Through his writings, C.S. Lewis emphasized the importance of travel and learning for through these two activities we gain the needed perspective to see life through the lens of "many places" and "many times." In this week's episode, Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing sit down with author's Dr. Alan Snyder and Jamin Metcalf to discuss their recently published book on C.S. Lewis and history, Many Times & Many Places (2023). Does history have a plot or a coherent storyline? Can we read and interpret history? Is every good event attributable to God and every evil event attributable to the sins of men? What is the value of studying history in an age that is enamored with progress and infected with chronological snobbery?

Savant brains are severely compromised. Yet some savants have, as neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran says, "islands of astonishing talent." A few such savants have astonishing musical talents. Others show an awesome ability to replicate what they on paper. Others have amazing mathematical skills. I recently wrote about Savants in the most current edition of 3rd Act Magazine. I explored a set of hyper-activated abilities that seem to explain how savants achieve their super-powers. The list of hyper-skills (suggested by Alan Snyder of the Brain & Mind Centre at the University of Sydney) are all skills possessed by the average human brain. In the article, I suggest that cultivating these set of skills might help those of us with "normal" brains to ramp up our cognitive performance.

Experiences You Should Have Podcast Show Notes Going Crabbing: Interview with Dr. Alan Snyder I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Alan Snyder for this fun episode on crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Snyder was born and raised in Baltimore, MD where both eating and catching crab is part of the culture. Seafood and Old Bay are also in your blood if you're from Baltimore, personally, my 2 favorite things! If you love eating crab, then please read on! Listen to the episode above to get the full experience. Also, check out Dr. Alan Snyder's podcast, Boo's Your Daddy, a 30-minute unscripted podcast where they drink a beer and tell comical stories about life with a game of Trivia. Dr. Alan Snyder eating his Crab with a Natty Boh Beer Experience Crabbing When you go crabbing, it's a lot more complicated than fishing; there is a lot more preparation involved. If you have a boat, you're going to set up a massive line with a buoy, and a cinder block and tie bait on your line every 10-15 feet or so. I know it sounds weird, but the best crab bait is chicken necks. If chicken necks aren't your thing, you can use eel and fish guts as bait. You slowly feed the line over a PVC pipe, the crabs then hold onto the chicken necks, and as the line comes up, you pull the crab up with nets. There are other ways to capture crab: fishing poles, traps, professional crates, etc. You need to make sure based on what state you're in that you have the correct permit and proper size before you capture them, cook them, and eat them. When is the Best Time to go Crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay? You can go crabbing year round on the Chesapeake Bay, but the best time for going crabbing is the end of summer or fall months. Preparing and Cooking Crab When you're preparing crab, fill the bucket or cooler with ice, and put them right side up. It dulls their movement and feeling and makes it easier to cook them. It takes about 20-30 minutes to steam crabs. If there is any blue or green coloring left on the crabs, you'll need to keep cooking them. Alan recommends using beer, rock salt, and plenty of Old Bay Seasoning when steaming! While this post is about east coast crab, here's a video on how to break down a Dungeness Crab (west coast crab). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48WTCnF2rSQ Alan's Favorite Way to Eat Crab Crab Cakes are Alan's favorite way to eat crab. It's 90% crab meat (jumbo lump back fin meat), broiled with an egg, parsley, squirt of yellow mustard, mayo, few ritz crackers with lemon juice and of course Old Bay. Alan is a purist and doesn't like tartar sauce on his crab. If you're a beer drinker and on the East coast, then pop open a Natural Bohemian Beer--Natty Boh beer, is the best drink to have with your crab when in Maryland. When eating crab, make sure you're eating just the meat from the legs and back. Maryland Crab Cakes This crab cake recipe is 90% crab meat and is best eaten wtih a Natural Bohemian Beer and provided by Dr. Alan Snyder 1 lb backfin crab meat1 egg1 tbsp mustard1 tbsp mayo1 tbsp old bay1 tbsp parsley8 Ritz crackers crushed1 tbsp lemon juice Mix together all of the above ingredientsBroil at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes

Warning: I talk a bit about Game of Thrones and some major developments in that story as a comparison to Colony in this episode. If you call yourself a Game of Thrones fan and are not completely caught up (an excuse-less condition), you may want to skip ahead in the podcast when it comes up. This week's episode marks Will Bowman's return to action hero status. I have to admit I was a little concerned when a very desperate Will got his butt kicked in the first episode. After seeing the hold Solomon had over Charlie, plus the scar tissue remnants of Solomon's "lessons", Will's edge returned. With Charlie safe from the local poncho-wearing warlord's retribution, what will Will do? And then there's Katie. Katie. Katie, the woman who can accuse her own sister of not trying very hard to use her politically persuasive boyfriend to Bram released. Never mind that Bram broke one of the cardinal rules of the colony -or- that Maddie's had to basically sell her body to buy Nolan's affections. Katie just calls 'em like she sees 'em, and in this case she saw a real lack of hustle on Maddie's part. I loved watching Maddie verbally kick Katie's ass. Alan Snyder's alive! It looks like his new title may be something more like "Warden Snyder" rather than proxy, but hey! It's not the factory! What's to come next week? I bet Will has to stay in Santa Monica longer than expected to clean up the mess he surely created at Solomon's. What stupid idea will Katie have? She will probably try to enlist someone's help (Jennifer? Broussard?) to try and not only find Bram, but get him out. These are just guesses of course.
Just 10 episodes last year was all it took. We bought in. We invested. We engaged with the Colony community. We even met Ryan Condal. When you go out in a public forum, like a blog, Facebook, what have you, and say you like something, you are also saying some other stuff. What we let into our minds and souls as entertainment is one thing, but what we tell others we like is another. Coming out all public-like in support of a show in its freshman season can be fun... until its time for the Season 2 premiere. Then we're all like, "please don't suck. please don't suck." We have good news for you. Colony Season 2 looks like it is off to a STRONG start. Where last season, we were left wondering about our characters' backstories, this episode we got mostly backstory. BUT. Some of the details we learn only lead to more questions (funny how good writers can do that, huh?). All the previous stuff I wrote I used a collective "we" to denote how Caroline and I feel about the show. This next bit is all Paul. Alan Snyder, the once and future Proxy, is beginning to steal the show for me. Will Bowman has the action hero stuff and that's cool, but Snyder is cunning and highly adaptable. He had me at, "She stays." Direct Link to iTunes! One of the people below is on television, the other is a podcaster.
