Op 1 november 2025 riep Paus Leo XIV de heilige John Henry Newman uit tot kerkleraar.  Slechts 38 personen bekwamen deze titel van “Doctor Ecclesiae”  in de 2000 jaar geschiedenis van onze Kerk. En zo komt kerkleraar Newman te staan naast o.a. Augustinus, Chrysostomus, Hieronymus, Thomas Van Aquino, Theresia van Avila en Catherina van Siena en meer recent met Theresia van Lisieux en Hildegard von Bingen. Tevens vierde het ‘Het internationaal Centrum van Newman's vrienden' in Rome hun 50-jarig bestaan, opgericht na een groot symposium welke plaatsvond in 1975 en waardoor Newman herontdekt werd aan de universiteiten. Met de steun van de congregatie voor heiligverklaringen, en in het bijzonder van paus Benedictus XVI volgden in 2010 de zaligverklaring en onder paus Franciscus in 2019 de heiligverklaring.

Van onze Correspondent is een serie van de makers van podcast De Dag. Iedere zaterdag maken we kennis met een van de correspondenten van de NOS, het land waar ze wonen, en de verhalen die wat hen betreft meer aandacht verdienen. Vandaag: Vaticaan-correspondent Andrea Vreede. Andrea vertelt in deze podcast hoe zij naar eigen een beetje een vreemde eend in de bijt is in de wereld van het Vaticaan: als ongelovige, als Nederlandse, als vrouw en dan ook nog eens als vrouw die op vrouwen valt. Maar die positie als 'outsider' biedt ook voordelen, zegt ze. Het belemmert haar nooit in haar werk, noch in haar interesse of fascinatie voor de katholieke kerk. Waar komt die toch vandaan? De afgelopen periode - met het ziekbed en de dood van paus Franciscus en daarna het conclaaf en de installatie van de nieuwe paus - is haar niet in de koude kleren gaan zitten. Het was topsport, een achtbaan, en pas nu ze wat meer rust begint te krijgen komt er ook een zekere emotie los.  Andrea woont al ruim dertig jaar in Italië en kent het land door en door. Ze ziet zichzelf niet snel terug gaan. Ze heeft de keuze gemaakt die haar ouders niet konden maken: ze is verhuisd naar een land waar ze zelf heen wilde, en waar ze zich nu ook echt thuis voelt. Al blijft het volgens haar een schok om te ontdekken 'hoe vreselijk Nederlands je bent terwijl je eigenlijk dacht dat je een wereldburger was.' Habemus papam! Er is een nieuwe paus: Leo XIV, geboortenaam Robert Francis Prevost. Voor het eerst is het een Amerikaan – en dat is saillant, zeker in het licht van die andere Amerikaanse wereldleider: Donald Trump. Wat betekent deze keuze voor de katholieke kerk? En voor de wereld? Wat weten we al over deze nieuwe paus – en vooral: wat nog niet? We vragen het aan onze katholieke vriend van de show, en inmiddels ook Pausduider des Vaderlands voor de NOS: Anton de Wit, hoofdredacteur van het Katholiek Nieuwsblad. Maar daarin was hij niet uniek zegt OVT-coryfee en katholicisme-kenner Jos Palm. Hij ziet opvallende gelijkenissen met paus Johannes XXIII die de kerk in de jaren zestig dichter bij de moderne tijd bracht. Dat deed hij met het Tweede Vaticaanse Concilie (1962-1965), waarvan hij de geestelijk vader was. Palm is te gast.
