In this episode, we speak with Marion N Chivot-Legris, Director of ESG & Sustainability Strategy at Edmonton International Airport (YEG), who shares how the Canadian airport is leveraging its unique position to drive sustainability innovation across the region.Chivot-Legris discusses:YEG's transformation into a “sustainability engine” for the entire region, building an integrated ecosystem that brings together clean energy companies, logistics, agri-food technologies, and education beyond traditional aviation operations. The airport's leadership in hydrogen development, leveraging Alberta's position as Canada's hydrogen corridor, with nearly 60% of the country's hydrogen produced in the Edmonton metropolitan region, to test use cases from ground vehicles to potential future aircraft.YEG's methodical approach to hydrogen adoption, starting with Toyota Mirai cars and Hyundai NEXO vehicles before progressing to heavier equipment like hydrogen-diesel dual fuel runway sweepers as stepping stones toward future hydrogen infrastructure. The airport's complementary approach to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrogen, and how it's working with local partners to advance SAF production.Key lessons for airports beginning their sustainability journey: progress doesn't require perfection, partnerships are essential, and transparency in sharing both successes and challenges builds trust and encourages collaboration.Chivot-Legris also offers unique insights into how airports can serve as innovation hubs that extend their impact far beyond traditional aviation operations. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Swedavia's Lena Wennberg & Therese Forsström, who share the airport operator's ambitious plans for a fossil-free future.

After a 10-day public run and a two-day media preview, the LA Auto Show ended Nov. 28. It was the industry's first major show since the beginning of the Covid-1 pandemic. The Weekly Driver Podcast was on site to take in the sights and sounds. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I drove from Sacramento to Los Angeles round-trip in a 2020 Hyundai Nexo. Despite being two years old, the hydrogen-propelled SUV had been driven only about 1,500 miles. We added another 900 miles, give or take a few miles. The LA Auto Show this year showcased many concept cars. All images © Bruce Aldrich/2021 In this episode of the podcast, we review the highlights and lowlights of the show. We discuss our experiences in the Nexo. And we abruptly switch topics in the second half of the episode to discuss the experience Bruce and his wife Alene had in the maiden voyage in their new Ford F-250 pickup truck and its fifth wheel companion, a Keystone Cougar recreational vehicle. LA Auto Show: Hydrogen Horrors To close the podcast, Bruce also reviews his experience with Alene attending a parade in nearby Elk Grove to celebrate the NASCAR national championship of Kyle Larsen. He was raised in the community and it recently honored his accomplishment with an old-style, downtown parade. As co-hosts of the podcast for more than four years, Bruce and I share similar opinions about most automotive topics. We agreed the LA Auto Show's major emphasis was on the future of electric cars and trucks. Our observations meshed also in the low-key atmosphere of this year's show as well as thoughts on the always-speculative nature of concept vehicles. LA Auto Show: RVs and Concepts One exception to our often like-minded automotive opinions: Bruce thought our experience driving a hydrogen vehicle proved the idea has major issues and is unlikely to succeed. I still maintain hydrogen has a future in the automotive market despite its drawbacks. We had our share of difficulties refueling. VinVast, the first Vietnamese carmaker set to distribute vehicles in the United States, showcased it pending offerings at the LA Auto Show.

Sedibelo Platinum Mines closer to finding listing date – Frandsen

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The unlisted Sedibelo Platinum in South Africa’s North West province is closer to finding a stock exchange listing date, says Pallinghurst managing partner and co-founder and Sedibelo chairperson Arne Frandsen, who is absolutely bullish about the prospects for platinum group metals (PGMs) in the medium to long term. “Yes, at some stage we should be listed. Are we closer to finding a listing date? Yes, we are. Is the market better? Yes, it is. So, the ducks are quacking, I accept that. We’ll definitely look at it out of the notion that a listing will be something beneficial for the business and not just listing for listing’s sake,” Frandsen stated in a Zoom interview with Mining Weekly. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) “I’m an ex-banker who feels that being listed is good, so, yes, there was a desire at one stage to be listed. But again, when markets were bad and platinum companies were trading at very low valuations, why would you be listed if you didn’t need the money? So, we slowed our pace and focused on being profitable, even at these very low platinum prices, and, yes, that’s not conventional. Typically, you’d like to be listed and all of that, but our shareholders are very patient,” said Frandsen. Among Sedibelo's key shareholders are the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela community and the State-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Currently producing 150 000 oz/y, Sedibelo has the resources to double, treble or even quadruple that output. Through ten years of PGM permafrost, Sedibelo managed not to go to shareholders a single time and has remained debt-free. Now that it is growing muscles, it is expected to start flexing those muscles by producing more ounces. In South Africa, Pallinghurst is invested in PGMs and manganese and, in Canada, it is invested in graphite and lithium battery materials. In Canada, it works with Investissement Québec in a similar fashion to the way it works with the IDC in South Africa. On whether the Johannesburg Stock Exchange would likely feature as a stock exchange of choice should an initial public offering eventuate for Sedibelo, Frandsen retorted: “Guaranteed, it will be one of our listings, hundred per cent.” Pallinghurst sees the demand for battery raw materials expanding in a manner not dissimilar to the steel raw materials super-cycle of a decade ago – and foresees PGMs following suit through fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and green hydrogen development. Driving battery electric vehicles (EVs) and FCEVs are increasingly stricter government regulations and consumer demand for green energy options. In the global public sector, China, Germany, Japan, Korea and California have adopted far-reaching climate-mitigation measures, including PGM-boosting hydrogen strategies, while in the global private sector, several large automotive manufacturers have proclaimed their strong commitment to fuel cell production, the most vocal of these being Hyundai, which in a double-page advertisement in this week’s Economist shouts from the rooftops that it will be making 700 000 fuel cell stacks a year by 2030, nearly a third of which will go to trucks, shipping and even home appliances. This is the comment of Hyundai fuel cell centre head Dr Saehoon Kim: "The driver of a FCEV can refuel quickly at a road-side station and this same fuel cell technology can also power heating systems, generators, machinery and heavy transport. As FCEVs become more common on city streets, the growing availability of green hydrogen will make them a reliably zero-emission option." One kilogram of hydrogen powers a Hyundai Nexo crossover special utility vehicle (SUV) for 100 km compared with some crossover SUVs using nine litres of petrol to go the same distance. Pallinghurst has committed $1-billion for investment and recently concluded financing transactions totalling C$20-million with Toronto Stock Exchange-Venture-listed Nouveau Monde, which is developing ...

Show #447   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to the family a new Patreon PRODUCER TORSTEN WILD.   MERCEDES-BENZ EQC EDITION 1886 ADDS EXCLUSIVITY TO THE ELECTRIC SUV A limited special edition EQC Edition 1886 has been announced at the New York Auto Show as a tribute to the first motor car, and looking forward at a new era for Daimler. "As for the name, it’s obviously a callback to the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen – the vehicle widely recognized as the first production car. Mechanically speaking, everything about the EQC Edition 1886 is just as you’ll find it on the standard model. A pair of electric motors drive all four wheels with a combined output of 402 horsepower (300 kilowatts), drawing power from an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Mercedes estimates the EQC’s range between 277 and 293 miles, with the capability for fast charging at 110 kW when such high-output stations are available" writes Chris Smith for motor1.com: "The standard EQC is expected to arrive in June for the European market, with U.S. sales beginning next year. The Edition 1886 is also slated to go on sale in the U.S. next year. Pricing for either model hasn’t been announced yet." I think that points towards Mercedes engineers having done a great job on efficiency, because 80kWh is less than others are using for the same size vehicle, if you look at the 95kWh Audi e-tron which just scrapes over 200 miles on the EPA range.   https://www.motor1.com/news/345040/mercedes-benz-eqc-edition-1886/   WORLD CAR AWARDS GIVES JAGUAR I-PACE THREE HONORS "The Jaguar I-Pace was a critical darling of the World Car of the Year Awards, announced Wednesday at the New York Auto Show. It nabbed the World Car of the Year Award, as well as honors for Green Car and Design." says Zac for InsideEVs.com: "The other two finalists for the World Car of the Year award, announced last month at the Geneva Motor Show, were the Audi E-Tron and the Volvo S60/V60. The I-Pace shared its World Green Car award with the Audi, while the hydrogen fuel cell Hyundai Nexo was also nominated for that honor. Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum, was in New York to receive the awards. Underscoring the significance of the awards, he said that “going green” was going to happen to the whole industry and that cars like the I-Pace are the start of the journey."   https://insideevs.com/2019-ny-auto-show-jaguar-world-car/   LOTUS ANNOUNCES ‘WORLD’S FIRST FULL ELECTRIC BRITISH HYPERCAR’, UNVEILS TEASER "Lotus confirmed that it is working on what they describe as the “world’s first full electric British hypercar” and it unveiled a teaser image for the electric vehicle." writes Fred for Electrek today: "There have been rumors about Lotus going electric with a $2.5 million 1,000 hp hypercar ever since Geely took a majority stake in the British automaker. At the Shanghai International Auto Show, Lotus has now confirmed that an all-electric hypercar called Type 130 is in “advanced stages of development.”   https://electrek.co/2019/04/16/lotus-type-130-full-electric-british-hypercar-teaser/   BATTERY-POWERED TOYOTA C-HR HIGHLIGHTS ELECTRIC DEBUTS IN CHINA Toyota love to promote their cars with the phrase "we choose not to plug in". Which is awkward because we know all cars are going electric and will have to have a plug. But how quickly will that happen? How about now. "Toyota has just jumped into the battery-powered pool, revealing a small collection of all-electrics at the Auto Shanghai 2019. The most notable was its compact crossover, the C-HR EV. It’s the first completely electrified vehicle from the Japanese brand to come to China. Curiously, the other main EV is also the C-HR, but wears a badge proclaiming itself to be the Izoa EV. It, according to Autocar, will be built by the state-owned outfit FAW. Toyota says the twins should be offered to consumers in 2020." reports InsideEVs.com: "The appearance of the all-electric C-HR sparks the inevitable questions, “Will it come to other markets?” While we have no definitive answer, the automaker reminds us that it plans to introduce more than 10 battery-electric vehicles before 2025. While we would hope it makes its way outside of China, the automaker has yet to release technical specifications for the vehicle, so it’s difficult to judge how well suited it might be for Western markets."   https://insideevs.com/toyota-c-hr-ev-china-rhombus-izoa-video/   ALL-ELECTRIC GENESIS MINT CONCEPT REVEALED IN NEW YORK Genesis revealed the Mint Concept at Hudson Yards, ahead of the opening of the 2019 New York International Auto Show. The Mint Concept introduces the all-electric, luxury car for the city, a new vehicle typology, featuring organic design and an innovative interior user experience. The versatility of the Mint Concept extends to the design and engineering of its high- density, battery-electric powertrain, which is capable of an estimated 200 miles per full charge and 350-KW fast recharging.   TESLA LAUNCHES BATTERY RECYCLING AT NEVADA GIGAFACTORY "In its latest environmental impact statement, Tesla announced that it will open its own battery recycling facility. Tesla has been recycling batteries made at the factory using third-party recyclers. Now, as the earliest Model S's reach 7 years old, and the company is starting to receive some batteries back after use in those early cars, it's setting up its own battery recycling facility." says Eric for Green Car Reports: "The new processing center at the company's Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada to process both old batteries used in customers' Teslas as well as those from its own research and development. The company says lithium, cobalt, aluminum, copper, and steel will be recovered from the batteries in a closed-loop system that optimizes the materials for new battery production. "   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122631_tesla-launches-battery-recycling-at-nevada-gigafactory   FASTNED OPENS ITS FIRST 350 KW CHARGING STATION IN THE UK "Fastned just expanded to the United Kingdom, opening not only its first fast-charging station there, but also the first in the UK ready for 350 kW of charging power. It’s located on West Wear Street, which is one of Sunderland’s busiest central routes. Sunderland is also known for its Nissan manufacturing plant, which produces the LEAF for the European market." reports InsideEVs.com; Fastned say: "“Initially, charging at the station in Sunderland will be free. The free charging will end during 2019 as soon as the payment system is activated, from that moment an introductory price will be charged. Charging and paying will then be possible with a EV charge card, debit/credit card, Apple Pay and Android Pay. Later in the year it will also be possible to charge with the Fastned App, making automatic charging (Autocharge) possible in the United Kingdom for the first time.”   https://insideevs.com/fastned-opens-first-350-kw-charging-station/   VW OF AMERICA TO GAUGE US APPETITE FOR MQB-BASED TAROK PICKUP CONCEPT AT NY SHOW "Volkswagen of America (VoA) plans to show the Tarok pickup concept for the first time in the US at the New York International Auto Show. Although there are no plans to produce the vehicle for the US market, VoA is showing the Tarok concept to gauge market reaction for a versatile and compact entry-level pickup. The US is the largest global market for pickups." To me this says one thing - it's not about selling diesel trucks, it's VW looking at their electric vehicle offering and Tesla Truck, the Rivian and others, and seeing a lucrative market possibly being closed off to them.'   SONO MOTORS TO BUILD SION EV AT SAAB’S FORMER FACTORY IN SWEDEN The first series production solar electric vehicle (SEV) developed by the German mobility provider Sono Motors is to be manufactured in Sweden. As Sono Motors officially announced today, the first generation of the Sion will be produced in Trollhättan by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS). The plant located there was home to the production lines of the long-standing and innovative automobile manufacturer SAAB. In total, an initial 260,000 vehicles will roll off the production line in Trollhättan over an eight-year period. Production will commence in the second half of 2020. After the ramp-up period, approximately 43,000 Sion a year will be manufactured in two-shift operations. Production will be carried out using one hundred percent renewable energy. A bidirectional charging function enables the Sion to both receive and supply electricity, power electrical devices independently, and feed energy to other vehicles or into the electricity grid. Thanks to full-surface solar integration, the vehicle battery can be charged with pure and free solar energy worth up to 34 kilometers’ range per day in addition to its regular WLTP range of 255 kilometers. For its market launch, the Sion will be rolled out in one single variant version costing 25,500 euros. There are plans afoot to develop other vehicle models based on the vehicle’s platform.   VOLKSWAGEN ID. R USES DRS FORMULA 1 TECHNOLOGY FOR NÜRBURGRING RUN "Volkswagen has set itself a new challenge with the ID. R this year – the Nürburgring-Nordschleife instead of Pikes Peak. A race track instead of a hill climb. Full-throttle sections instead of hair-pins. Because of this, the fully electric-powered ID. R has been continuously developed with respect to its aerodynamics." says Electric Vehicle News: "As well as an adapted floor and a new spoiler at the front of the vehicle, the ID. R will also sport a newly designed rear wing. It will be much lower than the variant used at Pikes Peak, in order to provide less surface resistance to the flow of air. The new multi-wing rear of the ID. R will nevertheless produce high downforce in the medium-fast turns of the 73-corner Nordschleife. To further reduce the drag in certain sections, the rear wing will deploy technology known from its use in Formula 1 – the so-called Drag Reduction System (DRS). In the pinnacle class of motorsport, DRS is used in order to facilitate overtaking by allowing for higher speeds. During the ID. R’s solo-drive, however, the opening element of the rear wing will be used exclusively to preserve the remaining energy reserves."   http://www.electric-vehiclenews.com/2019/04/volkswagen-id-r-uses-drs-formula-1.html   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #422.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 21st March 2019. And welcome to another Patreon supporter of the show thank you to PRODUCER JEREMY ROEBUCK   THESE COUNTRIES HAVE THE HIGHEST SHARE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Electric cars are proving to be a massive hit in Norway. Almost half of all new passenger car sales in 2018 were electric or hybrid vehicles, according to the latest numbers. This figure far outstrips other countries around the world. Neighbouring Iceland came in second at 19%, while Sweden was third with 8%." Say the World Economic Forum: "Buying and running a car in Norway is an expensive undertaking. The recently combined car tax and insurance levy is calculated on vehicle weight and emissions; it could add anything between 29% and 100% to the purchase price. Electric vehicles are exempt from this high level of duty. For now, at least, they are the prudent choice. But the current levels of subsidy are due to expire in 2020."   https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/03/chart-of-the-day-half-of-new-cars-sold-in-norway-are-electric-or-hybrid/   IN 20 DAYS OF MARCH, TESLA DELIVERED OVER 2,500 MODEL 3 IN NORWAY "Tesla further increased it already fast pace of Model 3 deliveries in Norway, reaching a level of over 2,500 new registrations within the first 20 days of March! Together with the Model S/Model X, Tesla registrations exceed 2,800." Reports InsideEVs.com: "The previous best for new EVs was 2,172 set by the Nissan LEAF in March 2018, when Nissan launched deliveries of the second-generation version in Europe. Now, the new record holder is the Model 3, and with 11 more days to go, there is a huge chance to achieve more than 3,000 registrations, maybe even more than 3,500."   https://insideevs.com/march-tesla-delivered-model-3-norway/   FIRST TESLA SEMI TRUCK DIECAST MODEL GETS DELIVERED: UNBOXING "Hardcore Tesla fans with a goal to own every model the company makes may be in luck now. For just $250, you can take ownership of your very own Tesla Semi in the form of a 1:24 scale diecast model. It's now available for purchase on Tesla's online store." Says the US edition of MOtor1.com today: "The model measures 11.5 inches in length, and it's 6.75 inches tall. According to Tesla, the toy features all the precise details of the "real" Tesla Semi, due to being designed with the same 3D CAD data. The video above gives you a solid idea of its details and size. The Tesla Semi will start at $150,000 and boasts a five-second zero-to-60-mph time. In its largest configuration, the truck will offer a 600-mile all-electric range and be capable of hauling 80,000 pounds. Many major companies have already placed multiple pre-orders for the futuristic beast."   https://www.motor1.com/news/314594/tesla-semi-unboxing-video/   TESLA SEMI COCKPIT DETAILS REVEALED IN CLEAREST INTERIOR PICTURES YET "The Tesla Semi was recently showcased in Sacramento, CA for the CALSTART Advanced Tech Vehicle Display and the 2030 Clean Transportation Summit Reception, and it was in the area long enough for some enthusiasts to capture detailed photographs of its interior. The images reveal a Model 3-esque interface, a mysterious third pedal, and a vehicle that is battle-scarred from thousands of miles of real-world testing." Says Simon Alvarez for Teslarati.com: "Noticeable from one of the pictures of the truck’s interior is a small third pedal positioned beside the brake pedal. Tesla has not posted any details about this particular component, though speculations among the community suggest that the pedal is a mechanical parking brake, which is used in some vehicles. The twin Model 3-esque displays on both sides of the Semi’s steering wheel are also quite interesting, with the right display featuring Navigation, and the left being dedicated for the all-electric truck’s settings. The Semi’s left screen seems to feature a dark theme too, which makes its GUI really easy on the eyes."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-interior-pictures/   VOLVO UNDERESTIMATED PLUG-IN HYBRID DEMAND: WILL TRIPLE PRODUCTION "Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson admitted that the company hugely underestimated demand for its plug-in hybrid cars and now is hard at work to increase the production capacity." Says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Currently, Volvo does not have enough batteries, motors and other components to produce all the plug-in vehicles that it could sell. Further expansion should increase sales by 20-25% by the end of this year. The capacity is expected to triple compared to 2018, which should give the Swedish manufacturer a little room for new and updated models." He said: "We are not happy because we could sell more [plug-in hybrids], he said. We underestimated the demand. We are tripling the capacity from what we had about a year ago to where we will be at the end of this year."   https://insideevs.com/volvo-underestimated-phev-demand-production-up/   CHINA'S E-BUSES THAT ARE DENTING OIL DEMAND "By the end of this year, a cumulative 270,000 barrels a day of diesel demand will have been displaced by electric buses, most of it in China, according to a report published Tuesday by BloombergNEF. That’s more than three times the displacement by all the world’s passenger electric vehicles (a market where Tesla has a share of about 12 percent.)." reports Bloomberg: "Buses matter more because of their size and constant use. For every 1,000 electric buses on the road, 500 barrels of diesel are displaced each day, BloombergNEF estimates. By comparison, 1,000 battery electric vehicles remove just 15 barrels of oil demand."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-19/forget-tesla-it-s-china-s-e-buses-that-are-denting-oil-demand   TESLA INCREASES PRICING ON MOST CARS, BUT JUST BY A BIT "It took a few extra days, but Tesla has now slightly increased prices for most models."according to Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Not long ago, Tesla announced that it would not close as many stores, and instead, bump pricing up by around 3 percent on most models globally. Tesla has now moved forward in increasing prices across its vehicle lineup, but the average increase is not as high as previously announced. However, the increases are less than the ~3 percent Tesla talked about. For instance, the $37,000 Standard Range “Plus” Model 3 went up to just $37,500. Other variants seem to have gone up by about $1,500."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-slightly-increases-pricing-most-models/   HYUNDAI NEXO PRICED AT £65,995 IN THE UK Hyundai Motor UK has announced UK pricing for NEXO, the company’s 2nd generation hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. The Hyundai NEXO fuel-cell SUV is now available to order directly from Hyundai Motor UK, priced at £65,995 after the government plug-in car grant. The under bonnet Power Module Complete (PMC) combines oxygen from the surrounding air and hydrogen from NEXO’s high pressure storage tanks, creating a flow of electrons that both powers the drive motor and charges the on board 1.56kWh high voltage battery.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
