This week, we're diving into one of the fastest-growing corners of retirement planning: alternative investments inside IRAs. From rental properties and private equity to precious metals and crypto, self-directed IRAs are giving investors more freedom to move beyond traditional Wall Street assets — but just because you can hold these investments inside an IRA doesn't always mean you should, especially when strict IRS rules, hidden tax traps, and costly compliance mistakes can completely disqualify your retirement account. We'll explain how these accounts really work, what investments are actually allowed, and why many investors underestimate the risks. Then, we turn to the semiconductor sector, where the AI boom has ignited what some analysts are calling a full-scale market “melt-up.” Chipmakers like Broadcom, Micron, and even Intel have surged as investors pour money into anything tied to artificial intelligence. We'll discuss whether the explosive rally is supported by fundamentals and how semiconductor demand is reshaping the global economy. And finally, we ask the question many investors are quietly wondering: Are we witnessing a technological revolution — or another dot-com-style bubble? We'll compare today's AI-driven rally to the market environment of 2000, explore why the Magnificent 7 continue to dominate investor attention, and discuss whether confidence in an “A.I. put” is fueling one of the most concentrated and optimistic stock markets in decades.Join hosts Nick Antonucci, CVA, CEPA, Director of Research, and Managing Associates K.C. What employers should know about key developments this week: DOL Proposes Opening 401(k) Investments: The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) proposed a rule establishing a process-based safe harbor for fiduciaries under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, opening the door to alternative assets—including cryptocurrency, private equity, and real estate—in 401(k) plans. NLRB Wants Its Removal Protections Stripped: The National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB" or "Board") asked a federal court to declare unconstitutional the statutory provisions limiting the U.S. president's ability to remove members of the NLRB and administrative law judges—marking the first time the Board itself has taken this position. Compliance with Military Leave Requests: Amid ongoing global conflicts, employers should prepare for an influx of military leave requests and review their obligations under the federal Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, as well as any applicable state law. In this special "Breaking News" episode of the Directed IRA Podcast, Mat breaks down new guidance from the Department of Labor that could expand 401(k) access to alternative investments like private equity, real estate funds, and crypto.Mat explains why alternatives have largely been excluded—fiduciary liability under ERISA—and how the proposed rule shifts the focus to a prudent, process-based standard centered on risk-adjusted returns.Mat also discuss what the DOL's “neutral” stance means for plan sponsors, what's coming next from the SEC, and how this could reshape retirement investing. Most importantly, Mat highlights that owning alternative assets in an IRA is already possible through the power or self-directed IRAs. In this episode we answer emails from Connor, Zachary and Brian. We discuss fund selection, doing the Big Law dance, portfolio construction basics and analyzing alternatives, and a partial retirement drawdown scenario involving early withdrawals, avoiding temptations to market time based on recent performances and funding a vacation property with a dedicated portfolio. But first we thank donors supporting Fairfax CASA and share Jillian Johnsrud's moving story about adoption, foster care, and how a steadfast CASA changed her kids' lives.Links:Fairfax CASA Donation Page: Donate - Fairfax CASAFather McKenna Center Donation Page: Donate - Father McKenna Center"Retire Often" by Jillian Johnsrud: Book | Retire OftenBridgewater Paper Describing the Four Quadrant Model: Microsoft Word - 2009.12 AW Info Pack.docBlog Article Describing Risk Parity Principles and the Four Quadrant Model: 15 Uncorrelated Assets | SSiSVideo Describing Correlations of Alternatives (start timestamp 1:10): iMGP DBi Managed Futures Strategy ETF Update with Andrew Beer | January 2026Breathless AI-Bot Summary: A single constant can change a child's life. That's the heart of Jillian Johnsrud's adoption and CASA story, where a determined CASA volunteer carried the full thread of her kids' journey through seven case managers and years of upheaval. We open with gratitude for Fairfax CASA donors and a candid look at what Court Appointed Special Advocates really do: show up, remember, advocate, and persist in an unreasonably hard job that needs every ounce of support we can give. From there we pivot to the questions you care about. We unpack why SCHG works fine as a large cap growth sleeve and then dive into a pragmatic guide to risk parity. Using a four-quadrant map of growth and inflation, we explain how to pair equities with long-term Treasuries, gold, and managed futures to raise safe withdrawal rates without pretending to predict the future. You'll hear how uncorrelated return streams and disciplined rebalancing—Shannon's Demon in action—turn volatility into a feature, not a bug. We also draw a bright line between true diversifiers and crowded “alts” that secretly track stocks. We get tactical: how to treat accounts as one portfolio while keeping extra liquidity in taxable during a low-stress, lower-income phase; when to tax-gain harvest; and why tilting heavily into whatever just outperformed (gold now, bonds avoided) is classic recency bias. For those juggling work and life pivots, Frank shares hard-won Big Law advice: build stamina, communicate clearly, be relentlessly reliable, and stay curious as practice areas shift. Finally, we brainstorm a small, dedicated portfolio to fund a shared family vacation home, and why this sandbox is perfect for testing a slightly higher equity mix you can always top up.If this resonates, help us amplify the work of Fairfax CASA, then subscribe, share the episode with a friend who's rethinking their allocation, and leave a quick review so more DIY investors can find the show. Clare Baukham is a global wealth architect, alternative investment curator, and creator of the Billionaire Women platform who helps clients go beyond traditional portfolios into higher-upside asset classes like blue-chip art. She rose as an award-winning financial advisor in Canada before expanding into media as an executive producer on TV series about wealth, power, and business, and eventually built her own firm around the idea that wealth is identity, structure, and seduction. On this episode we talk about: How Clare went from a family machine shop to floral design, acting, professional options trading, and finally top-tier wealth planning. What she learned shadowing one of Canada's leading advisors and later a billionaire mentor—then why she left the traditional bank-controlled model. Why she believes budgeting alone won't make you rich, and why most households need “alpha” (high-upside) bets alongside safer “beta” investments. The logic behind using fine art as an asset class, including examples of paintings appreciating from a few million to tens of millions of dollars. How her team acquires, stores, and plans to tour a curated collection, while allowing investors to buy fractional ownership instead of full pieces. Top 3 Takeaways You don't need to reinvent the wheel to build wealth. Attach yourself to people who already have the results you want, copy their playbook, and then adapt it to a vehicle you actually care about. High-net-worth investors think in “alpha” and “beta,” not just savings accounts. A small, risk-tolerant slice of your portfolio in alternative assets can meaningfully accelerate your path to freedom. Alternative assets can be both financial and lifestyle plays. For the right investor, owning a fraction of museum-worthy art (instead of more index funds) is as much about story and identity as returns. Notable Quotes “You're their trophy—they want you to win so they can say, ‘Look what I can do.'” “Most advisors white-knuckle market crashes. I wanted clients positioned to want the crash because everything's on sale.” “You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Take the billionaire's blueprint and lay it over something you actually believe in.” Connect with Clare Baukham: Website: https://www.clearwealthgroup.com/ Instagram: instagram.com/clarebaukham ✖️✖️✖️✖️

Endowments manage large portfolios with a focus on long-term returns. Private equity includes investments in privately held companies and debt. Investing in private equity carries significant risks, including illiquidity. 401k plans may provide a suitable structure for holding alternative assets. Investors should be cautious of chasing returns without understanding the risks. Individual financial situations must be assessed uniquely when considering investments. Understanding the underlying assets in alternative investments is crucial. Diversification can be beneficial, but it must be approached with caution. Welcome to a new week here on the Retirement Quick Tips podcast! I'm your host, Ashley Micciche. This week on the podcast, we're looking at private equity and cryptocurrencies as investment options in your 401k - is this a big opportunity or a hard pass? On August 7, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order titled Democratizing Access to Alternative Assets for 401(k) Investors. This order paves the way for allowing 401(k) plans to include alternative investments like cryptocurrency and private investments in 401(k) plans. Which begs the question: Is this a good idea for investors? Alternatives and private investments have a track record of higher fees, illiquidity, and higher risk for investors. Their complexity could create problems and additional risks for investors if 401(k) plan trustees eventually move to add these investments to their plan offerings. So let's explore this a little more, because you might see these options popping up in your 401ks in the near future, and it's important to think through the potential benefits and risks so you can make the right decision about how to invest your 401k for your retirement. Next Monday, I'll be back with a new theme - at this point, the Fed will almost certainly lower interest rates when they meet this week, and by the time you're listening to this episode, perhaps they already have. So we'll talk about what that means for inflation, bonds, stocks, mortgage rates, and your retirement next week. I hope you have a blessed week. My name is Ashley Micciche, this is the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast.

For decades, private equity has been the darling of pension funds, university endowments, and sovereign wealth funds, promising high returns and low volatility. Now, President Donald Trump has made it possible for everyday investors to get in on the magic with his executive order, "Democratizing Access to Alternative Assets for 401(k) Investors.” The order relieves regulatory burdens that limit the access of defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s, to alternative assets such as private equity (but also cryptocurrency and real estate). The hope is to give American workers access to greater choice, diversification, and potential growth towards a comfortable retirement. But Trump's order comes just as longstanding questions about private equity's promise of high returns and low risk are coming to the fore. Has the distribution of returns slowed to a trickle? What does data actually say about private equity's performance, and where is the industry headed? There is also a long standing debate whether private equity is good for society, independent of financial returns. Is private equity actually a ponzi scheme that now threatens the retirements of millions of American workers? To make sense of it all, Luigi and Bethany are joined by Dan Rasmussen, an experienced investor and author who began his career in private equity but has emerged as one of the most prescient critics of the industry. Together, the three of them distill what the state of the industry means for the future welfare of investors, workers, and the American economy as a whole.Bonus: Check out ProMarket's recent series on the impact of private equity in the health care industry.

In this episode of the Directed IRA Podcast, Mark Kohler and Mat Sorensen break down a groundbreaking new executive order from President Donald Trump that could reshape the future of 401(k) investing—by opening the door to alternative assets. For decades, Wall Street and Washington have kept most retirement savers locked into a narrow menu of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs. This executive order flips the script, setting a national policy that every American preparing for retirement should have the option to invest in alternatives—just like the wealthiest institutions do.Mat and Mark explain what “alternative assets” really mean in this context, from real estate and crypto to private equity, commodities, and infrastructure investments. They walk through the specific investments cited in the order, why these options have been off-limits for most 401(k) participants, and how this policy could shift the $8 trillion 401(k) industry toward more choice and freedom for everyday investors. They also unpack the political dynamics, regulatory hurdles, and 180-day timeline for the Department of Labor and SEC to develop new guidance—while emphasizing what you can do right now. If you have an IRA or old 401(k), you can already invest in alternatives today using a self-directed account, bypassing the “check-the-box” limitations of traditional plans.Whether you're a corporate employee stuck with cookie-cutter 401(k) options or a self-directed investor ready to take the reins, this episode will help you understand the stakes, the timeline, and the opportunities in this unprecedented policy shift.Chapters:00:08 - Trump's Executive Order on Alternative Assets02:19 - Defining Alternative Assets02:30 - Learn How to Invest in Alternative Assets(https://altassetsummit.com/)02:48 - List of Alternative Assets - From Trump04:19 - How the Executive Order Could Impact You05:20 - Timeline and Political Landscape09:07 - The Power of Self-Directed Investing12:02 - IRAs: Invest in Alternatives Today14:03- Directed IRA Homepage: https://directedira.com/ Directed IRA Explore (Linktree): https://linktr.ee/SelfDirectedIRA Book a Call: https://directedira.com/appointment/ Other:Mat Sorensen: https://matsorensen.com & https://linktr.ee/MatSorensen KKOS: https://kkoslawyers.comMain Street Business https://mainstreetbusiness.com

In this episode of Zen and the Art of Real Estate Investing, Jonathan welcomes Patrick Grimes, founder of Passive Investing Mastery and Invest on Main Street. Patrick shares how a painful first deal during the 2008 crash reshaped his investing mindset, leading him to focus on long-term wealth accumulation, cash flow, and true portfolio diversification. What began with single-family rentals eventually expanded into large multifamily syndications, recession-resilient markets, and alternative assets, including litigation finance and debt funds. Patrick walks listeners through how he helps investors build a balanced portfolio by spreading risk across multiple, non-correlated asset classes.
