Iedere zaterdag maken we kennis met een van de correspondenten van de NOS, het land waar ze wonen, en de verhalen die wat hen betreft meer aandacht verdienen. Vandaag: Vaticaan-correspondent Andrea Vreede. Andrea vertelt in deze podcast hoe zij naar eigen een beetje een vreemde eend in de bijt is in de wereld van het Vaticaan: als ongelovige, als Nederlandse, als vrouw en dan ook nog eens als vrouw die op vrouwen valt. Maar die positie als 'outsider' biedt ook voordelen, zegt ze. Het belemmert haar nooit in haar werk, noch in haar interesse of fascinatie voor de katholieke kerk. Waar komt die toch vandaan? De afgelopen periode - met het ziekbed en de dood van paus Franciscus en daarna het conclaaf en de installatie van de nieuwe paus - is haar niet in de koude kleren gaan zitten. Het was topsport, een achtbaan, en pas nu ze wat meer rust begint te krijgen komt er ook een zekere emotie los.  Andrea woont al ruim dertig jaar in Italië en kent het land door en door. Ze ziet zichzelf niet snel terug gaan. Ze heeft de keuze gemaakt die haar ouders niet konden maken: ze is verhuisd naar een land waar ze zelf heen wilde, en waar ze zich nu ook echt thuis voelt. Al blijft het volgens haar een schok om te ontdekken 'hoe vreselijk Nederlands je bent terwijl je eigenlijk dacht dat je een wereldburger was.' Habemus papam! Er is een nieuwe paus: Leo XIV, geboortenaam Robert Francis Prevost. Voor het eerst is het een Amerikaan – en dat is saillant, zeker in het licht van die andere Amerikaanse wereldleider: Donald Trump. Wat betekent deze keuze voor de katholieke kerk? En voor de wereld? Wat weten we al over deze nieuwe paus – en vooral: wat nog niet? Maar daarin was hij niet uniek zegt OVT-coryfee en katholicisme-kenner Jos Palm. Hij ziet opvallende gelijkenissen met paus Johannes XXIII die de kerk in de jaren zestig dichter bij de moderne tijd bracht. Dat deed hij met het Tweede Vaticaanse Concilie (1962-1965), waarvan hij de geestelijk vader was. Palm is te gast.

C'est le cardinal camerlingue Kevin Farrell, désormais chargé de gérer les affaires du Vatican jusqu'à l'élection d'un nouveau pape, qui a annoncé la nouvelle : le pape François est décédé lundi 21 avril à 7h35 à l'âge de 88 ans, au lendemain de sa dernière apparition sur la place Saint Pierre. Très affaibli suite à une longue hospitalisation pour une double pneumonie, il a succombé à un accident vasculaire cérébral. Sa mort a suscité une grande émotion parmi les quelque 1 milliard 400 millions de fidèles catholiques mais aussi au-delà, lui qui tenait à tisser des ponts avec toutes les religions et croyances et qui avait mis les pauvres et les marginalisés au centre de ses discours. Sur la place Saint Pierre à Rome devant l'imposante basilique du Vatican, la foule s'est pressée pour rendre un dernier hommage au 266è pape, l'Argentin Jorge Mario Bergoglio, celui qu'on était allé chercher « au bout du monde » comme il l'avait dit depuis le balcon de la basilique Saint Pierre le jour de son élection en mars 2013. En cette année de jubilé (année sainte tous les 50 ans pour l'Église catholique), Rome accueillait déjà de nombreux pèlerins, mais aussi des touristes du monde entier, dont certains ont décidé de rester jusqu'aux funérailles du pape François, qui a été inhumé samedi 26 avril dans la basilique Sainte Marie Majeure. Une basilique qui date du Vè siècle, symbole de l'adoration à la Madonna, la Vierge Marie, qui était si chère au pape François, qui souhaitait une pierre tombale simple : elle est en marbre avec une seule inscription, Franciscus, François en latin.Les cardinaux du monde entier dont 108 nommés par le pape François continuaient d'arriver à Rome pour se réunir quotidiennement en congrégation générale, afin de prendre des décisions comme les funérailles ou le calendrier des célébrations spéciales pendant les jours de deuil et pour préparer le conclave. Seuls les cardinaux de moins de 80 ans (environ 133 – 2 ont annoncé qu'ils ne viendraient pas) pourront prendre part au vote à huis-clos. Le conclave sera présidé par le cardinal Pietro Parolin, désormais ancien secrétaire d'État au Vatican. Une étape majeure qui pourra commencer après la période de deuil, les « novemdiales » - neuf jours à compter du 26 avril 2025 – soit à partir du 5 mai prochain.

Terwijl de wereld nog afscheid neemt, wordt al druk gespeculeerd over zijn opvolger. En wordt al druk gelobbyd bij de 133 kardinalen die straks bij elkaar gaan zitten om de nieuwe paus te kiezen. President Donald Trumps agenda van massadeportatie is een ‘aanslag op de waardigheid van vele mannen en vrouwen, en hele families’. En iemand ‘die alleen maar denkt aan het bouwen van muren, en niet van bruggen, is geen christen’. Een typerende uitspraak van paus Franciscus. Met een even typerend antwoord van Donald Trump: ‘Als het Vaticaan wordt aangevallen door IS, zou de paus wensen en bidden dat Donald Trump president was’. Deze kwalificaties dateren uit 2017, rondom de enige ontmoeting tussen Franciscus en Trump ooit, in het Vaticaan. Tot zijn dood zou de paus zich fel blijven verzetten tegen de jacht op migranten, die Trump in zijn eerste termijn begon en die de belangrijkste pijler is waarop zijn succes in eigen land steunt. Het is een fascinerende strijd. Trump blijft volhouden dat zijn land is overstroomd door miljoenen terroristen, verkrachters, bendeleden, drugshandelaren en prostituees. Ook de paus, die als Argentijn te midden van armoe, achterstand en discriminatie is opgegroeid, maakte van het onderwerp migratie een van zijn belangrijkste pijlers. Zijn eerste buitenlandse bezoek, in 2013, was aan Lampedusa, op dat moment de metafoor van het asielzoekersvraagstuk. Zijn pleidooi voor het opnemen van migranten stond diametraal tegenover de Trump-doctrine. Het scheiden van ouders en kinderen, een van de hoekstenen van de doctrine, noemde Franciscus ‘immoreel en in strijd met de katholieke beginselen’. Vlak voordat hij ziek werd, schreef de paus nog een brief aan de Amerikaanse bisschoppen, waarin hij Trumps uitzettingscampagne een schande noemde. ‘Ik spoor alle katholieken aan niet te zwichten voor het narratief van discriminatie tegen, en het onnodig verzwaren van het lot van onze vluchtelingen broeders en zusters’. Wat is nou zo fascinerend? Dat Amerika het op drie na hoogste aantal rooms-katholieke burgers ter wereld telt, zo’n 80 miljoen – een kwart van de bevolking. Je zou verwachten dat het woord van de paus dus behoorlijk invloed zou hebben op de publieke opinie over migratie. Maar ook op de evangelische beweging, die dezelfde opvatting over naastenliefde en het in de Bijbel opgelegde bieden van onderdak aan vreemden koestert. Was paus Franciscus een hervormer die de kerk voorgoed heeft veranderd of bleef het vooral bij mooie symboliek? En wat gaat er nu gebeuren?
