From 2018- Historian and best-selling author Jon Meachem talks about his book "The Soul of America: The Battle for our Better Angels." It is tempting to say that America has never been more divided than it is right now- but in the book, he discusses how bitterly divided our nation has been at many points in its history.... and that division and conflict have been a part of our democracy right from the beginning.

Welcome to Independent Americans. And welcome to March. The weather is changing. It's warming up and spring is so close you can almost smell it. But instead you're probably smelling something different in the air. Something a lot less pleasant. It's a smell that's always been pervasive in Washington, DC and also on television and the airwaves. But in the last couple of years the smell has gotten out of control. It's everywhere. It comes out of random strangers at random times. You can't escape it. It's everywhere. It's bullshit. Whether it's a government shutdown, or America abandoning Ukraine, or two old men apparently nobody wants for President running for President, we are drowning in bullshit. And when you're drowning in bullshit, you've got to reach for the truth. And you're gonna get it in this episode. From Paul Rieckhoff on Nikki Haley dropping out, Biden being too old, Trump being too toxic, SecDef Austin being too slow, and much more. To include Ukraine. Tim Mak (@timkmak) is a man on a mission to find the truth. Tim is an investigative journalist with a background in politics, national security, and emergency medicine. He's the author of a book about the inner workings of the NRA, titled 'Misfire.' and he's a former U.S. Army medic and EMT. His writing has been featured in Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, The Daily Beast, Politico Magazine, and the L.A. Times. And you can hear him regularly on NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Politics Podcast. He's reported abroad from such places as Ukraine, South Sudan, Djibouti, Israel, Japan and Hong Kong. And now, he's launched his own new media venture called The Counteroffensive. He's taking people deep inside the war in Ukraine. And he joins host Paul Rieckhoff for a look behind the front lines at the people who are feeling abandoned and betrayed by America. It's a heavy dose of truth, but it's a lot better than the bullshit. If you like bullshit, this ain't your place. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's content for the 49% of Americans that proudly call themselves independent. And it always delivers the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. Classrooms have been a key battleground in the so-called woke wars for years now. But could the debate over how schools teach history, race, gender and sexuality be coming to an end? This week on “Matter of Opinion,” the hosts look at signs that these wedge issues are no longer dividing us, ask whether we have reached “peak woke” and disagree on whether it's even worth fighting about wokeness at all. “The United States is the only thing that stands between us and a global one world government,” warns Dr. E. Gaylon McCollough. Gaylon is an esteemed plastic surgeon and the author of 25 books that take aim at exposing the insidious New World Order (NWO) that is being implemented around the globe. Gaylon explains how 13 elite families control this pernicious agenda, including the Rothchilds and the Rockefellers. He also speaks about the forward thinking of George Orwell in his book, 1984, which Gaylon likens to reading “the history of the future.” Orwell foresaw the rise of Big Brother (the Deep State), doublespeak (the changing of our language) and the propaganda arm of the press (the mainstream media). In 2015 sprak juist daar paus Franciscus. The single most costly battle of the American Civil War happened in the early days of July 1863, falling on the same days the Founding Fathers finalized the Declaration of Independence less than 90 years earlier. Ret. Marine Col Rob Abbott, one of the few Licensed Battlefield Guides of Gettysburg National Military Park, takes us through the days before, during, and after the Battle of Gettysburg.
Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer who has spent the last two decades pounding out bestselling accounts of American presidents such as Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and George H.W. Bush. In June 2019, Joe Biden invited Meacham to Newark, Delaware, for a conversation about the biographer's recent volume, The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, a 416-page meditation on how enlightened political leaders, propelled by a civic-minded citizenry, have rescued America at its darkest hours. Meacham explained that the country's soul “is not all good or all bad” but rather an abiding conflict between “our better angels” and “our worst instincts.” Two months before Biden announced his third run for the presidency, the intellectual underpinnings of the campaign were already in place. His ensuing candidacy was an exercise in moving Meacham's thesis from the page to the stump: Biden cribbed Meacham's book title for his campaign framing, a “battle for the soul of the nation,” and Meacham occasionally weighed in on the narrative and thematic elements of Biden's major speeches. On today's episode, listen to an exploration of how Meacham has lingered on as a sort of historical and spiritual adviser to a White House beset by crisis, written by Mother Jones reporter Kata Voght. This is our first in a biweekly Summer series of read-aloud investigations, produced by our parters at Audm. You can Kara's piece from April, here.
Trump's GOP has demonstrated an eagerness to believe in conspiracy theories and to accept disinformation that bolsters their politics. How did it get that way? On Today's Show: Jon Meacham, journalist, Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian, host of the new podcast "Fate of Fact" and the author of The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels (Random House, 2018), talks about what he's learned in his new podcast, which examines why so many conservative Americans have become receptive to disinformation and fans of conspiracy theories.

How do we find hope, particularly in white American churches, when our history and identity is intertwined with racism? How does knowing who we were—and who we are—help us move toward justice and who we want to become? When historian Jon Meacham spoke with MPR News host Kerri Miller just a few months into the Trump presidency, people were already talking about the fight over America’s soul. His book, “The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels,” and his conversation with Miller seems even more pertinent today, after a year that has brought impeachment hearings, a worldwide pandemic still spreading in the U.S. and racial tensions that have boiled over. On this Independence Day weekend, we are revisiting a portion of that conversation. Guest: Jon Meacham, author of “The Soul of America” Editor’s note: This conversation originally aired on June 14, 2018. To listen to the conversation you can use the audio player above. Jon Meacham, first and foremost is a friend. We were honored to have him speak at both my parents funerals this year and last year. He's also an amazing presidential biographer who's written about Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Franklin D Roosevelt, and my father, George H.W. Bush. And the truth is, he knows more about our family than, well, our family does. In this interview, Jon pulls out anecdotal stories which define the personalities and ways of being of our most memorable presidents. He even creates a recipe for the perfect leader based on a combination of four presidents and the traits of: intellectual curiosity, candor, empathy and humility. We learn that self care, mind body and spirit health, and relationships with families and friends is in a sense a reflection of our health as a nation. Pulitzer Prize winning author Jon Meacham talks about his new book 'The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels.'
Presidential historian and Tennessean Jon Meacham discussed his book The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels with Senator Lamar Alexander on July 8 in an event sponsored by http://www.knoxfriends.org/past-events/ (Friends of the Knox County Public Library) and http://unionavebooks.com/upcoming-events/jon-meacham/ (Union Ave Books). In The Soul of America, Meacham helps us understand the present moment in American politics by looking back at critical times in our country’s history when hope overcame division. He tells us that what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have found a way to prevail again and again during dark times throughout our country’s history. Here are excerpts from that conversation.
A ''tough-minded'' but ''nuanced and persuasive'' (The New York Times Book Review) expert on history, politics, and religion in America, Jon Meacham won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for his biography American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House. His other bestselling nonfiction includes American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation and Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power. Currently executive editor and executive vice president at Random House, Meacham was formerly editor-in-chief of Newsweek. In The Soul of America, Meacham contextualizes the country's current political climate by looking back at the critical periods in our past when what Lincoln prophetically termed ''the better angels of our nature'' defeated fear, demagoguery, and division. Watch the video here. (recorded 7/12/2018)

I assume that most of you believe that the state of America has seldom been worse. Racial progress, America as a melting pot, the global alliance that has seen us through the past 75 years, character, civility, and liberal democracy itself, all seem to be under siege. While this is all true, it's also true is that we’ve been here before. There have been many dark moment in American history. Maybe there is something in our very DNA that sets us up for it. But certainly from the Alien and Sedition acts though the Civil War, the industrial revolution, America First, the great depression, Jim Crow, the cold war and the tyranny of Joe McCarthy, we’ve seen that bad things happen to good countries. Each time though we have emerged stronger. We have understood that the fault was not in our stars, but in ourselves and so we have reached deeply within ourselves for our better angels. But as the pundits of Wall Street ask all the time, is it different this time? This is the heart of Pulitzer Prize winning historian and best selling author Jon Meacham's latest work The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels My conversation with Jon Meacham:
Host Don Marsh talks to author and historian Jon Meacham about Meacham's latest book, "Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels."
Jon Meacham’s new book, The Soul of America: The Battle for our Better Angels provides a condensed view of the history of the United States, chronicling the tougher times that we have endured.I enjoy reading history, and at my age, I’ve lived a lot of it! What strikes me in reading Meacham’s book is how our history has been distorted by the story-teller, and even when living through an era, our memories are imperfect. As Jon’s book unfolds, he gives us hope that just as in times past, the right parts of humanity prevail and we are a better society when we band together with simple messages about loving one another and caring for our neighbor. It was the perfect reading material last week to follow Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s inspiring sermon at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle!Jon’s well-referenced story dispelled many of the myths that I had previously held:I’ve been to museums that attempt to convince that the Civil War was really all about the financial challenges of a cotton-based economy. Not so fast. Jon cites numerous politicians and authors of the time: it was clearly about slavery and racial injustice. But what I didn’t know is that Abraham Lincoln had changed his position on slavery, first agreeing that no slave owner would have to change in the South, but then eventually turning to an emancipation of all slaves regardless of location.I remember how excited my mother was when JFK was elected. Both my parents were staunch Republicans but also Catholics. My mother said that a Catholic would never be elected to the US Presidency as she carried the stigma of being the daughter of Polish Catholic immigrants.I had forgotten that the Ku Klux Klan wasn’t just against African-Americans. They hated Catholics and Jews, too. How easy it is to block our memories when we encounter sin.I’m left with this quote from Meacham’s book: “There is such a thing as discernible reality. Facts, as John Adams once said, are stubborn things, and yet too many Americans are locked into their particular vision of the world, choosing this view or that perspective based not on its grounding in fact but on whether it’s a view or perspective endorsed by the leaders one follows. “The dictators of the world say that if you tell a lie often enough, why, people will believe it,” Truman wrote. “Well, if you tell the truth often enough, they’ll believe it and go along with you.”May we start telling the truth, not blocking sin from our memory but overcoming it.Blessings, my friend,Agatha
Historian, journalist, editor and biographer Jon Meacham has never shied away from challenging subjects. American Lion, his study of the presidency of Andrew Jackson, captured one of America's most controversial and consequential figures for the 21st century, and brought its author the Pulitzer Prize. He joins us on this episode to talk about The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, a study of the urgent moments, from Reconstruction through early 20th century battles over immigration, McCarthyism, racism and equal rights, that have tested the national character — and give us, he writes, an opportunity to better understand what we can be in the here and now.
Pulitzer-prize winning presidential biographer and Chattanooga native Jon Meacham has written books on the lives of Thomas Jefferson, George H. W. Bush, Andrew Jackson, and the relationship between Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. He joins us in this episode of the Whole Hog to discuss essential Southern reading, the historian’s responsibility, moving back to the South, and his new book, 'The Soul of America: The Battle for our Better Angels'.

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham helps us understand the present moment of crisis in American politics by looking back at critical times in our history when hope overcame hatred and reveals how his latest book The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels was born in the dark days following the infamous Charlottesville rally. He talks about similarities between the current age and the 1920’s, how America during Great Depression could have easily followed the path of Germany into totalitarianism, and what Donald Trump could learn from the fate of red-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy. He discusses moments when Presidents have served as moral leaders for the nation including the day George H.W. Bush handed in his NRA card and an oft forgotten speech by Dwight Eisenhower that is all too relevant today. Plus George H.W. Bush's biographer shares some candid memories of the late former First Lady Barbara Bush. Order Jon Meacham's book The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels on Amazon or Audible.
