2001, from conversations with Mohamed Salmawy. Albert Cossery was a French writer of Levantine origin, born in Cairo.
