Today we talk with Leonardo Bonett, a seasoned journalist who spent an extraordinary 40 years working for Voice of America (VOA), and had just retired this last march 2025. Voice of America is a government-funded international broadcaster that, for over eight decades, served as one of the most trusted and influential voices in global journalism. Our conversation traces the arc of VOA's unique role in the world: a broadcaster committed to telling the truth, regardless of political pressure, and a key player in U.S. “soft diplomacy.” With a presence in over 40 languages and listeners spanning the globe, VOA earned its reputation not by pushing propaganda, but by offering fact-based reporting to regions often starved for independent news. We explore how VOA was born out of the Second World War as a response to Nazi propaganda, pledging from the start to tell the truth — good or bad. That commitment to journalistic integrity became its enduring legacy. Over the decades, VOA's mission aligned with American ideals of transparency, press freedom, and democratic values, acting as a bridge between cultures and as a platform for voices too often silenced in their own countries. Our guest brings us his perspectives about VOA, and [...]

Voice of America (VOA),, the U.S. government-funded international broadcaster, is facing an unprecedented crisis. Journalists have been cut off from their newsrooms—emails shut down, phones disconnected, and no way to reach editors—leaving many in a state of uncertainty. Steve Herman, Chief National Correspondent for VOA, finds himself among more than 1,300 colleagues placed on excused absence. While Herman was singled out under an executive order deeming him potentially disloyal to the president's foreign policy, his colleagues' suspensions were not linked to any alleged wrongdoing. As the shutdown stretches on, audiences once served by VOA's trusted reporting are turning elsewhere, raising questions about the future of one of America's most enduring journalistic institutions. In this edition of The New Lines Institute Middle East Center's Post-Assad Podcast series, Middle East Center co-director Nicholas A. Heras sits down with Voice of America (VOA) reporter Sirwan Kajjo to assess how the emerging regime in Damascus will engage with the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in Northeast Syria. Sirwan, a well-known Syrian-American intellectual and journalist, works for the Extremism Watch Desk at VOA where he focuses on Islamic militancy, extremism, and conflict in the Middle East and beyond that region. Heras and Kajjo also discuss how the emerging government in Damascus will lead the process of creating a post-Assad order and whether that order can successfully incorporate all the country's different communities.
At Turning Point USA's AmFest conference in Phoenix, I sat down with former TV anchor Kari Lake, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to head Voice of America (VOA).VOA is an international broadcaster funded by Congress that releases content in nearly 50 languages to more than 300 million people weekly around the globe. It was founded in 1942 to combat Nazi propaganda and share the “policies of the United States clearly and effectively.” VOA later played a major role in the ideological fight against communism during the Cold War.The director of Voice of America is officially nominated by the head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media. After Senate approval, the candidate must also be approved by a majority vote of the International Broadcasting Advisory Board. What would Voice of America look like under Kari Lake?Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

This episode of the Sinica Podcast, recorded in June 2017, is running as a bonus this week. The arrest of Stephen Bannon yesterday on August 20, 2020, has brought renewed media attention to Guō Wénguì 郭文贵, a business associate of Bannon’s who is wanted by the Chinese government. The Wall Street Journal has recently reported that the federal authorities are examining the pair’s business dealings. Alexandra Stevenson and Mike Forsythe, journalists for the New York Times, joined Kaiser and Jeremy in 2017 to share their thoughts on Guo’s uncertain personal history and his quest to shine a light on the murky world of Chinese elite politics. The original description of the podcast, including many useful references of the people in Guo’s complicated backstory, is reproduced below:The life and times of Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui 郭文贵 reads much like an epic play, so it is fitting that we have included with this podcast a dramatis personæ to explain the many characters in Guo’s story. Scroll to the bottom, below the recommendations, to follow along with them in order of appearance.New York Times journalists Mike Forsythe and Alexandra Stevenson have spent over a dozen hours with the turbulent tycoon at the New York City penthouse overlooking Central Park where he resides in exile, listening to his stories and carefully investigating his most scandalous claims. Mike has for years been a leading reporter on the intersection of money and power in elite Chinese politics, first at Bloomberg and then at the Times. Alex, as a reporter at the Financial Times and now the New York Times, has focused on covering hedge funds, emerging markets, and the world of finance. Are Guo’s myriad corruption allegations, which go as high as China’s anti-corruption chief, Wang Qishan 王岐山, credible? Is even Guo’s own life history verifiable? Who is he really, and why is he on this quest to unveil the shadowy world of Chinese elite politics? Mike and Alex don’t have all the answers, but they are two of the best people in the world to shed light on what is profound and what is puffery in Guo’s version of events. The life and times of Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui 郭文贵 reads much like an epic play, so it is fitting that we have included with this podcast a dramatis personæ to explain the many characters in Guo’s story. MERCEDES-BENZ EQC EDITION 1886 ADDS EXCLUSIVITY TO THE ELECTRIC SUV A limited special edition EQC Edition 1886 has been announced at the New York Auto Show as a tribute to the first motor car, and looking forward at a new era for Daimler. "As for the name, it’s obviously a callback to the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen – the vehicle widely recognized as the first production car. Mechanically speaking, everything about the EQC Edition 1886 is just as you’ll find it on the standard model. A pair of electric motors drive all four wheels with a combined output of 402 horsepower (300 kilowatts), drawing power from an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Mercedes estimates the EQC’s range between 277 and 293 miles, with the capability for fast charging at 110 kW when such high-output stations are available" writes Chris Smith for motor1.com: "The standard EQC is expected to arrive in June for the European market, with U.S. sales beginning next year. The Edition 1886 is also slated to go on sale in the U.S. next year. Pricing for either model hasn’t been announced yet." I think that points towards Mercedes engineers having done a great job on efficiency, because 80kWh is less than others are using for the same size vehicle, if you look at the 95kWh Audi e-tron which just scrapes over 200 miles on the EPA range. https://www.motor1.com/news/345040/mercedes-benz-eqc-edition-1886/ WORLD CAR AWARDS GIVES JAGUAR I-PACE THREE HONORS "The Jaguar I-Pace was a critical darling of the World Car of the Year Awards, announced Wednesday at the New York Auto Show. It nabbed the World Car of the Year Award, as well as honors for Green Car and Design." says Zac for InsideEVs.com: "The other two finalists for the World Car of the Year award, announced last month at the Geneva Motor Show, were the Audi E-Tron and the Volvo S60/V60. The I-Pace shared its World Green Car award with the Audi, while the hydrogen fuel cell Hyundai Nexo was also nominated for that honor. Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum, was in New York to receive the awards. Underscoring the significance of the awards, he said that “going green” was going to happen to the whole industry and that cars like the I-Pace are the start of the journey." https://insideevs.com/2019-ny-auto-show-jaguar-world-car/ LOTUS ANNOUNCES ‘WORLD’S FIRST FULL ELECTRIC BRITISH HYPERCAR’, UNVEILS TEASER "Lotus confirmed that it is working on what they describe as the “world’s first full electric British hypercar” and it unveiled a teaser image for the electric vehicle." writes Fred for Electrek today: "There have been rumors about Lotus going electric with a $2.5 million 1,000 hp hypercar ever since Geely took a majority stake in the British automaker. At the Shanghai International Auto Show, Lotus has now confirmed that an all-electric hypercar called Type 130 is in “advanced stages of development.” https://electrek.co/2019/04/16/lotus-type-130-full-electric-british-hypercar-teaser/ BATTERY-POWERED TOYOTA C-HR HIGHLIGHTS ELECTRIC DEBUTS IN CHINA Toyota love to promote their cars with the phrase "we choose not to plug in". Which is awkward because we know all cars are going electric and will have to have a plug. But how quickly will that happen? How about now. "Toyota has just jumped into the battery-powered pool, revealing a small collection of all-electrics at the Auto Shanghai 2019. The most notable was its compact crossover, the C-HR EV. It’s the first completely electrified vehicle from the Japanese brand to come to China. Curiously, the other main EV is also the C-HR, but wears a badge proclaiming itself to be the Izoa EV. It, according to Autocar, will be built by the state-owned outfit FAW. Toyota says the twins should be offered to consumers in 2020." reports InsideEVs.com: "The appearance of the all-electric C-HR sparks the inevitable questions, “Will it come to other markets?” While we have no definitive answer, the automaker reminds us that it plans to introduce more than 10 battery-electric vehicles before 2025. While we would hope it makes its way outside of China, the automaker has yet to release technical specifications for the vehicle, so it’s difficult to judge how well suited it might be for Western markets." https://insideevs.com/toyota-c-hr-ev-china-rhombus-izoa-video/ ALL-ELECTRIC GENESIS MINT CONCEPT REVEALED IN NEW YORK Genesis revealed the Mint Concept at Hudson Yards, ahead of the opening of the 2019 New York International Auto Show. The Mint Concept introduces the all-electric, luxury car for the city, a new vehicle typology, featuring organic design and an innovative interior user experience. The versatility of the Mint Concept extends to the design and engineering of its high- density, battery-electric powertrain, which is capable of an estimated 200 miles per full charge and 350-KW fast recharging. TESLA LAUNCHES BATTERY RECYCLING AT NEVADA GIGAFACTORY "In its latest environmental impact statement, Tesla announced that it will open its own battery recycling facility. Tesla has been recycling batteries made at the factory using third-party recyclers. Now, as the earliest Model S's reach 7 years old, and the company is starting to receive some batteries back after use in those early cars, it's setting up its own battery recycling facility." says Eric for Green Car Reports: "The new processing center at the company's Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada to process both old batteries used in customers' Teslas as well as those from its own research and development. The company says lithium, cobalt, aluminum, copper, and steel will be recovered from the batteries in a closed-loop system that optimizes the materials for new battery production. " https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122631_tesla-launches-battery-recycling-at-nevada-gigafactory FASTNED OPENS ITS FIRST 350 KW CHARGING STATION IN THE UK "Fastned just expanded to the United Kingdom, opening not only its first fast-charging station there, but also the first in the UK ready for 350 kW of charging power. It’s located on West Wear Street, which is one of Sunderland’s busiest central routes. Sunderland is also known for its Nissan manufacturing plant, which produces the LEAF for the European market." reports InsideEVs.com; Fastned say: "“Initially, charging at the station in Sunderland will be free. The free charging will end during 2019 as soon as the payment system is activated, from that moment an introductory price will be charged. Charging and paying will then be possible with a EV charge card, debit/credit card, Apple Pay and Android Pay. Later in the year it will also be possible to charge with the Fastned App, making automatic charging (Autocharge) possible in the United Kingdom for the first time.” https://insideevs.com/fastned-opens-first-350-kw-charging-station/ VW OF AMERICA TO GAUGE US APPETITE FOR MQB-BASED TAROK PICKUP CONCEPT AT NY SHOW "Volkswagen of America (VoA) plans to show the Tarok pickup concept for the first time in the US at the New York International Auto Show. Although there are no plans to produce the vehicle for the US market, VoA is showing the Tarok concept to gauge market reaction for a versatile and compact entry-level pickup. The US is the largest global market for pickups." To me this says one thing - it's not about selling diesel trucks, it's VW looking at their electric vehicle offering and Tesla Truck, the Rivian and others, and seeing a lucrative market possibly being closed off to them.' SONO MOTORS TO BUILD SION EV AT SAAB’S FORMER FACTORY IN SWEDEN The first series production solar electric vehicle (SEV) developed by the German mobility provider Sono Motors is to be manufactured in Sweden. As Sono Motors officially announced today, the first generation of the Sion will be produced in Trollhättan by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS). The plant located there was home to the production lines of the long-standing and innovative automobile manufacturer SAAB. In total, an initial 260,000 vehicles will roll off the production line in Trollhättan over an eight-year period. Production will commence in the second half of 2020. After the ramp-up period, approximately 43,000 Sion a year will be manufactured in two-shift operations. Production will be carried out using one hundred percent renewable energy. A bidirectional charging function enables the Sion to both receive and supply electricity, power electrical devices independently, and feed energy to other vehicles or into the electricity grid. Thanks to full-surface solar integration, the vehicle battery can be charged with pure and free solar energy worth up to 34 kilometers’ range per day in addition to its regular WLTP range of 255 kilometers. For its market launch, the Sion will be rolled out in one single variant version costing 25,500 euros. There are plans afoot to develop other vehicle models based on the vehicle’s platform. VOLKSWAGEN ID. R USES DRS FORMULA 1 TECHNOLOGY FOR NÜRBURGRING RUN "Volkswagen has set itself a new challenge with the ID. R this year – the Nürburgring-Nordschleife instead of Pikes Peak. A race track instead of a hill climb. Full-throttle sections instead of hair-pins. Because of this, the fully electric-powered ID. R has been continuously developed with respect to its aerodynamics." says Electric Vehicle News: "As well as an adapted floor and a new spoiler at the front of the vehicle, the ID. R will also sport a newly designed rear wing. It will be much lower than the variant used at Pikes Peak, in order to provide less surface resistance to the flow of air. The new multi-wing rear of the ID. R will nevertheless produce high downforce in the medium-fast turns of the 73-corner Nordschleife. To further reduce the drag in certain sections, the rear wing will deploy technology known from its use in Formula 1 – the so-called Drag Reduction System (DRS). In the pinnacle class of motorsport, DRS is used in order to facilitate overtaking by allowing for higher speeds. During the ID. R’s solo-drive, however, the opening element of the rear wing will be used exclusively to preserve the remaining energy reserves." http://www.electric-vehiclenews.com/2019/04/volkswagen-id-r-uses-drs-formula-1.html COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. To us, World AIDS Day is a day to commemorate those we've lost to HIV/AIDS, uplift those who are living with the virus, and a reminder for us to fight like hell together to end both the stigma and the epidemic. We’ve dedicated this week’s show to discussing where we are now when it comes to HIV/AIDS awareness. First up, we hear from a wonderful young man named Chad about his journey with HIV, from his recent diagnosis, to the ensuing depression, and his eventual path to resiliency and empowerment. His story is moving, powerful and awe-inspiring. Later in the show, Rhonda Cowan and Ryan Benningfield from Volunteers of America (VOA) join us to drop some HIV 101 knowledge and talk us through what to expect when going to get an HIV test. Volunteers of America offers free, anonymous HIV testing at their office at 933 Goss Avenue. More information at (502) 654-8389 or on their website.
Its Roofing Day! Betty has been living in a house for 8 years that was sold in a Sheriff Auction due to HOA dues, Volunteers of America (VOA) needs volunteers for senior snow shoveling, David has been turned down for SS Disability, Joey bought a new house with a well and the water is toxic, this and much more. And tomorrow (Tuesday 11-13-18) we have on John & Matt Klaess w/ My Money Evolution!

The life and times of Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui 郭文贵 reads much like an epic play, so it is fitting that we have included with this podcast a dramatis personæ to explain the many characters in Guo’s story. Scroll to the bottom, below the recommendations, to follow along with them in order of appearance. New York Times journalists Mike Forsythe and Alexandra Stevenson have spent over a dozen hours with the turbulent tycoon at the New York City penthouse overlooking Central Park where he resides in exile, listening to his stories and carefully investigating his most scandalous claims. Recommendations: Jeremy: The Skeptics Society, a website that publishes articles to debunk pseudoscientific, health-related, and religious myths. Alex: Janesville: An American Story, by Amy Goldstein of the Washington Post. It tells how a town in Wisconsin had the General Motors plant leave in 2008, despite Obama’s promise that jobs would stay there. Mike: Betraying Big Brother, an upcoming book by his wife, Leta Hong Fincher, explains what happened to the Feminist Five and what their stories say about the rise of feminism and the control of women in China. Leta’s last book, Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China, published in 2014, was on a similar subject. Kaiser: Beasts of No Nation, a Netflix special by Cary Fukunaga based on the book of the same title by Uzodinma Iweala. The story follows the life of a child soldier in an unnamed West African country. Dramatis personæ: To read more on Guo Wengui himself, see our narrative explainer and a compilation of more recent news on Guo from SupChina and beyond. In order of mention in the podcast: Yue Qingzhi 岳庆芝, Guo Wengui’s wife, lives in New York, according to Guo. Yet she has not been seen in public nor by Mike and Alex, even though they have spent entire days at Guo’s penthouse. Wang Qishan 王岐山, the leader of Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign, secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). Li Keqiang 李克强, the current premier of China’s State Council, formerly a Party secretary in Henan Province where Guo claims to have met him. Wu Yi 吴仪 served in top ministerial positions negotiating trade and managing public health in the early 21st century. Guo claims to have developed a relationship with her back in Henan. Wu Guanzheng 吴官正 served as secretary for CCDI from 2002 to 2007. Ma Jian 马建, the now-jailed close associate of Guo who served as vice minister of State Security from 2006 to 2015. Liu Zhihua 刘志华, the former vice mayor of Beijing who was dismissed in 2006. Liu received a suspended death sentence for taking bribes of over 6 million yuan ($885,000) in October 2008. He Guoqiang 贺国强, the predecessor to Wang Qishan as secretary of the CCDI. Guo alleges that his son He Jintao 贺锦涛 had a financial stake in Founder Securities at the time Guo tried to muscle his way into the company (the Times has confirmed this). HNA Group, formerly Hainan Airlines, a politically connected business conglomerate that burst onto the public scene in 2016, scooping up foreign companies left and right. Hu Shuli 胡舒立, the editor-in-chief of business news and investigative outlet Caixin (disclosure: Caixin partners with SupChina on the Business Brief podcast). Li You 李友, Guo’s former business partner. In 2016, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and fined 750 million yuan ($110 million) for insider trading. Yao Mingshan 姚明珊, the wife of Wang Qishan. Meng Jianzhu 孟建柱, the current secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, which controls the police and security services. Xiao Jianhua 肖建华, another billionaire tycoon who had experience dealing at the top levels of the Chinese government. Xiao was apparently abducted by Chinese authorities in Hong Kong in late January 2017 and has not been seen in public since then. Zhang Yue 张越, a former provincial Party secretary in Hebei Province. Meng Huiqing 孟会青, a now-jailed former CCDI official. Fu Zhenghua 傅政华, the deputy minister of Public Security. Yao Qing 姚庆, grandson of revolutionary and former vice premier Yao Yilin 姚依林, and nephew-in-law of Wang Qishan. Guo’s two children, his son, Mileson Kwok 郭强 (Guo’s English name is Miles!), and his daughter, Guo Mei 郭美, whom Guo claims went to New York University with Ma Jian’s daughter. A “dissident-minder from Guobao” (Ministry of Public Security 国保 guó bǎo), identified later in the podcast as Sun Lijun 孙立军, one of two people Guo claims to have met with in Washington, D.C., in late May 2017. Amanda Bennett, the director of Voice of America (VOA), which aired an interview with Guo on April 19 that Guo and some VOA journalists complained was cut short.
New York’s distinction as a “sanctuary city” is a saving grace for the undocumented community who fear for their future under the 45th U.S. president. But is it enough? Here, producer Ramon Taylor explores the roots of sanctuary, along with efforts made by city officials, universities, and congregations, and the ensuing fight on Capitol Hill that may well determine the fate of more than half a million New Yorkers and millions more across the country. Credits: “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done),” K'naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC & Residente; Voice of America (VOA). David Ensor, Joan Shorenstein Fellow (fall 2015) and former director of Voice of America (VOA), introduces his new research paper making the case for strengthening VOA in order to grow U.S. soft power through the production and spread of journalism. VOA’s news programming, which is funded by the U.S. government but remains editorially independent, reaches almost 188 million people in more than 45 languages through a variety of platforms. Building upon Joseph Nye’s concept of soft power, Ensor argues that VOA is one of the U.S.’s most valuable national security assets, and as such, needs more resources than it currently receives. Ensor's full paper can be read at shorensteincenter.org.
