I was 6 years old when Voice of America first broadcast during World War II. It was established in 1941 initially focused on countering Nazi and Japanese propaganda during World War II and later played a significant role during the Cold War broadcasting to communist countries. Very recently, however, the White House moved to close down Voice of America to "ensure taxpayers are no longer on the hook for radical propaganda. "To get an up-close and personal view of what's happening at VOA, we asked Steve Herman to be a guest on the podcast. Steven Herman is the chief national correspondent for the Voice of America. From 2017 to 2021, Steve was senior White House correspondent and subsequently VOA's White House bureau chief. Steve is the author of five books, the most recent of which is His latest, Behind the White House Curtain: A Senior Journalist's Story of Covering the President — and Why It Matters, is a 2024 release from Kent State University Press. In our conversation, Steve and I discussed why the Voice of America was so vital and why it was supported by all American presidents for the past 80 years with the exception of the current president. We talked about the dedication and diligence of the 1300 employees of VOA who have been put on leave and the closure of VOA. Steve pointed out that since VOA was shuttered, the world now can only hear the voices of Moscow, Beijing Pyongyang and Tehran and the danger that causes. We discussed Steve's appearance on 60 Minutes and his book Behind the White House Curtain: A Senior Journalist's Story of Covering the President - and Why It Matters.Book Availability:https://a.co/d/6zaFTL8About the Bookhttps://www.c-span.org/program/book-tv/behind-the-white-house-curtain/643228

On a daily basis, Americans and the world are being overwhelmed by the Trump administration's decisions that are deeply consequential politically, economically, socially and constitutionally. Since Trump's first term, the press has been under fire often being called the "Fake News". In this second term, the attacks are growing stronger. On March 15, the U.S. President signed an executive order to shut down the Voice of America, a government funded network that has provided news and information to the world for more than 80 years. VOA is one of the most trusted news sources to 350 million people globally, often in places where the idea of free press is non-existent...North Korea, Myanmar, Belarus, Venezuela to name a few. In this episode of Shoes Off Inside 1-on-1, May talks with her old journalist colleague and friend Steve Herman, VOA's Chief National Correspondent, about the significance of the network's mission and what the devestating impact the shutdown of VOA will have on the world. SUNSHINE WEEK celebrates both press freedoms and the ability to get public records and know what's going on in your government. Our first guest is STEVE HERMAN, off the air after the Trump administration shuttered Voice of America. We talk about how listeners around the world have lost a key news source. Closer to home, we speak with Bobby Block, head of the Florida First Amendment Foundation about some legislation that could erase even knowing where your lawmakers live - and how you can support nonpartisan efforts to keep information open and public. Voice of America (VOA),, the U.S. government-funded international broadcaster, is facing an unprecedented crisis. Journalists have been cut off from their newsrooms—emails shut down, phones disconnected, and no way to reach editors—leaving many in a state of uncertainty. Steve Herman, Chief National Correspondent for VOA, finds himself among more than 1,300 colleagues placed on excused absence. While Herman was singled out under an executive order deeming him potentially disloyal to the president's foreign policy, his colleagues' suspensions were not linked to any alleged wrongdoing. As the shutdown stretches on, audiences once served by VOA's trusted reporting are turning elsewhere, raising questions about the future of one of America's most enduring journalistic institutions. Steve Herman, author of Behind the White House Curtain, is back to tell the tale of the time the Trump administration tried to seize editorial control of the Voice of America and turn it into a propaganda agency. Why is it in our interests as Americans for VOA to remain an independent, credible source worldwide, even covering negative events in the US? Dr. Steve Herman has toured Israel with Eve Harow more than once. When he arrived with his wife in October, however, it was to volunteer his prolific skills as a thoracic surgeon at the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon near Gaza. He speaks about the experience, the life altering, devastating wounds suffered by healthy young people and the damage to so many lives due to the Hamas barbarism. Israel does not distinguish between military and civilian hospitals and the war has impacted all of society. Dr. Herman functioned professionally even while under rocket attacks and appreciated the devotion that all the staff- irrespective of religion or ethnicity- showed to the wounded. May he return to Israel only to visit the historical and Biblical sites he loves so much and not patch together broken bodies. With great thanks to him and all the other volunteers in so many areas who have stepped in to show solidarity with the Jewish state and give evil the blow it deserves. Together we will be victorious. The cost is just so so high….
On November 22, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. EPISODE 97: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: So you probably haven't heard anything about this (LOL) but last night Elon Musk reenacted the church scene from "The Godfather" where Al Pacino as Michael Corleone has all his rivals murdered while his own son is being baptized. I was almost incidental in this: on November 6th, Musk wrote "My commitment to free speech extends to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk." Five weeks later Elon Musk-leone banned the account and threatened legal action against the kid, called it "Assassination Coordinates," even though the information is legally and publicly available and as Phil Bump of The Washington Post writes "identifying the location of an airplane provides 'assassination coordinates' to, like, the operator of a Patriot missile battery." Journalists like Aaron Rupar, Ryan Mac, Donie O'Sullivan from CNN, Drew Harwell of The Post, Matt Binder, Micah Lee, Tony Webster, Steve Herman from the Voice of America - and me - who defended the account, or mentioned a new account had begun on Twitter's rival Mastodon, or linked to it - were immediately banned, permanently, without explanation or notification. I"ll give you the full saga of Apartheid Clyde here, but what a friggin candy-ass lying hypocritical self-contradicting little paranoid snowflake Elon Musk is! B-Block (20:57) SPECIAL COMMENT: I swear I wondered if maybe Musk did this anti-free speech crap just to make everybody forget about Trump's ridiculous "SuperHero Digital Baseball Cards" which show such illustrations as liquid pouring out of the seat of his pants, him standing in front of something called "RUMP TOWEL," and him standing dressed as a cowboy and way in the background it sure looks like two horses are having sex. C-Block (27:27) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: His classic story "The Catbird Seat."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With the help of Kendra Wenzel, co-founder and head coach at Wenzel Coaching, we field questions on how to manage training when you have a busy travel schedule, when to get intensity during the week before a race, incorporating big gear work into your LSD rides, and knowing when to push through or when to pull the plug on a workout. Travel and trainingThis first question comes from Steve Herman in Dayton, Ohio. He writes: “I recently took a new job that requires a significant travel schedule. Typically, about once or twice per month, I'll have a two- to three-day trip, but sometimes more. I can control when I travel to some extent, but not completely. So far, I've been planning my workouts around my trips and vice versa, i.e., digging an ATL “hole” and using the time off the bike while away from home to recover. This can't be optimal. Now that I'm in the off-season, I've been thinking about incorporating running to eventually build up my ability to do high-intensity and/or long-duration workouts while traveling. What are your thoughts on that idea? Is there some way to translate work done while running to work done on the bike? Is there a better way to deal with this?” Training camp before a big raceOur next question on travel comes from Susan Squam in Buffalo, New York. She writes: “I have my target race coming up towards the end of August. It's a three-day stage race. I want to do a big training camp before the race, but I was wondering how much rest I need between the end of the camp and the race? The race starts on a Friday and I'm flying there on the Wednesday night. Does finishing my camp on the Sunday before give me enough time?” HIT work in final race prepThis question comes from Lasse in Lillehammer, Norway. He writes: “I am planning to run a 14-mile [running] race on Saturday. How many days before the race should I refrain from doing a HIT workout? Can I do one Thursday and then have Friday to recover or is two days out too close? If two days is too close, can I focus the HIT workout on upper body on Thursday? Will that leave my legs fresh for the race on Saturday?” When to push through or pull the plugThis question comes from David Sutter in Carbondale, Colorado. He writes: “Should I suspend training if I am feeling exhausted or push through with a shorter zone 2 workout? Am I negating gains that could be realized by not allowing for adequate recovery? When I see CTL drop on TrainingPeaks, it makes me think I'm losing fitness, but I think that is a maybe a flaw with CTL?” Effective use of training racesThis question comes from Amos Kirkpatrick in Burbank, California. He writes: “I'm not a big interval guy. I love to get my intensity through training races. Most weeks, I'll do the group ride on the weekend, a training race on Tuesdays, and another training race on Thursdays when work allows. Is this an effective approach to keep me strong throughout the season and to prepare for my target event?” Big gear work on your LSD rides? Our final question comes from Scott in Greensboro, North Carolina. He writes: “Is there any benefit to doing the long, slow rides at a slow grinding cadence? I do mine indoors on rollers. My thought process would be that the low cadence (60 rpm or lower) would fatigue the slow-twitch muscles quicker, thus, recruiting the fast-twitch muscles to work sooner.” Learn more about your ad choices. Presidential hopeful Joe Biden claims Donald Trump is accelerating systemic racism, after the US President threatened to unleash the military if violent protests in America cannot be contained.Biden has criticised Trump's move to stand outside a church holding a bible, suggesting he should instead open it and learn something.Voice of America's White House Bureau chief Steve Herman told Kate Hawkesby that is the tone most Democrats are taking."Not only was this a very unnecessary and dangerous photo op, but that the President really isn't sincere."The bishop of the Episcopal Church where he went without their notice also said that she objected to this vehemently and if the President had wanted to come into the Church to pray or to speak about George Floyd, then he most certainly would have been welcomed, but no the way this was done.Mr Herman said Trump's call to ring in the military most definitely "stoked the fire".

Are you in benzo withdrawal? Do you feel stuck? Hopeless? Do you wish you could be more positive? More active? In part two of this three-part series, you will learn tips for improving your physical and mental health. Maintaining a positive mindset during withdrawal may sound like a near impossibility — but it's a goal worth fighting for. And keeping active — while a continuous struggle – can be equally as challenging but just as key to your sanity and success. https://www.easinganxiety.com/post/managing-the-fear-of-benzo-withdrawal-part-2-bfp004Video ID: BFP004 Chapters 00:00 Introduction02:27 Q&A08:15 Feature: Managing the Fear of Benzo Withdrawal (Part 2)23:07 Moment of Peace Episode Summary Welcome to the second segment of our 3-part series on Managing the Fear of Benzo Withdrawal. This series is derived from a chapter in my book titled, “Managing the Fear,” which focuses on reducing the fear, anxiety, and stress during benzo withdrawal. Before we dive too deep into our featured topic, we will chat a bit and cover a few questions in our Q&A section on short-term use and symptoms in protracted withdrawal. Feature Series SERIES: Managing the Fear of Benzo Withdrawal In my opinion, fear, and the stress and anxiety related to that fear, cause more distress and more complications during withdrawal than anything else. And this fear is not some natural psychological fear. It's chemically enhanced. On top of the original anxieties we had before our dependence on benzos, we now have a damaged nervous system that can't process fear correctly. A system that can send us into a panic state — both psychologically and physiologically — at the least sign of distress. Above all, stop worrying. Worry, fear and anxiety increase all withdrawal symptoms. Many of these symptoms are actually due to anxiety and not signs of brain or nervous system damage. People who fear withdrawal have more intense symptoms than those who just take it as it comes and think positively and confidently about recovery.— Prof. Ashton, The Ashton Manual This series is broken down into three separate parts: PART 1 (https://www.easinganxiety.com/post/managing-the-fear-of-benzo-withdrawal-part-1-bfp003) — Series Introduction— 1) Taking Responsibility for Your Own Recovery PART 2 (this video)— 2) Keeping Positive— 3) Maintaining Mental and Physical Activity PART 3 (https://www.easinganxiety.com/post/managing-the-fear-of-benzo-withdrawal-part-3-bfp005)— 4) Having Kindness for Yourself and Others— 5) Finding Acceptance of Your Condition Episode Description Today we discuss two essential elements to maintaining a stable mindset during withdrawal: positivity and activity. 2) POSITIVITYAllowing your feelings to happen, all feelings, is critical to maintaining mental health. A positive mindset is not about suppressing your feelings or glossing over them and putting on a good face. That plan of attack can lead to disaster. What I'm talking about is a positive mindset. You still feel sad, angry, mad, and everything else at different times. But when something happens in your life, you will lean a bit more on the positive side than the negative side. Focus on what is good in your life. 3) ACTIVITYKeeping an active mind and body is critical to success during withdrawal. More and more studies show that keeping your mind active is key to keeping it healthy. This goes double for people with anxiety and triple for people going through benzo withdrawal. And being physically active is equally as important. Studies have shown that the first twenty minutes of exercise garners the most health benefits. Even if you can't do anything else, a brisk walk every day can do wonders. It's not just about exercise, it's about being active. Steve Herman consults with legal professionals to help them think more clearly about an issue that all too often blinds even the most level-headed among us with blind rage: allegations of sexual abuse of children. Precisely because these crimes are so offensive to people in our society, we tend to jump to conclusions, often hurting many innocent people in the process—including children. This isn't an easy thing to talk about, but Steve does it with intelligence, balance, and a deep sense of humanity.
This week we will visit with Steve Herman, a New Zealand medium who travels extensively teaching workshops and giving guidance of a spiritual nature.
